Aguascalientes,Mexico. He died in Santa Rosa, Nuevo leon in 1958. Does anyone have information of any candela's from mexico. I do know there are candela/s from Odem, texas.

Not a word. Its a shame. He was so envolved in his research, became an authority, and was willing to share whatever information he uncovered.

All my contacts with him involved the surname "Nations." I wasn't aware of his interest in "Hinkle" as well.

I just learned that my grandfather Rosario D Candela born about 1891 in Salaparuta died 12/25/1939 in New Orleans. His parents were Philip and Jennie Candela and lived in Chicago. Rosario's obit does not mention his parents but does mention 2 sisters. Mrs Rose Cicchino and Mrs Rosaile Jeucois both of Chicago. Does anyone have any other information on this family?

My grandfather Rosario Candela had a brother Michael Candela b 1892 in Tunis (but really Montelepre, Sicily) they lived in Brooklyn. He died in 1952, and I believe had a son Michael born about 1930. There is one aunt left in Brooklyn a daughter of Mike's sister. Her name is Josephine Vitale. She may have an answer.

I have been looking into this family too. Go to the Farmington Mo library home page. There is a link to all the cemetaries. You can research all the Catholic ones, and I am sure yours are in that file. I have seen them.

The Candelas in New Orleans are pretty fully researched by Sy Serio. Google him w/ Candela. He lives in N Orleans. My Grandfather was Rosario Candela 1890-1953 (Wikipedia) from Montelepre. There was a Rosario in every other generation of his family back to 1700. Perhaps you are from one of his father's Cousins.

My grandpas name was John Candela!
He had a son Anthony Candela which is my dad!
Im pretty sure my grandma was Rosaly Candela to...
my aunts name is that as well!!!

Go to www.myspace.com/aquamaru and you will see my slide show. There's a picture of my father with my sister and I sitting at a dining room table. All of my family pics are in storage right now. That pic is from around 1962-1963. I look forward to hearing from you soon! He was born in New York at the same hospital as my mother. I believe it was Green Point but will have to check on that.

Wow! I never thought I would get any type of response. I know that my father had other children outside of his marriage to my mother. In fact, I think that they were all girls. I would love to see any pictures you have of him. My personal email address is candela_59@yahoo.com. It really sounds like this is the right man. That would make your mother my half-sister! Please let me know any specific info I could give you that would help confirm this. I'm sure I would recognize any picture of him. I have several pics of him as a child and young man. I know this might sound a little crazy but I didn't think it would hurt to ask. My mother's maiden name is Lillian Teresa Candela, she never got a chance to meet her father and there have been many secrets kept from her about the past. She has told me many stories about what she does know, Her father's name was Michael Leonard Candela Jr. His birthday was 10-29-1930, he was an only child, everything exactly like your post. I couldn't believe it when I was reading what you wrote. I know you are looking for information on his mother's maiden name but it would mean the world to her , if this is in fact a match. She has been looking for her family for so long. My mother was born in 1951,I'm more than sure she would be willing to tell you everything else she knows :) I haven't told her too much because I don't want to get her hopes up and have the wrong family. Looking Michael Candela's mother's maiden name

My father was Michael Leonard Candela DOB: 10-29-1930. His father's name was Michael Candela. The only info I have on his mother is that her first name was Angelina with a possible maiden name of Peccorella; and that she died sometime between his 3rd week and 3rd month of life due to some type of infection. I hoping to get her full name and of course date of birth. Actually, I'm looking for any and all info I can get on her.

His father remarried a woman named Gilda. They lived in New York. My father was an only child.

I would appreciate any information on Angelina. I have just hit a brick wall on this end of my research. Thanks!

I don't know if you will ever see this post but here goes. My grandfather (who died before I was born) was Salvatore Candela from Sicily...I think Toretta but I might be wrong. He had 4 children in the US. Rosaria, Sebastiana, Charlie and Antonio. If you revisit the site and have any information please contact me. We went to Sicily a few years ago but never went to my grandfather's home town.

