Joan

Many thanks for taking the trouble to give me the leads on Thomas Bye's 'brush with the law'. As you probably saw from my correspondence, I was fairly sure that, if he went to Australia,it must have been for a very short period.
I think the 'law' must have taken pity on his situation which must have caused some humour at the time.

Thanks again & best wishes with your research.

Mick Bye

Hi,
Jessie Bye (born 1860's) is my father's grandmother and the older sister of Charles Alexander Bye (born 1881) and John William Bye (born 1877). Their parents were Richard and Isabelle Bye. Do you know if I can access the children's registers of state wards 1850-1893 through ancestry.com?
Thanks for this info.
Anna Frances BYE obit, july 1921, NJ

The body of Mrs. Anna Frances BYE, sixty-eight years old, who died here a few days ago, was taken to Somerville, where funeral services were held and interment was in the new cemetery there. Mrs. Bye died, after a long illness, from a complication of diseases. She was a native of Somerville and the widow of Samuel Bye. She was the daughter of John Van Middlesworth. There are two children, Charles and Miss Emily Bye of Plainfield.

This obit was taken from a New Jersey newspaper dated Saturday, July 16, 1921. I estimate her date of death to be July 14, 1921.

Hello again Mick:

I'd like to contact you off-board if that is possible so that I can send you a photocopy of CHARLES BYE's Birth Certificate (Linton, Balsham, Cambs.) 28 December 1854. as well as one of the entry for his marriage (Registry Office, Mansfield) 30 December 1882.

Could you contact me off-board at

kuchena at gmaildotcom

so we can compare and check notes before publicly posting anything further on-line?

The 1932 Mansfield entry that you have appears to be correct. The graveyard at St Michael's and
and All Angels parish church in South Normanton has the following headstone on the family grave:

Sacred to the memory of ERNEST beloved husband of ANNIE CLEMENTS who died May 18 1917 aged 31 years God moves in a mysterious way also CHARLES beloved husband of ELIZABETH CLEMENTS who died Nov 19th 1932 aged 77 years. At rest. Also ELIABETH wife of CHARLES CLEMENTS who died Nov 15th 1940 aged 78 years. Re-united.

I do have some of the information that you posted in your last message but would like to look at my own notes
amend where necessary before I send you a copy.

Vic

Vic

Many thanks for your e-mail, very interesting!

I was aware of Charles Bye from the 1861 and 1871 census but not aware that he became Charles Clements in the subsequent census. Thank you for that.

Why Clements and why was he living with the Clayton (Claydon) family in 1861 and 1871?

It would certainly appear that Charles was not a son of Thomas & Hannah and he never actually lived with them on a census.

As you say, Charles was born just after Thomas was convicted of sheep stealing (1853) and sentenced to 10 years overseas. I have a copy of the newspaper article giving details of Thomas's arrest which is both interesting and amusing (not for Thomas!) Unfortunately, at this moment, I can't lay my hands on it but when I do (and if you don't already have it) I will send you a copy or transcript.

If possible, would you be able to send me a copy or transcript of Charles Clements marriage certificate, please? Incidentally, I have looked for a death for him - is it the one in 1932 in Mansfield Reg Dist?

Hannah Gilbey was indeed the wife of Thomas Bye. They were married on 20th November 1852 in Linton, Cambs and probably had 3 daughters:- Eleanor (Ellen), Isabel(la), and Florence Eliza Bye.

Eleanor Bye was baptised 18th Feb 1853. She married John Larman on 3rd Sept 1876 in St Paul, Islington and had 1 daughter Florence Isabel Larman (aged 3 in 1881 born in Enfield Highway.
Eleanor (Ellen) unfortunately died in J1881 in Edmonton Reg Dist (aged 28).

Isabel(la) Bye was born 16th Nov 1858 in Hackney/Clapton, London. Baptised 19th Dec 1858 in Hackney.
She married Henry Albert Vernum on 28th Nov 1878 in St Leonard's, Shoreditch and had 1 son George Albert Vernum - born 1880 in Enfield Highway. Unfortunately, Isabel(la) also died young (in S1881 in Edmonton Reg Dist aged 22).

