J. William Burris- owner of "Riverview" (previously, "Charles McLaran House")

Dedicated to the Burris and McLaran ancestors/lineage who owned and maintained for public civic functions "Riverview" located at 514 Second Street South, Columbus City, Lowndes County, Mississippi.

Historically, "Charles McLaran House" (since 1940 called the "Riverview" when purchased by J. William Burris) was constructed in Columbus City, Mississippi, during the period 1847 - 1853 on the bluffs of Pleasant Ridge, about 100 feet above the east side of the Tombigbee River.

This classic Greek Revival residence is massive in scale and boasts two primary facades, each with a monumental portico. During the 19th century, the property encompassed an entire block of Columbus’s 1821 grid plan. Riverview is a highly unified composition that exemplifies classical architecture's principles of symmetry and proportion. The combination of its stately exterior and extraordinarily elegant interior is a consummate expression of high-style Greek Revival architecture. Riverview is a two-and-one-half story brick residence.

Back in 1844, Colonel Charles McLaran (10 December 1808 - 12 December 1891, 3558 Lindell Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri) directed slave labor in the building of his home (Riverview), arranging the downstairs rooms so that connecting doors opened into a ballroom. The architect of the "Charles McLaran Home" was James S. Lull.

During the Civil War, Columbus belles danced and flirted politely at parties in this mansion for General Bedford Forrest's men.

During World War II, the sister of J. William Burris- Mrs. Fannie H. (Burris) Swoope- occasionally held public civic functions inside the mansion. Wife of Walter Ashby Swoope (insurance & real estate manager of Columbus City), Fannie did her patriotic part as hostess of "Riverview" in holding social functions for the "Columbus Army Flying School" (later changed to "Columbus Army Air Field", 28 April 1943) Air Force cadets and their beautiful belles of Columbus City. Such social events included the well-known "Southern Hoopskirt Party". In 1942 - 1945, several of these events were held inside the mansion with the approval and support offered by Colonel Louis "Louie" Clifford Mallory, USAAF (Columbus Army Flying School commandant, 21 October 1941 - 05 April 1945). Additionally, both Theodore C. & his wife Marie H. Russell would assist Fannie providing entertainment in the parlor with Marie playing the 100-year old harp to her husband's violin accompaniment (Theodore was the music department head of Columbus College) as the cadets & belles listened- as was done when Forrest's cavalrymen serenaded & danced with southern belles with the harp and violin.

William H. Burris and Leonard Burris buried in Lettsvile Cemtery, IA

I am trying to find out about Willis (or William) L. Burris.

I find a Leonard Burris in the 1880 census, born 1844 age 36. His first wife was Elizabeth Reed..they divorced in 1883. He then married an Emma or Emily Barnes. It looks like Emma had been married to Leonard's brother William H, as the 1900 census shows Willis L as the stepson of Leonard.
Both William H. (1841-1879) and Leonard (1845-1894) are buried in the Lettsville Cemetry, Iowa. I believe they are brothers.

I would like to confirm that Willis L. Burris was the son of William Burris...and then stepson to Leonard Burris.

I find an Emily L. Burris buried in the Mason City Memorial Park Cemetery 12/21/1901-6/3/1970. Is this William's and Leonard's wife??

If anyone has information about Willis L. Burris, I would love to hear from you. I am trying to find what happened to him. Willis L. Burris had married a Grace Leu (maiden name Epperson) in 1904 in Galesburg, Illinois...the marriage license says she was 19 and he was 25 living in Riverside Iowa. Grace Darling is part of my family and I am trying to find out what happened to her.

There is a Willis L. Burris (2/20/1878-3/10/1939) buried with his wife Corrine (7/3/1899-11/17/1973) buried in the Sunset Hill Cemetery, Warrensburg, Missouri Cemetery, but I do not know if this is the son of William/Emma Burris. If so, it would be nice to know what happened to Grace after she married Willis L...A Willis shows in the 1915 census married to Corrine with a 4 year old daughter named Emma.
Did Grace and Willis get a divorce, or did she die?

Any help in find out what happened to Willis L Burris and his first wife Grace Darling would be most appreciated.

Thank you,
Anna

Henry Burris/Burress/Burris Kentucky, Tennesse, Virgina HELP!! There is a tad bit of info here

Hello I'm looking for info on a Henry Burris/Burress/Burriss
I'm not for sure if he was born in either Kenutcky Or Tennessee he was married twice the 1st to a Polly Gray and then a second to Mary Ann "Polly" Bond.

It's pretty confusing to me as to the children because of the 1900 census that places two Henry Burris's and Mary Anne's in two households at the same time of daughters i believe that were both theyrs. A Elizabeth "Lizzy" Richards and a Martha Ann Wilson in both residences the couple is recorded as being married in 1848.

My great great grandfather was George Richard Burris whom married Sophia G Gilpin both buried here in DeWitt County, Illinois. Whom is the son of Henry Burris and Mary "Polly" Bond. On his death record it says Polly "Sweetin" and that he was born in Adair County, however on a nursing home document (which im about to upload) it says he was born in Wayne County Kentucky and that his mother was Mary Ann "Polly" Bond.

