Good afternoon.
Well my late mother was a Cadman and she was born in Worksop, Nottingham in 1904. She had a sister Dorothy, 1897, 2 brothers Sidney Settles 1898 and Ernest 1900. After several years I hav e decided to come back on here to see if I can find any more of the family.

Cadman - any Jewish Connections?

Hi all you Cadman's out there - good to know we are still going strong after all these years.

I can trace a good few Cadmans - I am one of three sisters -
Kay (born 1962), Susan (born 1944), Patricia (born 1946).
Our dad was Kenneth Claude Cadman - Born 1914 died 2007
His brother was Reginald Hugh (born 1909) and their sister was Dorothy Kathleen Annie Cadman Bird.

Grandfather: Claude Greener Cadman, born around 1885 died 1947
His father: Henry Greener Cadman.

Interesting thing is that Kenneth, Reg and Henry were all Anglican clergymen!

I have always felt however extremely drawn to the Jewish faith, and wonder where in our lieage this really kicks in.

The Cadman's I know of were "dragged up" in/around Salford Manchester.

I was born and bred in Guernsey, Channel Islands - my Uncle Reg was rural dean of Truro - and Vicar of Paul, near Mousehole. My dad was Vice Dean of Guernsey, and Rector of SSt Pierre du Bois and Torteval during the 1980's.

My Grandfather went out to Selangor in Malaysia and married my grandmother in 1910 - he was employed by GEC and effectively "took" the wireless to that part of the country.

If this Emily was sister of Mary Jane and daughter of Robert & Mary Ann then she was my wife's great aunt, albeit they never seem to have met. In the time since your 2001 query you may have researched this line sufficiently but happy to help if I can.

Hello there, was nice to hear from you, always interested in the Cadman clan.Robert is a name that does not come up often in my
group, mostly Joseph,James,Richard,William.I must tell you that
I am only doing the direct line,if the siblings and/or children come up I will list them, but at aged 68yrs,I dont think I would ever cover them, besides I have to leave my kids something in their old age.I am never surprised or shocked anymore, there are several in my different families that could ill afford the price of a marriage licence,or the father absconded leaving the poor girl to cope alone. If Dad was in trade it followed the son would also go into that trade also.Cheers.Marion

My wife has a Staffordshire ascent through Robert CADMAN 1851-1919 & Mary Ann BRADSHAW > William CADMAN 1828-1887 & Elizabeth TWIGG > probably Elizabeth CADMAN b1807 then > Robert CADMAN & Hannah. As you say, it is sometimes difficult to be 100% sure.

At his marriage in 1848, William's father was recorded as Robert Cadman, shoemaker but IGI indicates that only William's mother Elizabeth Cadman was recorded at 3 Feb 1828 christening. My conjecture is that the father noted in 1848 may have been William's maternal grandfather.

Robert b1851 was a shoemaker, as was his father, William; so if I have this right there were at least three generations of CADMANs in that trade in Staffordshire.

Happy to compare notes if any of this seems familiar.

anneval30, I have half an answer for you so far. The Cadman/White group who were born in the 1600s were real people. I suspect that the earlier birth dates is due to some confused soul's not focusing on the task at hand. I'm doing more work on the earlier dates before I can help you more.
carolina argentina

Hi, I am in the state of WA and have Cadman in my tree. There is some major confusion. Perhaps you could help. There are two birth dates and death dates for George Cadman b. 1660 & 1583 and his wife Hanna Hathaway b. 1662 & 1587, and their only child Elizabeth Cadman b. 1685 & 1608 who married Wm White b. 1683 & 1600. These names lead to the Mayflower names Cooke and Warren, but if I follow these dates there is approx. a 100 year gap to either the previous generation or the following generation depending upon which years are used. Hope this is not too confusing. Do you or anyone reading this have an answer?

I am Jewish and my great-grandmother was Mary Jane Cadman. Her father was Luther Cadman. So perhaps there are no ancient roots, but there is one today. My father, who was Mary Jane Cadman's grandson married my mother, who was Jewish. Therefore I am a Jew with deep Cadman ties in my heritage. This may or may not be of interest to anyone.
Dolores Robin Fletcher Ribakoff

This is a very obscure enquiry! At a neighbourhood gathering the other day, we were discussing naval boats and it came to me that way back in the 1950's when I was a young boy, I spent a memorable afternoon out on the Waitemata Harbour on a large boat. It was an ex navy fairmile and, if I'm not mistaken, it was owned by a Mr Cadman. A friend of someone in my family. For years after, as a reasonably regular visitor to Auckland from our home in Napier, I used to admire the same boat moored in the Orakei basin.

Then, I think it was aquired by the Government, renamed MV Colville, and was used to service lighthouses.

Does this ring a "bell" with anyone? Who was the Mr Cadman? What was the boat called before renamed Colville? I think my connection may have been through an uncle Wilf Spragg (Spraggs Garage in Lorne St and later St Heliers).

Have you looked on Free BMD yet - all the info can be followed up on that site and with that info you may be able to trace some of the children.
First of all the mother of Ethel Minnie was another Ethel Minnie..Ethel Minnie Ardley as you said, but she married William Cadman as a Tredgett.
Jun 1938 Edmonton Reg. Vol 3a Pg 2828
William C Cadman
Ethel M. Tredgett
(Ethel had been married before)
Dec 1907 Edmonton Vol 3a Pg 887
Ethel Minnie Ardley
Walter Thomas Tredgett
As you said - William's first wife Maud had already died, so I wondered why the delay in marriage - but it seems Ethel's husband didn't die until 1938.
Walter T. Tredgett
died aged 49 yrs
Jun qtr 1938
London City V
Vol 1c pg 4
The births of those three sons you mentioned are also confirmed on Free BMD all Edmonton Reg. also a possible marriage.
Hope this is of some help and hope you are contacted by some descendents.
Pam

Hi, thank you for your response. My John Cadman, was traced from my grandfather, James and Mary (Avard) cadman. his parents being John, b. ABT 1797 in England and Ann (Robinson)Cadman. John entered the province about 1819(my records are home not with me), and the 1851 census has his mother living with him. Her name was Sarah Cadman, b ABT 1767/1776 and she entered the province 1829. I have not been able to get back any further. There may have been a brother who came with the mother at that time, James Cadman who lived in Ontario, with his son in 1881 this info was gathered about 40 plus years ago, from family members that this may be his brother???.............Thank You so much, any information will be a great help........Julie