Florence Eliza Bye (birth registered in M1860 in Hackney Reg Dist). Baptised 10th March 1861 in West Hackney. Again, unfortunately, her death is registered in D1861 and she is buried in Abney Park, Stoke Newington.

So, from this, you can see that if Thomas served any of his sentence, it certainly wasn't 10 years. I wonder if there is more to find. Did he appeal? Did he get a reprieve?

In the 1861 census Thomas was living at 12 Brook Street, Hackney as a 28 year old gardener.
In 1871 he was a licenced victualler at the White Lion, Old Road, Enfield Highway. His death was registered in D1880 (aged 49) in Edmonton Reg Dist.

His wife Hannah then appears to have taken over the White Lion and is there in 1881 (aged 52) and 1890 (PO Directory). Hannah's death is registered in S1890 in Edmonton Reg Dist (aged 63).

Well, that's a brief synopsis of Thomas & Hannah. I can take Thomas Bye's line back quite a few more generations if you would like.
Otherwise, I would be interested in anything extra you can add and will be happy to try to help further.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

Mick Bye
Mike Bye mentions having done a one name study of the Bye surname, including the Bye's of Cambridgeshire.

Mike:
Have you come across a CHARLES BYE, born about 1854, in Balsham, Cambs.?

His birth certificate does not name his father or his father's occupation; his mother is given as being Hannah BYE formerly GILBY. The informant was the mother of Hannah Bye, of Balsham, who signed by making a mark.

In the 1861 and 1871 census returns Charles is boarding with the CLAYTON family, but then disappears from the area, He re-appears in the 1881 census for South Normanton, Derbyshire, using the name CHARLES CLEMENTS. He married in the same year giving personal details appropriate to Charles Bye. On reaching retirement age, he obtained a birth certificate in the name of Charles Bye as proof of entitlement by age. (This last fact was given to me a few months ago by a relative who knew Charles' real surname to be BYE).

Hannah BYE's (GILBEY's) actual husband may have been a Thomas Bye. Thomas had been found guilty of sheep stealing in 1853 and sentenced to be transported. He was probably still in prison when my Charles Bye was conceived, hence the omission of the father's name from the birth certificate, Charles' failure to live with his real family in his early years, and his eventual adoption of another name - possibly similar to that of his real father - suggests that there may have been a "domestic difference" between husband Thomas and wife Hannah.
Mike, do you have any of these folk in your records?

Vic Brocklehurst - Great grandson of CB/CC

Hi Amanda

Just seen your message re Bye in Yorkshire/Lancashire. Have you made any progress since posting the message in October 2010 ?

If not, and you would like some help, I can almost certainly take your line back further.

My name is Mick Bye and I am currently in Hampshire but my Bye ancestry is from Cambridgeshire. I have been virtually doing a one name study of Bye for nearly 30 years on and off and will be only too pleased to try to help - if required.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Mick Bye

Thomas Young BYE is my husband's grandfather. He was born in England abt 1872. He married in JUNE 1894 in Union county, New Jersey. He married Margaret Donnell (O'Donnell). They had a son, Donald, born 1901. I believe they lived in NJ until his death. According to Census records, Thomas died between 1920 and 1930.
I cannot locate his date of death.
A cousin of mine is looking for the death of a relative (not on our side of the family) who emigrated to Adelaide. Her (married) name was Emily Bye and she was married to Charles Bye. Emily was born in England in 1900 and they emigrated in 1953. Do you have any connections with Adelaide? - but we don't know whether they lived in another part of Australia, or where they died.

Any help would be very much appreciated.
Looking for BYE family surname, Yorkshire and lancashire

Hi All

I am searching for further information for the surname BYE. My surname is senior and My Gran is Veronica bye whose father was Charles Frederick Bye and mother was Miriam Shaw.
Veronica Bye (My Gran) Is one of at least eight children, names are Dereck, Anne, Carol, Thomas H, Moyra J(passed away about 200), Norman C, Susan J, and peter Bye (who died young in 1979 aged just 19).

