I am not sure if I have info on the family you are looking for but it is close. Some of the 1870 and 1880 census for this part of Union County MS are very hard to read. Anyway here is a brief rundown on what I have and if it something you are interested in I will send you info on how to access my website.

John Menande Ross ( John Bully) Caldwell 1816SC - 1888MS
Elizabeth Betty Spence 1816 SC - 1850 SC ( first Wife)
1.Rose Anna 1845
2.William W. 1847
3.Agnes Elizabeth 1849

Nancy Caldwell 1821 SC - 1902 MS (2nd wife & first cousin)
1.James W. 1854
2.Margaret 1855
3.Joseph S. 1861

In the 1880 census you will find John B. and Nancy Caldwell living in Union County MS with children Elizabeth, Margaret, and Joseph. Elizabeth is a child of the first marriage and Margaret and Joseph are from the 2nd marriage. The DOB birth for these children that you have in message match what Ancestry has on the census record but due to readability some are off a little bit.

The one thing that throws some doubt on my info being what you are looking for is the John Thomas Caldwell born 1850. It is very possible that I missed a child of the first marriage and since John B.'s first wife died in 1850 in Newberry South Carolina. She could have died just after the birth of a child ( maybe your John Thomas)

Nancy Caldwell was first married to a Walker Dyer and they had three children. They apparently divorced and he was later killed at Shiloh.

If this is of interest to you please contact me at

Lpcrudyc@comcast.net

Rudy Caldwell
Tupelo, MS

I have a strong feeling that we do have a connection. There is a record of my William signing the Declaration of Allegiance to the US. I think he was a Tory and fought on that side. After the war he then signed the Declaration and stayed in the U.S. when his family refused and went to Canada.

Do you have a marriage date for Robert and Sarah?

Hi Nabob. Many thanks for your reply. I don't believe we are connected. If we are, the only scenario I can come up with is that your William is the same person as mine. I have a question about my William because in my research he has only appeared once on my radar. The only reference I found of him was in an ancestry.com member's family tree. He is never mentioned again. I have thought that maybe, just maybe he fought as a Patriot, was disowned by his family and remained in NYS after the War of Independence, while his family made a life in Canada. I have one question of you - Who was your William's parents? Am I right in assuming that Paul (your g/g/g.f) was William's son. If I can establish that William was Robert & Sarah's 1st born and that Paul was then their grandson then we are connected. I will continue to keep William on my radar. Happy hunting!!

Hi Carol.
Many thanks for your reply.
My Caldwell Descendants were rewarded with farmland in New Carlisle but I believe the loyalist were offered land in New Carlisle or Ontario. For my particular descendants, Darlene's Genealogy Pages website was an excellent website for me in particular. But another website that actually helped me over my "brickwall" was the Genforum.com website, where I posted a message. I have just opened up the Boulton Family on that particular website to see if maybe they would be of assistance to you and found a no. of posted messages looking for Boulton descendants.

Good luck with your search

As for finding info on my descendants in the USA, I have a strong feeling that anything to do with loyalists was somehow lost.

My 2nd great grandmother, Elizabeth E. Caldwell, was born in 1817 at Port Perry, Ontario, Canada and married Abraham Boulton abt. 1869. In later years, they moved to Cass City, MI, USA. They had 5 children that I know of:
Charlotte Maria Boulton b. June 1840
Mary Eliza Boulton b. Oct., 1841
Lydia Marie Boulton b. Aug., 1844
Abraham Edward Boulton b. Jan, 1852 and
John Wesley Boulton b. May, w856
I know I am grasping at straws here butI have come upon a brick wall and have had no luck finding who her parents and siblings were.
It isn't often that I see any information regarding Canadian Caldwell's.
The Bolulton's were also Loyalists and left NY when it seemed that there would be war.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows of Canadian Caldwells.

