John CANNING(S)

Recent searches at familysearch.org have located a possible birth and christening of my John CANNING(S) at Wilton by Salisbury, Wiltshire, UK in 1805.

This record shows John was the son of James CANNINGS and Mary (unknown).

John married Maria Ann DUDMAN probably at Ludgershall where the couple worked at the nearby Biddesden Hall before emigrating to NSW in 1839. John died in 1845

I'd love to hear from anyone with connections to this family.

Michael Lightfoot
Canberra, Australia

William Cannings & Elizabeth Wilkins

Hello - I am trying to find information about William Canning(s) and his wife Elizabeth Wilkins, who were married in 1791 at New Brentford, Middlesex. I am, more importantly, trying to find information on their offspring. The only one I have is William Samuel, b.1821 in Hertfordshire - but as you can see there is a 30 year gap, and I'm sure they must of have more than one child.
Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Kody594, Could you reply to my email below, please? Mary Ann's brother William "Will" Jr. was my great-great grandfather. Turns out, he seems to have been a cad. Even found a court record of one of his divorces. His first wife (of 4) was my ancestor. Also have William Sr. and Sarah's wills from Henderson historical society. William Sr., though you may already know, was a much-loved fire chief in Henderson for several years.

Lisa Savage e mail at: hmstrwhl(at)localnet.com

Steven,

There is a possiblity as the Cannings were living in Ditteridge 1809 - They had more daughters than sons, so will check out the sons children. George didn't have an Ann might have been his son George, James I only have one child so I wonder if he moved away. There was another family of Cannings James I don't know the conection yet. Will also look for the Carter family as well for you later as I have the fiche for Ditteridge & Box. Irene

Dear Martin
I have the index for Hampshire 1851 census. In Preston Candover there is a family of Cannings
George Cannings 50 born Preston Candover
A 44 born Nutley
S 15 born Preston Candover
J 7 born Preston Candover
Also a George 22 born Preston Candover but not living with the above family. Sorry there is no names but the head of house but that is what is put down in the census. Have you tried looking in the 1861 census that would give his parents. I looked on the 1881 and it said Son in Law (Stepson today I think). Hope this helps. Irene

Irene,

I know it's been a long time but thanks for your help.

I now have a copy of Harry Cannings Marriage Certificate to Emma Myrtle ( Born 1864 - Brown Candover, father William) on 15 November 1884 in Brown Candover. The Wedding Certificate shows his father as a James Cannings. Interestingly James has not signed as a witness so may have died earlier - I have found reference of a James Cannings dying in 1864 but haven't proved the link yet.

Harry is also shown on the 1871 census as son-in-law wth the same family of Charles Westbrook.

He died unexpectedly of a heart attack Tuesday at the Ballard American Legion Hall.

Born in Boston, Mr. Cannings came here 63 years ago.
Cannings Family - The Candovers, Hampshire

I am researching the Cannings Family from the Candovers in Hampshire. My Great Great Grandfather Harry (born Preston Candover 1862/3) Married Emma (poss surname Myrtle) in 1884 (born Chilton Candover about 1864). Their son Frederick Harry G(eorge?) Cannings was born Chilton Candover 28 Sept 1888. He married a Dorcas (surname uknown, died 12 Feb 1958). Their children included my Grandfather Charles Harry Payton/Patent Cannings.

I have located a Harry Canning on the 1881 census born 1862 in Preston Candover who was living in the household of a Charles Westbrook and listed as his son in law although his status is unmarried? Possible stepfather??

Any information on this family would be gratefully received.

Dear Carolyn, I just though I might be able to look George up on the 1881 census for the UK. I found one in Balcombe Sussex aged 20 Lodger. He was from Bath in Somerset the other George Cannings was in Kent. These seem to be the only Cannings born after the 1860's which could possibly be your George. Unless he was under 21 when he married. Let me know if you find out anything more or if you would like anything found out in the 1881 census as I have it at home and enjoy trying to find people. Hope this information helps you. Irene

George Cannings in Sussex

Dear Carolyn
In the 1881 census George Cannings was aged 20 and single, as i said from Bath, he was a lodger and a Dom. Serv. living at New England Cottages, Balcombe, Sussex. which is south of Crawley. Though I would investigate further and found a George Cannings at St. Leonards Laundry, Lower Beeding, Sussex.
George Head Coachman (D) aged 40 Bath
Annie Wife Laundress aged 39 Bath
Laura Daur aged 16 Bath
Ernest Son Scholar aged 12 Bath
Florence Daur Scholar aged 9 Brighton
Arthur Son Scholar aged 6 Brighton
Lower Beeding is to the left of Balscombe, so could this be the 1st George's father and family could be worth noting this for further reference. Will keep my eyes opening for any other George Cannings, they do seem to have come from the SW as I have found, you never know we might be related way back. All the best, if I can help anymore let me know, only to glad to help fellow searchers and possible family. Irene

1891 1871 Census for Cannings

Hi just had an idea have you looked on the 1891 census for George to see if he is married then, the 1871 would help to see if he is with the elder Geroge at Brighton, might take a bit of digging, the 1901 census comes out next year on line so that be easy and will help for sure, but the others take time to look at. London Records office for Births Marriage and Deaths have all the censuses on the top floor if you can get there. Once you have the eldest child you will find it easier to find the marriage which will give the fathers name, you can get copies of certificates for £6.50, you order them from London and then they post them to you.
Hi Carolyn,
My family comes from Box, Wiltshire, I live in Guildford in Surrey so not far away. My gg grandmother was Jane Cannings (1816) she was born in Ditteridge (next door to Box). Where her parents came from I'm not sure yet, will have to look at the 1841 census and hope that will tell me. There is a family records office in Brighton but I don't know where that is yet. They would hold all Church Baptisms marriages and burials, and I'm sure the censuses for the Sussex area. I will have to look that up or perhaps if you find the address you could let me know. I will be looking in Brighton for my Husbands family some of which comes from Brighton. Some families did seem to move a lot then didn't they, makes you wonder how they did it with no cars or vans to move you. Have you ever been to the London Record centre, worth a trip if you can get there. Irene
