Hi! My name is Pam Wagler and I am helping a friend do her husband's family tree. (His name is Kenny Mattson.) Kenny's mother was Catherine Ione Burroughs, who was a daughter of Pearlie Burroughs who was a brother to Charles Ellison Burroughs. I'm trying to get back farther on Charles Ellis Burroughs' side. Also, while I have your ear...Kenny said his family always claimed that they were related to Jesse James. I looked up his family tree and there ARE Burroughs listed, but I have no way of connecting if I can't get back further on Charles. I can't find any info of him in Pekin, Tazewell Co., Illinois, but I did find a LOT of Burroughs on findagrave in the East Peoria Cemetery of the same county???? Would love to hear from you and am hoping you can help me out. Thanks in advance!

It sounds like you and I may have a connection through Ella Burroughs. Please send me more info that you might have on Ella's family. She would have been my father's grandmother. It has been difficult to trace my parents' ancestors. I'd appreciate any help you can give. Thanks, Vicki

My husband is Stan Hoaglun, son of Walter, who is son of Ella & Andrew Hoaglun. Of course, Ella is also his grandmother. He never knew Andrew, but when they moved from Mpls. to BigFork, they stayed with Ella & Charlie. According to Nora Odegard Hoaglun's (Stan's mom)chart Frederic Halvorson's wife was Marie Ella Anderson, (Sweden) presumed died wherever Frederic was in 1910. One of the family persons who has been doing some genealogy is Cris Brown, Bovey, Minnesota. She is daughter of Loretta Hoaglun Kluck. Loretta was the oldest of Walter's and would probably have remembered alot more. Unfortunately she passed away 3 years ago gone. Cris and I are the only ones that have much on the Hoaglun side, and we aren't sure if it's all correct. Nothing on the Halvorson side except where they were born and died. Both Charlie & Ella were gone when I met Stan, although he talked alot about Ella & Charlie. Hope you can find some things that will help.

Cox.net recently took away all personal web space. I had to find a new place to upload my report on the BURROUGHS family of Newtown.

http://swarling.mywebcommunity.org/burroughs/newtown000t.htm

The new server is slower so it takes a while for the larger pages to load.

I also updated the report to include the changes that I have made the last few years. Notice the paragraph near the beginning about the immigrant John BURROUGHS likely having been an indentured servant.

Steve Warling

Hi Todd,

We now have 3 people tested who descend from Samuel BURROUGH of Gloucester Co NJ and they all match each other very well. One, like you, is a descendant of Edward5 BURROUGHS (Josiah4, Jacob3, Samuel2 BURROUGH, Samuel1) of Meigs Co OH. The second is a descendant of Reuben5 BURROUGH (Joseph4, Samuel3, Samuel2, Samuel1). The third is a descendant of Jesse J.5 BURROUGHS (probably Job4, Jacob3, Samuel2 BURROUGH, Samuel1).

We don't need participants like we did 4 years ago, but you are welcome to join the DNA project to prove that you are a descendant of Samuel1. The cost is $128 or $153, depending on which test you order. For more information, send me an E-mail.

E-mail before the @ = SWarling
E-mail after the @ = cox.net

Steve Warling

The earliest photo I have is of my great-grandfather Alfred Edward in front of his wagon in Longmont, CO. It is probably from about 1910.
Edward's daughter, Hannah(Blood) and her brother, William (my gg-grandfather) went to Colorado. I believe it was for the silver mining. There was a Burroughs mine there, but I have no idea if it was part of our Burroughs family that owned it. Several members of the family are buried in the Golden cemetery and I believe there are family members still living in Golden.

No I don't have a death date for Jarvis, but of what iv heard, he died in Colorado. I'm not sure what he was doing out there.
Do you have any pictures of any Burroughses from this time period (1880-1910) or artifacts? I have one photo of Jarvis's son, George Burroughs(my great great grandfather), C. 1900

I don't know if Steve Warling got a copy of this message, but he and I got together and my cousin submitted his DNA which was a match to Guy Colby's which showed that they were descended from Edward. Steven and I worked on the Burrough/Burroughs tree for several months and he found a descendant of Samuel Burrough through Samuel's son Rueben his DNA proved to be a match to Guy's and my cousin's so that we now know that Edward Burrough(s) was a descendant of Samuel Burrough. If you would like further information on the family please contact me at kchen435@suddenlink.net.
Do you have a death date for Jarvis? I have never been able to find one, but I know that he was in Denver, CO in the early 1900's.

I have read in an Scottish History book the origin (in the author's opinion) of the name Burroughs. Apparently there was a faction of many similar sounding surname people in Normandy, France in about 1100 A.D., among them were the Burke, De Burgh, and Burroughs(yes this spelling, not Burrows like ancestry.com and other sites claim it is a variation of.)

Anyway, in 1169, under Strongbow, two of the De burgh clans moved from Normandy to Ireland to the English Colony, one taking on the name "Burke". Another set of De' Burgh's moved to England and became "Burroughs".

The book I got this information from was "The Scottish Nation" by William Anderson, Published 1877

My lineage goes:
Edward Burroughs
Jarvis Burroughs(James"Jarvis", other spellings)
George Burroughs
Loyal D. Burroughs
James L. Burroughs
Troy L.
I have a Ggrandmother who was Ella Burroughs, born in 1883 in Grasston, MN. Maiden name Halverson, married first to Andrew Hoaglun, children: Florence, Walter,Olga, Ellen, Elroy, Myrtle Violet, Gladys, Ruth & Frederic. Andrew died in 1924, Ella married Charles Burroughs in 1927. She died in 1941 in Itasca, MN. I have been searching for info on Frederic Halverson, born in 1852 in Sweden, wife named Maria (last name unknown). Fred was killed in a sawmill accident in 1912 in Tacoma, WA. Do you have any info on him and what his connection may be to my Ella Halverson Burroughs?

I'd like more information on Mary Cordelia who married a Wilson sometime between 1870 and 1880. In the 1880 Census for New Haven, MI, she is listed as widowed and has a 4yr old daughter named Hattie B... I have no information on her deceased husband/Hattie's father.

Mary Cordelia then remarried a Burroughs at some point after 1880 because she is listed as living with her daughter Hattie B (Koehler) in the 1920 Census with the last name Burroughs in Oakland, MI. Hattie married a Fred Koehler and had 6 children with him (Clara, Herbert, Freddie, Roy, Russell, and Warren) if that helps any!

Thanks for any information you can provide!!
