I am searching for info on William Canfield, originally from Kansas. He and his brother Elmer owned a ranch there.
William married Angeline Crossetiere, and they moved to Michigan to be closer to Angeline's family in Canada.
William was born in 1887. He and his wife had 3 children, "Joe", Mary Jean, and my granfather, Thomas. Thomas
moved to New Orleans, and married my grandmother, Leatrice Steinfels. That's all I know of that side of my family.
Any information would be helpful. Would love to be in contact with family on that side!

She was born in Dekalb County MO, May 8th 1892, married to Edward Reid in 1914 (mar 17) and died in 1971 . Three daughters, Mildred Zuk, Fern Jones and Lois Marsh. 4 grandsons, Jim and Clay Marsh and Jay and Gary Jones, a granddaughter Paula Zuk. Found letters, photos and newspaper obits, handwritten song(?) at a yard sale. Would like to know if any family is interested in these. Am not looking to make money, just think family things belong with family. Please email with more info (so I can check with what I have to make sure it goes to the right family), and I'll send it to where it belongs. Thank you.
Michelle
Our Family bible shows her father as Jeptha Vinding Canfield, married to Martha Adline Vann, with 5 children, C.V.,Gertrude,C.A., Nellie Elizabeth, and C.E. Douglas. I am trying to find out if this is correct and why the childrens name is Douglas and not Canfield

I have found a book that describes the brothers Thomas, and Matthew Canfield. It mentions Nathaniel Canfield which little is known about him so if anybody has info on him I'd be very interested. It describes the various spellings of the Canfield name and Coats of Arms. I haven't finished it yet but comes with pictures and all kinds of good stuff on our families. I will invite anyone to my tree for what info I have been adding on the Canfield line and if you have info to add, correct, or would like me to send a copy of the book to you via email please contatct me. This is such an interesting family line and I just wish my Father, John Milton Canfield were here to see this amazing find.

ozarkianroadkill@comcast.net

Connie Gray (Canfield/Fondren)

Josiah Canfield

Josiah Canfield appears on Averill B. Canfield's family tree chart drawn in the mid to late 1800's as son of a Timothy Canfield, grandson of Nathaniel Canfield. Averill B. thought Nathaniel was an immigrant and was of Norwalk, Conn. Frederick A. Canfield said in the "Rose Canfield Genealogical Collection" that "Some Timothy was the father of Joseph, David & Josiah."

Who was the "some Timothy" and was the family tree chart drawn by Averill B. Canfield Frederick A. Canfield's source for Josiah's ancestry?

It is well known that Timothy, son of Ebenezer & Mary (Hennery) was born 16 Sept. 1701 and his wife Keziah Ferris (who he married 19 Nov. 1929 in Greenwich, Conn.) were the parents of 7 children, all recorded in the vital records of Ridgefield, Conn.

Josiah, David and Joseph do NOT appear as children of any Timothy Canfield that is currently known in Connecticut (and that is where Josiah alledgedly came from) so how did anyone who claims to be descended from Josiah determine his ancestry? Various ancestry charts & genealogies say he born between 1720-1725 but there again he does not appear in the Connecticut vital records.

Accurately citing sources and documentation would be most appreciated.

I am searching for the descendants of Dwight Reuben Canfield, author of "Four Families in the Black Swamp". I have the names of his children, but not grandchildren or any living descendants. Dwight is my GG-granduncle. I own a copy of his book, and upon reviewing it, I have found that he owned some unusual items such as a photo of Christian McIntyre that I would like to have a copy of to share with other McIntyre's who are descended from Christian.

I have been studying my family genealogy for a little over a year now, and have lots of info to add to Dwight's book. Also, together with the help of Diane Marshall, we have untagled the puzzle of the old McIntyre Family Bible that Dwight writes about in his book. I also have loads of information on the Canfield side. Dwight talks about Averill Canfield's family tree which I now own a copy of. If you are a descendant of Dwight, please contact me so that I can share some pertinent information about his book and maybe find out who has a copy of Christian's photo.

Thanks so much!
-Marjorie :)

In all census records except 1880, he is shown as living with his wife Sarah and on the 1850 and 1855, his son Myron C Canfield also lives with the family. In all the census records, he indicates his birthplace as NY.

On the 1860 census, Aaron is living close to Fidelia Tuttle, the widow of Jeremiah Canfield, who died abt 1857 in WI. They were living not far from each other, also in the 1855 census.

