Can you give me any information about Christian Canary whose son William Henry Canary told the 1860 census taker that both his parents had been born in Germany, that is, Christian Canary and Barbary Garshwiler. I think Christian was born about 1769, and records say he died in 1812 and fought in the War of 1812. Obviously, all the information I have about his ancestors is wrong. Please help me correct this.

Thanks so much.

I notice in the message you posted more than a year ago that you have information on the Canary family coming from Ireland. That interests me very much because I am well into writing a new biography of Calamity Jane. I have only been able to trace her family back to Grandpa James (1788-1862), who was born in Virgina (a part that later became West Virginia in the Civil War times) and died in Princeton,
Missouri. I do know that an older man was with James and his wife Sarah Wilson Canary when they first lived in Ohio, and someone has said it was his father, another James, who would have been Calamity's graat-grandfaher. I would interested in hearing any information you have on the early Canarys--the pre-Grandpa James Canarys. You have read James McLaird's wonderful book on Calamity Jane (2005), have you not? It's by far the best source we have on her. I've published three or fours essays on Calamity and hope to really focus on her this next year.

Richard (Dick) Etulain

I am married to a Canary and have done extensive research on this family and collected documents from my mother-in-law. I have corresponded with others of the broad Canary clan and they are not all related. It seems everyone is claiming the relationship to Calamity Jane if they are a Canary however, she does not belong to ALL of the clans. Her ancestors immigrated from Ireland however, I have lost the trail from there. I am quite confident in my research and feel my tree is as accurate as the documentation I have found to support it. Any correspondance is welcome regarding this line.

Done serious research on Calamity Jane's family since 1987.I can assure you,Calamity did NOT marry Wild Bill Hickock. Mythology. Cilus (Silas)Canary,Calamity's brother, did NOT die at Battle of the Little Big Horn. Check fatality lists online. No Canary or name close. Misinformation based on fraudulent ("Calamity Jane")Diary created by Jean Hickock McCormick who said she was daughter of Calamity & Wild Bill.NOT true.So far, no evidence that Calamity could read or write.Much evidence that McCormick was a fraud.

Hi joy
yes i do have a picture of amanda alice and john henry colegrove she is a very hard looking women and that might be where they think the native american comes from. but she is not or was not native american. I have alot on her and my mom and aunt both use to stay with her when they were young, they many times told me that she was a mean lady and poor ole john henry took her meaness, what was frowned upon was that one of the sibs was kinda loose, and slept around. and had two sons from that, I too have been told the same thing and that is why I started my search. If you want to check it out you can contact the vital records in ohio and get her birth and death certs, I have not done that but if you should please let me know they will have who her mom and dad where which was adison canary and margaret author, she had several bros and sis's, about 8 to 10, she was the mom of my granddad my mom's dad and they lived with them when my mom was young. hope this helps, but I have heard the native american and calamity relation thing also all my life I have not found anything that confirms that if you do please let me know I have not done a search in a while, and the marriage wasn't frowned upon adison didn't want her to marry john henry and john said he married her to make adison mad. this has been passed down thru all my aunts and uncles they have always laughed about it and made the same comments about it. which daughter are you talking about of amanda and johns what was her name lucassa? I think they had three I don't have my stuff in front of me but will get it.
Kim

Hello my name is Kim and I have done a lot of research on the family, amanda alice was not native american she was the daughter of addison and margaret arthur canary along with about 8 other kiddos, she married into my moms side of the family Colegrove, John Henry was her husband and my mom spoke of amanda alice and how they would go and visit her she lived very close to them. I don't have all of my info in front of me but I know I started this journey because my aunt said the same thing that there was native american in our family and calamity jane was a desendent which none of it has been found or proven, I have taken the search back to the 1600 and there is no where that shows any of that. I am sorry. my granddad was stewart colegrove start your search at the county records if your in Ohio that is where it all comes together. I have some stuff but have not done a search in a while. I would love it you would share any info you find just remember it has to be proven with records I have amanda alices place of buriel and lots of in on her. also go to the library in portsmouth they have a lot of info on ancestry thing. but your county records are the best sourse of info. please stay in touch.

swenson / Kenary - Glen Cove

I've hit a brick wall with my great-great grandfather, Augustus/Gus Swenson/Swinson/Swenson.

