Don, it seems like I read a document possibly from the NC state library where they hold a religious book for james, not quite a bible but I'm assuming what they used. It was published in Scotland. Anyway - there was a letter either at the library or online from a relative to Charlie. I will have to look it up to remember what it was. I think a typewritten story about the family. Now that I know you are from Charlie, I will reread it again with more interest and send it to you. You may already have this document. But also, and again, the Campbell Bible is at the NC state library in Raleigh. I'd like to pull it one day and take a look if I can get down there.

Best regards from someone who is proud to be a campbell!

Terri

Bruce,

Could the Elizabeth Campbell listed in your post be the Mary Anne (A.E) Campbell who married My ggfather Farquhar C. McRae in Barbour Co. Alabama in 1854? The "E" could possibly be Elizabeth.

The information in your post matches a lot of ancillary data I have. My Mary Campbell was born in 1833 - matches being youngest listed for father who died in 1834.

My Mary was living with a Cameron family at the time she was married - could be that her mother could not support her after father's death.

According to family lore as spoken by my father, FC and Mary had to leave Alabama because of a 'family feud' as a result of the marriage. It could be that the feud was because they were cousins and the family objected to the marriage.

I have followed the most fragile of leads in trying to identify my Mary's parents - this one is as good or better than any other.

B.T.W. - how is your book coming along??
Terri:
Thanks for your response. I'm intrigued: Do you have a ship name for the trip they came over on?
To answer your query: It's easier to first look at Google maps, then go to Google Earth, I think. Focus on Clarkton, NC, then move north. You will see a road (Harrelson Rd.) that connects US701 and Mercer Mill Brown Marsh Road about three or four miles north of Clarkton. Between Cribb Road and Irene Drive (south side of Harrelson) is where, I'm told, James Campbell's plantation was. If you switch to Google Earth, you will see a large patch of woods there. In that patch of woods is the remains of a dam that was part of a grist mill owned by James. There is a stream that runs through there, but you can only see it on a road map, not on Google Earth. I haven't been in those woods since the early 60s, but the dam was still visible then.
Directly south of there on MMBM Road, you will see an icon for Brown Marsh Presbyterian Church, where James and several of his descendants are buried, and where James was an elder.
The precise boundaries of James' plantation are not clear to me, but I believe they may be spelled out in his will, which is easily found on the Internet. Suffice it to say, it was quite large, because he bequeathed hundreds of acres to various descendants and relatives.
To the west of 701, you will see a road named Campbell Road, which was named for my Uncle Charlie, who lived his whole life there, but has been long passed. If you ever do head that way, you might want to call my cousin Charles Lee Campbell, who lives in Raleigh (919) 847-5822, but I believe still owns the farm of his father. He has been in the woods described above much more recently than I have.
Finally, if you have any details on the Lamont family roots in Scotland beyond what you mentioned above, please share. I hope to get back to Scotland sometime this summer or fall, and I'd love to zero in on Catherine's roots if possible. Like most others, I've about given up on figuring out where James' father was born.
Don Campbell

No, I have not gotten down there yet. I am in VA. But...that said, if you can tell me the area/address I can view it on google maps or google earth right?

The family continues to fascinate me but I can find nothing concrete. Hitting the brick wall like everyone else.

On the other hand, there is evidence of the Lamont family in Kilfinnan Scotland. Search for the Lamont DNA research site. They are intwined with the Campbell family.

Also, researching Buies and Shaws has provided some insight about the Campbell family since it seems they came on the same trip and settled together, married each other etc.

Terri A.

Hi,Sarah and Louise, Nice to hear from you. I had all but given up on anyone replying to my messages. From the family info I have - You are descended from Alexander, who is John's brother - which is my great grand father. Is this correct? I have a book by Elizabeth Hayes (one of the family cousin's)called Dugald and Ann - Our Campbell history 1837-2004. This has been very helpful, although I have found a couple if mistakes in it. It even has a photo of Louise as a little girl. As you can imagine, trying to trace John Campbell in Scotland - which is about all the info we have has been impossible. I can't even get much on Dugald and Duncan - his son's. Dugald of course is our direct line who immigrated to New Zealand, and hence we become! I am wondering if John's first wife Mary - died maybe giving birth to Duncan and then he remarried??? Which will leave us with another family to trace. Do you know anything this far back? Regards Robyn. email: shadesnsails@iprimus.com.au if this is easier??

Hi Pat,

I have been looking a long time and still can't make a connection between my paternal Grandfather John H. Campbell and his parents (supposedly George H. Campbell and Lena Miller).