I don't know who Aaron's parents were. I suspect there is some sort of a connection between Aaron Canfield and Jeremiah Canfield (who is my 3x ggrandfather). I've not been able to locate Jeremiah's parents, siblings etc, either.

Hopefully someone on this list might be able to shed some light!

regards,

Colleen Lill

Andrew Canfield Jr and Lorana Gaylord

I am a descendant of the Thomas line that went from CT to PA to Iowa, and I have lots of Canfield data but am searching for information about Lorana Gaylord, wife of Andrew Canfield Jr (she born PA about 1809 and died Marshalltown IA in the 1880's). I can't link her to any Gaylord parents, though there are lots of them in PA. Please help me if you have any data. I also have info on our Canfield background in England and in France. We are from the town called Canville in Normandy, France, close to St.Mere-Eglise in the Department de la Manche. Our family's ancient castle, the Chateau d'Ollonde, is still partially there (it was built in the 900's). Our Viking Norman ancestors came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066 and the de Canvilles are listed on the Roll of Battle Abbey. Over time, Norman names ending in -ville (town) transformed themselves into the English "field" sound - so (de)Canville becomes Canfield, d'Urbeville becomes Durbeyfield, etc. The family name goes through various spellings - one ancestor, Sir Richard de Camville of Coventry, England, was the Admiral of Richard the Lionhearted's fleet in the Third Crusade and also served as the justiciar (chief administrator) of the Crusader-captured island of Cyprus. When he returned home, he built Coombe Abbey just outside of Coventry, of which there are some interesting parts still remaining (in a county park). The deCanvilles intermarried with Plantagenet royalty (Idoine de Canville married William Longspee II, the grandson of Henry II, who was the first person buried in Salisbury Cathedral). By the time of the Puritan Migration, the family had been pretty much 'demoted' by the Wars of the Roses, and were gentry instead of nobility. However, Thomas and Matthew Canfield, our brother-ancestors who first came to America, were referred to as "Mr." - a sign of high social standing. Most ordinary people were called "Goodman".

I'm looking for a male Canfield who is a descendant of Andrew Canfield, Justus, Fairchild, Charles C., Andrew Nahum or other male Canfields in that line from Marshalltown, Iowa (in the mid to late 1800's).and Middletown, Susquehanna Co, PA in the early 1800's, who would be in my father's DNA lineage. I have no living close male Canfield relatives, and would so much like to know where our family wandered as they migrated across Europe in prehistoric times. I would pay for the test: it only tests for the Y chromosome, is a cheek swab (no pain!) and cannot be used for any other purpose. If any of you are out there, would you contact me - whether or not you want to be tested? because I'd like to know you. Thanks so much!
Eliza Jane (Canfield) Kendall Scudder 1859-1914

Eliza Jane Canfield
M1 Herbert Kendall M2 Doremus Scudder
Parents Lee and Mary ( -- ) Canfield
Sparta Herald (WI) 14July1914
Mrs. Doremus Scudder
A copy of the Pacific Commercial Advertiser, Honolulu, Hawaii, June 27, gives particulars of the death of Mrs. Scudder, nee Eliza Canfield, which occurred June 26. The paper states:
Death came yesterday afternoon at three o’clock, after an acute illness of six weeks, to Mrs. Doremus Scudder, wife of Rev. Doctor Scudder, pastor of the Central Union Church. The fact that Mrs. Scudder had been seriously ill was not generally known, and the news of the death of this very well known and much liked woman will come as a shock to Honolulu generally.
The remains are to be cremated and the ashes sent for interment to the family plot at Winchester, Massachusetts, where lie the remains of Doctor and Mrs. Scudder’s children. A memorial service will be held in Central Union Church tomorrow afternoon at four o’clock, with Rev. A. A. Ebersole in charge.
Mrs. Scudder, whose maiden name was Eliza Jane Canfield, was born at Angelo, Wisconsin, June 17, 1859. Her early years were spent on the farm of her father until he moved to Sparta, Wisconsin, becoming one of the leading spirits of the place.
After being graduated from high school she entered Vassar College, in the class of 1884, being the first girl of her section to go to an Eastern college. The death of her mother cut short her course before graduation.
She was married in 1882 to Dr. Herbert Kendall who died in 1885.
Two years later she went to Japan, as a missionary, at her own expense. Stationed at Niigata, the farthest frontier station in the mission, she met Dr. Scudder, serving as a medical missionary for the American Board, who, with his sister, had been in Japan since 1885. On June 21st 1888 she and Dr. Scudder were married and towards the close of the following year serious sickness in the family called them back to America.
Here her life as a pastor’s wife began, with ministries in Chicago, Brooklyn, Woburn Massachusetts and finally Honolulu.
Kendall - Canfield marriage 1882 Sparta WI

