Radford Cannefax Will

The ORIGINAL will of Radford Cannefax is available at the Greene Co. Archives, 1126 Boonville, Springfield MO. The phone number there is 417-868-4021. Some people who have not been there refer to the copy of the will that is recorded in the county records. The "copy" is copied exactly from the ORIGINAL will that is in the Archives. There, among many other old originals, is the will, the paper signed by Rountree and Steele swearing that they saw him sign it, and one other paper signed by Radford prior to his death. There are also original papers listing assets, sale records, receipts signed for items given in the will, and original papers signed by Benj. Cannefax as adm. of his father's will. When the family moved to Greene Co. MO, they started the different spelling. There are numerous ORIGINAL documents in the Archives attesting to this statement. Some of the family later reverted to the original spelling. In Greene Co. MO, Radford's ORIGINAL documents use the spelling Cannefax. Other places he spelled the name in its original Cannifax.

County recorded copies should not be confused with ORIGINALS in the Archives even if they are copied correctly. Please go to the Archives or hire a researcher to have an archive employee get the file of the will and the file of the settlement and copy the ORIGINALS for you.

As a great-great-great granddaughter who is fortunate enough to have access to these valuable ORIGINAL documents of Greene County history, I have had the privilege of seeing the ORIGINAL will several times and have had it copied by archive employees as well as seeing the "copy" people often refer to in the county records.

Rosemary, I am the grand-daughter of Mary Elizabeth Cannifax Shaddix. She is deceased and so is my Mother. My information is very sketchy, Mother talked of an Aunt Ora who lived in Dallas (Mesquite) area. I remember an Uncle Benny visiting with my grandmother in Whitesboro, Texas. She and my grandfather (Robert W. Shaddix) lived there many years then moved to Lancaster, Texas where they both died. Will try to get dates to you asap. If you know anything of the Aunt Ora or Uncle Benny relatives, please let me know. I cannot remember Mother talking about a name for her grandmother.

I am searching for any Cannifax relatives from the Houma, LA area. My grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Mamie Cannifax was from this area and had several relatives left in that area. Please let me know if anyone is out there who knows anything about her or some of her ancestors. She had a sister named Ora and a brother named (or called) Benny. They are definately from Houma, LA, not connected to the MO or KY Cannifax families to my knowledge.

Thanks, bcvv@aol.com

In the Pierce City Cemetery, Pierce City, MO., there are two gravesites. One is for George and Josephine Cannefax, Lot 5, Block 18. Across a small cemetery lane is another for a Walter N. Cannefax, born 1884 and died 1913. He is in Lot 35, Block 17. This may be Walter Noble Cannefax, youngest child of George Radford and Margaret Josephine Cannefax, the first grave occupants as Josephine is listed as the owner of the Walter N. plot.

Be patient in your search it keeps you open to more possibilities in your researching. My Cannefax's went from Va, to MO and possibly TN to OK and TX. Someone once told me to follow the towns around the Great Migration road. Have also heard of the family in CA and Utah. I'm in MN but that's not the usual case. Have also heard that my Sarah Jane Callahan Cannefax died at her daughter's home in IL or OH. Alot of my info has also come from the "side" families that Cannefax's married. Happy hunting!

Rosemary,
Thanks for your response. My husband, Robert Dodson, is the grandson of Fanny Canafax's brother John Bell. Fanny was a Bell before she married. We have a couple of her brother's names but not too much else. I would appreciate anything you can send. If you want to send a hard copy, mail it to Barbara Dodson, 701 Ortiz, NE Albuquerque, NM 87108-1444.

My daughter-in-law works in Fort Worth with a Canafax, but hasn't inquired about her ancestry. I will encourage her to see if she or someone in her family has done any research. If I find out anything new, I will pass it on.

Thanks again,
Barbara Dodson

Tom,
That would be wonderful if you would share your family tree. You can either attach it to my e-mail or mail a hard copy to my home: at 701 Ortiz, NE Albuquerque, NM 87108-1444.

I will look to see what I have on Canafax, but don't think it is very much. My son and daughter-in-law live in Arlington, TX and work in Fort Worth. My daughter-in-law works with a Canafax, but I don't think she ever asked about her genealogy. Perhaps that might be a possibility. I guess Wilson and the other brother live in Fort Worth, but when I contacted them, I got very little back so I assumed they didn't want to be involved in searching for family roots and didn't bother them again. I will keep you e-mail address and send you anything I find. Thanks again for your offer to share your information with me.
Barbara Dodson

The information we have was my husband's great aunt Fanny Bell married a Tom Canafax. They lived in Texas, I believe around the Fort Worth area. Fanny Bell Canafax had three sons: Jack, Goodman, and Wilson. Wilson (I understand) was a preacher. He was still living a few years ago at 6514 Oak Forest Court, Fort Worth 76112. I also have some other names but don't know how they are related, but they were given to me by my husband's uncle who had stayed in touch with them down through the years. Anyway, they are Sam and Frank. There was a VS Canafax listed in the Fort Worth telephone directory about 4 years ago, but it could have been a wife who just used initials, rather than put her first name in the book. When I wrote to them for information, they wrote back but didn't know much agout the family.
Sorry I don't have anything more to add. I hope you will stay in touch from time to time especially if you learn more.

Barbara

My husband has Canafax link. Fanny Bell married a Tom Canafax in Texas in the late 1800s. They had a bunch of kids. Mostly they lived around the Fort Worth area and my husband's family haven't been very close, so he hasn't very much information about them. We do have some names however, if you think this may be a link to your family.
Barbara Dodson
