Trying to find out more about Charles M. Canterbury. My dad was Robert Houston Canterbury 1915-2002. His father was M.C. Canterbury, the C being Charles and the M being Montague. I have come across a Robert Houston Canterbury Jr., born in 1944 and this was a total surprise. Either an amazing coencidence or a well kept secret. Jr's. mother was Elizabeth Aleftina Hicks. *EDITING ORIGINAL REPLY*... I don't have a marriage date or place for Joel & Sarah. (The date I originally posted in case you read this before I had a chance to edit was a possible birth date). My Joseph was born 1804 so I imagine they were married shortly before then.

The only thing, at the moment, that I feel sure of is that I did find a Montgomery, VA marriage record for my Joseph Canterbury that said he was the son of Joel Canterbury.

I also viewed the pension application for my William Canterbury (son of Joseph, grandson of Joel) and found that he was cousin to James L. Canterbury who is the son of Hugh Canterbury. Thus, Hugh and Joseph would be brothers.

There is a Joel Canterbury & Sarah living next to Hugh on the 1850 Gallia Co, OH census. And there is an Isaac Canterbury & Sarah living next to Hugh on the 1860 Gallia Co, OH census.

I have Isaac Joel's kids as being Joseph, James, Nancy, Hugh, Robert, and possibly William. I will have to find my notes though on the connections with James, Nancy, Robert, and William. (Off-hand though, I do know that James' marriage record mentions a Joel Canterbury, there's a Nancy Davis living with Joel on the 1850 census, and a Robert on the 1860 census.)

I have not found a will for Joel in any of the books or records online that I've searched.

*EDITING to ADD* -- If the Joel Canterbury in 1820 & 1830 Giles, Va is in fact "my Joel" (which I think it is), he does appear to have 2 daughters. Nancy fits in for the older daughter (born about 1810). I have no info on who the younger daughter could be other then being born between 1810 & 1820 and most likely married (or died) between 1830 & 1840. There also appears to be at least one son (possibly 2) for this Joel that I do not have a record of...

*Edited for errors* -- I have not found anything on my Joel Canterbury (my ggggg-grandfather) beyond a marriage record for my Joseph which lists his father as Joel and his wife as Nancy Bowen.

Others online seem to have my Joel & Joseph as being a descendant of John Canterbury (son of Roger) who came here from England in the late 1600s or early 1700s. (I've never found any direct sources for that though.)

It seems your Joel & Joseph seem to be regarded as the sons of Asa Canterbury who came from England in the mid 1700s.

Could you tell me the date of the marriage for your Isaac Joel Canterbury and place? Do you have the names of his children, and if so, how do you know them? Presumably you know he was the father of an ancestor, so I'd appreciate how you know that. I feel he's the best candidate to be the father of Mary Adaline Canterbury. Barring known information to the contrary, I'd like to keep pursuing that lead. Finally, did you ever search for a will or probate record for him in Gallia County?

Thanks Heather. I looked up the other Joel Canterbury son of Asa and no one has any dates or other information for him, other than that his father was b. 1720. Since Mary Adaline was b. 1818, I'm thinking Asa probably wasn't her grandfather, since it's kind of unusual for a grandparent to be 100 years older than oneself. The census data line up with Mary Adaline being a son of your Isaac Joel, and Mary was reputedly married in Gallia Co., OH where Isaac Joel lived, so I'm inclined to think that's her father. None of the trees I saw online for him account for a daughter born 1815-1820.

I'll let you know if I find out anything more. Thanks for writing back.

My 3rd great grandmother was Mary Adaline CANTERBURY. She married William Gardner HATTEN on 11 Dec 1836. Mary was b. 4 Feb 1818 in VA. They lived in Cabell and Wayne Cos., VA until the mid 1860s when the moved west. In 1850, there is a Joseph CANTERBERRY aged 40 living in their household. Mary named a son, Joel. There is a girl the right age to be Mary in the household of Joel CANTERBURY in 1820 and 1830. In one census (1870) it gives Mary's birthplace as OH. That's where Joel CANTERBURY ended up (in Gallia Co.). I'd be interested in hearing how you are descended from Joel CANTERBURY and if you have learned anything else about the family since posting this message. Thanks.

Can find a birth record for "Burl" Canterbury born to John Canterbury and wife Minerva on 23 Nov 1873 in Marsh Fork, W.Va. Burrell is on 1900 census, married to Martha E. with children Calvin, Josie and Rena (my grandmother Irene). Burrell is a widower in the 1910 census. There was also a Burwell in the Marsh Fork census around the same time. Trees in Ancestry.com seem to be mixing up the two men. Can't find birth record for Burrell or Burwell.

