Hi I am deperately seeking info on the marriage of John Byrne to Mary Alpin. I found matching records on another site that both these people married in the same year, 1885, in Rathdrum but I can't find any more details. I am trying to find the marriage cert so I can see if I can get John Byrne's parents names. I know Mary Alpin's background but it is the Byrne side of things that is proving more difficult.

Any more info would be of great help. Thanks

PETER BYRNE AUSTRALIA & MAYBE BRITISH ISLES

I have, for the best part of 25 years, been looking for information about my Great, Great, Grandfather, PETER BYRNE, As best I can ascertain he was born sometime between 1800 (I think a bit early) and early 1820's as his first son was born in 1837/8. There are two Peter Byrne's born in Dunlavin, Wicklow, Ireland in 1817 & 1820 (not related)as recorded on Family/Search.org LDS' but I have no proof of connection to me. From my research I have not been able to ascertain if Peter Byrne was born in Australia as to date I have not found a BDM/Christening record that states he was born in Australian. I have never been able to find a marriage certificate for him either but the BDM certificates for his three sons Francis, Gregory, and Patrick (My Great Grandfather)have in the majority of cases have their mother's name as Sarah Whybrow the daughter of a convict (transported in 1824)who came to Australia with her mother and siblings in 1828. The family was in the Glendon, Cessnock, Maitland area of New South Wales in the period 1837 - 1842 as this is the period in which the three boys were born and also Peter purchased property at Wollombi NSW in 1839. I am led to believe that Peter may have died in 1848 as on Sarah's re-marriage certificate in 1865 there is reference to this year. I would be most grateful if anyone could assist me in finding out information on my PETER BYRNE or following on from this post if anyone may be more conversant than me in the knocking down of "brick walls". I would be again grateful for any leads someone my set me on to solve this ongoing probem. Thank you in anticipation of some help, John

One story said He died of Heart attack.
Another story from his daughter Elizabeth is that he was found dead next to a railroad track in Chicago, ILL. He apparently had been robbed.

Edward John died in Chicago ILL, June 11, 1942.
Funeral Card verifying this date is in possession of Grandson Joseph.
He was buried in the Holy Sepulcher cemetery, 6001 W. 111th street & Central in Worth, IL, Grave #23, Block 6, section 14, which Is in the corner of 111th St and Ridgeland avenue, actually in the
Corner next to Ridgeland Avenue.
If anyone has the same or similar informtion for their relative, please reply.

Re: Byrnes Ireland Co Carlow

Looking for information on the Byrnes and Keegan families of Carlow Ireland that settled in Illinois, near St. Louis, MO.

John Patrick Byrnes, was born about 1829 in Ireland.

John’s Naturalization papers show he emigrated from Dublin, Ireland and arrived in the USA at Baltimore, Maryland on 04 June 1847.

In John’s initial application for citizenship on 18 October 1852, he stated he had been a resident of Madison County, Illinois since 1848. John became a U.S. citizen on 10 September 1856.

John married Jane Keegan sometime in the late 1850’s. They made their home in Madison County, mostly near Venice, Illinois, until John’s death in 1872.

So far, I have been unable to find any documentary evidence related to the date or location of John and Jane’s marriage.

The 1870 U.S. Federal Census indicates that John and Jane lived near Collinsville, IL. St. Peter & Paul Parish in Collinsville, IL, has marriage and baptismal records that date back to 1860 but a search of their records does not show any useful information. In addition, a search of marriage documents from the Belleville (Illinois) Diocese, for Parish sites near Collinsville, was not useful.

Neither St. Mark’s (Venice, Illinois) or St. Elizabeth (Mitchell, Illinois) were in existence prior to the early 1870’s. There were no other Catholic churches in that close area to Venice, except in St. Louis, across the Mississippi. I have not yet conducted a thorough search of the St. Louis Diocese marriage and baptismal documents of that era.
Of course, there always exists the possibility the relationship was common-law.
We know from family records that, Anna, the first child of Jane and John Byrnes was born on 03 September 1863, in Illinois.

According to the 1900 U.S. Federal Census, Jane Keegan arrived in the USA, from Ireland, in 1852. Various documents indicate Jane was probably born in 1842. We do not know where her home was in Ireland.