Sparta Herald (WI) 11Apr1882
Marital: Canfield – Kendall
A quiet home wedding took place at the residence of the bride, in this city, last Wednesday evening, the parties being Dr. Herbert Kendall and Miss Eliza Canfield, of Sparta. Only relatives and intimate friends were present, there being enough of those, however, to make quite a throng. Rev. Geo. F. Hunting perhformed the ceremony, and after the usual post-nuptial congratulations, etc., the pair departed for the westbound train, intending to visit the home of the groom’s relatives at Spring Valley, Minn., and then extend their trip further westward.
Dr. Kendall is a young physician of excellent promise, and has held a responsible post in the Cook Co. (Ill.) Hospital, for a year or more past. The bride is, we believe, a native Spartan, and one of the most estimable young ladies of this city. In common with their many friends, we wish them great and continuing happiness.
Jeremiah Canfield b 1807 NY, Marr Fidelia C Blighton 1842

Hi,

This is my first post to the Canfield, so I wanted to post my interests.

My 3x grandmother was Fidelia Chloe Blighton, dtr of Hiram Blighton and Jemima McWethy. She married Jeremiah Canfield 1842 in Cattaraugus NY. Their children were

Armina b 1844
Marion Matilda b 1846 (my 2x ggrandmother)
Frank Willard b 1849
Hattie Augusta b 1857

Armina was apparently born in NY, while the other 3 children were born either in Dane Co WI, or Monroe Co WI.

The story goes that one day in either 1856 or 1857, Jeremiah went out hunting and never returned. Fidelia remarried to George Tuttle in 1858 (probably still WI), then went on to have 4 more children with George (William, Thomas Monroe, Laura and George). George sr died 1874 in S Dakota, then Fidelia and her children continued to move around abit, then eventually went with many members of her family up to Nanton Alberta Canada in 1901.

I have been unable to locate any information about the parents, siblings etc of Jeremiah Canfield. The only piece of info I have is that he may have been born in Cattaraugus NY.

If anyone has any additional information, I would like to hear from you. Many thanks!

regards,

Colleen Lill
Alberta Canada

I have two Cabinet Card photographs of “Dorothy & James Canfield, children of Dr. J. H. Canfield”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. One of the photos (described separately here) includes their mother Flavia (Camp) Canfield. This photo of the children by themselves, was taken in Lawrence (Douglas Co.) KS, and Dorothy looks to be about 5, while her brother James looks about 9.

I found James H. Canfield and family in the 1880 census for Lawrence (Douglas Co.) KS. James was a school teacher, age 35. Wife Flavia is age 32, while James A. is age 6 and Dora is age 1.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to James and Dorothy Canfield.

I have a Cabinet Card photograph of “Flavia Canfield (wife of James H.) and Dorothy and James”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. On the back of the Cabinet Card is written “Arlington, Vermont – Christmas, 1884”. Photo was taken in Lawrence (Douglas Co.) KS, and Dorothy looks to be about 5, while her brother James looks about 9.

I found James H. Canfield and family in the 1880 census for Lawrence (Douglas Co.) KS. James was a school teacher, age 35. Wife Flavia is age 32, while son James is age 6 and Dora is age 1. Ancestry Family Tree shows James H. and Flavia were married in June 1873, and parents of James, and Dorothea (she married a Mr. Fisher).

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Flavia Canfield and her children.

Seeking my Canfield Ancestor's of Michigan, by way of Ireland and Canada

I'm searching for any info that may lead me to my family of Canfields.

My GG Grandfather was John Wesley Canfield, he m. Rachel Kibbe and had the following children:

John Harrison
Hiram
Wilmont
Ida S.

All born in Tuscola Co. MI.

Rachel must have passed because I find him later in census records listed with his 2nd wife Mabel Ervin m. in Sanilac County MI, and together they had:

Bertha
Mary
Gertrude
Robert Leo

These children all lived in and around Otsego Co. Michigan and Cheboygan MI.

