Son of Mills O. Burnham

I'm seeking any information on Alonso (Thaddeus) Burnham. He is my gggfather. He is the son of Mills O.Burnham, lighthouse keeper. His mother is unknown. I know she is not Mary McCuen.I think Alonso was born abt. 1842 in Jacksonville, or St.Lucie, Fla. and married Anne E. Christopher of New Berlin. Mills O. also had a daughter (Emma Burnham) with said unknown mother.I do know father and son were very close, through letters they wrote each other.Alonso lived with Mills O.,Mary, Francis and Mills Jr. as a young boy and visited each other after Alonso became an adult. I've been told by my great-grand aunts (his daughters) that he had traveled to Albany, NY on several occasions with Francis. I would appreciate any information to help me fill in some gaps in my reseach.

Dear Doug,
I belive that you meet me Robert Alan Burnham. It was a packed church & house there. So many great family members there. My brother Dave Charles and sister Linda Jane were not present but my wife Vicenta & I were.
I'm just picking up on all this good reading material.
When I was very young I recalled going to Maine and seeing my great grand mother Alice & Great grand pa. Later years I recall going to a fund raiser for either President Dwight D. Eisehower or then govenor Endmund Muskie where lots of lobster was being served. Later years I would see my grand parents Della & Grand pa Charles take care of thier parents but that was almost fatal for all as they too were old. As Alice went to a care facility in Groton Ct. I would often visit her and talk to her. She had a very hard time hearing, after all 103 & right to 109 +. She made some very impressive paintings that were "busy" with objects in one picture. She was witty right to the end. I asked her what was the greatest man kind invention in her life time in 1973. Her reply, with my mother ( Helen) present, said the privy. I didn't understand her so I asked again and she said the same. I then asked my mother is she talking OK or do you undersatnd her and mom just giggled and smiled then said " the privillage house" or moon house as it was called. I thought she was going to say a man landing on the moon was but no. So I gave her another chance & said to me tolit paper. Go figure....So vain she was. My mother said sure, Sears & Robuck or newspapers was all they had back then in 1870's untill when tolit paper was made. Her 3rd next & final answer was flying. She always wanted to fly in a plane. Alice was a lovely lady and very nice! I would love to see her painting if any one knows where it is? It was even posted at the time in a newspaper article with her age 104. Also some of grandfather Charles's photos he had. Please feel free to write back any time.

Check out the WWI Draft cards - Charles is there - gives his bdate as 7 May 1898 in Michigan - since they were in Monroe County in 1900 - pretty good guess that's where Charles Leonard was born ;o)

According to Findagrave - the father (also Charles Leonard) was born in 1854 and died in Monroe County MI in 1909 - buried in St. Anthony's cemetery. Agnes is also there - born 1866 and died in 1918. - that should get you on the right track hopefully.

Looks like you are making a good guess re: him using Leonard as his first name - check out the 1900 and 1910 Census for Monroe County MI - he's listed as Leonard in both those years - it's just Agnes and the kids by 1910. They appear to have been in Bay City MI on the 1880 Census - Charles was born abt 1845 in Canada (as was Agnes) and he's listed as "Len" on that one.

The Canada connection is not surprising - my mother's Burnhams migrated up there just after the American Revolution because they were loyalists so I bet yours did too - to the area around Richmond Quebec.

According to the database "Michigan Marriages, 1868-1925" - an Anna Vitek married a Charles Leonard Burnham at Monroe Michigan on 30 Nov 1920. He's listed as being about 22, born in abt 1898 in Michigan to parents Charles Burnham and Agnes Benore.

Anna's parents are Martin Vitek and Marie Krison (with Anna born in Ohio about 1904). You don't give any time period, but does that match up to the dates/info you've got?

Ellen

Joshua Burnham NC/TN

I am looking for information on Joshua Burnham who married Hannah McPherson/MacPherson on 4 Jan 1816 in Williamson Co. By 1840, his widow Hannah was enumerated in Dyer Co, TN, so he died between 1830 and 1840; place of death is currently unknown by me. The 1830 and prior censuses would put his date of birth between 1761 and 1770. I believe he was born in NC; his wife Hannah is shown enumerated with son David in the 1850 census in Dyer Co at age 66, and her stated place of birth is NC, although their children (2 boys and 2 girls at least) appear to have all been born in Williamson Co. Hannah is no longer enumerated with David's family by the 1860 census, so I believe that she passed away before then. It is possible (but unlikely) that she may be living with one of her other children, but I have not been able to find her. Anyone having information on this family - Joshua or Hannah's parents, the names of their other children, actual birth or death dates, which Burnham family Joshua came from in NC, etc. - who is willing to share would be most appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Lucy Alva (Flournoy) Burnham, wife of William E. Burnham, was, I believe the daughter of Doctor Robert Flournoy and Louisa Adaline (or Adeline) Houston. Louisa Adaline (or Adeline) Houston was the daughter of my 3rd great-grandparents Charles Cleaver Houston and Juliet Carter Yager .

