Hello,

I can't remember if I answered your Ancestry message. If I have, just chalk this up as a senior moment.

I will share all the information I have with you.

Margaret Desmond who I believe you said was your grandmother was my Great Aunt. Her parents were William Desmond and Ellen Hayes. I believe they had four children three girls and one boy. They were: John born abt 1861 died 25 Jan 1898; Margaret Mary born 26 Aug 1865; Catherine born 15 June 1868; and Minnie (Mary Ann) - my grandmother born 13 Dec 1871, died about 1941. Parents and children were born in Ireland. I believe County Cork but am not sure about the town - it may have been Cannaway (Canovee).

John died of pneumonia and his death certificate states he was married but I have no name for his wife and do not know if they had children. The information that I have regarding Margaret is that she married John Caldbeck and that they had seven children - Earl being the sixth child born. Minnie was married twice. Her first husband died of TB - they had five children. Minnie then married James Cahill and they had a son David (my Dad.) I have no information about Catherine.
I believe that all the Desmond "children" came to the United States in the late 1890's.

I hope that this is helpful to you. I hope we are related. It would be nice to know that I have some relatives on my Dad side of the family.

Thank you!

Hello,
I just happened to be doing a little searching and saw your reply to my message of a long time ago. I'd love to learn a little more about my great grandmother's, Margaret Mary Desmond's, family and background if you still have the information.

Yes, I find the Irish genealogy to be much more difficult than some others. My maternal grandmother's side is Scottish and much easier as far as researching goes.

Thanks so very much.

I have no idea if you still belong to "Ancestry" but here goes. My grandmother was Minnie (Mary Ann) Desmond Cahill. Her sister was Margaret Mary (Desmond) Caldbeck. I never knew my grandmother Minnie, she died about eight years before I was born. I have some information but not that much. Irish genealogy is extremely difficult because of the "famine" and so many of the records being lost. If you get this please feel free to contact me.

Rebecca Calbeck

I have a Rebecca Calbeck married to Jonathan Sparrow in 1827. In the marriage certificate the only other information is that she was a resident of Lachine, Quebec ( a suburb of Montreal - unless there is another Lachine!) no parents nor other relatives mentioned. The single witness - Joshua [Pelton] there could be a middle initial also. The hand writing was very difficult to decipher. The marriage was registered at Christ Church (Anglican) in Montreal, QC. Jonathan is able to sign, but Rebecca places a 'X' as her signature. Bottom line who were her parents? I realize that Inverness is closer to Quebec City than Montreal but Jonathan was a resident of Godmanchester Township which is south and a bit west of Montreal - How did these two hook up? Thank-you for any information you may have.

Ann

Which relatives did you believe lived in St. Johnsbury and when and where did they live in Quebec? My ggrandfather Michael had 5 children in St. J but only one girl married. Matthew had many children but all but one grandson moved to Mass. I now know that a sister, Margaret, married a Gaffney and also moved to St.J. The oldest brother, William, moved to Manchester, NH with his Carroll inlaws. I'd love to see a genealogy report of your Caldbeck line. Altho I've found a lot of church records and land deeds from Canada still have no idea where in Ireland mine came from.

I'm new to the message boards so please excuse me for any mistakes.

My mother was Charlotte Jean [Caldbeck] Kalajian. She had two sisters, Ruth Marilyn [Caldbeck] Domey and Margaret Lawrence [Caldbeck] Ciociolo both of Holden, MA. Their father was Earl Caldbeck and their mother was Jean Niddrie, from Worcester, MA. Earl and Jean divorced and Earl remarried to Marilyn Laflamme I was told.

My mother and sisters have passed away. My mother told me her father, Earl Caldbeck's, family was from St. Johnsbury, VT. and that her grandmother's name was Margaret Desmond who was Irish.

Charlotte, my mother, had two sons...my brother Rober and me. Ruth has/had a daughter, Jeannie of Lunenburg, MA and Peggy has a son living in Boylston, MA.

I'd be grateful to hear of any info on the family.

Very best regards,
Greg Kalajian
groginvt@adelphia.net

My mother, Charlotte Caldbeck was born in Worcester, MA in 1927 (died in 1993). Her father was Earl Caldbeck and her mother was Jean Niddrie, both of Worcester. Earl Caldbeck and Jean Niddrie divorced and Earl Caldbeck remarried to Marilyn Laflamme.