John died 04 March, 1872 at the age of 42. He was buried in North St. Louis, Missouri in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery Jane died on 29 July 1903 and is buried in the same Calvary cemetery lot with her husband, John.

Thomas E. Byrnes (a well-to-do farmer and construction contractor for several of the cities in Illinois near St. Louis.) purchased the Calvary cemetery lots where Jane and John are buried. Both Thomas, and his wife Elizabeth Keegan, are buried in the same plot. The cemetery plot is a large one, large enough for as many as eight burials.

The monument installed on the Byrnes cemetery plot is very badly weathered but the readable portion of the inscription states the burial lot was for his wife and children, as well as himself. The monument indicates Thomas was born in 1828 in Carlow, Ireland.

Thomas Byrnes, of Venice, died on 13 January 1873, about 10 months after John Byrnes. Of the six people buried in the Byrnes family cemetery plot in St. Louis Calvary Cemetery, John was the first to die. So Thomas would have been important in determining to have John buried in the plot.

Elizabeth’s surname was Keegan when she married Thomas, the same as Jane’s maiden name. However, we do not know if the marriage to Tom was Elizabeth’s first marriage.

In addition, we do not know how, or if, Jane was related to Elizabeth. I surmise she was closely related.

The available records concerning Elizabeth Keegan Byrnes’ birth year indicate it could be anywhere ranging from 1826 to 1833. I mentioned earlier that Jane Keegan was most likely born in 1842. Therefore, Elizabeth Keegan Byrnes could have been 9 - 16 years older than Jane Keegan Byrnes.

Also, buried in the same Calvary cemetery plot, is Michael Devaney, and his wife, Mary Ellen Byrnes Devaney. Mary Ellen was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth.

Michael Devaney was the older brother of Martin Devaney. Martin was the common-law husband of Anna Byrnes, daughter of Jane Keegan Byrnes and John Byrnes. Martin is also buried in the St. Louis Calvary Catholic cemetery, but in another section.
We do not know the relationship between Thomas and John. Of course, they have the same surname but we do not know what the relationship was that caused them both to be buried in the Byrnes family cemetery plot? Certainly, there is the possibility that John was buried in the Calvary cemetery plot because of a relationship between Jane Keegan Byrnes and Elizabeth, Tom’s wife.

The small age difference between John and Thomas of only about one (1) year rules out any chance of the relationship between them being that of a father & son. However, there is certainly the possibility that Thomas and John were brothers, or cousins. In passing, we note that Thomas & Elizabeth’s second child, a boy (born 1864), was named John.

See http://automatedgenealogy.com/census52/View.jsp?id=10063&amp...

This census also shows a family of Barney & Elizabeth Byrnes and children, and James & Ellen Byrnes and children. I'm not seeing an older Owen who would be Patrick's brother or father, though, so he might have lived outside Lanark county?

Hi all,

My 2nd Great Grandfather was John Byrne b. 1845 in Edina, Knox Co., Missouri USA. I have a marriage record for John documenting his parents as John Byrne and Bridget Cusack. Information I have (but not proof) is that John Byrne, the father, was born about 1820 in County Wicklow to James Byrne b. 1790 in Ireland and Mary Nowlan b. 1792 in Ireland.

John Byrne and wife Bridget Cusack apparently came to the US in about 1841 and were married about 1843. They were closely connected to the Kavanaughs. I have information that there is a privately published book about John Byrne and Bridget Cusack by an author named Kavanaugh who lives/lived in Atlanta, GA that I am attempting to track down.

If anyone can point me to the author or the book or has any other documentation of John Byrne/Bridgett Cusack and James Byrne/Mary Nowlan, I would greatly appreciate it and give credit in my records.

Staley Mims
Portland, OR

I recall and will find again that a Byrne was transported in the early 1800's on the Aurora and another around the same time. One was for taking part in the rebellion and one for thievery . will try to do more research. I am interested as my boss John Rentsch is an Austraiian. Jack in California.

Unfotunately I am unable to provide any further information for you. However, I too am a descendant of Joseph Carberry & Bridget Gerraghty and am always interested in hearing more about our Irish ancestors. Monaro Pioneers & the Carberry booklet have been invaluable. Would love to compare family history with you. I can be contacted directly vinsue2@bigpond.com.

