i have the probate records of reuben canterbury of coles co illinois, his wife elzira's probate records, rufus's guardianship papers of his duaghter after his wife lida died, franklin's probate from coles co., his son's guardianship papers, and will be getting records for goodwin's estate, admins. nimrod canterbury. i have the marriage license of lida to rufus p. canterbury and a record of a newpaper he owned part of. there is a record of the paper on microfilm and i will be checking it out to see if he wrote any articles.

Hello. I do not have this surname on my family tree.

I am offering an FYI. I found a reference to a Nathan D. CANTERBURY owning land in Arlington, MA, in the 1890's.

I checked census information and there was a Nathan D. CANTERBURY living in Weymouth, MA, in 1880. And, an older Nathan CANTERBURY there.

And, there were at least 2 other Nathan's in MA and NH in 1880.

I just checked this Board and the related List, and I don't see CANTERBURY's in MA mentioned in the archives.

The 1840 census for Gallia County, Ohio shows a Joel Canterbury and a Joseph Canterbury living next door to each other. Both are from Virginia. Joel is age 60-70. Joseph is age 30-40.

I have been told that "Isaac Joel & Sarah Canterbury" are the parents of Joseph Canterbury.... Does anyone have proof of this? (or know anything more about the parents?)

And is the "Joel" on the 1840 Gallia census the same "Isaac Joel" said to be Joseph's father?

I have been told Joseph comes from Giles, VA. And there is this:

1830 census of Giles, VA lists a Joel, Joseph, Joseph, and James Canterbury.

1820 census of Giles, VA lists a Joel, Joseph, and Jane Canterbury.

1810 census of Giles, VA lists a Joel and Joseph Canterbury.

Does anyone know who the other Joseph is??

Also, I have also been told that Joseph married Nancy Bowen. Does anyone have proof of this?

And, there is a Levi Canterbury in Lawrence Co & Gallia Co around the same time as Joel & Joseph. Levi appears to have come from Monroe County, VA. Does anyone know the connection (if any) between Joel, Joseph and Levi?

J. B. CANTERBURY, was born in County Wicklow, Ireland, in 1837; came to America in 1859; came to Beaver Dam the same fall. Enlisted in the 5th W. V. I. in 1861; served three and a half years; came to La Crosse after the war, in 1865, and commenced the grain business. Mr. Canterbury was married to Miss Katherine May Livingston in 1865; has no children. He is at present grain buyer on the Madison Division of the Chicago & North-Western Railway.

I made a trip to Sevier County last weekend. I found the following [spelling is at it appeared in the court text]

I William Canterbury of the County of Sevier and state of Tennessee being now old and mindful that it is appointed to all men once to die do mak and ordain this to be my last will and testiment in relation to the good thinges of this world withe which it has pleased god to bless me. FIRST. I give and devise to the children heirs of Edward Calvert born of his wife Nancy my daughter to wit Betsey Calvert James Calvert Patric Calvert and Alenander Calvert and also James Toomy my farm called the Calvert place to be eqally divided among them and their heirs.
SECONDLY I give and divise to Samuel Pate and his wife Hannah the plantation I now live on and also the Atchley farm on Milliken to be held and enjoyed by the said Samuel Pate and Hannah during her life and after her death my will is that the two said tracts of land shall go in equal shares to the children of the said Hannah and their heirs.

I allso give and bequeath to the said (Hannah is crossed out here) Samuel Pate and his wife Hannah my slaves Kiziah and her chile Martha also George Henry Preston and Pleasant to be held and possessed by them during the life of the said Hannah and after her death my (death is crossed out here) will is that the intrest and prosperity of said slaves shall vest equally in the children and heirs of the said Hannah. I was told that Will fought in two wars -- Spanish American war and Civil war. Lived to be over 100. And married girl named Transylvania (probably his second wife) Clegg (possibly Clagg), a native american or part native american. At some point they lived in Texas.

He and Transylvania had at least one child name Nora (possibly Evie Nora, or short for something else) who married Fred McBride.

I think he was born abt 1845 in either OH or IL.

Here is a puzzle I have been struggling with for some time. My g-grandmother was Lela Canterburry, born 5 Sep 1894 in Melissa, Collin County, Texas. She married a man named Ball, we believe in Texas. Later she married George Thomas Miller, 11 Jan 1926 in Roswell, New Mexico.

I have her birth and death cerificates. Her father is listed as John Canterburry, born 23 Jan 1875 in Gallioplace, Ohio. Her mother's maiden name is listed as Viva Vaughn, born 1873 in Cass County, Texas. We believe she died in 1935, also in Texas.

My problem? I can't find them on any census. I can find Lela & George Miller and their kids, but nothing showing her with her parents. It's like they appeared out of thin air on her birth certificate. The family sometimes spells her name Canterberry, or Canterbury, but on all the official documents I have it is Canterburry. Even with all that documentation I am stuck stuck stuck on this one. Any info appreciated.