A William Robert Burris was Born to a Henry Burris and a Mary "Polly" Boun or so its spelled on William Robert's death record.

Now on the 1860 census it states
Name: Henry Burress
Age in 1860: 39
Birth Year: abt 1821
Birthplace: Kentucky
Home in 1860: Russell, Russell, Kentucky
Gender: Male
Post Office: Creelsboro
Value of real estate: View image
Household Members:
Name Age
Henry Burress 39
Mary Ann Burress 36
Martha Ann Burress 12
William Burress 11
Sarah Burress 8
Richard Burress 1

So there is a Martha Ann, William and Richard (George Richard my gg grandfather) all within a year or 2 of theyre ages.

Now onto the 1870 Census
Henry S Burress
Age in 1870: 47
Birth Year: abt 1823
Birthplace: Kentucky
Home in 1870: East Fork, Metcalfe, Kentucky
Race: White
Gender: Male
Post Office: East Fork
Value of real estate: View image
Household Members:
Name Age
Henry S Burress 47
Mary A Burress 41
Wm R Burress 19
Sarah R Burress 17
George R Burress 11
Henry A Burress 8
Mary E Burress 4
Pamelia F Burress 4/12

Now as you can see Martha Ann is no longer in the household but William, Sarah and George Richard still are and also a Mary E. "Elizabeth" (whom i believe is Lizzie Richards)

Onto the 1880 census
Name: Henry Burris
Age: 58
Birth Year: abt 1822
Birthplace: Kentucky
Home in 1880: Gradyville, Adair, Kentucky
Race: White
Gender: Male
Relation to Head of House: Self (Head)
Marital Status: Married
Spouse's Name: Mary Burris
Father's Birthplace: Virginia
Mother's Birthplace: Virginia
Neighbors: View others on page
Occupation: Farm Laborer
Household Members:
Name Age
Henry Burris 58
Mary Burris 51
George R. Burris 21
Henry Burris 17
Elizabeth Burris 15
Permeala F. Burris 10

Here William Robert is gone but George R. and Elizabeth are still here. I read an email that was posted on a genealogy.com profile page that a womans great great grandparents were a Lizzie and Warner Richards and that her parents were Henry Burress/burris and a Mary "Polly" Bond and went into alot of detail about Lizzie, and how they never EVER talked about her family as if she was shunned or somthing.

Now onto Martha A. Wilson, here death record says
Name: Martha A Wilson
[Martha A Harris]
Death Date: 16 Feb 1929
Death Location: Adair
Age: 80
Gender: Female
Ethnicity: White
Birth Date: 25 Mar 1848
Birth Location: Kentucky
Father's Name: Henry Harris
Father's Birth Location: Kentucky
Mother's Name: Pollie Bon
Mother's Birth Location: Kentucky

Well it's a transcription error and you can clearly see it's a "B" for Burris and not "H" for Harris especially if you use the zoom tool its the "y" in Henry that drops down kind making it look kinda like an "H" heres the link.
http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...

So it says Marthas mother was Polly Bon, William's Polly Boun and my George Richards Polly Bond and from the email Elizabeth's/Lizzie's Polly Bond all fathers being Henry Burris/Burress

Now onto the trouble making hair-ripping out censuses of 1900. The Lizzie Richards household.

Name: Henry H Burress
Age: 81
Birth Date: May 1819
Birthplace: Kentucky
Home in 1900: Jamestown, Russell, Kentucky
[Russell]
Race: White
Gender: Male
Relation to Head of House: Father-in-law
Marital Status: Married
Spouse's Name: Mary A Burress
Marriage Year: 1848
Years Married: 52
Father's Birthplace: Kentucky
Mother's Birthplace: Kentucky
Household Members:
Name Age
Warren H Richards 37
Lizzie Richards 34
Nora D Richards 13
Marcus E Richards 9
Walter H Richards 6
Elbridge L Richards 1
Henry H Burress 81
Mary A Burress 70

In this on its Henry H. Not Henry S. but married in 1848 and living with Lizzie.
And now onto the other 1900 census

Name: Henry Burress
Age: 84
Birth Date: May 1816
Birthplace: Kentucky
Home in 1900: White Oak, Adair, Kentucky
[Adair]
Race: White
Gender: Male
Relation to Head of House: Head
Marital Status: Married
Spouse's Name: Mary A Burress
Marriage Year: 1848
Years Married: 52
Father's Birthplace: Tennessee
Mother's Birthplace: Tennessee
Household Members:
Name Age
Henry Burress 84
Mary A Burress 77
Martha A Wilson 50
Daisy R Wilson 13
William W Wilson 10

Now this is the same year 1900 and in this census the elderly Henry Burress is the head of the household and also married in 1848 but is in Adair County not Russell County like the previous census record. and states that his father and mother were from Tennessee and not Kentucky like the previous record.