Hi there, Just read your message and am quite amazed at your discoveries. I am from the Hugh Vesty Byrne descendants in Australia and and have till recently been researching the Carberry side if my family history. Nicholas Carberry was the first to arrive here in 1812, married Bridget Gerraghty and his son Joseph married Rosanna Monica Byrne. She was the Daughter of Anne Byrne who was born on route to Australia on the Ship The Tellicherry to parents Hugh Vesty Byrne and Sarah Dwyer. Here's a link to some info about this countries links to the Infamous Wicklow Five. Would love to here from you regarding any other info you may have.
Cheers and Thanks again.
http://www.monaropioneers.com/byrne-w.htm

I found several errors in my previous post in the chain and have corrected them below. I would love to hear commentary!

Many of you have both seen the record of Peter Byrne and Ann Kelly Byrne coming to New York from Liverpool in August of 1849 prior to them settling in Watertown WI.

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=nypl&h=102...

With the family members listed below.

2 Peters ages 54 and 36
2 Anns ages 42 and 30
3 Julias ages 24, 55, and 11
1 John age 12
1 Ellen age 8
1 Luke age 8
1 Essy age 5
1 Mary age 3

While this is not 100% proof that they are the same family that I have been researching for years, it’s strong enough evidence to convince me. I would love to hear if you have been able figure out why there are 2 Peters, 2 Anns, and 3 Julias. The age of the younger Ann matches my other records showing her to be born in 1819. However, neither of the ages of the two Peters on the ship matches my other records showing Peter to be born in ~1805.

Somewhere in my records, I found that Peter and Ann were married in Dublin so I searched for a marriage record in Dublin and found a possible match at:

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...
Peter and Ann (Petrus and Annam) Marriage record. Record number - DU-RC-MA-6292. The Irishgenealogy data base shows this marriage to take place 16 November 1837 but other research of the parish records shows it took place 16 October 1836. Both show Edward Walker and Maria Grimly to be the witnesses.

Then I searched for birth or baptism records for children of Petrus and Annam Byrne. I found the following baptism records:

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...
Ellena’s baptism record (1838)- Record number DU-RC-BA-40672- This child does not show up on the Patrick Henry. Could this child have died?

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...
Judith’s baptism record (1838). Record number DU-RC-BA-40674- This name does not show up on the Patrick Henry. Could this be Julia, twin of Ellena, shown above?

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...
Baptism for another Ellena (1840). Record number DU-RC-BA-40864. This matches Ellen (age 8) on the Patrick Henry.

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...
Baptism record for Lucas (1840). Record number DU-RC-BA-40867- This matches Luke (age 8) on the Patrick Henry (twin to Ellena #2)

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...
Baptism record for Hester (1842)-Record number DU-RC-BA-41126- This child does not show up on the Patrick Henry. Could this child have died?

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...
Baptism record for Esther (1843)- Record number DU-RC-BA-41270- This matches Essy (age 5) on the Patrick Henry.

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...
Baptism record for Maria Anna (1845)- Record number DU-RC-BA-41610 - This matches Mary (age 3) on the Patrick Henry.

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...
Baptism record for Thomas (1847)- Record number DU-RC-BA-41918- This child does not show up on the Patrick Henry. Could this child have died?

Noticeably missing from the list of Baptisms is John, the oldest of the children listed on the Patrick Henry.

I couldn’t find any more baptisms for children of Petrus and Annam after Thomas in 1847. This is far from proof but there are many similarities. Do you have comments/ evidence for or against my theory that Petrus and Annam are our Peter and Ann Byrne that came to New York in 1849 and eventually settled in Watertown WI?
Their children that survived past early childhood were born in the Illinois, USA.

They immigrated to the USA about 1855. and arrive in Venice, IL. sometime before 1860. According to the 1860 census they were well established and financially well off.

Thomas was a farmer and a construction contractor for several of the cities in Illinois near St. Louis.

My great-great-grandmother was Jane Keegan. Jane was either the sister or cousin of Elizabeth Keegan. Jane
was born in Ireland on November 26, 1842/1845. Jane married John Byrnes, the brother of Thomas Byrnes. Jane Y John also lived in Venice. Jane immigrated to the USA in the period 1852-1855.

