Thanks for the info. Every little bit helps.

I have Levi M. Buterbaugh married first to Elizabeth Treese in 1866. I have Levi married 2nd to Sarah Jane Long in 1898. There are so many Buterbaughs that it is difficult to keep them straight. I have Amy McGuire as the wife of David A. Buterbaugh, the mother of Levi not his wife.

The 1870 census record shows Levi & Elizabeth with their children Ann, 2 and William age 6/12.

As far as William in prison, perhaps the newspaper archives can shed some light on that issue. I will see what I can dig up.

William Henry Buterbaugh was born 1870, and died January 18, 1942. He was the son of Levi M. Buterbaugh and Amy McGuire Buterbaugh. William would be my great grandfather. I never heard William H. Buterbaugh to be in Western Penitentary although he was said to be a scoundrel. He fathered my grandfather, Charles M. Buterbaugh by Nina Catherine Pearl Buterbaugh....which, was his first cousin. At that time, he dropped out of sight...which could be the time he was said to be in Western Penitentary. I do have a picture of him holding me as a baby. That picture would be from 1935. I will do some research to find out about Ela. I am not sure if this satisfies your question.
Do you know what happened to William Buterbaugh? I have his death on 18 Jun 1942. However, he was married to Eva Etta Goss on 6 Nov 1894 but he is not found with that family in the 1900-1930 census records. A newspaper account in 1897 stays that a William Buterbaugh of Green Twp. was charged by his wife Eva with disertion, he satisfied the court that because of illness he could not keep his wife.

In 1900 William is found with his parents Levi & Sarah and list listed as married. In 1900 Eva Buterbaugh is found working as a servant in Susquehanna Twp., Cambria Co., with her daughter Edna. Eva is listed as a widow.

In 1910 Eva is still in Susquehanna Twp. with two daughters Edna and Ela. Who was the father of Ela? I have not found William H. Buterbaugh in the 1910 census, for sure, Although I did find a William H. Buterbaugh, aged 40 in the Western Penitentiary in Pittsburgh. This william was listed as a merchant.

In 1920 Eva and Ela are found living with Eva's daughter Edna and her husband Jessie Fleming in Susquehanna Twp., Cambria Co., PA. I have not yet found William in the 1920 records.
I'm not sure if you will get this message, it has been a few years since there has been any activity. I am Charlotte Welsh's daughter, Shirley. Catherine Pearl Buterbaugh had a son, Charles Murray Buterbaugh by William. Charles M. and Eva Grace Swank were my maternal grandparents. Charlotte, Charles M., and Catherine, were their children. My mother married Robert H. Welsh. I have lots more extensive information going back beyond Catherine Pearl's time and family. My mother traced this branch of family back to when they landed in Maryland from Germany.

Corp. Percy Buterbaugh, WWI letter

Nebraska City News, Friday, November 9, 1917

LIFE AT CAMP FUNSTON
Percy Buterbaugh Says Life is Fine and All Enjoy Themselves

Superintendent C.M. ALDRICH is in receipt of the following letter from Percy BUTERBAUGH [BUTTERBAUGH], Supply Co., 341, F.A. Mr. Buterbaugh was formerly box foreman at the packing house.

Camp Funston, Kas., Oct. 30, 1917
Dear Friend: - I will write you a few lines to let you know that I have not forgotten you and that we N.C. boys are well and happy. You can see that I have been begging from the Y.M.C.A. They have two Y.M.’s in camp and they furnish all the writing paper and envelopes, pen and ink free, and they are well=patronized every night.
Army life is fine so far. The outdoor life is sure healthy. I have been trying to find a scales to see how much I weigh. One thin I have lost since I have come down here is table manners. You cannot eat here very long and keep them. They give us plenty to eat, food that sticks to the ribs. One thing I noticed we were short on today was sugar. They say there is not any in the camp.
We have one hour for athletics every day and spend half an hour morning and afternoon for gymnasium. They have been giving us lots of double time this cold weather. I dare say that Hans ZERBS wishes that they would leave this out. He is sure doing fine and has not lost any weight that I can see.
Our company has lots of mascots, a goat, a dog and a burro. I do not think much of the burro, he makes too much noise at night. The regiment has a 38-piece band that gives us a lot of nice music. Our Captain is a man from the Lincoln university. He was a teacher there and is a mighty nice fellow.
Well, here is hoping that the packing house business is coming along fine and that there will be lots of business this winter. Wishing you the best of luck I will close for this time.

Note: Corporal Percy Butterbaugh’s portrait and biographical sketch can be found, along with two other Butterbaughs, at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~neotoe/warbook/warbook-index.htm

