Dr . Canepa, Italy-1884 - Died from Cholera

Giving Up a Cholera Patient too Early.
Cases of cholera patients who, having reached the algide stage, have been given over as dead while perfectly capable of recovery, have (the Lancet says not been unfrequent in the last visitation in Italy. The following is a well-authenticated instance: Dr. Canepa, a physician in Benoa, was attacked with cholera, and before remedial measures could take- effect passed rapidly into the algide stage, and to ail outward seeming ceased to live. His death was announced by the practitioner in attendance, and his family had performed the last offices, pending those of the undertaker, whose arrival they were awaiting in a room adjoining that in which the body of Dr. Canepa, recently covered with a white sheet, was lying. Suddenly the door between the two chambers was seen to open, and the ghastly figure of Dr. Canepa, arrayed in burial vesture, presented itself to the thunderstruck family. In a feeble, scarcely audible voice he complained of having been left so long without attendance (six hours, in fact, have elapsed since he was given up and laid out as dead). He was immediately replaced in bed and every restorative practiced on him till a physician could be obtained to perform Pacini's oper-. ation of hypoder mo'clysis. But in vain. The assistance which "might have been effective some hours previously arrived too late.
Sacramento Daily Union, Volume 52, Number 71, 15 November 1884

Died After Lingering Illness

James Canepa, better known as Jim Bruce, who for several years past has been a frequent visitor to this and other towns, raffling off everything from pillow cushons to turkeys, passed away at his home in Sutter Creek on Friday last, after a lingering illness.

Canepa was caved upon in the Oneida mine many years ago, and at the time was not expected to recover from the ordeal through which he had passed. With a strong constitution and the best of medical attention, he managed to survive the accident, and although his entire lower extremities from his stomach down were paralyzed, he managed to make a living for himself by driving about the streets and disposing of raffle tickets.

The remains were interred in the Sutter Creek cemetery on Monday last.

Amador Ledger, 19 May 1911

Cilppled For Life.

About 3 o'clock last Sunday afternoon, James Canepa, a miner employed by the Oneida Co., met with an accident that in all probability will maim him for life. He and his mining partner were stoping t|t the time the accident occurred,' Canepa being pn his knees using the pick. The ground above them gave way and the injured man was hit between the shoulders the concussion breaking a vertebra of his backbone. His partner escaped without injury. Dr. A. M. Canepa is a single man, aged between 25 and 30, and lives in Sutter Creek.

Amador Ledger, Volume 1901, Number 10, 10 May 1901
Josephine here,
I am so excited at the thought of receiving pictures of the Canepa family. I am investigating the family tree for my niece Armeda Reade. Armeda is the daughter of Cecil Gordon “ Gordie “ Reade. Unfortunately Gordie died at the early age of 50 yrs. of bladder cancer. His father was Albert Cecil Reade “ Cecil “ ( a trait in this family seems to be that they name the children, and then call him by their middle name “ Cecil was the first child of Walter Reade and Alice Maud Canepa.
My sister Betty Reade and her daughter Armeda are visiting us in Kingston, Ontario, Can. on Tuesday. Betty lives in Oakville Ont. and Armeda in Burlington Ont. an hours drive from Oakville and about 4 hours drive from me. Betty is going to bring the only picture she has of Alice. Gordie is in the picture with her as he visited them quite often. Betty can remember her mother – in- law Kay ( Kathleen Anderson ) speaking of a letter that accompanied the picture. Alice noted the fact that Gordie was wearing a pair of kid gloves. Gord told of being a young boy getting on the train in Vancouver going to visit his grandparents in Cranbrook .
I am going to get some info collected and sent off to you.
Anxiously awaiting to hear from you.
Josie
I hope this goes through

I just found this after my brother told me about it. There were two brothers, Ignazio and Frank Canepa who came to U.S. around the time you are talking about and they were indeed from Sferracavallo. We still have family there today. Ignazio was my grandfather. Frank, my great uncle, has a son, also, Frank, who moved to Oregon many years ago. His wife was Jessie. It all sure seems to fit. Let me know if you receive this.
