Barbara Cannon, 68, died Sunday, Nov. 5 at Allen Memorial Hospital.
Born on Mar. 23, 1927, Mrs. Cannon was a lifelong resident of Oberlin, Ohio. (Lorain County)
A [1946] graduate of Oberlin High School, she worked in the custodial department of Oberlin College for more than 20 years. She retired in 1992.
In her spare time Mrs. Cannon enjoyed gardening and reading.
She is survived by her husband, David W.; sons David D. and Todd of Oberlin, and Dean, of Cleveland; daughters Marian C. Wright of Chandler, Arizona, Margaret Scott of Oberlin and Brenda Isom of Atlantic City, New Jersey; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sisters Margaret Campbell of Oberlin and Marian Nuby of Sandusky, Ohio; and brothers James and John “Jack” Wall, both of Los Angeles.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Miriam (nee Grant) Wall; brothers William Walh, Steve and Sandy Wall; and sister Johnett.
Friends may call today, Tuesday, Nov. 7 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Cowling Funeral Home. Services will be Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Pastor Charles B. Mayle will officiate. Burial will be in Westwood Cemetery.

Dorothy Mae Cannon
Dorothy Mae Cannon, 66, of Oberlin, Ohio died last Thursday at Elyria Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
She was born in Evanston, Illinois, and had spent most of her life in Oberlin[graduating from Oberlin High School in 1939].
She managed the snack bar and rathskeller at Oberlin College for years. She then became food director at the FAA and later was director of food service for the Oberlin public schools, from which she retired in 1984.
Mrs. Cannon was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, the Martin Luther King Society, and the Bridge Club, and enjoyed golfing and bowling.
She is survived by her husband, Moses “Sam”; three daughters, Mrs. Richard (Barbara) Manigoe of Columbus, Ohio, Carol Cannon of Syracuse, N.Y., and Mrs. J. C. (Romaine) Cash of Elyria; two sons, John of Oberlin and Bruce of Columbus, OH; and ten grandchildren.
Services were Tuesday morning at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Fred L. Steen, pastor, officiating.
Burial was in Westwood Cemetery.

Jeremiah Cannon
Jeremiah Cannon, 70, of Andover, Mass., former Oberlin resident, died Oct. 20 at Lawrence General Hospital, Lawrence, Mass., after a long illness.
Born in Shady Grove, Ala., he grew up in Oberlin and graduated from Oberlin High School [in 1942].
He received the bachelor’s degree from Ohio University, Athens, Ohio in 1947.
Mr. Cannon was a chemist at General Electric Corp. for 15 years, retiring in 1990. He moved to Andover in 1970.
During World War II, he served with the Army, receiving various service awards, including the Purple Heart.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Mary L.; a son, Jeremiah Jr. of Winchester, Conn.; a daughter, Courtney L. Scott of Atlanta, Ga.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother, Moses “Sam” Cannon of Oberlin; and sisters, Cloel Turner of Oberlin and Mary Stiles of Elyria.
Services were Oct. 27 in the Cowling Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles B. Mayle officiating.
Burial was in Westwood Cemetery.

Columbus -- Romaine Y. Cannon-Cash, 54, of Columbus, formerly of Oberlin, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, in West Park Nursing Home, following an illness with A.L.S.
She was born in Oberlin and graduated from Oberlin High School [in 1969].
Mrs. Cannon-Cash had been employed at Oberlin College in the food service department and in Columbus worked in the Ohio State University food service department until her illness.
She was a member of Jerusalem Tabernacle Church, Columbus, and a former member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Oberlin.
Survivors include her daughters Robin and Jeannie; sisters Barbara Manigoe and Carole J. Cannon; brothers John C. Cannon and Bruce A. Cannon; and five grandchildren and nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Friends may call Friday, 6 to 8 p.m., at Jerusalem Tabernacle Church in Columbus. Friends may call in Oberlin on Saturday from 10 a.m. until service at 10:30 a.m. in Mount Zion Baptist Church, 47 Locust St. Pastor Willis Williams of Elyria will officiate.
Burial will be in Westwood Cemetery, Oberlin.

