My family also thought we were Scottish..lol.I found 99% of my info on the LDS search site. They are not perfect but so much of their faith is put into KNOWING who their ancestors were so they can pray them into heaven, that they do their utmost to make sure their info is correct. Sorry it has taken me so long to answer. I had a computer crash...lost some files...started researching again..found more family in another line...dug through some mysteries ( some of which won't be solved in this lifetime)...then just today saw your post! Feel free to email me at greeneyes57_99@yahoo.com.

William McKenzie Burns, his daughter Lizzie, G.Daug. Vita

Someone posted a picture of my Grandmother Vita Davis taken 1913 at the secound annual Cuten Loose Border Days in Grangeville, Idaho. The banner in the back ground has 2nd annual, first rodeo was 1912. My Grandmother was not even born yet. I have the orginial copy of another piture taken the same day and same spot, it is of my Great Grandmother Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Burns and her husband Floyd Davis. I was told it was there honeymoon. There wedding cert says they where married Nov.1912. I believe that my Grandmother might not be a Davis, so I am looking for any thing about where "Lizzie" was on Feb.17th 1912. May to June 1911?

She was in the US by 1898 when she married my great great grandfather Herbert Frank Boothby. I believe she died somewhere between 1953-60. She had 3 sisters - Florence (or Florrie who died of breast cancer), Sadie (who married Anton Hahn), & Elizabeth Agnes (who married Patrick Joseph Rice). I have no information about Mary T.Burn's parents - can anyone help me with background info?

Alexander Burns and Daniel Creedon were both born in Ireland. I believe that the two of them may have been from the same parish in Ireland.
I would like to hear from somebody who could add to my knowledge of this court case.

John Lane
BURNS (SCOTTLAND/NYC) AND HOPE (ENGLAND/NYC)

I'm trying to figure out how the Hope Family that Immigrated about 1800 from England is related to the Burns family that started to immigrate from Scotland late 1840's. My great grandfather was born Thomas Hope Burns in NYC 20 Dec 1874 to Scottish parents. There is also a Thomas Hope Burns that was born in 14 Jun 1892 in NYC to Scottish parents. I think both of these Thomas Hope Burns are somehow related to the Hope family of England as Thomas Hope Burns doesn't seem to be a very common name.

I'm missing a few links between these families and am hoping some one that has reasearching these families can fill in some of the details.

I have found several instances of family members of Thomas Hope Burns DOB 1892 living with a Thomas Hope Boat Pilot born about 1800.

In 1850 census Thomas Hope, boat pilot age 50 is living with Elizabeth Burns of Scottland (dob about 1823). Elizabeth Burns is Aunt of of Thomas Hope Burns (born 1892). Elizabeth would always use the name Burns in the US census until 1900 when she was going by the name Elizabeth Hope. I don't believe she was ever married to Thomas Hope but I suspect she might have married one of his cousins or nephews. Many Hope family members were boat pilots or port wardens. Thomas Hope Burns (dob 1874) would spend most of his life working as cook or deckhand on boats in New York harbor. The Thomas Hope Burns born in 1892 would become an auto mechanic.

In 1860 Thomas Hope is running a hotel on 206 E 125th ST. He appears to have a wife now named Mary (not sure if Mary is a Burns or not). Also living in the hotel is a Mary Burns of Scotland who is grandmother to Thomas Hope Burns (dob 1892) and Alice Burns who is the Aunt to Thomas Hope Burns (dob 1892)

From census records it appears Mary Burns has at least two other sons from Scottland living in New York. She may have other Burns children living in NYC that I'm unaware of. The chidlren I know of are William a printer and Thomas Burns (DOB 1840). I think the Thomas Burns DOB 1840 could be the father of Thomas Hope Burns (DOB 1892). I'm fairly certain my great grandfather Thomas Hope Burns DOB 1874 is not the father of Thomas Hope Burns (DOB 1892)

In the 1910-1920 census Thomas Hope Burns (dob 1892) is living with Aunts Elisabeth Hope or Alice Burns (never married). His parents likely died when he was young.

I'm hoping someone knows how the Hope and Burns families are related. Burns is a very common name in NYC but Hope is less common. There is another Hope merchant family of Scottish orgin in NYC during this time frame but they don't seem related at all to the Scotish Burns.