FYI: Evidently, George had only this one son, John H. Campbell. As far as John's mother being Lena Miller, she is supposed to be part American Indian; however I have a feeling John is George's son but not Lena's actual son.

Good luck in your search.

I'm going to Scotland sometime in the next year and am interested in visiting the area where James' father (presumably John) was born. Can you please tell me if your research shows where in Scotland he emigrated from? It's such a common name that the Registry in Edinburgh is not of much help unless you have some idea which region of the country in which he was born.
Thanks for any help,

don43james

I found translated info however never seen the actual copy. On Ancestry.com It Shows her as actually "Mary J. ???" So I don't know if they couldn't make out the name, couldn't see it or what. Do you have a copy of Susan Virginia's Birth Certificate? That should have Mary's Last name on it. I've been trying to locate my Great Grandfather Charlie Campbell's certificate however have not had much luck.

I didn't know she died due to complicatins of child birth - how did you come by that info? Do you know where she's buried? I'm wondering if maybe her death certificate would show her maiden name..

Any info you have is greatly appreciated - oh and nice to meet some kin! - Thanks!

I have no connection to this family, but found this while doing other research. This appeared in the Aug. 30, 1892 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Courier-Gazette in an article entitled “People Talked About – Well Known County Men Now Before the Public.”

“Leonard R. Campbell. Republican Nominee for County Treasurer. Leonard R. Campbell (or as he was christened – Leonard Isaac Reed Campbell) was born in Rockland March 22nd, 1852. Educated in this city graduated from our High school in 1873, being the valedictorian of his class.

“On graduating he pursued a commercial college course in Boston, and filled a position as bookkeeper for a year. His natural bent was towards politics. Though born a Democrat, he never felt himself at home with that party.

“Mr. Campbell read law in the office of County Attorney Prescott and was admitted to the bar last March.”

Do you have a copy of their marriage records? The Ancestry one does not verify the date they were married. Mary died due to complicatins of child birth a few months after my Great Granddmother Susan Virginia was born. I thought it was right after, but Census records show otherwise, but the cause was the same. Someone on Ancestry has Mary's last name as Mankin,Manken,Menken which is supposedly an Indian name, but I have not seen any evidence. Message me please if you find anything. Some of our family had blood work and Indian did not show up. Scots-Irish did and that is what she always claimed to be. ? Susan V sure looked indian to me.

I have some Campbell's in my family tree from the Ohio area.
My Great Grandfather Leonard Campbell lived in Athens Co.,Ohio. Leonard was born in New England Twp., Athens Co., Ohio in 1867. His father, Alexander Campbell was born around 1825. I have found in the Census that he was born in Ohio however Cemetery record shows that he was born in Pittsburgh, PA and his KINDRED was Margaret and Jesse. If this matches up with anyone please let me know because I am hitting a brick wall here. Alexander I think was married before he married my Great Grandmother Elvira Townsend-Forbes.Alexander had 2 children, Leonard and Jessie. Athens Co. also in those days use to be Washington Co., Ohio and was divided later on.

I am looking for information on a John Campbell. His wife was Saphrona Campbell. They were in Ohio in the 1850 census. In the 1860 census, they were living with the family of John Campbell Davis. I have been looking and looking for information on John Campbell Davis ( my husbands 2nd great grandfather). It may be a coincidence, that John Davis' middle name is Campbell, but I think that John Campbell Davis was a cousin to John Campbell. John Campbell was Born abt 1813, Married Saphron, born abt 1820. They had three children, a William, born abt 1848 who I think died young as he was not mentioned in the 1860 census. A Leroy, born abt 1850 and A Fred born abt 1858. I am thinking that John Campbell was the son of John Campbell Davis' sister? or Aunt? Any help is very much appreciated.

Campbell/Jack 1950's

I'm looking for anyone who might have information on a Thomas Jack (June 1945). He has two brothers; one older and one younger. One called Peter, one called Francis. These brothers could either have the name jack or Campbell.

Thomas jack's mother was called Mary, but unsure which surname she had. We are confident however, that she worked at Bellshill Hospital at some point.

The areas of concern here are Wishaw, Lasswade, Shotts and Bellshill.

Re: William Francis Campbell

Any possibility he assumed the name Frank M Campbell and the birth dates 3 December 1882 & 1883? Some guy with this name married my great grandmother Josephine Warner in Pottsville, PA in 1905 then disappeared. She died in 1932 still claiming to be his wife (not his widow). WWI and WWII registration forms in 1918 and 1942 show him living at 1300 Kerbaugh St., Philadelphia and list next of kin as either Anna Campbell or Jean Campbell. Lots of Censi list children of Kate and John H living together in Philadelphia (see 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930).