Not sure which post you were referring to. I have researched the children of Louis Mathieu and Claire Peytavin fairly extensively for a descendant of their son, Adolphe. My post concerned Marie Louise Mathieu, daughter of Louis and Claire Peytavin Mathieu, who was the second wife of Pierre Canon. Is your Celeste Marie Louise=Marie Louise? (I don't have access to my notes right now.) If so which of Pierre Canon's children were hers? Thanks.

I'll copy the pages and mail to you but did not photograph the entries in the margins of pages due to time and costs. The Bible is filled with handwritten notes, not all pertinent to genealogy or of interest to persons outside our family. The person with the Bible lives in Ohio and has expressed a desire to not be bothered with family researchers....after a lot of begging to the original holder who has since died, I got 2 days to have photos made. The granddaughter who now possesses the Bible is adamant that her grandfather's wishes to not be disturbed will be carried out. Sorry, my copies will have to suffice.

Thanks so much, Steve, and I assume you meant 1851 for Wm. Burris Cannon's birth date rather than 1951 (you wrote: On the page that lists John and Martha's marriage date, the line that follows reads "WBC was borned October 09, 1951"). And, since 19th century folks didn't tend to put zeros in dates like computers make us do nowadays...I'm assuming the date is just October 9, 1851!

You do know that there's a BURRIS CANNON, age 10, in Leah Cannon's 1860 census household. Was this her son, or a grandson and the son of John Cannon & Martha Stacey? I haven't traced the David & Leah Cannon family; did they have a son named Burris born about 1850?

If you'd like to share the bible page photos that you DO have, especially the ones with John Cannon's name (and any other pertinent names such as the marginal-entry of the 3 girls Anna/Annie, Corine & Martha/Mattie), I'll be glad to see if any semi-legible names/dates appear clearer to me in the original writing.

And, if you'd like to share your cousin's name & address, I wouldn't at all mind contacting the bible owner today and asking for a new look at the bible. New photographs or digital images, for instance, would be great for everyone concerned. Sometimes an outside researcher's query will get better results than a close relative's.

The Hawthornes were strong Baptists and Rev. Kedar Hawthorne (1797-1877) was one of Alabama's best-known pioneer Baptist preachers. Researching his family is what led me and my cousin Margaret Gaston to "what happened to the daughters" ... and so to Mary Hawthorne who married John H. Cannon in 1851.

Since you have a Nettles/Cannon connection, and you live in Monroeville, have you asked Al Nettles about the Staceys & Cannons & the bible record? He's a wonderful genealogist and researcher.

On the page that lists John and Martha's marriage date, the line that follows reads "WBC was borned October 09, 1951" The entry related to his parentage is an assumption based upon the proximity of the entry to the marriage date of John and Martha. There is no mention of the girls in this section. Further along in the Bible recorded in the margin of a page are the names of the girls...Cannon is not listed, only the Christian names. Because the names are identical to those in the 1870 census, we assumed they were the daughters of John and Martha (as she was known in our family)John H. Cannon is recorded in the Bible but understand that the Bible dates to 1751 and some is hard to read. Several Stacey researchers use John E. Cannon. If you are looking for concrete interpretations, I cannot furnish because within our family, we see the spelling and wording differently in various name and date entries. The Bible entries are in many hands further causing difficulties in reading. It has long been suspected that we are dealing with two different men, however, some posts were made before this became apparent. My information came to me 10 years before I ever saw the Bible and had access for 2 days to make an attempt at transcription. Today, it is in possession of a cousin who has placed it in a safety deposit box. I do have photographs of the family pages but not of all the entries in margins of pages or upon the hundreds of scraps of paper within the Bible.
I regret the confusion my entries have caused for you...many are several years old and entered before more knowledgeable Stacey researchers made contact with me. To date, no Cannon researcher from this line has come forward.

