Somos Primos! Our common ancestor was Francisco Manuel Gomez del Campillo, the first Campillo who came to San Miguel de Horcasitas in about 1790. He was a landowner and cattle rancher and is mentioned in Cynthia Radding's book, "Wandering Peoples: Colonialism, Ethnic Spaces, and Ecological Frontiers in Northwestern Mexico, 1700-1850". He was married 4 times (3 wives died) and had 15 children. One of the children of marriage #2 to Cristina Gallardo de Murieta was Jose Francisco Julian de los Angeles del Campillo born 1 Feb. 1803. Jose Francisco married (5/June/1824) Maria Manuela Garcia and had one child, Jose Miguel el Refugio del Campillo b. 28/Sept/1825. She died about 1825-1828. Second marriage (28/Sept/1829) to Maria Antonia Landavasco (father was Jose Antonio Landavasco, mother was Maria Petra Valenzuela). I have records for 5 children for them so far: Manuel del Campillo b. about 1838, Procopio Santiago del Campillo b. 15/Jul/1841, Petra del Campillo b. about 1853, Ramon del Campillo b. about 1855, and Alverto del Campillo b. 22/Feb/1855. The Campillo clan is well documented in FHS INTL films 1909863-73. If you like, please send me a note to my email address and I can respond with some pdfs. My email is vcampillo1@cox.net.

I dont think i can help you much with your question, but I know my husband's dad's name is Jose Luis Galaz Valenzuela and he is from Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. I'm just wondering if he might be a descendent of your family since I see those last names in your grandmother's and grandfather's last names. My husband did not grow up with his father so this is pretty much all he knows about the Galaz valenzuela side of the family.

My Campillo ancestors also came from Spain....I believe that the Campillo family line descended from Jose del Campillo y Cosio, a Naval Minister in Spain. Three Campillos (sons or brothers?) received land grants and settled in Mexico City, Veracruz, and what is now Sonora in the 1700’s. I was visiting the Library of the Indies in Seville, Spain, and one of the research librarians told me that Jose del Campillo received the first land grant associated with the name Campillo in Mexico. Quite a bit has been written about him and is readily available on the internet. Others in his family also received land grants. I have not researched that far back and so this is not confirmed.

My branch of the family is from Sonora (Nogales, Hermosillo, San Miguel de Horcasitas,& Guaymas). Campillo is a very uncommon name in Mexico and I have been told that we are all related.

My grandfather was Raul Mario Fernando Campillo (born 5/30/1899 in San Miguel de Horcasitas, Sonora -- died about 1960 while living in Nuevo Laredo, TX). His first marriage was to Maria Guadalupe Morineau. They had 5 children: Raul Antonio, Lorenia, Carlos, Guillermo, and Alejandro Oscar (my father). Raul left the marriage and moved from Los Angeles, CA, about 1931 to Nuevo Laredo and worked for the Mexican Customs Office. From his second marriage, he had four daughters.

My great-grandparents: Antonio Raul Rafael Campillo (born about 1877 in San Miguel de Horcasitas/Nogales, Sonora – died in the 1950’s in Mexico City). He married Luisa Araiza Gonzalez (about 1878-1945) of Nogales. Their children were Raul Mario Fernando, Federico, Berta, Maria Luisa, and Marco Antonio. He was divorced from his wife, Luisa, and moved to Mexico City in the 1920’s. He remarried in Mexico City. He was a rancher in Sonora and after moving to Mexico City he had a liquor import business.

My great-great grandparents were: Antonio Campillo (born about 1845 San Miguel de Horcasitas/Nogales, Sonora and died after 1899) and Victoria Gallegos Elias (born Dec 1855 and died before 1899). They and their respective families were ranchers in Sonora/Arizona.
My grandmother, Esther Montoya Campillo b. San Miguel de Orcasitas in July, 1888 spoke of three brothers Campillo coming from Barcelona with a land grant in Mexico. I've found some records through the parish in Hermosillo but have had no luck with my g-mo or her siblings. I know there are a lot of us out there because her father, Ramon, had brothers Francisco,Miguel, Manuel, and Alberto that I know of. I have a funeral notice for D. Manuel Campillo who died in Hermosillo march 29, 1924 at the age of 82 yrs. I would love to hear from anyone re. this family Muchisimas Gracias, Linda

Hello Mr Campillo.
i've done some researching in Campillo's name. Your message talks about a little town call Santa Rosa. This town is now call Muzquis. because of Melchor Muzquiz who was born there, and he fought in the mexican independance war .
Well, this Melchor Muzquis married in Mexico city in 1830 Joaquina Bezares who was the widow of "Teniente Coronel "Jose Gabriel del Campillo Merino.who also fougth in this war, Joaquina and Jose Gabriel were from Puebla.Joaquina had 8 children with her firts husband and 3 or more with Melchor Muzquis. It's said in Melchor Muzquiz biographie that he died very poor.,in 1840
althought Melchor and Joaquina used to live in Mexico city, I think after he died, the family maybe moved to Santa Rosa . This is in Coahuila state.
I hope this help you, as I had more information for this family from Puebla and Mexico.I'll be glad if you send me information about your Campillo family from Santa Rosa,

Full name, birthdate, birthplace and parents' names would be great to figure out if he is from the Sonora Campillo line. This is the family that I am from. Is he still alive? Do you know any cities where he might have lived? This is enough to start.

