Another update - Found Jose Maria Cano's father and mother. He was Ignacio Cano born in Matamoros Tamaulipas around 1798 and she was Josefa Galvan Cantu, also from Matamoros. They moved to Reynosa where all the other Cano's below were born. If anyone has any information on Ignacio and/or Josefa I would appreciate it.

thanks
jose cano

Update: Found out that Amado Cano Cantu, married to Benita Trevino and son of Jose Maria Cantu and Maria Refugia Cantu Reyna, was Preciliano's father. Jose Maria was from Burgos and moved to Reynosa. If anyone knows any information on any of these folks please let me know.

Looking for information on my grandfather, Preciliano Cano. I found info that states that he once lived in Rio de San Juan, Reynosa, Tamaulipas. He also lived in San Manuel Texas for a while. I know that he was related to Amado Cano, Daniel Cano, Adelina Cano, and others in Alacranes, also in Reynosa. Preciliano was born around 1886 and was married to Josefina Flores. If anybody can provide me info I would appreciate it. You can send me info directly to my email address at jcano1@satx.rr.com

jose cano

I'm trying to trace my grandmothers family. She was given up by her parents at a very young age. We don't have much information, but the following.
My grandmothers name is Raquel Arroyo born 10/17/1928 in El Paso, TX. Her parents are listed on her birth certificate as Isabel Arroyo and Maria Cano. Who both came from Mexico. My grandmother had a brother, Jose Arroyo. My grandmother recalls a baby girl when she left the home. So she may have a sister, but we are not certain. If any of these names seem familiar, please respond.
Thank you in advance!

Hi,
I'm looking for my grandmothers family. I don't know much, but my grandmothers name is Raquel Arroyo. Born to Isabel Arroyo and Maria Cano. My grandmother also had a brother, Jose Arroyo. My grandmother was given up to a foster family at a very young age. She doesn't know much about her biological family. I know that before she was given up she lived with her family in El Paso. I believe her parents came from Chihuhua. Please let me know if any other those names are familiar.
Venesa

Hello my name is Albert Cano. I am from El Paso TX. This was left back to me in 2005.. I didn't find much use for it but maybe it may help. By the way my Great Great Grandfather is Catarino. There was a Catarino Cano in Jalpas, Guanajuato in the late 1800's. In 1907 he was a 'testigo' to a boy born to Julian Cano who was named Felipe Cano. In 1907 Catarino was 23 years old. Perhaps the baby Felipe was named after an uncle or such. The baby was Felipe, his father as Julian, his grandfather was Bartolo.

Hi Jeff. I think your gut feeling about the out of wedlock child (Seberiana) of Maria Merced de la Garza makes absolute sense to me. This kind of stuff was prominent then and to retain a family's dignity names were frequently changed. This happened with my great grandfather Celso Cano, who took his mother's surname and dropped his fathers' (de la Garza).

This same great grandfather had also been previously married to one Cayetena Trevino but the records of this affair do not exist. Three children were born of this marriage but somehow Cayetana vanished from the earth. Celso brought his daughter Juliana into his second marriage and Juliana's uncles attended my grandfather's baptism. I think the birth records are more useful than the death records for this reason. For whatever reason one decides to change their name, especially in former centuries it makes it more difficult to make the connections we look for.

I'm curious about the Barrea name though. I haven't run across this one before. Through time it appears that the Cano's evolved with and maintained relationships with the de la Garza and Trevino families, for whatever reason it's possible that your wife's connection to Eufemio Trevino may also be linked to our missing Cayetana? If it is true that Seberiana's mom was Maria Merced de la Garza then she and I are truly cousins... Let me know what else you find

In peace, Roy
Hi Roy...I looked at Seberiana's death notice in the Hualahuises civil records from March 1893. It states she was 80 years old and that her parents were Don Esteban Barrera and Dona Maria Merced de la Garza. I went looking for them but couldn't find anyone matching their description.

From March 1892, I found the death notices of two of her children, Guadalupe Trevino and Nabor Villalobos. I wasn't able to find Guadalupe Trevino's birth record from around 1847 (Maybe the Mexican War had disrupted things). I did find Nabor Villalobos' baptismal record and Seberiana is recorded as a Barrera. When she married Eufemio Trevino in 1850 she is using the Barrera name.

But when I went looking for her first husband's people I found their marriage record and she was using the de la Garza name and it said that Jose Manuel and Juana Silva were her parents. I'm pretty sure of the records on Antonio Villalobos. When Seberiana remarried in 1850, she had to get a special dispensation from the gobernador to marry because they were relatives in the first degree. Seberiana's second husband Eufemio Trevino was the Antonio Villalobos' nephew. And she remarried three years after the birth of her daughter by her second husband.

