HI Again!

I am so excited to find a relative in Ireland!
So, how did you end up in Ireland?

You probably have heard about the study in Canada and NYC on the Cannings gene mutation CDH-1. Eight of my siblings had the gene mutation which means 81% chance of getting stomach cancer. Two brothers & 3 sisters have had their stomachs removed. I was one of the lucky ones, no gene mutation.

On a happier note, have you ever been in the USA?
And yes, I will definitely keep you posted of any new info on the Canning line. I am feeling something will surface. And hoping it is before Christmas. I would love to give a fuller version of our family tree as gifts to the family.

OH! My mom's parents, Duggan & McGuire were born in Cavan and Tipperary, Ireland.

Take Care,
Pat

Yes we are related :) I think you're my Dad's cousin, my Dad is Brian Canning, your Uncle Martin's son. Dad and his family volunteered to move to Placentia from Merasheen, and weren't resettled. I got the information about Martin from Wexford from my Grandmother's (Kit) Bible when I was twelve years old. Let me know if you pick up any new clues :)

MY dad James had a brother Martin, who had 8 to 10 children, most of them boys. James & Martin's dad was Bernard P. born in 1878 in Placentia. I was told the government forced the small community to move to Merasheen, so they would not have to provide a school and other services.
Is that Martin your grandfather? Whoppee if it is! My dad joined the Merchant Marines and ended up in NY, where he married my mom, Rose Duggan. They had 12 children.
I can not get any info beyond Martin Canning born in Wexford in 1795.
I understand your frustration that living in Ireland and you still can't find more on the family. I do believe in persistence and the power of two! So lets work on it. I hear a powerful roots program is soon to hit the market.
So dear Catherine, are we related? Looking forward to hearing from you!

Pat Canning

Hi Pat. Are you related to my Grandfather Martin Canning from Placentia Newfoundland? His Father, Bernard Canning, named him "Martin" after his Grandfather (the first Martin Canning over from Ireland). As much as I have quizzed my Dad about any conversation in which he can remember his Grandfather Bernard talking about Martin from Wexford (Bernard's own Grandfather), nothing comes to mind. No name of any parish or town in Wexford was ever revealed to Dad. We also know nothing about Bernard's Father, Peter Canning. Bernard never talked about Peter either! There could of been a family rift, we don't know. My Uncle Greg Canning told me in an email that he remembered Bernard being called Judas behind his back. The whole thing is very frustrating because I live in Ireland and I am desparate to get some kind of lead because it's easy for me to get to Wexford for further research. Let me know if you hear anything.

All the best,
Catherine Canning

Can anyone help me establish the parentage of Charles James Canning? My family's tradition is that he was the son of Henry (Harry)Canning(1774-1841) who became Consul-General at Hamburg and grandson of Stratford Canning(1744-1787), but I have never been able to prove this definitively, as I don't know who his mother was or where he was born. Charles married Philippa Hopkins at Marston Sicca in 1837 and died at Barcheston, Warwickshire. Any further information would be a great help. Many thanks.
Marilyn

Interesting, because my GF was James Canning and had a brother William and a sister Eliza. They were born in Co. Tyrone, probably fairly close to Londonderry. However, James was born in 1874, William in 1871 and Eliza in 1869. Their father was Patrick Canning.
Just shows how hard it is to research this family, when the names are so common!

Not sure if there is any connection. I am surprised at the number of James Cannings that immigrated from Ireland in the late 1870s. My grandfather was James Aloysius Canning, and his father, my great grandfather, was also named James Aloysius Canning. I believe my great grandfather left Ireland around 1879, and he settled in Steelton, Pennsylvania. Do we match?

hi: Saw your post on the Free Board of Rootsweb regarding Canning from Limrick, Ireland. I'm trying to tie in a Charles Canning who was born in Co. Cork, came to the States in the 1700's (mid to late), had at least one daughter, Letitia, born approx. 1797 near Gettysburg, PA(lived to be over 100). She and her family (no father mentioned, only JANE -either mother or Aunt) in 1814-1815 and settling in Knox Twp., Jefferson Co., Ohio. Letitia married my 3x great-grandfather, David Walker, who is said to have been in Penna. as well. David died in the mid 1850's. Letitia died in 1902?? Does any of this info correspond with yours? Please e-mail me at suecampbell1977@yahoo.com. Thanks so much! Blessings!

James Canning - Ellen Cook (McCook) Ireland - Garvagh area - Scotland

I am desperately trying to trace the lineage of my G-G-Grandfather, James Canning who married Ellen (Helen) Cook (McCook)in 1833 at First Garvagh Pres Church and had children, Mary, Agnes, William, Margaret, Helen and Hannah. they show in the Kirkcolm 1851 census and I know they returned to Derry, Ireland because they are buried at Saint Paul's Church in Garvagh. Their son, William, married Sarah Jane Young and came to the US (Pennsylvania - Montgomery County)in the 1880's. They married at the Parish church of Aghadowey. I have found Ellen McCook's parents, William and Mary, but cannot find the parents and siblings of James. James was born abt. 1809 and was an agricultural worker. Any help would be appreciated.

I am looking for information on the Cannings as well. My Great Grandfather was John Chester Cannning from Malden, MA along with his wife, Helen Elizabeth Johnson. John's father was James Canning. All I have on james is born in May 1852 in Ireland and married to Annie M or Mercy Ann. Got this infor from my grandma Grace Berry (Canning) before she passed in 2002. I am having trouble finding anything on them. Helen's father I think was Otto M. Johnson. I do not know his wife's name but they had Helen (my great grandmother) and I think a son named Otto Maurice too. I have Otto Maurice death date of 27 Mar 1967.

If anyone has any other information that would help me, I would greatly appreciate it. If anyone needs any info from me or my tree, please feel free to message me anytime.

Thanks,
J Craig

My maternal grandmother Brigid Canning's sister was named Rose Ann Canning and Rose Ann was an inherited first name. They lived near the town of Mohill in County Leitrim in the west of Ireland adjoining County Donegal. The Cannings were extensive sheep farmers there and my great grandfather Michael Canning was a member of Mohill County Council.

Robert and Jane Phillips Canning were my great grandparents. By 1860 they were living in Allegheny PA, now the North Side of Pittsburgh. They did have a daughter Eliza, but accordind to the US Census she was not old enough in 1863 to be married. Eliza Canning, known as Lizzie, did marry Albert Patterson. They lived in Pittsburgh until their deaths in the 30s (Eliza) and 40s (Albert).

Family of Robert and Mary Wilson Canning, Tobermore, Londonderry, N. Ireland. My Grandmother was Isabella, she emigrated to USA and married John Alfred Keenan. Lived in Pennsylvania and NJ. G.grandfather Canning married 3 times. My Grandmother was from the third marriage. She was born about 1864. Do not know if any of this information fits your family. Maybe you are from one of the earlier families. I understand there were quite a few children.

Ldeville is my husbands email address, mine is NJNANA7@aol,com
