Hello, my name is Bruce McRae and I am seeking help from my fellow genealogists about John Campbell and his wife Margaret who were living at Lafayette Springs Lafayette County MS in 1850. In the 1840 census John Campbell is living next to my GGGfather John C. (Campbell) McRae. John Campbell was listed as the head of the household but I believe the two females living with him are his mother and little sister.
John Campbell age between 30 and 40 years
Unknown female age between 50 and 60 years
Unknown female age between 10 and 15 years
Also living next to my GGGfather was his brother Hugh and I believe his younger sister Margaret. John C., Hugh and Margaret were all born in Anson County NC just across the state line from Chesterfield County SC but left in the middle 1830s.
Hugh McRae age between 30 and 40 years
Unknown female age between 20 and 30 years
In the 1850 census we still find John Campbell living next to my GGGfather. This time he is married.
John Campbell 40 year old male NC
Margaret Campbell 41 year old female NC
Caroline Campbell 7 year old female MS
Margaret J. Campbell 6 year old female MS
Augusts Campbell 4 year old male MS
Martha A. Campbell 2 year old male MS
Christina Campbell 68 year old female SC
In 1860 we find this family but John and Margaret Campbell are not found in Lafayette County:
W. T. Wilkins 32 year old male GA
Nancy Wilkins 33 year old female TN
Mary Wilkins 4 year old female MS
Sarah Wilkins 1 year old female MS
Chris Campbell 70 year old female SC
Note: In the Lafayette County marriage book we find that Nancy J. Campbell married W.T. Wilkins on January 3, 1856.
I found Nancy Campbell (born in TN) in the 1850 census living with a Daniel M. Campbell (born in NC) and his wife Caroline (born in SC) and their five children. She is listed as being 29 years old.
I believe that John Campbell and Nancy Wilkins are brother and sister and that Christina/Chris is their elderly mother. I also believe that the wife of John Campbell is Margaret McRae the sister of John C. and Hugh McRae. I suspect that they married sometime after the 1840 census but I do not find a marriage record for John Campbell in Lafayette County. I am seeking information from the descendents of John Campbell that can tell me if my assumptions are correct (or way off) about Margaret being a McRae and where did John and Margaret move after they left Lafayette County MS. I am very interested in these Campbells because John C., Hugh, and Margaret are children of Farquhar McRae and Catherine (Kate) Campbell. I believe that Farquhar and Catherine married somewhere in SC then moved to Anson County NC.
Regards,
Bruce McRae