My great-grandmother, Anna Rose Swenson was born September 1896. Her mother Ann/Annie (Kenary) Swenson died shortly thereafter in childbirth. Anna Rose is listed on the 1900 census with her grandparents. 1900 census says her father was German, but others say Swedish!

Records are hard to come by for Nassau/Queens, NY where they lived at this point and there is no 1890 census so I cannot even see if they were married at this point.

Augustus and Annie had another daughter "Renie" who died as a child. I do not know if this was before or after Annie's death.

Anna Rose was raised by her grandparents, James and Mary Kenary in Glen Cove, NY.

Anna Rose married William Webb in the early 1920s.

I'm trying to find out obviously the DOB/DOM/DOD for Augustus Swenson and if there were any other children.

Looking For Kanary (Canary) / Unger Connection - Virginia / West VA

I'm looking for information on my grandfather's birth family. He was born Horace Unger in either 1895 (most likely), or 1893 in Richmond, Virginia. He was raised by his grandparents, William and Lucy Kanary (Canary) and later took their last name.

Family rumor says that his mother died in childbirth. I've found a marriage certificate for one of the Kanary daughters, Madeline (b. abt 1879 in Richmond) and John Unger (b. abt 1874 in Richmond to John W. & Adaline Unger). The marriage was performed in Richmond on July 24, 1895....four days before my grandfather was born, so I'm not certain that this is really his mother. I haven't found a birth record for my grandfather, or a death record for Madeline Kanary. Those records may be lost.

If anybody has information about these two families, I'd sure like to compare notes!

CANARY married widow Kate KEEBLE-- KY or IN circa 1840s

I'm looking for further information on the CANARY 2nd husband of Katherine "Kate" KEEBLE (maiden name unknown, 1st married name Keeble).

From the obituary of Kate Canary:
The Evening News (of Jeffersonville, Clark co, IN)
3 Aug 1899, front page
AGED Woman Stricken by the Unwelcome Visitor
At the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary Nixon, 423 Walnut street, last night at 10:30 o'clock, Mr. Katherine Canary breathed her last. She was a good, kind Christian woman and was 86 years of age. For many years she had lived in this city and had a large circle of friends. Her home for the past few years had been with her daughter.
Paralysis was the direct cause of Mrs. Canary's death and she had been sick for some time. She was married twice and leaves eight children, 14 great-grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Her own children are Jacob Keeble, Mrs. Maggie Kirkamp, Mrs. Lizzie Broy, Mrs. Kate Leclare, Mrs. Charles Blythe, Mrs. Mary Nixon, John Canary and Henry Canary.

Jacob Keeble's death certificate lists father as Lawrence Keeble, born Germany. Whoever gave that information did not know Jacob's mother's name or place of birth.
Kate KEEBLE CANARY is buried in the same family plot with her son Jacob and his wife Celia. The three share a large headstone, which lists the couple by their individual names but lists his mother as "Grandma Canary" rather than by name.

In summary:

Lawrence KEEBLE (born Germany?) married before 1837 to

Katherine "Kate" __?___ born circa 1810-1813 Germany (obit); died 4 Aug, 1899, Jeffersonville, Clark co IN; buried Eastern cemetery, Jeffersonville, Clark co, IN.

Katherine KEEBLE 2nd married to __?__ Canary.

Children of Katherine KEEBLE CANARY:
1) Jacob KEEBLE born 6 April 1837, KY (1880 census); married 15 Nov 1860 Jeffersonville, Clark co IN to Celia Ellen SINKHORN Sinkhorn, daughter of Phillip SINKHORN* and Frances “Frankie” TAYLOR*

2) Maggie ? born before 1846 KY; married __ KIRKAMP

3) Lizie ? born c1847 KY married ___ BROY; divorced by 1880 in Jeffersonville, Clark co, IN.

4) Kate ? married ___ LeClare

5) Bernice ? born 1851 IN; married Charles BLYTHE. [As a note, the wife of Jacob Keeble was not born in KY, she was born in Jeffersonville, Clark co, IN]. After Lawrence KEEBLE died, Kate remarried to CANARY.

I do not know if the daughters were KEEBLEs or CANARYs, yet.

Can anyone locate this family in earlier census records, please?

*direct ancestor of person posting message
