Martin Burton b. 1817 KY and d. before 1870, married Mary "Polly" Wilson in 31 Aug 1837 in Harrison County, Indiana. Mary's parents were Uriah Wilson and Nancy Maidlain. Martin's parents are the ones I am searching for. Martin did live in Dunklin County, Missouri and across the Mississippi River in Obion County, Tennessee.
The Burton's, Huffstutter's, and Wilson's moved as a group from Kentucy to Harrison County, Indiana. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Harold H Burton of Maine son of Donald Daniel Burton & Mary Ann Montgomery

I noticed a lot of people have his death confused with another Harold H Burton - on here and other genealogy websites.

Harold Henry Burton was shot and killed by his 16 year old son Raymond - August 5, 1955 in their home in Milo, Maine.
My grandmother (Harold was her uncle) told me this today (also said Harold was abusive) so I did a little research and found a few news articles about it to verify.

1955 articles

The Lewiston Daily Sun:
August 6 page 13
August 8 - front page
August 9 page 5

The Bridgeport Telegram
August 6? page 11

Meriden Journal
August 6 page 5

I'm sure there are others with the rest of the story but I wasn't able to find it by searching (except the 2 out of state papers and a couple Lowel papers that you have to pay for).
My grandmother said that the son went to juvi but people knew what kind of a man his father was and that as soon as he got out he was adopted. So the story goes, haven't found further articles yet.
She also mentioned his wife Vera was a tiny, quiet, nice woman originally from Canada.

George Washington Burton was my g-g-g grandfather and was from Virginia 1822. He also had a son named after him who was born in the 1850's. There is a Jeptha in my family tree and they all ended up in Harrison County, Missouri. If you would like to e-mail me regarding this, I would be glad to share all I have on the subject. bedonnaj@msn.com

Okay you haven't replied to my message so let me say I thought it was impossible to do - find a birthmother well I did it after 44 years and two countries - Germany and USA. It took me 7 months and I was a wild woman posting and emailing plus with a common first and last name - Miller I just died when I got her married name. So on the web I went and yes it was alot of work but worth it. So don't give up hope. I wish you luck and contact me if you want help.
Sandy

Everyone...

My biggest complaint on Ancestry.com is the use of incorrect terminology with the records. Prior to the Declaration of Independence in 1776 ... there was no UNITED STATES. The Americas were colonies of various European powers.

Please respect history and use the correct terms.

Re: jane flora burton

In the Burton family that I have researched, there is a Flora Jane Burton who married a Walter McBride. She was born in 1848 and died in 1935, and was the daughter of Joshua Burton (b1829) and Catherine Johnston (b1830). Flora's siblings were: John, Peter, Nancy, Emaline, Hester, Elizabeth, James, Josephine, Debra, George, William, Samuel, Mary Louise, and Walter. This family lived in Washington Co., OH. Perhaps if you research this family, you would find your great grandma farther down the line-perhaps one of her brothers named their daughter after her.

A quick check of Ancestry.com trees shows that she is the daughter of John W. Burton and and Nancy F. Joy. This John is the sibling of Flora as listed above. She was born in Marietta and died in Cuyahoga Falls.

Now I see that you have your own tree on Ancestry. If you look at the tree "James Drain Sr.; John S. McDonald; Gilbert Johnson families" by Phillip O'Shea, he has a lot of information on the Burtons. Good luck.

Dear Greg, so sorry for not replying sooner but truth be told i got disheartened last year because my search seemed to be getting me nowhere... Then last week i decided to get back on the trail and have just found your message.

Thank you so much for the information... I appreciate it and apologise sincerely for checking my messages. You must think i'm an ignorant so and so....
Since last year i have managed to get my grandfathers birth certificate with names and addresses . My great grandfather by all accounts was listed as a rubber traveller for his occupation. His address was in newport and edith lived in cardiff. I am puzzled as to why they had seperate addresses if they were married, and she is listed as edith scott formerly oliver. My quest continues. But thanks again for your help...

Kind regards
Shaz ball

This is my grandfather who migrated from near Liverpool prior to 1901 to Canada and then into Wyoming Territory ca. 1901 where he was a jeweler's apprentice in the employ of Hiram R. Daniels in Douglas, Wyoming. He married my grandmother there in 1905 and set up shop in Wheatland, Wyo.
He fathered two children Richard & Nellie Burton. The marriage broke up in 1910 when grandma and kids returned to OOhio. After an attempt to reconcile, they were divorced in 1912 in Marion, Ohio. He had a sister, Nellie who lived in Chicago but I've been unable to locate either since that time. Any help would be most appreciated.
Grandson,
Dick Daly

Hello,
I just ran across your query in regards to the envelope you have from Helen Burton. My name is Tim Burton, and Helen was my Great Aunt (my fathers Aunt) She was a grand woman who did everything with a flourish and a great deal of style. I know the envelope you have very well, and have many of them myself. Aunt Helen was a major letter writer, and wrote very long letters which she would almost always place in these very fancy envelopes to mail to friends. I don't believe she actually ever sold them at the Camels Bell. They were specifically for her own personal use. If you would like to know more about her, contact me via e-mail at tim.burton@yes-reps.com
By the way, I noticed you are from England, and I have a daughter who lives in Brighton England, and has for many years. Small world is it not?

