Hi Carol. I just found your Ancestry posting of nearly a year ago. My husband is a grandson of Mary Hardie Adams. I would like to know more about your family. We have visited Orleans cemetery looking fo gravesites. It has been unsuccessful with regard to Florence St Onge. Please get in touch so that we can share. smrogers5560@hotmail.com
Marguerite Rogers

Candlish in Jeannette, PA

I am looking for more information on a few relatives. John W. Candlish and his wife Sarah along with their daughter Sarah are the three in question. I am looking for any death and burial information for the mother and father. As for the daughter, I am looking to find out who/when she married and then any children she may have had. The family immigrated from Sunderland, England and the mother and father appear with a son, Edward on the 1900 census. I have been able to follow Edward all the way through. Sarah doesn't show up on the census as living with the family in 1900. I think she must have been married by then. I know she is still alive in 1957 because she sent flowers to my great grandfather's funeral. However, it doesn't list her last name. It just says his "sister Sarah and family." Any information anyone may have would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Marilyn
Thanks for replying. I posted my message when I first started my research into my family. In fact I had no knowledge of her.I have since learned that my aunt Louise Bertha remarried and had a daughter. I assume that Her and Albert went their seperate ways.I know very little about her other than she died in England in 1990.I would be very interested to know if you have any other information as I would like to piece together the little bits that I have found.
Regards
Kay

The son, Charles that you speak of was the 11th child and I have his birthdate as 3 Jan 1807 (just off one day). Hairry's granddaughter, was my g-grandmother, Emeline Candlish who married John W.
Hi,

The Candlish family I was looking for information for is likely the ancestor of my son in law who lives in Whitehorse YT.
He has a Hairry Candlish 1761 Dalrymple, Scotland.
His son Charles Candlish was born 02 Mar 1807 in Blairbowie, Ayr, Scotland. He died 1882 in Quebec.
In the 1881 census the children of his daughter Eliza Jane Candlish married to John Hardie are living with Charles and his wife Eliza Adams. Both John Hardie and Eliza Jane have died.
Their youngest child Charles Hardie, married Mary North and had 6 children. Their child also Charles Hardie m. Florence Noseworthy in 1900 and they had two sons William and David. William died age 52 while crossing the street in Edmonton, alberta, Dave is still alive and lives in Whitehorse. My son in law is the second child and second son of William(Bill) Hardie. He was born in Whitehorse in 1955. I think you must descend from the oldest brother(Henry) of Eliza Jane Candlish who married John Hardie.

Someone has put up a lot of Candlish information on the internet. You just have to put in Hairry Candlish or McCandlish and her wedsite comes up. Margeurite Rogers of the Ottawa area also has done a lot of research. This is her husbands line.

cheers,
Arlene

Hi Arlene: Recently, while going thru the messages for Candlish/McCandlish from Scotland to Canada, I came upon yours. I hope that this is not been too long a time span for you to reply to. My g-grandmother was Emeline Candlish, sister to Charles Candlish of Quebec, Canada. I have names, dates and places which I will share with you if you contact me. If this is the correct Charles Candlish, was born in Montreal in 1863; however, his father was Henry McCandlish of Mauchline, Ayr, Scotland. Looking forward to hearing from you!
Mike,

My brother has been researching the Candlish family and sent us (his sibs) the results, which I'll copy here:

Beginning at the earliest records currently available to date:

John Graham(born about 1750), married to Mary McWhirr (also born about 1750) both from Scotland, had a daughter Elizabeth Graham (born in 1773) and who died on February 16, 1861 in Palnackie Buittle, Scotland.

Elizabeth Graham married James Candlish (born 1771) and together they had a son, James Candlish, born around 1811, in Scotland.

James (the son) became a fisherman, marrying Margaret Parkinson, born in1806, She died in 1891 after bearing the following children:

·	Richard born 1831
·	James born 1833
·	William born 1836
·	Alexander born 1848 in Lytham, St Cuthbert parish, Lancashire, England

The first three children were born in Scotland

At some time prior to 1841, James and Margaret settled into 369 Pleasant St. #4 in Lytham, a small village in Lancashire, England.

James III, also became a fisherman and married Hannah D. (last name unknown) but she was born around 1832. They continued living in Lytham, where Hannah had been born (Longridge). They lived on 131 Clifton Street in Lytham and had a son, John, born in 1857. James III apparently died as John was living with his mother, Hannah at 34 Westly St. in Lytham by 1871, where she was a lodging house keeper.

In 1881 John married Margaret, who had been born in 1856 and he became a “joiner” or carpenter who constructs the wooden components of buildings. Margaret had been born in Croston and in 1881 they were living at 17 Barton St, Barrow (Salthouse). She gave birth to their son, Arthur on November 9, 1881. Margaret apparently died in Preston, England in 1886 at the age of 29.

John, in the summer of 1887 married Selina Emily Goddard.

Goddard Family:

Phoebe J. born about 1825 in Gillingham, Kent married (presumably) and was widowed by a man named Goddard (his first name and origins are as yet, unknown). Eventually Phoebe was widowed with 5 daughters:

·	Selina Emily born about 1853 in Hull (or Hall) Yorkshire
·	Ruth M.A. (Mary Ann?) born about 1861 in Aldershot, Hampshire
·	Isabella M. born about 1864 in Aldershot, Hampshire
·	Susan J. born about 1866 in Aldershot, Hampshire
·	Millie R. born about 1869 in Fishwick, Borough of Preston, Lancashire

By 1881, Phoebe had been widowed and was living with her 5 daughters at 13 Gladstone St, in Fishwick. Isabella and Selina were worsted Heald Knitters in the textile industry while Molly, Ruth and Susan were cotton weavers. Heald Knitters operated machines which produced jerseys and worsted is fine spun wool

John and Selina went on to have two daughters together:
·	Florence Hannah (“Florrie”) born August 17, 1889
·	Ada Lena born in 1895

In 1891 they were living at 103 Porter Street in Preston (Fishwick) with Arthur and Florence, but by 1901 they were living at 16 Alfred Street, Preston with all 3 children and Arthur has become a cotton weaver.