Charles F Bye was the son of Joseph Bye born and ? Walker.

I know from Charles F Bye and Miriam shaw’s marriage certificate 19/11/1938, Miriam’s father, Reggie Shaw was listed as deceased at this point.

So… I have come to the end of the line for the moment; I cannot seem to find any more information on Joseph Bye (my great-great granddad) or about my great-great grandmother with the surname Walker.

It seems that even though My great granddad Charles F Bye, who was a great character and even looked after my Dad and uncle for a number of years, told stories of the war, However I cannot seem to find anything with any Army relations.

I fear I have Babbled too much and hope I have not caused too much confusion, any further information would very much be appreciated as I seem to be cut of from the Yorkshire roots, and My dad moved to Rochdale with his mum in the 70’s and after my Auntie Moyra and My Great Granddad Charles passed away, there has not been much interaction with the Bye’s of York.
Would I be asking too much if, again, I requested copies from your book? See my old orginal query :

....." I am attempting to find more information on my Paxton family of England connected to my Howell family. In the Notes of a Howell family History, there is reference made to the book by Arthur Edwin Bye "History of the Bye Family and Some Allied Families" 1956. Supposedly on pages: 408-12; 417, 426-28 are references/information about the Paxtons. If someone has access to this book, I would appreciate copies of the title page and those mentioned above - sending attachment via e-mail off site would work for me. While, as the book says, this does not prove that Frances Paxton, wife of Edward Howell, comes from this family, it is at least something to work with which is more than I have had for several years... Thank you."
=========================================================
I never did receive any copies and I do not need to purchase the book even if I had money, since I do not have Bye ancestors, or at least I do not think so, none have shown up all these years of researching. But then I do not know as yet why Bye family would have reference to Paxton family since I have never seen the Bye Book.

Thanks for your help - much appreciated. I looked to see if book was on internet, but no luck or at least no full free preview, only snippets if anything.

Hi Shanan,
I, too, am a descendent of Thomas Bye and Margaret Davis. I do have a copy of "History of the Bye Family". My grandmother bought a copy when it was printed in 1956. I bought another copy a few years ago through a company in Maryland, which was in the business of reprinting genealogy books which were out of print (Higginson Books, if I remember correctly). I do know that Arthur E. Bye used his father's notes plus his own research in compiling the book.
Regards,
Terry

Rumour is that my grandfather's family came over on a boat from Norway and their last name was actually not Bye but when they came over they shorten it to Bye. I have 2 brothers and one sister their names are Christopher Robert Bye, Lori Denise Bye, Leslie Anne Bye(me) and Jeffery Darren Bye I am really interested in knowing my ancesters.

Hi Nathara,

I am researching the same line as you but I have Rebecca BYE's birth date as 1-8-1833 and baptism 6-10-1833. Everything else looks like a match. I am willing to exchange information.

Francesca
flfl@bigpond.net.au
I'm so glad to hear from you. I actually found your name on an obituary and wrote a letter to you that some how never got mailed. You are cousins with my husband Terry McCutchen. He is the grandson of Asta Amundsen Bye and son of Jean Althea Woodward. We live in Tualatin, Oregon. I don't have information on the Norway roots of the family but I do have some information once they came to America. Please send a direct e-mail to kmccut@yahoo.com or call 503-612-9451. We'd love to compare information. Did you know Asta? She is buried here in Portland with her last husband Henry Olin.

Kathy

I just joined ancestory.com. My grandfather was Thomas Arni Bye, brother of Asta. I guess we are cousins. My name is Bruce Bye and I live in Beaverton, Oregon. I am trying to figure out where Sofus lived in Norway. I heard they changed their name fro Mosby (not sure) to Bye. I think there is a large farm with the Mosby name in Norway. Do you know anything about Vera, or Wilbur, Asta's other brother and sister? Do you know anything about Betsy?