Any thoughts or info or insight?

Martha and Elizabeth were never in the same household by census records but were both at one time in the same household as William Robert, Sarah and George Richard. with all these children having Henry Burris/Buress as father and Mary "Polly" Bond or Bon or Boun as the mother awful big coincidence if you ask me with the mothers last name.

I'd rather not go bald before im 30 any help or explanation would be greatly appreciated....and if you are related to a George Richard Burris or a Sophia Godson Gilpin I found an old picture in my mothers attic of the both of them I uploaded it and its on my tree, Reita Jones Burress has another one she uploaded on here years back.

I thank you if you made it through this post I know it may be alot of info, look foward to hearing from you.

Hi, I haven't come across any of our direct line who lived in Connecticut, but I may have some saved information. I'll let you know if I come across anything.

Do you know if he had a Quaker heritage? Most of mine were Quakers during that period. Some worked with the Underground Railroad before and during the civil war.

BURRIS, Zachariah 1746-1848 DE, MD, VA, OH

According to his obit, Zachariah Burris was born late in 1746 in Sussex County, Delaware and died 9 Nov 1848 in Butler County, Ohio at the home of his son, John. Bennett Pancoast in his work Pancoasts in America states that Zachariah was married to Mary Edwards. They were married in Delaware, moved through Maryland and settled near Wheeling West Virgina which was still Virgina at that time. Later some of the family moved to Ohio.

I recently saw some public family trees that gave his parents as John Burris/Burr of Kent, England and Elizabeth McMann. I would like to know what source or sources link this couple to Zachariah.

Fern,

Oops I found my mistake - there was a Jacob Burris on the 1900 Hancock Co., IN census. His household must be near Elisha so I jumped to conclusions. I have found the records on Moses Marion now. I have noticed a lot of the given names in the Burris family have been passed down in my family.

I see this is the first time you have posted, at least under this user name. There are some ways you can increase your chances of getting the information you want. First, it sounds like you want to hear from family members? Or do you want other information about them?
It always helps to post what information you might know such as birth marriage and death dates. Even an educated guess can help. Also, say where they lived.
Also, post on the board in the state or county they lived in. You can find the correct board by putting the name in the box at the bottom of this page. If you don't know a county for a certain city, try googling it.
Most often when you post you will get help from volunteers. If you get really lucky, you will hear from people who are related. I find this is happening more often, as more people are interested in genealogy. However, the more info you post, the more likely you will be successful.
Good luck, and let me know if you want resources on particular areas.
Hi Susan. Did you change your name? We always called you Susan when we were staying in Huntington with Grandma. We live in a small town south of Dallas. Both of us are still working. My daughter, Suzanne, is a probation officer for Dallas County-has two sons. Husband is a school teacher. Our son is a mechanical engineer, same as his daddy.

More later

Gail

Hi Gail, Gordon here, Suzanne's Husband. You are about my last hope here, can you identify the younger people in this picture> I know the Logues, but nobody knows the younger women. It is not Suzanne, her mother, or her sister. Thanks

Are you on Face Book? All of the Logue and burris families seem to be, and Suzanne's Sister and her daughter are on there as well.

We have sunny weather here-no rain for some time. It is not real cold, so we have been enjoying being outdoors walking, etc.
My mother, Helen, died this last May.She was only sick-the last two weeks of her life. I sure miss her.
Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas. I hope to hear more from you.

Suzanne

I am looking for my husband's missing Burris line. We have limited information, as it appears his grandmother's parents died while she was young and her and her siblings were handed out to family members. Here is what I have

Parents: John Burris dob: unknown, dod: about 1926
Carrie Burris dob: unknown, dod: about 1933

Parents supposedly died in Georgia.

Children: Martha Louise Burris (married Raymond Stevens)
dob: April 13, 1924 Savannah, Georgia
dom: July 24, 1944 Augusta, Georgia

Martha had 3 brothers. Rumors have at least 1 brother moving to California as an adult.

Would appreciate any help in locating information.

Patrick T Burris

I'm interested in locating Patrick T Burris who in 1976 recorded an interview with his grandfather, James N. Price who was raised on the family farm near Bridgeport, Lawrence County, Illinois. I'd also be interested in contacting any of his relatives or any descendants of the individuals named in this post.

I am researching the descendants of Benjamin Franklin Malone, who settled in Lawrence County, Illinois by 1827. Benjamin Malone's daughter, Lydia Jane Malone, married Marshall Stivers.
Their daughter Emma K. Stivers married Charles Wesley Price.
Charles and Emma's son Leavitt Price married Stella Elizabeth Day.
Leavitt and Stella's son was James N. Price, who married Marjorie F. ____.

I have considerable information about Benjamin's father and grandfather, as well as his uncles, aunts and cousins. I'm looking for descendants of Benjamin Franklin Malone to review a book that I am writing on his father and uncle who settled in Gibson County, Indiana Territory around 1815.

-Steve