I really think this is a case of two families getting mixed up, and it needs sorting out! You've mentioned the Stacey bible in several messages, but you've never given a transcript of what's actually written in it.

One of the direct Cannon name/date quotes from the bible that I've seen in your messages is: "Our Bible reads William Burris Cannon born 09 Oct 1851, s/o John Cannon and Martha Mary Stacey." However, this doesn't quite look like a mid-1800s bible entry. Might the actual handwriting say "William Burris Cannon was born October 9th (or 9th of October) 1851, son of John Cannon and Martha Mary Stacey"? Or, "... son of John Cannon and Martha Stacey"?

Also in some of your messages you've written "John H. Cannon" but in others you clearly wrote "John E. Cannon." In the 1851 birth entry, you've listed Wm's father as just "John Cannon." Both "John E. Cannon" and "John H. Cannon" appear in various county records, and they do appear to be two different men.

In some messages you say that only Wm. What is actually in the bible, only William Burris Cannon born 1851, or William as well as sisters Anna, Corrine and Mattie? You see why the exact wording in the bible is important!

Could you please share the full Stacey bible transcription, to help other Cannon/Stacey/Hawthorne researchers? Births, marriages, deaths? Whose bible was it, Martha Stacey's parents' bible or her own bible or one of her siblings' bibles? It's an important resource for researchers of these families.

The "John H. Cannon" that we have in the Hawthorne family tree appears to have been the son of JOEL E. CANNON and wife SUSAN/SUSANNAH BENGE of Wilcox County. Joel died by 1839, and in the 1850 census, John is living with his widowed mother Susan and siblings in Wilcox County. (Alternatively, John's mother could have been Joel E. Cannon's previous wife, but that doesn't affect what we see in the census entries, or his marriage and later life).

At this time in 1850, as you said in one of your messages, "your" John Cannon, son of DAVID CANNON, was counted living beside his parents, David & Leah Cannon, in 1850 Monroe County. Here are those two different 1850 households:

1850 census - Wilcox Co., Alabama. Family #733, 17th Nov. 1850, page 394a:

Susan Cannon - 50 - $5000 real estate - born Georgia
John Cannon - 20 (born abt 1830) - Ala

Will Book 2, p. 100. So there's no doubt that "John Cannon" in this 1850 census was "John H. Cannon" of the 1842 guardianship record]

Hasn't anyone found a will or estate records for David Cannon in Monroe County between the time of the 1850 census, and 1860 when his widow Leah had moved to Mississippi? Might there have been deeds made to his children as they married?]

Researcher Hub Broughton posted on the Monroe Co. RootsWeb list in 2005, describing one of David Cannon's sons as "John E. Cannon":

DAVID CANNON (b. abt. 1803/04 SC - d. 1850s AL) family:

Found on 1830 census of Monroe County. Found on 1840 census of Conecuh County. Found on 1850 census of Monroe County.

Two of David's children, John and Margaret, marry in late 1840s and are found next to him on the 1850 census. I think the John E. Cannon that signed as security for William Pritchett to marry Margaret Cannon in Monroe County on 10/16/1849 was probably Margaret's brother. STACEY family researchers say that John Cannon's wife was Martha STACEY, daughter of Amos STACEY and Elizabeth KEARLEY. They have the marriage as 10/04/1850 in Conecuh County. I think this came from a STACEY family bible. I find no further info on John's family. I have tracked Margaret's family thru 1880.

It does look as if there were two John Cannons born around 1830 who are getting confused in records and family trees:

1. John E. Cannon, son of David & Leah Cannon of 1850 Monroe Co., AL, census, who apparently married Martha Mary Stacey in 1850 (probably in Conecuh Co., since we don't have those marriage records until 1866).

2. John H. Cannon, son of Joel E. & Susan Cannon of 1850 Wilcox Co., AL, census, who married Mary Hawthorne in 1851 in Wilcox County.