OBIT John Buterbaugh, 2-1896, Green twp, PA

The Indiana Progress
Indiana, Pennsylvania
February 19, 1896

John Buterbaugh, of Green Township, died last Wednesday, in His 97th year
The county's pioneer and patriarch, Mr. John Buterbaugh, of Green township, died at midnight, Wednesday, of a complication of diseases, aged 96 years, 6 months and 10 days. For several months the deceased suffered from a general decline incident to old age.
In August 1894, when Mr. Buterbaugh celebrated his 95th birthday, the PROGRESS gave a detailed sketch of his life. He was born in Huntington county, August 3, 1799, five months before Washington died. Early in life, in 1819, he came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Buterbaugh, to Green township, and with the aid of the axe he cleared a home for the family in what was then a wilderness. He afterwards cleared a tract for himself where he has lived ever since. The farm is located at Pleasant Valley, a little village in Green township, and is now occupied by his daughter, Mrs. D.P. Reed, where the old gentleman has been making his home. On October 13, 1831, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Learn, daughter of John Learn, another early settler in Green township. 13 children blessed their union, eight of whom are yet living, viz: H.L., Simon, A.N., Mrs. D.P. Reed, Mrs. Franklin Nupp, Mrs. Hezekiah Baker, all residing in Green township, and Andrew, of Barnesboro, Cambria county. After living together happily for 50 years his wife died.
Mr. Buterbaugh is the grandfather of 57 children, great-grandfather of 57 children and great-great-grandfather of 5 children. Early in life he united with the Lutheran church at Cookport and was always found in his pew until the past few years, when declining health prevented his attending.
Mr. Buterbaugh was a man of sterling qualities and exerted a widespread influence for good in his neighborhood. He was always blessed with good health- the result of living a good life- with fixed habits that all admired, and perhaps this explains the cause of the long life which he has lived. He was without doubt the oldest resident of the county and has outlived the time alloted to man.
The funeral services were conducted at his late home on Friday, by Rev. Burrow, pastor of the Methodist Protestant church at Cockport, and a large number of people gathered to show their respect to the memory of the deceased. Interment took place in the Methodist graveyard at Cookport.

I have a large collection of identified antique photos. My collection includes an album bought in Pittsburgh which I call the Buterbaugh/Smeltzer album. It has a carte-de-visite photo taken in Indiana, Indiana Co., Pa., which shows 2 young men and 2 young women. The only identification on the back of the photo is: S. M. Buterbaugh, J. [or P.?] L. Buterbaugh, and R. Eliott. Carte-de-visite photos (the size of calling cards) were popular from ca 1860s to early 1900s.
Roger, I apologize that my posting was so confusing. I have a letter that states my Grandmother Edna June Buterbaugh had a half brother, Charles W. Buterbaugh. He, Charles, in turn had a daughter Charlotte Welsh living in Irwin, PA.. I found Charlotte Welsh in the Social Security index with a birth date of 23 Oct 1916 and death 18 Dec 1994 living in Irwin, PA.

Edna June Buterbaugh's parents are William and Eva Etta (Goss) Buterbaugh. I assumed that William had another wife and child Charles W. Buterbaugh. So I checked the census and found this:

!1910 CENSUS: PA, Allegheny, Braddock Borough, 18 April 1910, SD 23, ED 25, Sheet 4A, Line 27:

~Luther, Joseph L., Head, Male, age 41, Married (1st) 11yrs, born
PA, Parents born PA, Carpenter, House;
Catherine P.(?), Wife, Female, age 32, Married (2nd)
11yrs, Mother of 1 Child, 1 child living, born
PA, Parents born PA;
Buterbaugh, Charles, Step-son, Male, age 15, Single, born PA,
Parents born PA, Truckman, Electric work.
And then:

!1920 CENSUS: PA, Allegheny, North Versalles, precinct 5, 17 January 1920, SD 24, ED 290, Sheet 11B, Line 92:

Buterbaugh, Charles, Head, Male, age 24, Married, born PA,
Parents born PA, Acetylene Welder, Electrical
Work;
Grace, Wife, Female, age 23, Married, born PA,
Parents born PA;
Charlotte, Daughter, Female, age 3 2/12, Single, born
PA.
I do not know if this is the family I am looking for and was looking for help. I hope this helps to clear up my posting. Thanks, Linda Fleming

I have been looking into your question regarding William Buterbaugh and several things don't seem to add up.

First, you say that William H. Buterbaugh and Catherine Pearl ? had a son Charles W. Buterbaugh. And that your Grandmother Eva Etta Goss had a step Brother Charles W. Are these two Charles W. one and the same, or was Eva Etta's step brother Charles W. Goss ?

You also say that William Buterbaugh and Eva Etta Goss had a daughter Edna June and a half brother Charles W.

I am somewhat confused.

Regardless, I find William H. Buterbaugh, b. Feb 1870 living with his father Levi Buterbaugh in the 1900 Census, Green Twp. p. 32, family No. 128. It says that William H was married for 6 years but no wife is listed. I would then assume that she had died. However, there is no children of William listed. I have Edna June born in Jun 1894, she should be listed in this census someplace. Only a sister Bertha, b. Feb 1882 and Levi's grandson Austin Henry, William H.'s nephew, is listed after William.. I cannot find William in any census records after 1900. Do you know where he went. Did he stay in Indiana Co ?

Hi Charlene, I was wondering if you and I are related through my great-grandfather William Buterbaugh who married Eva Etta Goss. I just found out that my grandmother, Edna June Buterbaugh had a half brother Charles W. Buterbaugh and Charles had a daughter Charlotte Welsh. Thanks, Linda Fleming

Charlene:

Thanks for your message. I actually researched that line for a friend to get his two daughters into the DAR. I am going to forward your message to him, and if he is interested he will follow up.

The one thing I really wanted was proof that John Peter Butterbaugh did something to aid the cause of the Revolution or signed an Oath of Allegiance to the American cause. I never could prove that to my satisfaction in establishing the complete Buterbaugh lineage, so I crossed over to the Gailey line and got both girls in on James Gailey. I would love to pursue this line but am now involved in DAR at the State level and have no time right now to research! Good luck.

They are the two sons of Grey Arthur Buterbaugh, Jr. and Shirley Marie (Lyle) Buterbaugh. Grey's Parent's were Nell (McCarthy) Buterbaugh and Grey Arthur Buterbaugh, Sr. Grey Sr. was originally from the Windber/Johnstown area, but relocated to Clymer, PA and raised his family there. I don't have more specific information with me now, but if anyone knows which "line" we are from, please post a reply or email me. Thank you.

Toby L.
