Irish Convict John CANAVAN - Roscommon?

I am trying to trace the Irish family of John CANAVAN (or CANOVAN) but have hit a 'brick wall'.

John was convicted in 1851 and sentenced to transportation to Australia. The trial took place in Roscommon - I believe it was the town of Roscommon not another location in that county. It's possible that John was from somewhere but committed his crime in Roscommon.

He was born c1829, was Catholic and a Shoemaker. Father James CANAVAN was also a Shoemaker. I have found 1 possible lead, a baptism in Roscommon in 1829, parents James CANAVAN and Mary CONLON. There is another baptism in 1832 for a daughter Brigid, but can't find any further info on this family.

Does anyone have information on either John or the Roscommon CANAVAN family?

Mr. Burke, Thank you so much for your message. I had been in contact with either you or one of your siblings several years ago about the fact that your mother had been engaged to John Canavan. I descend from John's sister, Delia/Bridget. My family and I traveled to Lahardane for the Commoration of the Sinking of the Titanic. I had just related John's story of being engaged to your mother and 24 hours later received your message! I was not aware they were engaged in 1912 and had a wedding date set. that was new information for me and I thank you for that. I hope that the ring and watch broach are in good hands and the story is passed along for many generations to come.
Regina Nau, Gilbertsville, PA reginanau@msn.com

Since it is Titanic Remembrance time (100 yr Anniver) I think of a Canavan connection that my Mother had in April of 1912. She (Margaret Roach of Cashel Turlough, Castlebar, Co Mayo) emigrated to Chester PA in 1910 and she met a young musician by the name of John Canavan and they became betrothed in 1912. They were to be wed in June of 1912. When John lost his brother, brother Pat Canavan and Cousin, Mary Canavan, on the Titanic he became dis-trout. My mother said they cancelled the wedding an "He died of a broken Heart". She kept the engagement ring and a watch broach as a memory of him.

She later met Stephen Burke of Doon Westport, Co Mayo. He was drafted into WW I and was badly wounded in France. They wed in 1920, after he recovered from his wounds that took about 18 months. they went on to have a successful life and had four sons (who served in WW II) and a daughter. I, Thomas Burke am the last remaining member of Steve and Nargaret's family.

Arther Harold Canavan was my father.. HIs brother was andrew Jackson Canavan and Walter was a half brother Thier father was William David Canavan and the mother wasGertrude DEO Canavan. Williams fathe was Andrew Jackson Canavan and mother was Susan( I think)! In reality you all have it wrong since William was illegally adopted be Andrew J when he was left in the middle of the town when he was about 6. His real father was named Gracen and was a drunk who never was charged since it was a commen thing for people to take in orphans back then. Andrew gave him the Canavan name so that he could go to school etc. William worked on the railroad for years and died in the 1950's from a stroke. I know cause I was 10 years old and went to his funeral held in Moravia. Gertrude lived for many years after that dieing in the 70's. Andrew died in the 80's and Arthur died a few years later. Andrew died of amssive heart attack and Arthur know as Harold died of a stroke. Gertrude also died of a stroke. I have looked at a lot of your post and most are not correct. Jenn Your grandfather had 6 kids that lived and a set of twins that were still born that were named Dean and Dawn.
Hi Frank. I actually found my family on the 1901 and 1911 Irish census last night after I posted this. I didn't realize those records were available but not on here. I googled and found them on an Irish site and right away found my grandfather as a 4yr old in 1901 in Wicklow and my grandmother as a 3 yr old in Cork. And it gave me all the brothers and sisters and parents ages. Great help.
www.census.nationalarchives.ie

There were also gravestones on line, pictures of them. I had found a few of the Canavans in the cemetery in Rathnew. I don't remember that site but try googling it.
I am reading the thread and not sure if I'm closely related to the Canavan's mentioned, but there must be some distant relation. My grandfather Patrick Canavan from Rathnew County Wicklow. His father Patrick and mother Maryann Roche. He had a brother Edward or Ned. And other brothers and sisters. Still lots of cousins there..

Hi Joanne,
I am doing a lot on the canavan side of my tree as its the main matriarchal lineage for me. Im interested in your John and Elizabeth Canavan. Do you have the birthdates or anything else? Please feel free to look and use anything you find that might be helpful to your search of the Canavans in my tree or anything I may be able to help you with. We all seem to be from a John Canavan born in 1796 in Wicklow Ireland, though in saying that John Canavan and Elizabeth Canavan names have a very long history in the canavan tree and sometimes its hard to find out which John or Elizabeth is which, lol.
There is a line of Canavans that Im trying to find in the USA, but I think they went to San Francisco.
Gary
PS I will send a link in next post

She married Captain John Smith in Cork in 1851.
The Richard A Canavan that I am looking for was married to Nettie Gordon and living in Brooklyn NY at the time of their daughter Martha's birth in 1884 (my grandmother). Richard was born 30 Aug 1855 and died 23 Sept 1897 at 42 years old.
He married Nettie Gordon on 10 Nov 1883. Martha married George Geddis in Howes Cavern in 1902. I think the Canavan family lived there at that time. Does any of this sound familar?
Please contact me at kennedy_cathleen@yahoo.com
Cathleen Geddis Kennedy

I can also see there are several Edward Canavans on the 1901/1911 census in Co. Wicklow.

Do you know what parish your grandfather was from? Or what year he was born? Any idea what his parents' names were?

