Curious to know if anyone has a Henry George Canton in their Family tree? I know between 1909 and 1923, he moved around the Islands and Married and was widowed, before settling in Jamaica in 1923. If you want to see what he looks like I have put his photo on www.ancientfaces.com under the Canton surname. We have avery big family coming from his 2nd marriage in Jamaica, but would like to reunite with family from his first marriage, after all we share the same blood ( well, 50%anyway)

>>George Canton, who emmigrated to NZ with his brother John Canton. George Married a Mary Roberts.<<

This is an intriguing part to the story as far as I can tell because Mary Roberts is the daughter of Elizabeth Griffiths (a ggg grandmother of mine). I think Elizabeth is the sister of Priscilla although I can't remember why I think that - the ages don't seem to quite match up.

Mary's father, James Roberts, was Elizabeth's second husband (her first was welsh man Robert Wynne who died accidentally - in the mines I think when he was quite young).
Mary's half brothers are John (my gg grandfather) and William Win who were pioneering settlers in the Nelson area (Dovedale in particular).
Does anyone have a firm record for Elizabeth's birthplace? I have her born in Wales and also born in Somerset or Wiltshire.

Love to share info but I on only on a free account so I can't see anyone else's stuff unless invited.

Hello again,

Peter Johnson Canton (the grandfather to my great-aunt Annie Canton Odegard) would be Coyla Canton's uncle.

Peter Johnson Canton (1863-1945) was born to Johannes Pedersen Kanten (c.1831-?) and Anne Pedersdatter Haugshagen (c.1841-?) at the Trekanten farm in Gran, Hadeland, Norway.

Peter Johnson Canton married Karen Martia Kanten (1865-1958) in 1885 at Watson, Minn. Karen's parents were Iver Halvorson Kanten (1825-1910) and Anne Guldbrandsdatter Hilden (1826-1908), and Karen was born near Winona, Minnesota.

Peter and Karen's children were:
Iver (1886-?)
John ((c) 1889-?)
Adolph G.

I am not a direct descendant of the Cantons from the Trekanten farmstead in Gran, but Peter J. and Karen Canton's had a daughter Annie Matilda (1903-1955) who married my great-uncle Richard Odegard and lived in the big white house on the main drag in Watson. Richard and Annie had three children, and there are now five of their grandchildren and five great-grandchildren running around, still in Minnesota. Some are in Montevideo but mostly they are in the Twin Cities region. I have done some research into their roots, and have always intended to delve deeper there. Especially because Richard and Annie's daughter Bonnie has been so generous with sharing family photos and other information with me. While I do not recall ever meeting Coyla, I definitely heard the name mentioned by my grandmother Clara Sandbo Odegard and others of her generation.

Please contact me and we can exchange more information. My data can be found at : http://homepage.mac.com/codegard.

I'm sure we are all related. Just can't seem to find the links. My grandmother was adopted in Evansville Indiana in 1893 when she was 8 years old by William Sterret and his wife the same year they married. My grandmother stated she knew her given name was CANTON... but because so many locations in the America's has been named Canton its difficult to find the surname. Have tried every spelling I could imagine. Would be nice to find the link before I die... I ain't gettin' any younger...
Leslie

Maybe that willhelp with your search? I know we had a lot of people emigrate to America during the famine, so we could possibly be related.

Debbie,

I was really happy to see your post. I've been told that I'm a 5th generation Canton and my family origins are from around the Nelson area but I really don't have too much information. My father's name was Barry Canton and my grand parents used to own a dairy farm in Nelson, sorry I don't have their name but I will find out.

Regards,
Michael Canton

Canton's from Watson, Minnesota

Johannes and Anne Kanten had four children that left Hadeland, Norway. Three boys Peter, Edward, Thomas and one daughter Mary. Mary may have kept the Kanten spelling and settled in Boston, MA. The boys settled around Watson, Minnesota. There were already Kanten's in the area so they changed their names to Canton. Edward Canton married Clara Schiager from Canton, SD. They had five children:
Morris (died young)
Gerda (married Herman Norland from Cylinder, Iowa)
Paul (married Pearl Torgerson)
Edward S. (married Rita Schield then Sigfrid Sommers)
Coyla (married Irvin Andrews).
Irvin was my dad's uncle. My parents now live on their farm near Watson, MN. Irvin and Coyla never had any children so I am taking over Coyla Canton's family tree. I have an article on Edward Canton and his brother Peter from History of Chippewa County, MN 1993. Any descendents out there?

Helen Florence Canton/Sterrett m. Latham

Helen Florence Canton was adopted in 1893-4 at the age of 8-9 years by William H. and Mary E. Grismer STERRETT in Evansville, Indiana. She lived out her life in Chicago Illinois and was married for a time to Garnet Latham. She had five children. Helen was my grandmother. She professed to be Cherokee Indian... stating to me when I was a child that her father was Shawnee and Irish and her mother was Cherokee. It is assumed that her parents died perhaps during a Tuberculosis epidemic in Vanderburg County Indiana. The curious factor is that the marriage between William and Mary Sterrett didn't take place until 7/5/1894. Would like to find all the missing pieces of Helen's life. Thanks, Leslie

There was a reference in the Peniston Ancestry that Samuel John Canton's parents may have been John Canton and Rebecca Briggs. I am curious about this as this would also apply to my Julia. Interestingly enough, her 2nd daughter was named Rebecca Briggs Martin and she had a grandaughter with the same name. I can't help but think this connection could be correct.