John was born in Ireland, probably in the Carlow area and was born about 1829. John died in Venice in 1872.

We don't have any information about the Byrne family. We know that Bridget and Edward Kavanagh married in Liverpool and had their first three children there. They emigrated to NYC in the 1860's and added three more children. Children's names were Esther, Hugh, Mary Ann, Edward James, Sarah, and Catharine. Edward Kavanagh was a shoemaker and Bridget was listed as a dressmaker in England; all the girls became dressmakers or milliners, Hugh became a printer.

Does Thomas Byrne and Winnifred Sheridan mean anything to you. This is the couple that had their children sponsored by the Kavanaugh's

Tammy

Thank you. I don't believe that's the same Sarah Byrne, since our Sarah married Joseph VeDepo and settled in Illinois. However, we were in Ireland last summer, and traveled through Donegal. One of our jaunts took us to Killybegs. We wanted to see it because of the song, "The Boys of Killybegs". We absolutely fell in love with County Donegal, and hope to return someday.

Thank you. Joseph and Sarah were my husband's great-great- grandparents. Their son, Charles moved to Iowa City, IA and raised several children. There are several VeDepos still here. We were in Ireland last summer, and drove through County Donegal and attempted to find where Sarah was actually born, but were unsuccessful. I have information on her parents, but some of it is conflicting.
I thought it interesting, however, that Sarah and Joseph met in New York, then got married in New Jersey. I came to Iowa from New Jersey to go to school and met my husband more than 40 years ago. Love the connection back to my home state. Also, for whatever reason, Charles VeDepo spelled his name with a capital D. Apparently, we're the only ones who do.

I have been looking for the family of Bridget Byrne. She listed her father's name as James when she married Edward Kavanagh in Liverpool in 1859. We haven't been able to find any other info on her other than the marriage registry from Oct, 1859 and later US census records in which she lists her birthplace as Ireland. She and Edward have six children- the eldest was Esther (b. 1861), Hugh (b. 1862 named for Edward's father), then Mary Ann, Edward, James, and Sarah. They emigrated to New York City about 1866.

Edward SR was a shoemaker, all daughters became dressmakers and milliners.

Peter and Ann Byrne from Watertown WI

Many of you have seen the record of Peter Byrne and Ann Kelly Byrne coming to New York from Liverpool in August of 1848 prior to them settling in Watertown WI.

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&db=ne...

With the family members listed below.

2 Peters ages 34 and 36
2 Anns ages 42 and 30
3 Julias ages 24, 55, and 11
1 John age 12
1 Ellen age 8
1 Luke age 8
1 Essy age 5
1 Mary age 3

While this is not 100% proof that they are the same family that I have been researching for years, it’s strong enough evidence to convince me. I would love to hear if anybody has been able figure out why there are 2 Peters, 2 Anns, and 3 Julias.

Then I searched for birth or baptism records for children of Petrus and Annam Byrne. I found the following baptism records:

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...
Ellena’s baptism record (1838)- This child does not show up on the Patrick Henry. Could this child have died?

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...
Judith’s baptism record (1838)- This name does not show up on the Patrick Henry. Could this be Julia, twin of Ellena shown above?

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...
Baptism for another Ellena (1840). This matches Ellen (age 8) on the Patrick Henry.

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...
Baptism record for Lucas (1840). This matches Luke (age 8) on the Patrick Henry (twin to Ellena #2)

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...
Baptism record for Hester (1842)- This child does not show up on the Patrick Henry. Could this child have died?

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...
Baptism record for Esther (1843)- This matches Essy (age 5) on the Patrick Henry.

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...
Baptism record for Maria Anna (1845)- This matches Mary (age 3) on the Patrick Henry.

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...
Baptism record for Thomas (1847)- This child does not show up on the Patrick Henry. Could this child have died?

Noticeably missing from the list of Baptisms is John, the oldest of the children listed on the Patrick Henry.

I couldn’t find any more baptisms for children of Petrus and Annam after Thomas in 1847. This is far from proof but there are many similarities. Does anybody have comments/ evidence for or against my theory that Petrus and Annam are our Peter and Ann Byrne that came to New York in 1848 and eventually settled in Watertown WI?
