You might like to know that a James Cant (b 1850 Denton, Lincolnshire)and Mary Elizabeth Trigg (b 1847 Denton Lincolnshire) appear on a passenger list arriving in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from Paraguay in 1873. They were part of the ill-fated Lincolnshire Farmers scheme of 1872. You can check further details on the www.argbrit.org website. My greatgrandfather was also part of the group.

Mary

I don't undrestand what you have said but I wonder if what you suggest is legal.

I notice these entries in FreeBMD.

Births Jun 1860
CANT Archibald Tynemouth 10b 1[53]7

Deaths Sep 1860
CANT Archibald Tynemouth 10b 97

It would look to me like the child born in the June Qtr may well have been the person who died a few months later. Do you have a copy of the death certificate and/or a copy of the birth certificate?

As regards the marriage of Foster CANT and Isabella BOYD it may have been earlier than you say:

Marriages Dec 1856
Atkinson Thomas Gateshead 10a 663
Boyd Isabella Gateshead 10a 663
Burdis Ellen Gateshead 10a 663
Cant Foster Gateshead 10a 663

There is also this Foster CANT who may be same man or different:

Marriages Sep 1863
BLACK Jane Newcastle T 10b 35
Cant Foster Newcastle T 10b 35

And this is where you seem to think (another?) Foster CANY married Isabella:

Marriages Jun 1866
Cant Foster Gateshead 10a 878
Cant Isabella Gateshead 10a 878
Cowley John Gateshead 10a 878
SPEARS Jane Gateshead 10a 878

or did he marry Jane SPEARS?

Bryan

Hello I am writing from Adelaide South Australia. There is a Mary Isabella Cant in my family tree. I don't think it is the one you are looking for because she was born 1861 and was originally a McKinnon and married a John Thomas Cant. I just thought I would say hi anyway
Cheers
Fiona Jean McKinnon Cant

Dave,

the 1861 census has FOSTER CANT living at Hillheads Farm, Killingworth, which is not far from where he died , Westmoor. He is shown as being a coal miner
He is shown as being born in 1846 at Bywell St Peter's, Northumberland.
His father is shown as being Foster Cant, born 1812, at St Johns, Northumberland. He is an agricultural labourer and a widower.
Another son, John Cant, aged 11, a scholar is also still at home, then there is Isabella Cant, Foster's daughter in law, who is 25 years of age, born 1836, who is a widow, Thomas Boyd, 18 years, stepson, William Boyd, 14 years, stepson, Richard Boyd, 11 years, stepson and Mary Boyd, 3 years, stepdaughter.

All the information on the follow ups posted in response to your message seem to pinpoint this gamily as being yours.

Bill Henderson

On these marriage certs--what was the father's name and occupation? What was it on this birth record that you don't think is yours? What do you see on the census records and most likely his mother's name? Nevermind I think she was dead: Death registry Ann Cant 1849 Sept ¼ Hexham 25 233Is this your family?:1851 censusHO107/2414 folio 257 page 12StyfordStybord High BarnsForster Caunt, Head, Widr, 38, Ag labor, Northumberland St. Johnley [St. John Lee]Archibald Caunt, Son, 15, Ag labor, Northumberland HaltwhistleJane Caunt, Daur, 12, Scholar, Northumberland WardForster Caunt, 6, Northumberland KirkwhelpingtonJohn Caunt, Son, 1, Northumberland BywellMargaret Lambert, Serv, W, 45, Dom?, Newcastle St. Nicholas

If you think this was your family then here they were in 1841.HO107/843/11 folio 10 page 14Warden, ChollertonFrankham's ? Cottages [could be Frankham Fell Cottages]Forster Cant,25, Ag Lab, Y [yes born in Northumberland]Ann Cant, 25, YIsaac Cant, 11, YIsabella Cant, 8, YArchibald Cant, 6, YJane Cant, 2, YIf you are a novice at this --just to remind you that in the 1841 census those over 15 had their ages rounded down to the closest divider by 5--so Forster and Ann could be 25-29 years old.

Forster Cant married Ann Mitchellson 13 Nov 1830 in Haydon Bridge. Witnesses were Elizabeth and Thomas Stobart and James Cant Is there a sibling that you could research? to check records against?

There was no set spelling of names back then, also you could call yourself whatever you wanted without legally having to change anything--just be consistant. I would not dispell Forster/Foster so readily. If your Foster/Forster Cant/Kant/Caunt's father's name is Forster/Foster also and the most likely the census is your family then you will find a Foster Cant baptism at St. John Lee 13 June 1802 of Anick s/o Thomas Cant. The Cant name was quite common in the St. John Lee area. Folks from Acomb also used this parish for baptisms etc. This parish did not put mother's names and father's occupation in until some time after April 1812. There is a marriage of Thomas Cant and Isabel Stobart in St. John Lee 14 Nov 1799.

Hope this helps--anywhay it should give you food for thought.

Janis

I am trying to locate and confirm the birth of my Great Grandfather Foster Cant born in 1845 or 1846.
We know that he died in 1927 on the 4th November in the School House at West Moor Northumberland.
We also know that he was married twice in his life.
His first marriage was to Jane Black and his second marriage was to Elizabeth Campbell this was her second marriage also with her maiden name being Snowdon.
When he was born I believe it was in the area just North of Hexham around the Acomb area.
What is confusing is that I have located a birth of a Forster Cant (not Foster) on the 13 Jan 1845 with the father being called Forster also on the birth certificate the mother being a Ann Mitchelson the birth took place at Horn Castle just outside of Kirkwhelpington.
I do not believe that this is my Grandfathers birth record but have not found any other records.
I can confirm the years that he was born in to be 1845 or 1846 because of the dates on his marriage and death certificates.
So if anybody can help me as am I just learning this family tree searching it would be most helpful
Many thanks
Dave Cant