An article in the July 25, 1897 Kansas City Journal available from the Library of Congress web site at http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn86063615/1897-07-25... (page 10, 4th column, bottom of page under title of “Pensions”) indicates that Lucy Alva Flournoy (Burnham) was granted a pension as a "original widow" on July 24, 1897 (her husband William E. Burnham had died on 01 Sep 1896 in Randolph County, Missouri.
1922 Death Certificate of Lucy Alva (Flournoy) Burnham

The death certificate of Lucy Alva (Flournoy) Burnham, wife of William Edgar Burnham and daughter of Doctor Robert Joseph Flournoy and Louisa Adaline Houston can be found online at this URL http://www.sos.mo.gov/images/archives/deathcerts/1922/1922_0.... It appears to me that the informant to the death was Aubrey Ernest Burnham (born about 1879), son of William Edgar and Lucy Alva Flournoy Burnham. I believe that the informant incorrectly identified the father of Lucy Alva (Flournoy) Burnham as Francis M. Flournoy instead of Doctor Robert Joseph Flournoy. He also correctly identified the mother of Alva (Flournoy) Burnham as Adaline Houston. Adaline Houston is, I believe, the daughter of my third great-grandparents Charles Cleaver Houston and Judith Carter Yager.

Comments?

Jim Houston
I'm working up the Willets line from Anita Willets Burnham (1880-1958) my great grandmother, and I believe her parents were Joseph H. Willets and mother Marie Louise (Nichols) Willets. Does the "H" stand for Hewlett in Joseph's name? I'm not through searching, but I have found nothing on Joseph H. Willets and Marie. I am also stuck on Joseph H. Willets' parents, David Willets and Mary Hewlett Willets. I am certain I have not read all my findings thoroughly yet, but I think I need to look through the female siblings and cousins' lines as well to pinpoint it. Nonetheless, I'm having a great time trying and love reading about all my ancestors, there sure are a lot!
Thank you for this wonderful website. cp

In our family Burnham grave yard in Lambton county specifically Sombra / Port Lambton. We definitely have the headstone for a Samuel Burnham and a few Steve's headstones. one quite large. many of the burnham headstones date back to the 1700's.

for all interested Burnham's there is a great museum in sombra with much family name history enrOll Canadian Burnhams. Lots of historical artifacts and written history.

any questions let me know.
marshalburnham@hotmail.com

I can help you with the Burnham ancestry. It goes back to Thomas Burnham of Ipswich....

Anita Willets m. 1906 Alfred Newton Burnham
s/o Telford Burnham b 1843 in Ohio & Caroline Matilda McIntyre

In a book that was used to help "advertise" for the new village of Riverside, IL. Around 1872 or shortly thereafter, they published the pictures of the first 14 stately homes in the village. One of them was the summer residence of the Telford Burnham family.

Telford would have had to have been very wealthy to afford this house, especially with it being one of the first 14 "show" homes constructed. Unfortunately the house (wood frame construction) is no longer standing. It may have succumbed to fire or been demolished for new construction. I recall
from the picture that it had a large fountain in the front.

Riverside was a village planned by Frederick Law Olmstead and was developed for the wealthy as a summer getaway.

My Burnham ancestors also came from Canada (French). My grandfather was Joseph Louis Burnham (b.1890-1955) in Uxbridge MA. He was the youngest child and was a textile mill weaver. His father was Louis Burnham (b.abt.1842 in French Canada). Louis Burnham arrived in the US around 1861 according to census records. They lived in Wisconsin, CT, NH, MA. The US census of 1880 shows them living in Farmington WI and his father Francis (b.abt 1815)is living with him also. Their last name then was listed as Burmen.

I would love to connect with other possible Burnham relatives that came from Canada. The other children of Louis (besides Joseph) were: Mary Sophie, Francis "Frank", Peter, Phoebe, and Stella.

Please let me know if anything sounds familiar.