I appreciate your response to my query. I've been doing quite a lot of searching and have come to the conclusion that this is my 'Pop's' way of making me pazzo from the other side. (LOL) What I have confirmed is that my Grandfather's name was Antonino. I also saw the 1920 passenger list where I believe your Pietro come over on and it also has my father's cousin on the same ship. His name was Rosolino Finazzo. On arrival both of these men went to the same address in Philadelphia (821 Christian St) which I understand was a bank/agent) My father also went to this address on his arrival, however he didn't enter thru Ellis Island but thru Bayonne NJ...about a year and a half later. I checked other Candelas and many of them used the same agent/address on their arrival. To compound the confusion, both Pietro's have/had a sister named Anna. The only thing I know for sure that was diffferent between these 2 Pietro's was that my Father was born in 1900 and the other was born in 1893/4(according to the age on the manifest) and my father's house was blue. DUH! I know this sounds silly but I remember him saying this as though it were the only blue house there. He and his sister also owned lemon groves. If I were a few years younger I'd hightail over there and straighten out this confusion, especially since my father went back to Sicily to be with his sister when he died. Now I'm trying to locate his grave in 'the fisherman's cemetery' which I've been told is part of the main cemetery "Villa Cemetery" but except that it's on Via Villa, I've hit another brick wall. sigh.........

My grandfather was Rosolino Candela. He was born in 1906 in Carini, Sicily. His oldest brother was named Pietro Candela. Pietro came to the US in 1920, but I understand he did not marry. My great grandfather died of a stroke working on a lemon orchard. We think his name was Rosolino. He had three sons, and according to tradition, Pietro would have been named after his paternal grandfather. The second son, Giuseppe, would have been named after his maternal grandfather. This would mean it would be possible for my grandfather to be named after his father. There is also another custom in Italy, that if two grandchildren are born named after the same grandfather, something might happen to one of the grandchildren. For this reason it was permitted to not name the first born after the paternal grandparent.

Another 'rare' Candela

My Father was Pietro Candela and came to the US in 1921 from Carini Sicily. So far I haven't been able to find any relatives, but that may be because all of his sibs died, except a half-sister, but since I don't know if their mutual parent was father or mother I'm stumped on how to go on.

The only hint I have about his parents is the Name of my oldest brother, Anthony, since it seems to be tradional that the child be named after the grandfather.

Anyone got any ideas on where to go from here?

My grandfather, Jose Maria Delgado died in 1954 at age 96. On his death certificate, his mother's maiden name was Candelas. That is the only information I have, I am searching for anything I can find, first name, birth place, year, anything.

Thanks for your response. Peter Canepa was the older brother of my grandmother Carmela Canepa. I remember him when I was a kid as he made the best "Orangini". He died in 1981 at the age of 93 and is buried in a large Canepa plot at St. John's Cemetery in Middle Village, NY along with his father and mother. Two of his sisters are still alive. I never met Vita, however, my father told me that she was related to a famous & very talented architect. The Canepas that you mentioned in your message are relatives but I have never met them. I am very interested in learning more about Rosario and would greatly appreciate copies of the articles about him. I also have the Canepa line mapped out if you are interested in that. My birth mother is (was?) Josephine Candela. I never met her and don't know very much about her, other than the fact that she was a dancer and lived in the Greater Los Angeles vicinity. I believe that she lived in California about 20 years ago and may still very well be here.

I believe that she had 6 other children. Also, her father's name was Bernard.

Thank you for emailing me back. To be honest I don't know exactly where San Giuseppi is in Sicily and I tried finding it but have to busy as of late to further looking. My cousin Frank here in Rochester told me my grandafather and his father are from there. My great grandparents lived all there life in Sicily and died there. They never came to America. I will check my grandfather's death certificate as soon as I can get to the department here where I live.

Yes the names sound familiar. there is a Frank Candela family living in NY on 101st street in 1920. My grandfather had a brother Frank, and a sister Vita. get the death certificate from the s tate for Vito. ten dollars well spent

I would be glad to give you some info in Rosie if you wish. There are no books about him, but I have several articles that discuss his work, first as architect then as a cryptographer during ww2. If you knew Vita your over 80, she died in 1933, but I dont know how. She is buried next to Rosarios parents and a brother in Calvery Cem in Brooklyn. Just this last two weeks I have been contacted by another Pete Canepa, her grandson in California. I also know Mrs. Alfred Canepa. Let me know your address.

I just stumbled across this site and am fascinated by it. My father was Philip Anthony Candela and was born in Syracus, NY. He had brothers Joe, Tom, and Pete and at least one sister, Anna. My father married my mom Rita H. LaKoske in Detroit and lived there until his death. I have eleven siblings: Marcella, Diane, Anthony, Christine, Patricia, Joanne, Mary, Victor, Michael, Stephen, Laura. I have more information on the family history at home, going back I think to my dad's grandfather who was born in Sicily. I am at work now, but will bring the info with me next week and post it here in case it can help anyone.
