Hi, Since posting I have discovered that my Grandfather was actually born in Lamberhurst, Sussex. His father - also William died about 1889 and is buried at Kilndown, Kent.
I haven't found any record of it yet although I have seen his grave in the Churchyard there. Don't know if this helps you much but good luck anyway, Jonathan B
ps "Tonbridge is spelt with an O not a U"

William Buss was the name of the original immigrant to Concord Mass in the mid 1600s. The name has been in the family a long time. He had a son Nathan and another John I believe. Small world. Tunbridge was the location mentioned in the Concord records, perhaps the parish that includes Tunbridge would have some records although William was probably a Puritan and might not be in the records. William married a Wheeler, I think in England but not certain.

His brother was said to remain in Tunbridge. Our line indicated origin was Dutch but I have not found connection. William was a weaver and later married into a family that developed watermills throughout Mass and Conn. He is buried in Concord Mass. Sorry I do not know about current Busses. My great great grandfather Lester Buss born in 1860s was described as blond and blue eyed. Dutch???
Thanks for your Information. I would love to get this line back to 1600s and before.

Susan

I am curious to find a connection between Kate Buss, survivor of the Titanic disaster and my own antecedents. My late Grandfather and his father were both named William Buss and both men of Kent. Heres hoping someone out there can pass me some info, Jonathan Buss

Hi CW Buss
Thank you for your reply. Since my original post (Dec 2002), I have now made contact with Laura Elsie - your theories were spot on!

Sadly I traced Laura a few months after my grandfather passed away in 2003 so he was never reunited with his "sweet little cousin" that he last saw in 1933 but she is overjoyed to be in contact with her mother's family again, and through my great aunt now has a picture of her mother for the first time in her life!

thanks again for your reply, it's much appreciated :)
Samantha

I'm trying to trace Elsie BUSS, who is the daughter of S. BUSS (father's full first name unknown) and Eleanor BROUGHTON (aka Laura).

I have very little information about Elsie - I think she will have been born in London area (possibly Surrey or Middlesex?). If she is still alive today, she would be between 65 and 80 years old now (her mother was born about 1898). Her mother Eleanor BROUGHTON died when Elsie was about 9 or 10 years old at which time Elsie went to live with her father, S. BUSS. I know nothing of her since then.

Elsie is my grandfather's first cousin - they lost contact after the death of her mother and I would love to be able to find out what happened to her and perhaps arrange a reunion with my 88 year old grandad.

If you have any info, please contact me!

Many thanks,
Sam

Buss born c. 1881 in Northhampton Co. PA. There are many Buss' in the Nazareth area and the Hecktown cemetary seems to be the resting place of choice for the family. I just don't know the connections. The work done by bbusby is most impressive.

Martin Buss of Middlebury MA, later Eastford CT

I have tracked Martin Buss (b1800, MA), husband of Eliza Marble, in the Ashford/Eastford CT censuses for 1840 and 1850. They are also listed in the Marriages of Rutland, MA for December 22, 1822, with Martin listed as being from Middlebury MA (oddly, a Martin Bass of Middleborough is also listed as marrying an Eliza Marble on December 21, 1822 in Massachusetts Marriages 1633-1850). And their non-resident Middleboro church membership is also listed in an 1854 publication.

I suspect the marriage ("int.") was published in each of their hometowns (she in Rutland and he in Middlebury/borough).

My next problem is to find the parents of both Martin and Eliza. There is no shortage of Buss family trees in the old publications, but these two are hiding prior to their move to CT. There is an Eliza Marble of Dracut MA (daughter of David), but it seems she was married to someone else and remained in MA, so this is not Martin's Eliza.

I am descended from Martin and Eliza's son Cyrus, who moved from CT to Jersey City circa-1860.

While they were Eastford CT in 1850 there were also a Benjamin and Joseph Buss living nearby who also hail from MA, so perhaps they are siblings.

Can anybody shed some light on these particular Busses?

She was b. 1740 and had an adult baptism at Pluckley in 1760 aged 19.

Thomas and Elizabeth had five children. Elizabeth b. 1765 married Henry Wood, Richard b. 1766 married Lydia Philpott.
The Elizabeth BUSS in my tree was born in Wrotham c1812 according to census returns.

She might have been the daughter of Joseph BUSS and Ann VENTUM, christened in Plaxtol on 5 Apr 1812. I have not got anywhere looking for a marriage or birthplaces for those two.

My Elizabeth BUSS married George HUNT, a labourer/thatcher in Hadlow in censuses, christened in St Michaels church, East Peckham on 17 Nov 1811, so I don't think she's the person you're looking for.

Have you tried looking at http://www.theweald.org/Akhurst/a00.asp?I=22119080 or http://www.our-families.info/indilist.php?surname=BUSS&f... ?
Hi

I'm trying to track down birth, baptism, death and children of an Elizabeth Buss from Pluckly, Kent, England. She married a Thomas Cackett (also Pluckley) on 9 Dec 1764. As far as I can trace they had 5 children: Elizabeth (1765), Richard (1766), Celia (1771), Thomas (1773) and Daniel (1777).

My lineage goes to her Great Granddaughter, Elizabeth (1842) who is a Grand Aunt of my mother.

Does she appear in your Buss families?
I have researched quite a few descendants of William Buss born early 1600 of Concord Mass as they moved to western Mass, Vermont and New Hampshire. Has anyone taken this line back to England? William apparently was from Turnbridge England which I believe is in the South. Has anyone researched beyond the 1600's, and discovered the origin of the English Buss family???

Hi!

I have been having real trouble tracking down the origins of "my" Elizabeth Buss as well.

According to the 1851 UK census she was born in Wrotham, Kent c1812. She married George Hunt in Wateringbury, Kent on 2 Oct 1836 and they had at least one child in East Peckham, Kent before moving to Hadlow, Kent and were there in the 1841 and 1851 censuses and had at least two more children there. She died before the 1861 census.

Does any of this ring any bells with you?

Thanks!

Therese.
