Hello Betty, I am a descendant of William Edward Candy, in fact I am his great great grandaughter. I went to Australia in 2009 to do some research, went to Stawell where he had his Hotel and where some of the family are buried. I would love to hear what information you have on them.

My tree is fairly well defined back to the 1700s, except for the Candy part which is a bit chaotic and needs more work. You are welcome to take a look at it. I guess we are probably cousins!

Hi I have a family tree with Candy, my grandfather was a Candy, and they came from Hampshire England.Some of them born in Southampton and St Marys I believe. All through the Candy family are men named Henry.Take a look at my tree its got a few names. I hope it helps.

Don't know anything about Henry Lyall Stawell Candy, but my great uncle Frederick James Candy emigrated from Cardiff, South Wales to South Africa in 1921.There are rumours in the family that he went onto being a Commisioner in the South African Police although he initially worked in a gold mine.

Just wondering if there might have been a link with your Candy before he went out there, as I know very little about his family except for his siblings

This Henry is the son of Henry Stawell Candy who was born in Stawell,
Victoria, Australia, in 1880. His Mother was Vida Bell Roberts. He is
descended from William Edward Candy from Truro, Cornwall who migrated to
Adelaide, South Australia in 1840. I have heaps of info about the family
but nothing about you Henry. Henry the father died at sea between Rhodesia
(Zimbabwe) and Australia in 1955. Did Henry the son return to Cornwall?

William Henry Candy's two nephews and one niece later followed him to
Australia.

Death of Mrs. Thomas Candy -- 1889

Taken from the Cherokee Advocate, Oklahoma, 10 July 1889

It is with regret that we are called upon to chronicle the death of Mrs. Thomas Candy who died at the residence of Mrs.Greese in this place on Sunday evening last after an illness of some time, with that dread disease consumption. She received all the attention that could possibly be given her, but it seemed that nothing would relieve her, until death came and closed her sufferings. She leaves a husband and two children to mourn her loss. She was buried at Park Hill Monday evening surrounded by many relatives and friends.

Frederick Candy b 1859 Shepton Mallett, Somerset

I an trying to trace the 1881 UK census of Frederick Candy who was born in Shepton Mallett, Somerset in 1859. Brought up in the Frome Union Workhouse, in 1871 he was boarding with the Williams family in Pilton.
In 1887 he married Charlotte Mary Roberts in Cardiff Wales. I have spent many hours trawling various 1881 census and have even used the wild card but with no success.
I am hoping that someone researching the Candys may have come across him.

The Uncle of the three Candy siblings who migrated to Australia landed in Adelaide in 1840. He wa William Candy who later moved to Victoria.

Hi, re possibly being on the wrong board (your message keeps popping up on my email for me to reply!) I would assume that the Candys from Wiltshire are a different line to the ones in Cornwall, unless we are talking about the original Candys/Condes etc who I believe were French, some of Huguenot origin. I can email you a little bit of this early history if you wish.

I have also been researching a "Miles Candy" (The name later became "Canady" but in the 1880 Census, it's "Candy" and there is a large number of Candys at Long Acre in the 1880 Census). My "Miles Candy" was born c. 1848. His wife Susan B. Alligood was born c. 1850. In 1880 they lived at Long Acre and had three children at the time. He was a farmer. His immediate neighbors were Candys and Alligoods.

My ancestor, Ann WEST, was his servant and housekeeper from 1841 census to that of 1871. I am writing up my family history and would appreciate any biographical notes you have of 'John Henry' to set the scene.

Candy Family in S Africa

I believe my great uncle Frederick James Candy born Cardiff in Nov 1895 may have emigrated to S. Africa around the time of the First World War. His parents were Frederick Candy and Charlotte Roberts
The last possible record I have of him is from Sept 1926 when he returned to the UK as his brother James was terminally ill. According to the record his permanent residence when leaving the UK would be in other parts of British Empire than the UK.
The address given on arrival was Delville Wood Mem Com, South Africa House,Trafalga Sq, London. I am aware that Delville Wood commemorates the sinking of the SS Mendi + Darro, troop ships in WW1.
I do not know if he married. As SA records are almost inpossible to obtain, any information would be appreciated. Carolyn

Paul - I have only just found this site so hope you see this. My family all come from the Breamore area, in fact I lived there until the age of 14. My grandfather was Frank Candy, b. 1871 and was, I think a great grandson of Mary Downer.

my ealiest Candy is Edward Candy born 1755 ish lived and was married in Breamore Hampshire to jane West in 1785 also married before this to mary Downer 1779 who died of smallpox with two children not sure if this helps

My lot seem to all come from the South Stoneham area of Southampton and I can trace them back to 1777ish. Maybe if we traded a few ancestor names and dates we could find a match somewhere as it isn't a very common name.
