Thanks for writing. I have done a lot of research on this, and it is sad all the misinformation. Some born of ignorance, some from shame and bigotry, some people just trying to survive in peace.
It is biologically very difficult to have blue eyes, curly//wavy hair, and have (heavy beard) male body hair and be of any Indian heritege. Most people told to have been Cherokee are not. Even in SC or NC. If you Google "Cherokee photo" you will see your family looks nothing like the Cherokee.
The Melungeon or Black Irish or other "tri-racial" of NC are in fact genetic descendants of the Moors or Imazighen of North Africa by the way of Spain or Portugal. The phenotype is strong evidence and the DNA anaylysis is conclusive. Google the non-Arab people Morocco or Tunisia photos and you will see the family resemblance. Blue eyes, wavy hair, dark olive skin, and general appearance. I have written an essay on this topic and focused on non-English female names that appear often in NC , E TN, and SW VA. One of the place these people migrated to wash Highland Co, OH. Most of the claims of being Indian was to avoid the Jim Crow laws from being thought Black in the early 1900s. I would be happy to share more upon request.
I would love to have more details on the Color status in the Census; and any stories of being discriminated against based on race. Good luck.

Hi there, I would love to see what you have come up with. I believe I am a descendant of the Rickman's of Virginia and Ohio and am trying to find out as much about them as I can. Their classification seems to be convoluted - Mulattos, Melungeon's, Sioux Indian, etc. Please share!!!

I am sure I can answer your questions. Yes, they are called Black Irish, Melungeon, Lumbee Indian, other NC Indians, Guinea of WV, Brass Feet, etc. I have that ancestry. A doctor/historian and I have spent the last year researching and writing about them. We just finished an article to be published. Briefly, they are descendants of N. African Berber, a pure Ancient race of people. You give most of the clues. Black hair, often wavy/curly, blue-green eyes with a 3-dimentional appearance. Often with an olive/pale skin and high cheekbones. They came ashore in NC / SC about 1600 and moved North into VA/TN and KY. Later into Highland Co. OH. I have photo of people with that phenotype from Morocco and Mexico. They are not generally Indian or Negro as neither have the blue eyes or blonde hair.

Daniel Butler (Rickman) VA abt 1792 m Lovina NC ; "Black Irish" or "Melungeon"?

We were told we were Black Irish, Black Foot, Cherokee, &Choctaw. 1860-1880 Iowa Census show Mulatto, 1850 Illinois Census show Black, 1840 Illinois Census show "People of Color". Children were born in Jasper Co, Illinois, and Highland County, Ohio. Daniel was known as Rickman later but earlier on as Daniel Butler. The family was driven out of Iowa at one point do to color. Superior court docs show Daniel Rickman, alias Daniel Butler with two spellings. Some family members tell stories of the Trail of tears and a member perishing in a brush fire on the way. Much speculation but little other than oral family stories. They were referred to as having ichy feet. Stories of dark hair, blue eyes which still dominate the family. Any one with any information showing Daniel and Lovina/Lavina/Levina (depending on the census) back in Ohio or Virigina/North Carolina in the late 1700's early 1800's please contact me. We don't care what we are, just who we are! Thank you Pamela

Hi there, I have come across many citings in texts about the Rickman's being Ochaneechee Saponi Tutelo. What have you encountered about the Rickman's in your Moorish studies? I have heard of this and am particularly curious of those Moors that came to N. America. My Rickman ancestors are descendant from of Thomas Rickman in the tax records late 1600's???
His Son was John Rickman (1719-1784)
5 children William (1742), John (1750), James (1768), Fanny (1770) and
Peter Rickman (1740-1800) and wife Rebecca Gowans
|
John Rickman (1780)- Elizabeth
John's siblings (Thomas, William, Peter, Isaac, Abner, Susannah)
William Rickman (1813-1889)- Nancy J. (1818-1875)
15 children one of which is
Uriah John Luefel Rickman (1834-1893)m. Mary Ann Kendall (1842-1920)
17 children and so on and so on...
starts Virginia, then to Highland Ohio....
reference in a book by a german commissioned to study these people: authors are the Haithcox' who are native themselves
http://www.common-place.org/vol-05/no-01/heinegg-hoff/index....

