G.Q. Buxton, DOB 10/3/1837, Maine > California

G. Q. Buxton

He is the son of E. G. and Lydia (Chase) Buxton, and was born October 3, 1837, at North Yarmouth, Cumberland county, Maine. His father was engaged in mercantile pursuits at North Yarmouth until 1859, and followed hotel and livery business to the time of his death, in January, 1880. His mother is still living at the same place. Our subject was educated in the schools and academy at Yarmouth. He early manifested a desire to become a sailor; and from the time he was sixteen till twenty-one he went cruising up the Atlantic coast every summer. In 1859 he came to California, via Panama, arriving in San Francisco in April, and proceeded directly to Michigan Bluff, where he mined for four years with good success. He then invested a great deal in bed-rock tunneling at Turkey hill, Placer county, which never proved remunerative until recently. In 1864 he opened a mercantile establishment at Michigan Bluff, and continued it four years, when he went to Cisco, and took charge of a store for two years. In 1870 he visited his home in the east, and remained with his parents a year, when he came to Randolph, Sierra county, and bought the farm and hotel property of H. Northup, consisting of 160 acres of land and the Randolph hotel, both of which he has owned and managed since. In 1876 he bought the stage line running between Truckee and Eureka Mills, which he still operates. He was married May 3, 1865, to Miss Lucetta Salsig of Auburn, Placer county. She was born in St. Joseph county, Michigan, January 23, 1848, and came to California with her parents in 1852. The children of Mr. And Mrs. Buxton are Frank L., born January 6, 1867; infant, born June 30, 1872, died three days later; George E., born June 19, 1875.

Illustrated History of Plumas, Lassen & Sierra Counties, with California from 1513 to 1850. - Fariss and Smith, San Francisco, 1882. p 273

Buxton - Burnell connection

Hi All. Here is my brick wall.

I am searching for a connection between the Buxton and Burnell families, in England, during the early 1800's. I know that it existed, but have been unable to discover who married who, or when. Here's my proof:-

In the 1891 census for St. Botolph-without-Aldgate, London; the 3 Burnell children:- Edward (b.1880), Annie (b.1883), and Lillian (b.1888) are staying at the home of John Buxton (b.1833) and his wife Harriet ??? (b.1838) while their parents Henry James Burnell (b.1859) and Caroline (nee Edwards) (b.1863) are traveling in Africa. The children are listed as a Grand-Nephew & 2 Grand-Nieces to John Buxton.

In addition, Arthur Buxton (b.1872) (youngest son of John Buxton) is a visiting Cousin to the Caroline Burnell (b.1863) family in the 1901 census.

My family oral history confirmed that the Buxton and Burnell families are related, but the folk who might have known the details died long ago.

Can anyone help?
Melinda, a Choctaw Indian, married Frank Buxton ( I assume he was Black) when Ranse was approximately two years old. I was told that Melinda and Frank were from Alabama. I do not know what city in Alabama. Anyway, Ranse was the product of an American Indian and a White plantation owner. Ranse married Lydia or Olydia Woodward. I am looking for any information I can find on her also. Ranse and Lydia moved to Mississippi (Clarke County or Jasper County, Mississippi). They either lived in a small town named Shubuta or Vossburg. I found some land records from the courthouse in Quitman, Mississippi where Ranse and Lydia did own land in the early 1900's to 1930's in Shubuta. That is as far as I got. I am hoping there is someone somewhere who can help me in my search. Thanks in advance.
Buxtons of Meare, Somerset Co., England/1800s

I have traced my family ancestry on my father's side back to Mary Buxton, who married Jacob Smith in Meare in 1826. I know that Jacob Smith's parents were Mary Whitnel and Robert Smith. I am now trying to trace Mary Buxton's ancestors.

I found several prior Buxtons (prior to 1826) in Meare. For example, in the Meare Parish Registers of the Church of England, I found John Buxton who married Mary Rowley in 1765, James Buxton who married Maria Rood in 1805, and a Mary Buxton who was born to John and Mary Buxton in 1776, and what was almost certainly her brother, John Rowley Buxton, who was born in 1774. The problem is, none of these seem to be exactly the person I am seeking as the wife of Jacob Smith. I suspect that John Buxton and Mary Rowley Buxton were her grandparents, and that her father was John Rowley Buxton, but I have not found a link to prove it.

I would be interested in any information from anyone who could shed some light on these people.

Thanks!

Searching For Parents: Paul Robert BUXTON

My name is Anna. I was adopted when I was 5 years old. I will be 22 next month, and I'm trying to find out a little information about my Biological family.
I was born Feb. 2, 1979 in Newburgh, Maine to PAUL ROBERT BUXTON, and DOREEN MARIE LANE BUXTON. I know that Doreen was 22 at the time, and Paul was 25. I also have an address of Route #1, Box 129, Hampden Highland, ME 04445 in 1979.
I was adopted when I was 5 years old. My adoptive mother said she knows I lived with relatives for a while, and then was in foster care. She also said I had an older brother who was also up for adoption.
If anyone possibly has any information about my biological parents, or can give me any ideas about the lineage of the "Buxton" name, I would be VERY appreciative.
Thank you, Anna

I appear to have reached a dead end and am looking for some advice on where to go.

My grt grandfather was Frederick Buxton (?1850 ish), married to Alice Cooper. I have found his name on the 1881 census as living in Leeds, born in Chapeltown , not sure if Leeds or Sheffield. He was a civil engineer.
I think his father was Samuel, but no name for mother.
He had two children - Richard and Wilfred, I have their birth certificates with his name. Richard was married to a Sara Wood and had two children - Fred and Jack . I have information about Wilfred as he was my grandfather.
I can't find him on any other census's , 1901 his wife was a widow.
Any advice on where to go to find out more about Frederick would be appreciated

I am the Stamford town coordinator for the Fairfield County Connecticut USGENWEB Project website. Our goal is to help people who are researching their ancestors who came from Fairfield County. My focus is specifically on Stamford. Does anyone have a website with genealogical data for the family of Clement Buxton, one of the original settlers of Stamford? Preferably, this genealogy should include ALL the children and spouses (and inlaws, where known) for at least three generations, but the more the better. We would like to be able to link our site to yours if you agree. Or if you don't have a website, can you send a gedcom or text file? Thank you on behalf of the USGENWEB Project, generously hosted by Rootsweb. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctfairfi/

Ranse BUXTON -- AL > MS

I would like to know if there is anyone out there that has information on my BUXTON family. My great-grandfaher was named Ranse Buxton from Alabama and lived most of his adult life in Jasper or Clarke County, Mississippi. In my previous message I had very little information on him. I have since gathered more information on him and his parents (my great-great grandfather and mother). His mother was named Melinda Woodward and his father was named Frank Buxton. I am told that when Melinda married Frank, Ranse was already two years old. Anyway, Ranse was the son of a White plantation owner (name unknown) and a Choctaw Indian woman (Melinda). Therefore Ranse was half White and half Indian. He married someone by the name of Olidia or Lidia (maiden name unknown). She was full Creek Indian. She was raised on a reservation in the Shubuta, MS area. Ranse had around ten children, one of which was my grandfather, Foster Buxton, who married a woman by the name of Viola Bounds (also Creek Indian and my grandmother). She was raised on a plantation in Sandersville, Mississippi. If anyone could help me with any information on either the Buxton or the Woodward family, I would be very appreciative. You can e-mail me at the address below. Thank you!

mboatner@uno.edu