My email address is: cmlackey2@triad.rr.com

I am searching for information on Andrew Caldwell who came to KY from Pennsylvania in the late 1700's. He married Margaret Colins who was from Ireland near Dublin. He settled in Fleming Co and his son James came to Marion Co Indiana with his wife Catharine and three sons. I know the family line down from there but cannot find much info on Andrew. Besides his marriage I have found one other tax record that refers to someone in Fleming Co in 1798. Besides James, his other children were: Elizabeth( Lightfoot) Joab, John, Martha (Singer?), Andrew, Margaret (Rurst), Thomas, William, Mandy(Cunningham). Listed are married names in parenthesis. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Jennifer Caldwell

I think I'm researching the same family but I'm looking at a Thomas b c1830 & Mary b c1833 both of Pittsburgh. Most of the children you list & their DOB's line up with the Thomas/Mary CALDWELL I'm researching. Their eldest was Alonzo b 1 Dec 1877 Pittsburgh & his eldest was Alonzo John Caldwell b 14 May 1908.

Linda

I am trying to determine if this Caldwell is, or is not, a relative of mine. I am related to the Caldwell's living in or near Union City TN, Obion County. We can trace our lineage back to three brothers who came over to this country on the Mayflower. We are also related to Dr. David Caldwell (d. 1824, Greensboro NC) who operated the Caldwell Academy--a training academy for the ministry. He was a Presbyterian minister.

William Caldwell

In regard to my recent post on the family bible of William Caldwell and his wife Martha Spence, I am attaching a FTM printout on the family of William Caldwell The names of their children and DOB and some of the DOD came from the information found in their bible. Some of the other information came from my own research. It is interesting to note that William and Martha named two of their children Robert and two Ann. The first Robert and first Ann each only lived adout one month and they then named later children Robert and Ann. Robert was the names of William's father and I think that Ann was Martha's middle name but have no proof. If anyone has any additional information on this family, please contact me at Lpcrudyc@comcast.net

Rudy caldwell
Tupelo, MS

William Caldwell

I have just recently obtained the family bible of William Caldwell 8 Dec 1786 Newberry County SC - 25 May 1861 Pontotoc County MS and Martha Spence 2 Nov 1794 Newberry - 8 Mar 1854 Pontotoc. The family bible was printed in 1817. The family history pages lists DOB for William and Martha plus the names and DOB for their 13 children. The DOD for some of the family is also listed. Both William and Martha and some of their children are buried at the Hopewell ARP Church Cemetery in Union County MS. The Hopewell Church was formed 24 May 1851 in the home of William and Martha Caldwell. of the 22 charter members of the Hopewell Church, 19 were Caldwell family members. This family group were members of the Shiloh ARP Church in Anderson County and moved to Pontotoc county MS in about 1850. The area where the church is located was in Pontotoc County MS until 1870 when Union County was formed and that area became part of Union County.
The Hopewell ARP Church is still an active church located at the same site as the original church. The Bible has been given to the Hopewell Church and placed on display there. Attached are the family history pages copied from the bible.

Hi,

I don't know when you posted your query, but I just found it. My husband is also a descendant of Alexander Caldwell. I have most of the Caldwell Family newsletters, as we were very active in the Caldwell Organization for a long time. But, they are on-line now. Try googling "Caldwell Family Newsletters". I've seen them on the net, myself. Mrs. Faler passed away some years ago, but someone made them available. I'll be happy to answer any questions I can. Jan

Looking for any information on my grandfather James Elmer Caldwell. The only facts I know for sure is that he died in Arkansas on March 17, 1998 and was buried in Tennesse, where he also applied for his s.s. card. I do know that he had atleast 4 wives and more than 7 children. He claimed to be born July 11, 1926 but not really sure where. He also claimed to have around 10 to 11 siblings. Two sisters possibly by the names of Bertha and Ruby. We know for sure he has lived in Georgia, Michigan and Arkansas, with possible ties to Indiana and Tennesee.