Some of the information i'm looking for is:

How did the Burns family of Scottland come to be associated with the Hope family of England in NYC?

When did Thomas Hope, pilot and innkeeper die?

What was the maiden name of the Mary that was living with him when he ran the inn in 1860?

Elizabeth Burns was single most of her life, which member of the Hope Family did she marry after 1880 and when did her Hope husband die?

Who are the parents of Thomas Hope Burns (dob 1892)?

Dave

Hi Todd! I hope you are still out there, nearly 12 years after posting. My great-grandfather, Peter J Peterson, was Martha Peterson Burns sister. I have their ancestry back about 10 generations back in Norway with mostly primary sources. If you get this, please contact me at kcmellem@gmail.com. I'd love to learn more about George Washington Burns and confirm what I have.
Kendall

In search of John Burns & Bessy Ginty of Dublin Ireland

John Burns was born in Ireland about 1820.

He and Elizabeth Quinn of Mulliganstown, County Westmeath, had a daughter Marcella 18 Feb 1838. Marcella emigrated to America in 1857, married, and had no children.

In about 1850 John Burns married Bessy Ginty and resided in Dublin.

They had three children: Mary (born about 1850), Clara (born about 1852) and Joseph ( born 19 Mar 1854).

All three children emigrated to Plain City, Ohio, USA.

Joseph, at an early age, supported himself as a plasterer. He might have learned that trade from his father.

John has about 50 descendants who have been trying to get information about John Burns and Bessy Ginty of Dublin for almost a century, but have failed.

Any assistance from Ireland would be deeply appreciated.

His wife's name was Catherine Gray and they had a son named John Burns born Nov. 2nd, 1836 in LaSalle, Mi. Could this be him? Thanks, Jenny, Albuquerque, NM.

George W. Burns B:1847 in Pennsylvania D:1916 Binghamton, NY

I've been working on this road block for nearly a year and am hopeful someone may see this post and have some clues that could lead me to discover where in Pennsylvania my George W. Burns was born so that I may figure out the names of his parents and eventually trace their origins back to Scotland.

There are many George W. Burns born in Eastern Pennsylvania around the mid 1800's. My particular George married Esther Martin daughter of Richard and Susan Ann McDermott Seward. Esther was most likely born in Union, Broome, NY on 12/15/1847. While still young moved to Harmony, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania with her parents and siblings.

Esther and George lived in Harmony when they were first married and then moved to Schoharie, New York where their first son was born, George Albert Burns (1871). Shortly after, two more sons were born: Frank R. (1872) and Fred N. (1877)

George Esther and kids finally moved to Binghamton, Broome, New York where George W. and George A. were in business with George A's father in law, James Conklin. The owned a grocery store on Robinson Street in Binghamton and lived on Griswold right around the corner.

George, Esther, and at least two of their sons are buried in Floral Park Cemetery, Johnson City, New York.

I've seen records of George W. Burns living in Harmony, PA and have seen records of his descendants living in Dalton, PA and Chincilla, PA.

Other clues are George W's father is supposed to have been born in Scottland according to census records and he is supposed to be related to Robert Burns the famous poet according to family history.

Any clues would be appreciated. I can also be contacted at fishracing323-1@yahoo.com. Thank you.

TJ Fish

Patrick Burns s/o James Burns and Catherine Ellis (Heliss?)

I'm looking for more information on the parents of Patrick Burns born 1860 near Burrit's Rapids, Ontario. He moved to Wausau, WI in 1879. The only information I have on his parents is their names: James Burns and Catherine Heliss (probably supposed to be Ellis), that they were born in Ireland, and lived in Canada. I have no idea when/where they were married, when they were born, or where in Ireland they are from. I only know they immigrated from Ireland to Canada.