I think that Bettie died sometime between June 6, 1900 and November 24, 1903 (which was the date that William R. Butler remarried). I found William's grave at Green Hills Cemetery (in Greensboro, NC) but did not find Bettie's grave. William's death was recorded as July 29, 1939.
Just found your post. Would your Donie Martha Butler be Martha Butler born about 1917? I don't have any information on her. I would appreciate any information that you have and am interested in the picture, too. Would your mom know anything about her brother Henry? I can't find anything on him after about 1912. Thanks.

Hi Roxanna,

I have recently gotten back to my family research and found some replies to inquiries I had posted online… of which one is from you.

I am looking for my Butler family who lived in St Louis MO around 1940 and prior, before moving the family to California.

Henry James Butler, my G Grandfather, Ervin Lee Butler, his son and my Grandfather. I do not have information on Henry’s wife. Ervin Lee was married to Thelma Maxine Elders, and her parents were Theodore Raymond Elders and Pearline “Pearl” Mae Hackley. Ervin Lee has two sisters… Kate and Alice.

I hope to hear back from you and am hoping this is related to your family too.

Tanya

hello Janice! Okay, I have added Zachariah Butler to Anna Bulter Fitzgarrald as her father. Too many connections over the past 20 yrs! But Sarah BOWE is listed as her MO. B1738 D 1759...Anna was born after that, so? Do you have Anna's birth in 1700 VA, Hanover, St Paul's Parish? I do know landownership of Zach and George Fitzgarrald we connect. ?Possible gift from father inlaw Zach? But Anna is not listed in Zach's will, I thought I read it also. Any new news appeciated. Subscriped to Ancesrty now Family Tree is "Dusen-Westra". So nice to see your posts, again =] Vic

Edwin's mother's maiden name was Gearing so it probably isn't your family. I did a search on Mary Gilbert and lots of hits came back for Ontario and Quebec but the ones I checked didn't indicate Mary as a First Nation person. There are several Mary Gilberts in Quebec which would make sense because of its proximity to Maine. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Good luck with your search. My Butlers are keeping their past a very good secret! It can be frustrating.

Trying to trace both ancestors and descendants off Phillip Butler. He was a stone Mason by trade
He was born in Ireland but I don't know where.

I have info from his son Micheal Butler onwards but would like to try and find the Irish ancestors.
Phillips son Micheal came over to England and was living in St Pancras Middlesex in 1841. Like his father he was a Stone Mason. Micheal left Middlesex and moved to North Wales to help to build the Bridge form Bangor over to Anglesey. Micheal married a Welsh girl Ellen Hughes
I have the info on the descendents but not the ancestors. any help in tracing back to who phillip married or where in Ireland he came from would be greatly appreciated.

James Butler Jr married Margaret Manlove.
They had a son, Manlove born 1809 Scott Co.,KY that married
Sally Payne then he must have married Sallie Mcgannon.

John Thomas Butler born 1807 md Julian Williams and then
Julia Brooks. John Thos and Julian Williams had son Manlove Giles Butler born 1828. He married Elizabeth Draper and then
Camilla Marilda Banks.

Then on down the line: David Williams Butler born 1831 brother to Manlove Giles had a son Manlove Newton Butler born 1854 married to Emma Luella Messner.

Then Emily Butler dt of John( James' brother) married
Theodorus Neal and there was a Manlove Butler Neal in Boone Co.,IN.Thankfully he named his son Marvin. So you can see the name Manlove was used for descendants and also the Giles name was given to descendants also.
Hi Lana,
While reviewing your postings I noticed one from another researcher asking for information on Polly Butler born 1804 whose father was James Butler and mother was Unis Kinsley. If you would, could you please send me information on this family also.

Thanks, Marilyn mwiegand075@gmail.com