These will help in tracing your family back further.

Shane

Thank you, John!!

This is what I know....my great grandfather was Bernard Canavin, Ireland (1862) probably Galway. Immigration records say he arrived in 1882. He was married to Catherine Agnes Coleman, from Concord, NH. I can only find Bernrd in NH when he married otherwise he is listed in Boston, which is where I was raised. Bernard and Catherine rasied their famly there. Both are buried in Boston.
LDS records show that Bernard's parents were john and Isabella (McCaffrey) Canavin, both born in Ireland. John was born abt 1835. I can follow a possible son, John who cam to US in 1892. He shows in the 1920 census and then married to Mary A. They live in Brookline and have atleast 5 children: Isabella V., John H., Margaret, Annie and Helen T. It makes sense that their is a connection with the names John and Isabella. The other piece of info that is interesting is that Catherine Coleman from NH had family at the time of their marriage in Worcester. That is that only way I can connect Canavin with Coleman.
If any of this makes any sense I would love to hear back from you. Thanks again---Laura

Hello, Regina.

It's been quite a while since I spoke to my cousin Gerry. He's been a lawyer in Washington since the early '80s. My cousin Rita, my uncle Harry's daughter, is the Lynam scholar in Wilmington and is on several Ancestry.com threads concerning family history.

If you can get to Wilmington, the Delaware Historical Society has a thick file, along with a book chapter, on the Lynams. In the book my great-grandmother (the Mangan or Manning) is called a gold-digger. My guess is that my g-grandfather was a charming man despite the 36 year age difference.

I've found items on Lynams in 19th century Delaware and Wilmington histories that a Google search turned up when I looked for an early James Lynam. What intrigued me was discovering that a branch of the family emigrated to Kentucky before the 1750s.

My e-mail is FRPALYNAM@aol.com. Send whatever questions you have to that box. When I figure out how to get Skype- connected I'll send that along. I live in East Lansdowne, PA, just outside Philadelphia.

Laura – I’m afraid i am not a true genealogist for I have not had the curiosity to trace the family back beyond the photographic watershed ( say 1890): i was just interested in piecing together old photographs , family hearsay and property and attempting to make sense of it and perhaps to get a convincing explanation of the family tensions that probably affect all families, but as land was so central to Irish families in the last two centuries, were so deep in Ireland, and the losers usually emigrated. It is true that i often wondered how the Canavans – a small huddle of them – came to be isolated in the Irish midlands with not an other relative in sight in the late nineteenth century. I have always heard it is a Galway name, with strong emigration links to Ulster and Scotland – and of course America. My own name, Bernard, has a non-Canavan root that would take too long to explain, but then i was surprised to find that there was a Bernard Canavan in Carton, Co Longford, in 1836, and another in 1883, and another in Cartongolan, Co Longford in the 1911 census, so it is obviously a name that has a resonance with them . Bernard is not a common Irish first name, but James is and there are plenty of James Canavans in that extended Longford cousinhood. I don’t know how many went to the US in the 19th century, but two went from Ballinalee, Co Longford in the early 1920s. The Argentine was another place they settled as part of a wave of south Longfordians in the 1880s. Don’t know if any of this fits into yor 'Bernard Canavan' ancestoral date. bernard

He was the son of John and Isabella Mccefry Canavin. He was born in Ireland abt. 1862. He married a Catherine Coleman from Concord, NH and they moved to the Boston, MA area. I think his family was in western MA at the time. I do not know if John or Isabella ever came to the US.
Hello Frank, So good to hear from you! I have done some research on PATRICK CANAVAN FROM WILMINGTON, as he is a brother to my Anthony Canavan. Your Patrick went to Scanton, PA when he came to the US and married Elizabeth. According to the information I have that had many children but it appears only 3 survived. They moved to DE in the late 1890's. I knew of the Lynam brothers marrying the Canavan sisters! In fact I was in touch with one of their daughters a few years back who lives in DE and maybe even the same house that she grew up in (doing this from memory). I would really like to communicate with you or Gerry. How can I get in touch?
Regina

The Patrick Canavan mentioned in the 1900 and 1920 US Census for Wilmington is my great-grandfather on my grand-mother Marcella's side. (Gerry Lynam will be better able to confirm whether my great-grandmother's maiden name was Mangan or not.) To make things Shakespearean, two Lynam brothers married two Canavan sisters. In 1982 my uncle Harry Lynam told me that the name was Manning and they were from Laherdaune (Laherdon was his spelling)in County Mayo.
When the 1920 Census taker was at the house he must've been distracted. My father Frank's birth date was April 1,1912 but he was listed as being born in 1913. This is scanty information but I hope it helps.
-- Frank

Eileen Cairns who is a McGrath researcher has her as coming from Aughamullan. Any chance anyone could tell us what part of the Cananvan family she is from? My family connection is through Terence and Catherine's son Patrick McGrath (m Sarah Hagan Clonoe 1874) his daughter Ellen McGrath (m James Cummings Coalisland 1905) her son Henry Cummings (m Mary Shields 1929 Clonoe) and finally my father Dermot Cummings b 1930 Killen.

Trying to trace relatives of Daniel and Ellen Canavan (brother and sister). They were born in County Wicklow Ireland and travelled to the USA around 1890. I believe they settled in the San Francisco area. Parents were Peter Canavan and Mary Carroll or Carral.