On April 23, 1903 John Candlish arrived in New York having sailed from Liverpool on Cunard’s S.S. Aurania. He had $40 on him and declared that he had not been in prison or the almshouse, was in good health and not a polygamist. He also had no job but was to join his brother-in-law, John Arthur Parnaby who lived at 17 North 11th Street in Taftville, Connecticut. (John Parnaby was married to Selina’s younger sister, Millie.)

On October 8, 1903 Selina arrived with Florence and Ada on the same S.S. Aurania with $15 on her in order to join her husband. John and Selina moved into 15 North A Street in Taftville and he began work as a carpenter at the Ponemah Mills in Norwich. As of 2008, Ponemah Mills is being developed into “luxury” lofts thus the building remains – a huge 19th century brick structure. John & Selina became naturalized in New London on October 3, 1911.

Arthur emigrated arriving on August 28, 1904 on the S.S. Campania, his fare having been paid by his parents. In 1911 Arthur was naturalized as a US citizen and in 1912 returned to England, at which point, he presumably married Alice (Ellen) Gardner, who had been born in April/May/June 1885 in Preston. (There were several Ellen Gardners from Preston but it seems most likely that Alice Ellen Gardner married Arthur as her 2 sisters were as cotton Heald knitters in the textile industry and they resided at 55 Porter St, whereas the Candlish family had lived at 103 Porter.) They arrived in New York on the SS Mauretania on July 28, 1912. They must have been keenly aware as they crossed the North Atlantic from Liverpool to New York of the Titanic sinking which had occurred only 3 months earlier.

They eventually moved to 167 North Main Street in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and may also have lived in Michigan. On May 1, 1915 they sailed together for England on the Lusitania with the intention of visiting Ellen’s family. They never arrived as the Lusitania was shelled by German U-boats off the coast of Ireland and sank in 18 minutes with over 1,000 lives lost. Ellen survived but Arthur did not, and his body was never recovered. She apparently returned to the US on September 30, 1915 and located at 4903 5th Avenue in Brooklyn. When Cunard settled claims relating to the disaster in 1924, Ellen received slightly over $10,000 – a considerable sum in 1924. What happened to her after that I have yet to discover.

#######################

In an earlier email, he noted that "She was born in Preston in Apr-May-June 1885. There seems to be another Ellen Candlish I am contending with who was born in 1891 – I think she was the stewardess on the ships and seems to have disappeared as well." He also noted that "When she returned to the US on the SS Orduna on 9/30/1915 she gave her address as: 4903 5th Ave, Brooklyn, which appears to be an apartment building. Can you locate some directories from about that time period which might indicate whether she was living there or not."

#######################

So far I've not been able to find the relevant directories online but they seem to be available at the NY State Library in Albany, which is about 2 hours from me--so I may go up there to see what I can find out.

Also, I do have a picture of Arthur I'd be happy to email you but not, alas, one of Ellen (I don't think--I'll have to double-check the album I have).

Hope this is not too much information!

Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth

According to my friend- she apparently traveled back and forth between England and NY. Supposedly at one point as a stewardess. She disappears after the 30s.

Mike
PS Any sign of finding pics of her and her husband?

Hi,

It's been a while since this posting, but I'm hoping to reach Paul Edward Candlish--are you related to Ellen and Arthur Candlish? We've been wondering what happened to her after Arthur died on the Lusitania.

Best regards,

Elizabeth Jewell

Candlish family of Montreal, Quebec

I am researching the Charles Candlish family farmer of Longuiel and Chambly, Quebec. Charles was born in Scotland and I think in Scotland the name was McCandlish.
Would like to hear from anyone searching this line. One of the daughters married a Hardie(Hardy). In the 1881 census all the Hardie children are living with Charles and his wife Eliza. There are I believe 3 sons found from looking at the 1901 census. Henry b. 1832, james b. 1838 and William b. 1839. James and William were born in Quebec.

I am now back on line and I found your message re-James Candlish born in 1858 Tarbolton Ayrshire . I have a relative in fact a First Cousin Twice Removed born 30th May of that year to a Henry Candlish and Margaret Drennan married in 30 November 1855 .
Perhaps you could advise me if this is your James Candlish in which case I would appreciate any further information on the family concerned and I would be willing to expand on what I have on record at this time .

a.s.c.

Hi - I have a note that Matthew & Ann had a daughter Mary Ann christened 7 April 1806 at Whitehaven, Cumberland UK. I have no details of a son & no record of where I got the info from.
Sorry.

Separately I have:

Anthony Candlish married ? with a son called William Edgar Candlish born abt 1851. This son William Edgar had married ?, and then subsequently married Selena Starling in 1899 at All Saints, in Liverpool.

Also I have William Edgar Candlish born abt 1850 at Liverpool, married to Elizabeth Alderson born Llainolloes, Wales abt 1841. They married 10 Oct 1880 at Kirkdale, Liverpool. I wonder if this was the first marriage referred to above but have no proof.

Does any of this sound like your families?
I would appreciate any info you have.

Fiona,
I have been e-mailing a gentleman named Candlish who lives in Clitheroe, Lancashire UK. He was born in Scotland. He has not talked of his family. Only mention was that he abhors violence because of something that happened when he was a child. I am going to be going to Uk to visit him in MArch or April. I know that is a long time to wait for info, but if I can find a way to ask him questions I will. Could be I might send him copies of you messages, but need to obtain more ink for the printer first. Please advise. Chris