Re: Dr. Joseph Caldwell and Western PA

Title: History of Washington County, Pennsylvania: with biographical sketches of many of its pioneers and prominent men
Authors: Crumrine, Boyd, 1838-1916, Ellis, Franklin, 1828-1885, Hungerford, Austin N.

Pg. 889
JOHN SWEARINGEN, whose name if often found in the records of Yohogania County Court, was a resident of Peters Township, and lived upon the land which has since been known as the Borland property. The tract, which was called “Oswego,” contained 350 acres, for which the patent was granted in 1790. In 1796, Mr. Swearingen sold his land to Andrew Borland. In 1808 the latter gentleman sold 103 acres of it to Joseph Henry, who in turn disposed of that part to WILLIAM CALDWELL, and it is now owned by MRS. JOSEPH CALDWELL. The sawmill on Brush Run was built by Henry Borland while he owned the property. It afterwards belonged to ROBERT and JOSEPH CALDWELL, and is now in the possession of their descendants.

Pgs. 947, 948
WILLIAM SMITH was born on Mingo Creek, Nottingham Township, Washington Co., Pa., June 28, 1804, the youngest in the family of six children of WILLIAM and MARY (CALDWELL) SMITH. His father was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, was married there, and emigrated to America in 1798. He first settled on Mingo Creek, Nottingham Township. In 1807 he purchased a farm of 106 acres, situated on East Chartiers Creek, on the southern limit of North Strabane Township. Both he and his wife were members of the Pigeon Creek Church. He died July 20, 1840, aged 82. His wife died Aug. 10, 1844, aged 85. Both are buried at Pigeon Creek. Their children were SARAH, JAMES, MARGARET, ANN, MARIA, and WILLIAM. All were born on Mingo Creek, except SARAH, who was born in Ireland. The latter was the wife of ROBERT HANNA, moved to Harrison County, Ohio, where her husband died. She then returned to Washington County, and lived with her brother WILLIAM until her death.

JAMES married PRUDENCE HANNA, sister of ROBERT. He settled on a farm about three miles above Washington, and died there in about six months.

MARGARET lived and died at the residence of her brother WILLIAM. Neither SARAH nor JAMES had children. SARAH, JAMES and MARGARET are buried at Pigeon Creek Church.

ANN was the wife of DR. JOSEPH CALDWELL, who died in Butler County. She had children as follows: WILLIAM, MARY, JAMES, BELL, MARGARET, SAMUEL, SARAH and JOSEPH, all of whom except MARGARET married and raised families. SAMUEL CALDWELL has been for many years one of the officers of Dixmont Hospital. MRS. CALDWELL died in Allegheny City and is buried there.

WILLIAM SMITH lived at the homestead until 28 years of age. He married, Feb. 2, 1832, ELIZABETH, daughter of ANDREW and ELIZABETH (RIDDLE) VAN EMAN. MRS. SMITH was born April 14, 1803, on the place now occupied by her son, ANDREW WYLIE SMITH.

From savings during his stay on the home farm MR. SMITH purchased a farm of 70 acres in Somerset Township, and after marriage moved to it, continuing, however, the management of the home farm, which came into his possession upon the death of his father.

In 1854 he purchased of James McDowell the grist and saw mills on the East Branch of Chartiers Creek, rebuilt and remodeled them, and has carried them on ever since. He has dealt extensively in Spanish merino sheep and in Durham cattle. He has added time to time to his original purchase of 70 acres until he has, nearly in one body, 600 acres of land.

In politics he is a lifelong Democrat. He united with the Pigeon Creek Church in 1832, and has been an elder, also a trustee, in the same for many years.

His first wife died April 18, 1874, and is buried at Pigeon Creek. By her he had children as follows:

JAMES, born May 9, 1834, died Oct. 29, 1834.

ANDREW WYLIE, born Nov. 5, 1835, married SARAH ANN DOAK. Children: WILLIAM D., WYLIE W., LIZZIE MAY, JOHN MARCUS, VAN EMAN D., and an infant daughter.

