Bossards in Switzerland

My great-grandfather was Jacob Bossard, who emigrated to Chicago from Switzerland in 1882. His wife was Marie Elizabeth Muller, and their children were Gotfried, Freiderich, Rudolph, Carl, Ida, Johnnie, Lena, and Walter, who was my grandfather. I believe Jacob was born in Zalor in 1850, and his father's name was Morris. That's all I know about them. Does anyone have any more information? Or a tip on how to find it?

I don't know if this is the same Homer Bussard, but I was married to a Homer Bussard in 1966. Prior to our marriage, he was married to a lady in Oregon, I think in Lane county. They had a son named Bill or William. However, in the many years we were married, I don't know of any time he had contact with this son. If you feel this is the same Homer Lee Bussard you are looking for, please get back to me and I will give you more information.

Sincerely

Ruth Gange

I would love to see other known Buzzard photos to compare resemblances...does anyone have any old photos with which I could compare? This young man has unusual, distinct features and does not look like anyone else in our family album. Thanks!

I think this George Bussard (Buzzard) may be the father of my ggg-grandfather, Jacob Bussard. Jacob is listed in the 1840 Washington Co. Census in Clear Springs, MD. All the ages of the children seem to add up. Have you found out anything on this George since your post in 2003? I've read other things which seem to suggest that this George came from Bucks County, PA. Jacob ended up in Madison County, Ohio, and is buried there. He married Susan Wolford in Washington Co. MD in 1836, moved to Ohio in 1841.

Daniel Bussard, Jr. B. 2 Dec 1771 in Frederick Co, Md. was the son of Daniel Bussard (1736-1813) and Sophia Renner Bussard. Daniel, Jr. married 22 Nov 1803 Catharine Knode in Washington Co., Md. After his marriage he moved to Georgetown, Md. and had three children: William, Lewis Augustus and Julia Ann. Daniel died 13 May 1830 and Catharine died 22 Jul 1838. I hope this helps you eliminate one Daniel. All of the above is well documented if you need that data, let me know. I do not know much about the Bedford Co Pa. Bussards', but I know that two of the above Daniel, Sr. children Abraham B. about 1768 and Mary B. 18 Aug 1776, wife of John Exeline (Oechslein) went to Bedford Co..

I am always chasing Bussards and will keep a lookout for your Jacob and Susan Wolford who married 19 Mar 1836 in Washington Co. MD. Note: (This I cannot document... forgot where I got it, but I have Susan born about 1818.)

Thanks for your post! I did not know about Everett. It gives me a little more to go on. Since my last post, I've discovered that my grandfather Jacob and his wife Susan Walford Bussard were married in 1836 in Washington County, Md. I will go back and see if and how your town figures. Someday I'll get over there and do some serious research, but for now it's on hold...

Some don't want to be French because of the French and Indian War. As I understand it, the French instigated war between the settlers and the Indians. Lots of bloodshed and very angry settlers. But the Bussards may have come from the Alsace area, which means that they were German-speaking French and probably came over later, and had no part in the bloodshed... Don't know for sure. But it isn't all bad to be French!

Hi, just saw your post and am interested in helping.
There are several interesting coincidences between your post and my mother's family.
You are no doubt related as my mother's maiden name is Bussard. She originated from PA very close to the MD state line. From the small town of Everett, just off the PA turnpike. Her fathers name was Joseph Andrew Bussard. He was a coal miner. Died in the early 60's. They also claimed to be French in origin. Some controversy over that as at least one of the siblings does not want to be French - too bad. Statistics prove that it is - there were over 150 families in France with that surname and only 20 or so in Germany. England had a few and Spain 1. This was from the European White Pages.
Have been to the southern part of Louisiana - there are supposed to be a lot down there. Not sure about that but I can confirm that there are some.
Hope that helps.

After studying this, I think I'm related to the Daniel Bussard line from Bedford, PA. Would anyone be willing to send me information on the two Daniel Bussards from Bedford? Specifically Daniel Jr. if available. Didn't he marry a Catherine Knode? Please help.

Bussard - France?>Canada?>PA>MD>OH - Madison County

According to family tradition, my line of Bussards were French. They came to Northern America, possibly to Nova Scotia first. My g-grandma said some came through Canada and eventually settled in OH. Some kept going and ended up in Louisiana.

What I'm finding in the Ohio records is this:

Jacob Bussard born in PA abt 1805, place unknown. He married Susan Jane Walford from MD, so he may have lived very close to the PA-MD border. Susan was born about 1822. Jacob may have been married before, or he and Susan were married when she was a mere 13 or 14 years old.

Jacob Bussard---Susan Walford had the following children according to 1850, 60, 70, OH census:

John H,
born 1836 in MD;

Anne (Anna) Elizabeth,
born abt. 1838, MD;

William Thomas,
born 8/31/1839, MD;

Jacob
b. 1/25/1841, OH or MD;

George
born 8/26/1846, OH;

Samuel
b. 4/11/1848, OH;

Mary Jane
b. 3/25/1850, OH;

Ellen
b. abt 1851, OH

Sarah
b. abt 1852, OH;

They settled in Somerford Twp, Madison Co., OH, and many are buried in the Somerford (Summerford) Cemetery. My line is the Samuel Bussard line. Samuel went on to have four
daughters: Ida; Jessie; Louie Florence; and Lillie. Louie Florence was my g-grandma.

There is a possibility that my Bussard line is related to another Bussard line that lived in Clark Co, OH, just a stones throw away from the Madison County Bussards. I would like very much to find a link between the two. That Bussard line had John Bussard, living in S. Charleston, OH in 1850, also from PA.

I'm trying to find out where in PA these Bussards originated. If you have information on this line please contact me!

We're related through the Devin Family. Elizabeth Devin (that was my maiden name, too!) was the daughter of Michael Devin and Michael was the brother of my ancestor, Thomas Devin. Our common ancestor is their father, immigrant Michael Devin who was a French Huegonot from Ireland and married Elizabeth Rice. They settled near Big Bottom/Marietta, Ohio.
Yes, I have since learned Margaret's lst husband was Jacob, but didn't have his date of birth. Do you know date of death? Date Margaret married David Beeler? Guessing circa 1863, based on census info plus Elias' Civil War records. 1850 census gives 10 children for Jacob and Margaret: Catharine, 19; Mary, 17; Eliza, 15; Elizabeth, 14; Margaret, 13; Susan, 9; Nancy, 7; Elias, 6; Daniel 4, and Samuel, 2. I also found the death notice for David Beeler in the Hagerstown Mail. Would be happy to share further information if you want to send your email address.
Coincidentally, the name of Margaret's first husband was Jacob, as well, born in 1806. He and Margaret had two children, Eli (my gg grandfather) and Daniel W., born in 1846. David, your gg grandfather's brother, lived with my gg grandfather in Hagerstown until his death.

Victor helped Joseph and his wife Leonie and family emigrate from switzerland in the 1880's. They settled in Oklahoma during the landrun. I would love to get aquainted with the lost relatives.
Martha

ps..below is a picture of Joseph and his family.

I'm a decendent of David's. Nice story on a Lushton Neb web site- Covered Wagons and Indians, you know.
He lived in Lushton Neb - as did about four more generations - (Most sons were William) - some moved to Metaline Falls WA in the forties.
David's grandfather is Samuel, then Peter, then Daniel, born 1736 in (probably) Alsace Lorraine, Germany at the time, France now. All pretty much stayed in Fredericks County MD. I know Daniel came to America 1749 on same ship as wife, but cannot get any further back than that.