It has already been proven that Catherine Loving is the daughter of William Cannon. It has also been proven that William Cannon was the son of Christopher Loving. Christopher Loving was a patriot in the American Revolution. His DAR file number is A071982. In order to prove the lineage whoever joined DAR under Christopher Loving would have had to submit documents that established the relationship between them. You can contact your local DAR chapter and request a long-form copy of the application. They will charge you $10 for the copy. I hope this helps.

The marriage date is recorded in the Stacey Bible. You are correct, it does not appear in Book A of Monroe County marriages (the book used for the time period). The name is recorded as John H. in the Stacey Bible. William Burris Cannon is recorded but the girls are not. The 1870 census records Mary S. Cannnon and John Cannon living at Denard's Bluff. (actually everyone in the county is recorded at Denard's Bluff in 1870 just as everyone is recorded in Burnt Corn in 1860)
Based upon the names in proximity to Martha and John in 1870, the family lived near Amber Post Office, very near the old Stacey home.

We have this family identified as that of John H. Cannon (not John E. Cannon) and Mary Hawthorn(e), daughter of well-known Baptist minister Rev. Kedar Hawthorne.
I can't find a Monroe or Conecuh or Wilcox Co. marriage for any John Cannon and a Stacey bride. Maybe John married twice, with first wife Martha Mary Stacey dying at the birth of son William in Oct. 1851, then John quickly remarrying in Dec. that year to Mary Hawthorn. But if so, where did he marry Martha Mary in 1850? Maybe Butler Co., whose courthouse burned in 1853?

Would love to know if the Stacey Bible and other records show what is correct on this family!

My grandfather is Thomas Cannon Of Co.Offaly (near galway) and his father was called Thomas also. The Cannon's still live in ireland, my Cannon relatives live in Co.Meath in Ireland.

Looking for information on my grandfather Austin Aloysius Cannon and his wife Theresa Shanley Cannon (came from Sligo, Ireland in 1920) as well as any other children, siblings or parents. Little is know about this side. All we have is that they lived in Brooklyn on Ave K around 1930 and then possibly Ryder Street. Married on June 10 1925.

Hi - Framk Cannon was my great grandfathers father, his name was Frank Radford. From what I was told Frank Cannon was not a slave owner and Jennie Radford was not a slave. Frank was a Doctor and Jennie was a mid-wife. If this is the same family their son Frank Radford lived in Camden, TX and married Eugenia Marshall. They had 10 children and some are still living in Tx and CA.

Well, this is me again. I have discovered more info! Katherine was my grandmothers name. The wife before my mother to my father was Carolyn Marie. The son is Brian dob 19Sept1966. My father's father's name is Robert. That's as far as I've gotten. :( Very discouraging..

I now know the answer to this question. William was the son of John Cannon, Jr., and Mary Price, and he was the grandson of John Cannon, Sr., and Hester (Easter, Ester, Esther) Pledge of Henrico Co., VA. William was born about 1725 and died after 1787, possibly in Amelia or Prince Edward Co., VA.

My African-American ancestors also lived in Newberry. My 3G paternal grandparents were Simon (b. 1824 in SC) and Hennie (b. 1825 in SC) Cannon. In the 1870 census, they lived next to the Dr John L Cannon family. I imagine that Dr Cannon and his parents owned Simon and Hennie before emancipation. If anyone has information about Dr. John Cannon, I would enjoy learning more.

In the 1880s, my branch of the Cannons moved to Woodruff in Spartanburg County, SC.

My father's mother was Hellen Duncan Cannon, whose parents were Ada Maggy Secrest/Sechrist and James R. Cannon (1843-1880. The family seems have been located in Brownsville and Meyersdale (Somerset CO), PA. I cannot seem to find any familiar names/places in the long list provided by cannonfh in a previous message. Any connections to any other Cannons from that area? James R's father was Henry (1868) but with no hints, I cannot seem to get past Henry.

His mother Su Virene Cannon b. 1830 Arkansas. I was born after Henry Welch Cannon died. The story I was told is that his lawn mower/tractor ran over him. I did know my great grandma Pearl his wife when we visited her in Yorba Linda, California.