WILLIAM JAMES, born June 17, 1845. Married JANE, daughter of THOMAS McNARY. Living upon and carrying on the homestead farm. Children: THOMAS McNARY, LIZZIE, WILLIAM, and ELLA.

SARAH JANE, born June 20, 1847. Wife of ANDREW N. HAGGERTY, a theological student at the Allegheny Seminary.

MR. SMITH married again Nov. 9, 1875, ELEANOR, daughter of ROBERT and ELIZABETH BOYD, and widow of ISAAC WALL.

Since his last marriage MR. SMITH has settled on a place in Somerset Township, near his mill property, and has withdrawn from active business.

Title: History of Washington County, Pennsylvania: with biographical sketches of many of its pioneers and prominent men
Authors: Crumrine, Boyd, 1838-1916, Ellis, Franklin, 1828-1885, Hungerford, Austin N.
Pgs. 955, 956
WILLIAM SMITH, a native of Ireland, came to this county and settled for a time on Mingo Creek, and July 25, 1807, purchased 109 acres of land of Nicholas Vaceman, where he settled and died.
William (Bill) McClure Caldwell Jr

Bill was my brother. At the age of 52 he was working for the Missouri Hwy
Dept until he was lost his life by being ran over at top speed by an old man on too many heart medications. At the time of his death he was married to
Carla Sue Caldwell(Jones) She sued the old man. To this day she and my brother's daughter are living off of my dead brother.
Bill was killed July 1989 in SpringHill, Missouri. He lived in Odessa, Missouri
and was buried in Odessa, Missouri. (Not by my choice. Or even asked) If anyone has any info on Bill. Please let me know. All I can find are his Year book pictures. He was a very handsome soft spoken man. Deidre87

If he was genuinely a Sir, then that means he was a knight. There are records kept of all such awards, which should contain some personal history. The records for knighthood are held by the Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood in London, a department of the Lord Chancellor's office.

There are several good books listing the knighthood records for Ireland, Scotland, and England and information on them can be located at:

http://www.jacomb.com/misc.htm
Both William & Hester/Ester buried in Beaver Dam Cemetery, Henry Co., TN. Go to http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tndigs/henry/cemetery/inde... and just put Caldwell in the search box. You'll find them easily and that a daughter of Preston's - Caroline - is buried there also. I have pictures of the tombstones if you want to send an email address. Also have records of their marriage bond/marriage in VA. You can also find Hester living in Preston's household in the 1850 census.

Thank you for replaying. I ran across William and Hester/Ester Buchannan Caldwell several years ago. But, at that time I was unable to connect them to Henry County. Would you happen to have documentation?

Regina

Seeking Connections

William, son of David & Helen (illegible) b circa 1843 (no birth reg), married Catherine Gordon b circa 1844 (no birth reg) daughter of Thomas Gordon and Agnes Wright. Caldwell/Gordon were married 1865 in Neilston at the Gordon residence. William like his father was a foundry man. William’s father David was also one of the founding members of the Barrhead Cooperative Society.

William died 1912 at Fairfield House on Carlibar Rd. in Barrhead and his wife Catherine in 1922. Children were Agnes, Nellie, Kate and Jessie, I am still sorting out their marriages but at least two had husbands as informants on their parents death reg. One married J.A.
Chrystal, it would be good if you could add dates (birth, death, marriage, etc), as well as names of other family members if you know them.

I just did a quick search and found a Thomas Allen Caldwell in Chester, SC, but I'm not sure he's your relative. Do you know the first name of your grandmother or her maiden name? Anything you could add would help us help you.

I may be able to help somewhat here - Preston (b.28 Oct 1802) was the son of William (b. March 28, 1766 - Augusta Co, VA) and Hester (Ester) Buchannan (b 3 OCT 1768). Both are also buried in Henry Co, TN