My maternal grandfather was Harry Raymond Canterbury (12-26-1898 to 5-13-1962), born in Charleston, WV. His mother was Maud Scott (June 1873 to ?) and his father was John David Canterbury (3-12-1861 to ?). John's father was Lewis J. Canterbury (1824 to Feb. 1910) and his wife was Elizabeth Woodward (1832 to 1903). Lewis' parents were James A. Canterbury (1805 to ?) and Ann Fellington (1802 to 6-29-1866).
My mother was Mary Virginia Canterbury Martin (4-27-1920 to 12-20-2008).

My gggg-grandfather, Isham Gwin, whose alleged parents were allegedly born, raised, and married near Jamestown, met and, in or about 1775, married Mary Canterbury, daughter of Samuel Canterbury, in Montgomery Co., VA. Isham and Mary owned 24 acres somewhere on Brush Creek (southerly of Pilot Mountain), possibly near her father's farm. They then moved to east Tennessee (then part of NC) where they settled on a 249-acre farm in Crowson's Cove (today's Wear Valley) in Sevier Co. and lived until just before 1820. They later moved to Harrison, Crawford, and finally Orange counties, Indiana where they appeared in censuses and church records from 1820 to 1850 (he died in 1833, she after 1850). Much more is on our website's several pages starting at www.zianet.com/jmcdgwin/genealogyhomepage.htm. I don't know if she is the daughter of your Samuel Canterbury or not.

Shelby Canterbury was my grandfather. He was married to Rebecca Runyon in 1909. They had 12 children: Andy, Flora, Ruby, Dora, Charles, Sadie, Ernie, Edmond, Calvin, Lawrence, Margaret, and Smithe. Shelby and Rebecca moved to Ohio 1953: many of their children followed. Shelby' father's name was Smithe (1865-1902) and Dora Calgrove (876-1891). She died during childbirth of their 3rd son, James. Shelby dies 8/11/1960 from Black Lung. My grandmother lived off his coal mining pension and Black Lung settlement until she died in 1988 due to natural causes. I hope this helps.

I am very interested in obtaining copies of Reuben Canterbury's probate records from Coles County, Ill., the probate records of his wife, Elzira, the record of their son Rufus P. The Canterbury's in Illinois came here in 1823 from Kentucky, prior to that they came from Virginia, All Canterbury's in America are related. I have an extensive background for the family. There are some holes but it seems they came to America in 1638. Roger and Samuel I think they all stem from these men. Please call if you would like to discuss the family Harry Canterbury. The Missouri bunch left Illinois about 1855 or so and went to Burlington. I think that is your branch.

My grandmother's maiden name was Canterbury, and lived in WV. She died back in 1994, but I don't know much about her side of the family. I do recall being told her father or grandfather was a riverboat captain, or worked on the Kanawha river in some capacity. Not a common name, so there may be some relation.

Her name was Josephine (Canterbury) Gardner, and would have been born in 1912 I believe.

i recently started a job 60 hrs. a week and haven't been able to keep up with my searches. i have copies that i am sending to someone else and would be happy to mail you copies, no money necessary. i am afraid i can't scan. i am related to cynthia canterbury, his sister. she married a sperry and their daughter married theodore jones, which is my last name. however, i discovered that i live 15 minutes away from where reubin and franklin lived in charelston, illinois, so i thought i would look up the information for others. i have found probate records for ruebin, franklin and rufus's wife concerning their daughter as well as a record i think for her mother, who came from a wealthy family in kentucky. it names i think lida's family members and there is a letter from an uncle. i found a map that shows the land that reubin owned and records for his wife and son when they moved to champaign illinois. i haven't looked at these items in several months, but i will get them out. ther is a probate record for goodin canterbury listing his father's name in missouri. i'll check my mail more often, sorry for the delay.

Hello. I do not have this surname on my family tree.

I am offering an FYI. I found a reference to a Nathan D. CANTERBURY owning land in Arlington, MA, in the 1890's.

I checked census information and there was a Nathan D. CANTERBURY living in Weymouth, MA, in 1880. And, an older Nathan CANTERBURY there.

And, there were at least 2 other Nathan's in MA and NH in 1880.

I just checked this Board and the related List, and I don't see CANTERBURY's in MA mentioned in the archives.