I suppose the death record could have been garbled memories from relatives, but the man who actually recorded Seberiana's death was her own son in law Octaviano Trevino. I just don't know what to make of it. Please don't think I'm trying to cast aspersions on the character of your ancestors. I think it highly unlikely but the thought crossed my mind that perhaps Maria Merced de la Garza had had Seberiana out of wedlock with Esteban Barrera but Merced's parents raised her as their own child? And why did she stop using de la Garza and start using Barrera later in life? And why the name Barrera? Jose Manuel de la Garza and Juana Gertrudis Silva are both classified as part of a lower class group in the records...was Seberiana lighter-skinned and married up into the more socially prominent Villalobos and Trevinos and didn't want to be reminded of her lower-class roots?

Digging into all this is awfully fun but involves touching nerves and I'm just an inlaw so I hope I'm not saying anything remotely insulting...its not my intention at all. I am trying to trace my wife's mtdna and we are going to have some testing done this month. We will know the roots of Juana Gertrudis Silva whatever the records say since my wife carries her mtdna.

Blessings!

Jeff

Maria Merced de la Garza was one of my grandmothers ( abt 4 generations removed). She was married to Guillermo Cano (my grandfather abt 4 gens removed). They had 3 sons (Bernabe, Mateos and Silverio) and 3 daughters ( Ana, Maria Rita an Gabina.) Seberiana was not a daughter of Maria Merced.

Maria Seberiana de la Garza's brother Antonio de la Garza married Maria Segunda Cano (my aunt 4 gens. removed). The parents of both Maria Segunda and Antonio were Jose Manuel de la Garza and his Juana Silva, not Maria Merced de la Garza. I don't have a clue how this distortion arose or if infidelity played a role?

I don't recall the surname of Seberiana's husband. Who's mother is listed on Antonio's death certificate? They should be the same, no. I guess you have a lot of detective work ahead of you.

By the way I had a difficult time getting information about my grandfather Frank Cano but over time it was found that his first name had been changed from Jose Francisco. I also found a marriage certificate that connected him to one Maude Cotton in addition to my known grandmother Lena (Malena) ONeal. This was a secret no one in my recent family tree ever knew about. Anyway your wife and I are almost distant cousins as there is a drop of Serberian's brother's blood in me. Take Care, Roy

Maria Segunda Cano married Antonio de la Garza in 1828. It is possible that his sister was Maria Seberiana de la Garza. Maria Segunda Cano was one of 5 children from Vicenzio Cano and Ana Maria Camarillo.

Maria Segunda's brother was Guillermo Cano (b. abt 1797) who married Maria Merced de la Garza (b. 1802) Maria Merced's parents were Jose Manuel de la Garza and Maria Gertrudis Juana Silva. Maria Gertrudis Silva is the same person as Juana Gertrudis Silva except her first name was dropped by the recorder as is often the case (the same way you dropped the first part of Seberiana's name in this discussion). I have no further information on this de la Garza branch but I am a descendant of Guillerma Cano and Maria Merced de la Garza. I hope this may help you in your journey of deiscovery.

I don't have any innformation about Maria

Greetings! I read your post from 2009 with interest as I have been trying to track back my wife's ancestor Maria Seberiana de la Garza who died in Hualahuises, NL in 1893. I believe her parents to be Jose Manuel de la Garza and Juana Gertrudis Silva of Criullas, Tamaulipas. Although you list her as Maria Gertrudis Silva, is she the same person as Juana Gertrudis Silva?

Seberiana seems to have had a brother named Antonio who married Maria Segundo Cano on 11 Feb 1828. She was the daughter of Vicencio Cano and Ana Maria Camarillo. Do you know of a family connection?

Re: Cano Family of New York City

My name is Janet Cano, born 8-19-49. My grandfather was Lewis Cano, born in New York on July 22, 1896. He died on 11-17-1972. His parents were Victoria Kincaid (1867-1937) and Lewis Cano (Born 1869-date of death unknown). I know he had quite a few brothers - Vernon being one of them.

Your husband's maternal grandfather could be my grandfather's brother. That would make him my great uncle and your husband would be a cousin.

Your post is over 10 years old so I don't know if you will see it but if you want to get in touch with me - e-mail me at: chimneym2@aol.com

Preciliano Cano and Amado Cano

You can send me info directly to my email address at jcano1@satx.rr.com

jose cano

Mercedes...are you still out there? I've been trying to find an e-mail addy for Stephen but haven't found anything yet. I found a note that Cristobal Javier was from Allende. I had thought this was Miguel Allende but I found it just west of General Teran, the same Cano source town for Stephen's line. The town of Allende was named after General Ignacio Allende. With only 15-30 miles difference between General Teran, Allende, Montemorelos, and Pilon...I'm concentrating on finding the oldest possible records for Allende, late 1600's to early 1700's so that we can find Cristobal Javier's parents. The LDS records are mid 1800's so no luck there at first glance. Have you found any of the older sacramental records for this area?

Hello, I tried to send a reply to your query but it was rejected somehow. Anyway I have some information that might be helpful to you regarding the d la Garza/Cano connections.
You will have to email me your email address and I can send you the attachment. The type of file I have does not conform to this websites requirements for attachments. Peace, Roy Collins: roycollins@cox.net