Ginny Barry DeLong
rdelongs@twcny.rr.com

Dear Janette, your posts here drew me because you are obviously a careful genealogist and because you still live in Ontario! I have been searching for thirteen years for the birth family of James Burnham, born around 1820 in Upper Canada/Canada West, first seen in The Ontario Register, Volume III Page # : 69 / "Western District Marriage Register" Rev. John H. Huston, Methodist Episcopal Church, Dawn 1842-1850:
"James Burnham & Rebecca Brown, both of Zone, 19 March 1845. w: Adin McIntire, Edmond Parker"

Some of their children are in the Methodist Episcopal register of Zone. This James emigrated to the US in 1859, went to Wisconsin (leaving a daughter Alice behind in Zone, where she later married Brice Ennis), is found in the census in Bad Ax Wisconsin in 1860, and then disappears. His son Daniel went back to Zone and married Mary Fleming there in 1870.

I have thought for some time that my James might be a son of Lyman and Catharine Burnham (based only on a lack of other prospects in that barely-populated area and also one unsourced IGI citing) but am stymied, living so far away (North Carolina, USA). Any ideas for me?

Hi Jane,
I don't have any information about Alice.
I think you are correct about this James Burnham being the son of Samuel Herrick Burnham and Jemima Steves. He was born abt 1820. I believe that other Burnhams went to WI also.
In 1861 Lambton, Alice would be near her grandma Jemima, and her uncle Jeremiah Steves Burnham and his wife Jane Rattray.
In 1871 she would be living with her uncle Herrick Burnham and Jane Rollison. Again near Jeremiah S. and Jane with their children.
Sorry I can't help.

I'd be interested in more information on this family. For thirteen years I've been trying to place a James Burnham born in Canada c. 1816-1820. He married Rebecca Brown in Dawn Ontario in 1845. He went to America around 1850 and was in the Wisconsin census of 1860 with all his kids except Alice Burnham b. 1848 who later married Brice Ennis in Zone.

In 1861 in Lambton (near Zone, where she was born and married) near Jemima Burnham also J. P. (or J. S.) Burnham,, wife Jane, also M., John, M., and J. S.

I find an Alice Burnham of the correct age living in the home of H. and Jane Burnham, 1871, in the home of Herrick Burnham and wife Jane. Nearby: S. J. Burnham, wife Jane, children Matilda, John, Malissa, Ida, Alex, George, Alberta.

It was in 1871 that Alice Burnham married Brice Ennis in Zone. There aren't any other Alice Burnhams around. Can anybody help with this?

Obit.:
AFTER LONG ILLNESS
DEATH OF JOSEPH E. BURNHAM
OF SACO TODAY
Deceased Was Insurance Agent and Highly Respected
Joseph E. Burnham, one of Saco's oldest citizens and business men, died at his home on Spring street, Saco, just before noon today. His age was 74 years and nine months. He is survived by a widow and one son, George G. Burnham, who lives in Saco.
The funeral will be held from his late home on Spring street, Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock.
Mr. Burnham was born in Scarborough where he was brought up and received his education and early in life came to Saco where he lived until he was about 40 years of age, when he went to Boston and New York, where he was in business for a number of years.
He came back to Saco quite a number of years ago and entered the employ of James H. Miles, who was deputy sheriff and was also in the insurance business and was later made a member of the firm which did business under the firm name of James H. Miles & Co.
A few years ago on the death of Mr. Miles he continued in the business and also settled up the estate of Mr. Miles. Since he succeeded to the business he was confined to the house a great deal of the time by sickness, but had managed to have his affairs running along all right and had kept his business moving up to the time of his death.
His last sickness was of about six weeks duration, although he had not been confined to his house all of that time. He was last down town about a month ago and since that time he had been steadily growing worse until the end came. For the past week or ten days, death had been expected at almost any time and Sunday morning it was not thought that he would live through the day.
Death came easily, and he passed away peacefully and thus closed a life that had been full of business almost up to the time that he was called home. In disposition he was one of the most mild mannered of men and he made friends easily, retaining the friendship in every case after it had once been formed. He was a man who was respected by young and old and held the esteem of all who knew him. In his business dealings he was always square and upright and his memory will linger long with those who knew him best. He was a member of Saco lodge of Masons; No. 9, and a delagation from that lodge will attend the funeral.
Mr. Burnham is the second insurance agent of Saco to die within a short time, George A. Carter dying suddenly a short time since. He is the third of Saco's well known men to die recently, Joseph H. Means being buried the same week as Mr. Carter.