The 1850 Census shows a James H. age 4 in Marion AL in home of Andrew Canterberry. 1850 Census also shows James Henry age 9 in Limestone Co. in home of James Canterbury. 1850 Census also shows James M. Canterbury age 20 b AL living in Bienville Parish, LA. Can anyone help?

Harvey Canterbury is also found in the ELDORA INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL FOR BOYS in Hardin County Iowa in 1895. He is on the 1900 cenus. School records list his father as dead and his mother's residence as unknown.

Frank and Edna CANTERBURY were living on Poplar Street in Sapulpa, Creek county, Oklahoma in 1930 with their two daughters, Eva and Mary Louise. Edna CANTERBURY was the sister of Mrs. Mary "Olive" BROTHERS. Mary "Olive" BROTHERS and her husband, Jim BROTHERS and their sons, Jimmie Brothers and Fred DOYLE were living on Lee St., in the same neighborhhood as the CANTERBURY family in 1930. Jim BROTHERS mother, Jennie BROTHERS had just died in Sapulpa, OK a few months before, in Dec 1929.

Benjamin F. "Jack" Canterbury, 63, son of Bennie F. and Fern Wensenk Canterbury, was born Nov. 9, 1941, at Cabool. He died April 1, 2005, at Lester E. Cox Medical Center South in Springfield.
He married Virginia Grogan Nov. 10, 1962. They had four children.
Mr. Canterbury was a bulldozer operator for his father and others for many years. He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting and camping.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Betty Rose; and one son, Michael Canterbury.

The 1885 Census for Buena Vista County IA list Christopher, Ruth and Henry W. Canterbury. Christopher b. in NY age 32, Ruth b. in NY age 21, Henry W. b. MI age 2. They are living in Providence Township. Christopher is listed as a telegraph operator.

In another record I have from the Eldora School, Joseph Fournier Jr. reports on his record that his 1/2 brother Harvey Canterbury was committed their before him. Joseph Fournier's mother is Ruth Mooney. She married Joseph Fournier Sr. in 1894 at the age of 30. She was b. in NY the dau. of a Methodist Minister.

At the time Harvey Canterbury was born the Mooney family is living in Mason Cnty MI, in 1885 the Mooney family is living in Iowa and the Canterbury family is living in an adjoining county.

I am searching for info. on my g-grandfather and his ancestry.
All info. I have is he used to live and work in Lando Mines, WV. He married Rebecca Runyon. They moved to Ohio in the late 40's early 50's. He passed away in 1960-61. Please e-mail me any info. that can be found. His side has been a mystery to us for a very long time.

I am seeking information about John Canterbury, a veteran of the Revolutionary War (Revoutionary Pensioner File # R1667) who was the first chief judge of the circuit court in Cahawba County, later Bibb County, Alabama. The first record of his presiding over the court was in early 1818. Members of the jury panel included Zachariah Canterbury and Samuel Canterbury.

John Canterbury married Lydia Lindsey (b 1779), daughter of David Lindsey (1740-1842). Canterbury was appointed a "beat captain" in Cahawba county and placed in command of 52 militiamen on June 2, 1818.

I saw some posts here questioning the origins of our family and some references to Kent, England. I can help a bit with this. Canterbury is a small city in the County of Kent in the southeast of England. It is very beautiful farmland and, in fact, looks a bit like the central and eastern parts of Virginia. Canterbury is the location of Canterbury Cathedral which is the seat of the Church of England (and the Church of England is very wealthy and owns much of County Kent).

There is no one that I can find in England with the last name of Canterbury. It is my belief that when our various ancestors came to the colonies, they were referred to as so and so from Canterbury...and Canterbury became their last name. For example, my ancestor who came from England was John Quincey Canterbury. I believe that his name was John Quincey and he was from Canterbury--and he took Canterbury as his last name when he arrived in Virginia in 1640. Quincey is a relatively common last name in England.

I'm sorry it took so long to respond but I lost this email. My grandfather, Vernard was the brother of Hubert (Bessie)Canterbury of Mo.l John Burton Canterbury was his father. I would love to find any info you may have on any of these grandparents. I know that John B.'s father was also John of WV but that is all I really know. John (Sr. was married to Mary Thompson and John B. was born in Mo. 1870. I have a copy of John B. and Mildred's marriage certificate. He died 1852 in Alabama. He married Sarah ? around 1793
They had these sons:
Shadrick E., Samuel, Frank Daniel, William James, Zachariah Caswell.,Nicholas James., John James., Andrew Sylvester.,and one daughter Rhoda Sarah.
All were born in TN except for John J. and Andrew S. and they were born in AL.

I am looking for any information on a Charles W. Canterbury from the West Virginia area. The only other information I have on him was that he fought in the Vietnam War. However, one story is that he was killed in action, and the other has him still living in West Virginia. He disappeared in 1967, and I have found no other information as to his fate.