Mabel had a sister named Hattie who was married to John's son Hiram. they were divorced and Hiram remarried and is buried in Vanderbilt MI, Otsego Co.

From the first marriage of John Wesley, was his son John Harrison, and his son Cecil James Canfield is my grandfather.

I am willing to share all other Canfield info I have, however will not do so on a "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" mentality. I don't think genealogy should be about how many favors you can do for someone, I think it should be a sharing of family history with NO strings attached.

I prefer NO paid genealogists contact myself either while doing work for someone from the Canfield line as has happened in the past.

Thanks
Billie Jo Miller
Willis & Carrie (Dodson) Canfield and dtr Maude - KY, MO or IN

We know that a Maude Canfield (b. abt 1908 in either AL or MS) married a William Gordon (b. about 1904 in TN) around 1927. We believe they may have married in TX because they are on the 1930 census in Collin County, Texas.

Looking for Maude Canfield prior to 1930 we found a Maude of the right age in the household of Willis & Carrie Canfield, then based on where Willis and Carried reported their birth states and/or those of their parents we found a Willis and Carrie (Dodson) Canfield marriage record from 19 Apr 1888 in Clinton County, Indiana.

Maude and William Gordon had at least four children:
1) Eldie Lee Gordon (b. 1928 d. 1990); 2) Maye Gordon may have married name of Morgan; 3) Faye Gordon and 4) Virginia or Jean may have married name of Wallace.

Does this family sound familiar to anyone?

I am looking for Charlotte A Canfield, born 1818, died 1895, married James C. Reed; and Eliza Ann Canfield, married William Cornelius Van Vechten in 1826. I am assuming she was born about 1806. They lived in Auburn and Aurelius, Cayuga County, New York.

The Reeds and the Van Vechtens were closely related by marriage and interests; and it seems likely that Charlotte and Eliza Ann are either sisters or first cousins.

In 1820, there is a Daniel Canfield in the census. And there is evidence in later years for Dennis Canfield.
Can you help me place the women?

Just read a posting asking about the de Canville who came over from Normandy with William the Conqueror. He was Guillaume "le Poignard" (William the Dagger, sort of like Mac the Knife) de Canville, and he is listed on the Roll of Battle Abbey, Hastings. A century later, his descendant Sir Richard de Camville was the Admiral of the Crusader Fleet in the Third Crusade (Richard the Lion-hearted's, in 1189) which went from England to the Holy Land, stopping to sack Lisbon, Portugal on the way. Richard conquered the island of Cyprus, and the Lion-heart left de Camville to rule it as a forward base, making our ancestor the Justiciar (governor) of Cyprus. He founded Coombe Abbey, outside of Coventry, England when he returned. The foundations of the abbey are still there (with a later building atop them) in the municipal park, with a historical marker.

I am not clear on the relationship between this Richard and (perhaps) another Richard de Canville and Gerard or Gerald de Canville, the Sheriff of Lincoln, a bit later on (Gerard was around in 1216, when the French invaded England trying to topple King John from the throne. Gerard's wife Nicola de la Haye de Canville held the castle against the French while her husband was away. La Haye (La Haye du Puits) is a town in Normandy very close to Canville. An interesting bunch of relatives! Would appreciate any info other people have.

Let's Find Our Canfield DNA

Has anyone out there done a DNA analysis of male-line Canfield Y-chromosome DNA to find out where our prehistoric ancestors came from? National Geographic is offering a "Genographic Survey" DNA kit on their website for $99.00 that will trace our paternal heritage. If you have traced yours, male-line (Canfield surname, not adopted at any point) DNA, it would 'fit' all of us with a birth surname of Canfield, male or female. Since I'm a female I can only do a DNA trace of my maternal line (mitochondrial DNA), which I am presently doing, but I have no close living Canfield male relatives so I must rely on some of you. If you have already done one, please both reply to my email (kcborder@berkshire.rr.com) and post it on the Message Board so that others can benefit from it too. This will tell us what wandering path our Canfield ancestors took through Europe and beyond - what a wonderful thing to know.

Please, somebody out there of all the thousands of us - do it! A geneticist named Brian Sykes has identified the major male migration groups and written books on it in detail. Once we get the DNA info, we can then read up on who we really are.

Thanks to all of you - Karen Canfield Border