Yes, I sure do. Uncle Jack was the favorite uncle. He married my Aunt Julia when I was 4 years old. They only had one son -Noel, who was you Dad's and my only 1st cousin.
Your Dad and I were close until my Grandparents and I moved to Victoria. I then lost contact with your Dad and Noel. Later , Uncle Jack had moved to Victoria also, and Noel moved to Chemaimus(on the island) to raise his family. When I finally got a computer, I started seaching for your Dad and Noel. Found out that Noel had died of cancer as his Father, Uncle Jack had done, many years before.I am in contact with 2 of Noel's daughters--Jennifer Palmer Ciccone, and Jill Palmer. There is also an older daughter Susan and a son Brent. They are Uncle Jack's Grandchildren.
Uncle Jack was loved by so many as he loved kids and whenever he would visit, would take all the neighborhood kids to the store for ice cream and candy. A wonderful man, and missed so much.
I eventually found your Dad, but that has been another story. He does not seem to want to keep in contact, and not interested in the family here.
After finding your Dad and Noel, my Mother suggested I try and find the family in England. Took some time, but finally found Rob and Gill, who do not want to stay in touch. Gill is Rob's second wife and not the Mother of his 4 children. His first wife died of cancer about 4 years ago. My Dad visited the family during the 2nd world war when he was overseas, and had a picture taken on one of the chairs that are kept by the drawing room fireplace. I cannot find an record or copy of this picture, and Gill knows nothing about it.They are very reluctant to give out ant information. One of Uncle Jack's Granddaughter's -Jill- was in England a couple of years ago, and phoned Gill at Longner to arrange a tour of the estate. and was refused.
Seems like they are hiding something, or are very unfreindly.
Fran.

My fathers birth name was William Robert but after my Grandmother divorced Robert (Bill) she had my Dad's name changed to William Allen. My Dad also goes by the name Bill. My Dad still holds some animosity towards his Dad and the whole abandonment thing. When his mother died Robert had my Dad Bill sent from Chicago to Saskatoon to live with Dorothy and her husband Ken Cronk - they eventually adopted Bill and never had any children of their own. I was named David Kenneth after my mother's Dad (David Uhrich) and my Great Uncle Kenneth Cronk. As a child we visited Aunt Dorothy and Uncle Ken just about every summer but never met any other relatives except some guy who we called Uncle Jack Palmer. Any idea who he was?

Hi Auntie Fran:
I get all the information mixed up and I haven't been working on this for awhile now! Just stumbled across these posts :)
I just emailed David as I do not have too much information on:
Robert
Cyril
Dorothy
Julia
Those are great grandpa's children right? Other than Grandpa of course.
Yes I do know that Grandpa was born in Wales.. Auntie Jackie has a lot of information that Granny left in the Burkes Book with dates etc... She is giving me the book for safe keeping and I am proud to have it and will surely look after it.

Hi Sandi: Grandpa had been living in Canada for some time, when the estate was to be taken over by Richard( who was in New Zealand on a safari and could not be located.) Grandpa was sent for to take over the estate as next in line to inherit. He moved his family over to longner and my oldest uncle was sent to university to learn property management. Then Richard suddenly arrived back in England with a New Zealand wife to take over Logner hall, so Grandpa and his family came back to Canada. As you probably know, my Dad was born in Wales when my Grandparents were visiting Longner and had gone to Wales on a business week-end.
I suspect a family rift developed over all this, as communication with the family became less for my Grandparents. I have tried to mend this rift with Rob and Gill, but it has not worked as they do not wish to keep in contact. Had some contact with another cousin Peter Wauchope, but that has stopped as well. I suspect he may have passed away as he was elderly and not too well.
Fran

Dear Richard: Thanks for the latest info. I had another cousin living at the Preston Boat houses-Peter Wauchope, but have lost contact with him, and had another distant relative in England trying to find him, but no luck. So, I presume he has passed away. He was not too well when we last communucated.I did some communucating with Rob and Gill(presemnt owers of Longner),and got a bit of info from them, but they do not seem to want to stay in contact.Gill did send pictures of the staircase and the beautiful stained glass window with my ancestors in it. From my Grandparents I learned that in the little arched windows, are all the coats of arms of all the ladies who married into the family. My Grandmother's coat of arms is among them. The little jug you have, would probably only sentimental value to a direct Burton decendant.
Fran Haslett.

You are so right :)
My Great Uncle was born 19 Nov 1916 at Longner Hall and was there until his son Robert Lingen (b 20 April 1943)inherited the estate! Robert and Gill are presently at Longner Hall.

My Great Grandfather (Edward b 15 May 1874) was Richard's brother and he lived at Longner untill he immigrated to Canada, probably when Richard inherited the estate.

I would be very interested in a picture of that jug to put in with my ancestry information.

It is wonderful that you have it still!

Sandi