Thank you

Hello Cheryl, I lived for several years at 44 Crestwood Ave in Nutley, down the street from your mom. She was Deena Woodward when we were in high school. I have been searching for her and your post from 2000 came up on Google today. I knew Larry Burns when he & your mom were seeing each other & even dated Jack Ryan for a while. Haven't seen or heard from your mom since 1975 when we moved to Fla. I'm sorry to say I have no information about Larry except what you already know, but I really am trying to contact Deena if she is still living. I can be contacted on Facebook. Thank you.
Obit of Charles T. Burns 1925

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

CHARLES T. BURNS
JUNE 4, 1925

Charles T. Burns died at his home in Chatsworth at about 4 o'clock Sunday morning, May 31, at the age of 64 years, 11 months and 10 days.
He had been in poor health for many months and his condition appeared to reach a critical stage last Thursday. His sister, Mrs. Ergang and her husband were present in the home, and together with their sisters, Miss Anna and Miss Mary who have long devoted themselves to ministering to Mr. Burns, the family watched beside the patient through the night. Near the hour of four, they observed that he was approaching the end and his passing away was peaceful.
Funeral services were conducted in SS. Peter and Paul's church at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning, with Requiem Mass by the pastor, the Rev. Fr. Edw. Hearn. Chatsworth Council, Knights of Columbus, of which Mr. Burns was a charter member, attended in a body, and the community was represented by a large number of citizens paying their respects to the memory of their friend and neighbor. The business houses closed during the funeral services.
Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery in Ashkum. The following served as pall bearers, T.J. O'Connor, W.A. Coughlin, J.C. Corbett, James Garrity, A.J. Sneyd and James Kerrins.
Mr. Burns was the oldest member of his family. One brother, James died in youth. The survivors of the family are Misses Anna and Mary and Thomas E. Burns, of Chatsworth; Mrs. Catherine Ergang, of Chicago; Walter and William, of Ashkum, and Terence of Lacon, all of whom were present at the funeral, with many other relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. Norman R. Herlihy and Miss Mary McGuire, of Chicago and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Callahan, of Westport, South Dakota, were among the relative and friends who came to the Burns home to be present at the funeral.
Mr. Burns will be mourned as a loyal citizen and a true friend and devoted brother and relative.
Charles Tryone Burns was born in Chicago June 11, 1860, and was a son of Thomas and Eliza (Gallagher) Burns. The family moved to Ashkum township, Iroquois county, Illinois, in July 1863 and Charles grew to manhood on the farm. He received his education in the public schools; which was supplemented by one term in the commercial department of the Northern Indiana Normal School at Valparaiso, Ind.
He remained at home until he came to Chatsworth in 1893 and embarked in the hardware business as a member of the firm of Sneyd and Burns. That relation was continued until 1899, when his brother Thomas purchased the interest of Mr. Sneyd. About eight years ago, Mr. Burns sustained severe injuries when he was struck by an automobile and a long period of confinement to his bed ensued. His health declined perceptibly from that time, and in September, 1924, he disposed of his store and retired to his home.
Mr. Burns was successful in business; a fair measure of prosperity crowned his efforts and he won the good will and confidence of his customers and associates. His fellow citizens honored him with office and he served as a village trustee for many years. As a member of the board he was progressive, advocating measures that seemed beneficial to the best interests of the village. In his active years he served as a member of the volunteer fire company.

Allan and Anne Burns - Scotland to Chicago IL 1883 and 1884

Hi,

I recently discovered my Great Great Grandparents names, Allan McNaughton Burns and Annie Louisa Burns (Robertson). They came to America from Scotland in 1883 (Allan) and 1884 (Anne). The only information I have is that Allan was born in Scotland in 1857 and both mom and dad are Scottish. Anne was born in 1858 in Scotland to a Scottish father (presumed John Robertson) and Irish mother (Eleanor Carr). They settled in Chicago Ill in the early 1900s. Sometime after 1900 and before 1920 Allan died as in the 1920 census Annie is listed as a widow.

Allan and Annie had my Great Grandmother Mary Agnes (or Agnes Mary) in 1887 in Chicago, and she had my Grandmother Adele Louise Tomlin in 1917 in Oklahoma.

Any information on Allan and Annie would be lovely!

Are your family bibles (Burns) from NY by any chance? You sound like you have quite a collection and nice enough to offer to help.

From what I heard, an uncle sadly discarded our family bible thinking no one cared...I wish he would have asked me...

thank you, Mary