Grace,
Thank you for your message. I am a Campillo living in San Diego, CA, and have been doing family research for many years. My family came to California in the 1920's from Nogales, Hermosillo, and San Miguel de Horcasitas, Sonora. The Campillos from Sonora are all descended from one man, Jose del Campillo, who came from Spain via Cuba about 1725. He had sons who were granted land in Sonora, Veracruz, & Mexico City. I found records about Jose del Campillo at the Library of the Indies in Seville, Spain, and other information about him is available. Please tell me about your family, where they live now and where they are from, so maybe we can determine how we might be related. I also responded to the email you sent me. Best Wishes.

A Search for the Sonora Campillo History

I am as listed, Armand in the USA, born in & living in San Diego CA.USA. I am at this writing 72 years old. My father was Jesus Galaz Campillo born in 1894 in Guaymas Son. Mex.( My mother was Rosa Montenegro Valenzuela de Campillo born in 1900 in Phoenix, AZ) His father was Fernando Campillo Tapia and his mother Carmen Sanchez Galaz de Campillo. My father, Jesus, was the last of seven children. Three girls and four boys. The oldest brother was Fernando Campillo Galaz whose wife was Rosaura Vega de Campillo. They were the dominant Campillos in Hermosillo and went on to have many children and grandchildren. Amongst their chidren I came to know Roberto and Guillermo, my first cousins, before they died. That was many years ago. The other senior Campillos, my fathers brother Vicente came to live in Los Angeles CA many years ago. His son, Fernando, died early and left a wife, Connie and several children. My Fathers sisters married: one to a Mercado, another to a Palma, and another to an Almada.

I look for history. My father used to tell me that the story of the Campillos was that four brothers came from Spain (year?) from (?) province, in (?) year. Two stayed in the south, Veracruz or (?) and two headed north (when?) to what is now Sonora. One of those was a priest who may have had something to do with the founding of Nogales, Son. Mex. The other presumably my forefather established a ranch. The name for many years was "Santa Rosa" somewhere in proximity to Hermosillo but a place which presumably has since change names. Aledgedly, the Campillos figuered prominently in the early history of the state of Sonora Mex.

My first cousins in Mexico that I knew are deceased as far as I know. Their children I presume still live. But, I know little of them. I seek someone who knows our particular family history so that I may share it with my four children before I pass on. Is there anyone out there that can help?

avcsd@cox.net

I came across your message that your father's ancestor was possibly named Manuel Campillo and was from the area near Hermosillo, Sonora. The Campillo families in Sonora who were ranchers seem to have originated from the San Miguel de Horcasitas area. I was doing research tonight at the LDS Family History Center and ran across many entries on roll 1,909,868 (Mexico, Sonora, San Miguel de Horcasitas) - go about 70% through to where the confirmations are for the Campillo family. Manuel Campillo was married to Teresa Arvizu. It mentioned that his children were confirmed on 3/27/1889 (#141, J. Rafael Campillo; #142, J. Ramon Campillo), on 3/29/1889 (#9, M. Teresa Campillo), on 4/1/1889 (#3, J. Manuel Campillo), on 6/9/1900 (#18, Jesus Campillo; #19, Maria Campillo; #187, Alejandra Campillo). There is a Manuel Campillo listed as married to Carlota Martens (also spelled Martenz) whose child was confirmed on 12/22/1902 (#2, J. Esgardo Campillo). I did not get beyond 1902 tonight, and so there may be more children. If these names sound familiar, see roll 1,909,868 with entries between 1808 and 1931.

My family has the same story: 3 brothers that came to Mexico from Spain. I understand one went to Veracruz, one to Mexico City, and my ancestors to a large land grant in New Spain that was initially between Tucson, AZ and Hermosillo, Sonora, named San Miguel de Horcasitas. In 1847, the US purchased what is now Arizona and so the ranch was reduced in size from Nogales MX to near Hermosillo. My great-great grandfather Campillo was alive at this time and was a cattle rancher. The Guyamas Campillos and the Nogales and Hermosillo area Campillos were descendants of the same brother that went to New Spain. I did a little research at the Library of the Indies in Seville, Spain, and found that the first Campillo to come to the new world about 1700 was Jose del Campillo. I saw records of Campillos going to Cuba, and three brothers to Mexico. I have some geneology research completed (birth & marriage records and photographs) going back to about 1800-1830, and will be doing more in the future. Is anybody interested is working together to speed things up?

My dad is 6'3" too... there was also a rumor that his biological father (Campillo) was a farmer in the area, but the Fernando thing doesn't ring a bell.
They said his name was Manuel. The green eyes are definitely from that side of the family, though, not Mom. Thanks for your help!!!

My fathers family is tall (Dad was 6'3"). No green eyes-did they come from your Mom's side of the family? I know that some of the Campillo's in my family near Hermosillo and Guaymas were large farmers. All first born men in my family were named Fernando. Is there any other info I can give?

The name

Campillo comes from Spain. My family history says that 3 brothers came from Spain with a land grant to Mexico in the 1600's. I have a book that talks of a priest by the name of Campillo in the early 1800's. In my family, every first born male is named Fernando. Contact me if you share a similar family history.