My mother always said her father's side was from St. Johnsbury, VT and also that her paternal grandmother's name was Margaret Desmond. On familysearch.org I found a marriage of a Joseph Caldbeck to a Margaret Desmond in NH in 1887. I'm looking for more info on the family line and am waiting for Earl Caldbeck's death certificate.

Best regards,
Greg

My great grandmother, Elizabeth Jennie Caldbeck, was one of five brothers and sisters who were born in Inverness, P.Q. sometime around the 1860s (she was born in 1867). I don't have any additional information yet on her family other than the names of her siblings (Mary Delia, Josephine, John and William/"Willie") and the belief that all eventually ended up moving to the United States. My great grandmother married William Noonan and raised a family in Concord, N.H. I believe that her brother Willie ended up in Worcester, Mass. Any additional information will be appreciated.
Steve Angers
sjangers@sover.net

Searching for Caldbecks who are related to William Caldbeck and Bridget Twohey/Toohey/Tooghey etc. William was born 1793 and Bridget in 1804 in County Mayo, Ireland. They had their family in Inverness, Quebec. Michael was born in 1841, married Jane McManus and had their family in St. Johnsbury, VT. between 1873 and 1880. He was a carpenter and a joiner by trade. Matthew was born in 1844m Married Mary Sennitt of Danville, PQ and also had his family in St.J, VT between 1874 and 1885. He was a builder and started a prosperous lumber yard. According to the church records of St.
Athanase in Inverness, PQ there were 2 other brothers--James and William both married to Carrolls, possible sisters and there was arecord of 8 baptisms for children of thes 2.
They were listed as farmers and to my knowledge probably did not leave Canada. Caldbecks seem not to exist any longer in areas where I once knew of them. Please help.

Can't remember what my original message said.
There were 3 Williams. The one who never came over from Ireland, his son who was born in 1793, came to this country thru Buffalo, NY in the very early 1830s, gradually moved thru NY state to Inverness, PQ and later moved to St. Johnsbury, Vt. after his children Michael, Matthew, and Margaret did. Last there is his son William, born in Buffalo in 1837 who moved to Concord, NH after the last of his children was born in 1883 with his in-laws, William and Bridget Dillon. For more info on the youngest William contact LHallstrom@aol.com because this is there line of the family. There was at least one other son, James, who I believe was the oldest for no other reason than the only record I could find for him in the Inverness church records was one baptism in the earliest available church records leading me to believe that he was married first and had already had his family because William was married in 1864 and had 7 baptismal records. According to a person at the Irish Times there were very few households in the 1864 Valuation and the majority were in Laois Co., formerly Queens. I have no idea how accurate the information was but on Williams death certificate it said he came from Mayo County. Any help?

Ggrandfather, Michael Caldbeck,b12/17/1841 in Inverness to William Caldbeck and Bridget Twohey who were born in Ireland. In records for parish of St. Athanase found records of 2
more brothers, William and James- the marriage of William and the record of 6 baptisms. Spelled Colback or Caldback in church records but where signed name clearly spelled Caldbeck. Michael and Matthew and parents moved to Vt. Are there possibly any relatives still there?
Sheila

check out website of my cousin. www.sover.net/~briancos/
My great grandfather was Matthew Caldbeck of St. Johnsbury. My cousin has a lot of information on the Caldbeck's on his web site. I believe there are still some in Canada as well. I know a there are a lot of Caldbecks in the Boston area and some in Vermont. My grandmother, Maude Caldbeck was Matthew's daughter. She had three sisters and a brother. Their children and grandchildren live in the Boston Area and in Vermont. I didn't know that Michael Caldbeck was born inQuebec. I always thought he came from Ireland. Odly enough, my father,
James Cosgrove, son of Maude Caldbeck Cosgrove also married a Carroll . (Eleise ) from Boston (not PQ).

I'm researching Calbecks from Queen's County, Ireland, who emigrated to Valcartier, outside of Quebec City, in the 1820s. There may be a connection between your Caldbecks and the family of my Martha Calbeck, through William Caldbeck.
