Kathy Angel Cahill lives in Northern Westchester County ,NY and all the Paust brothers ( Barry, Eddie, Richie, and Ronnie) have passed away..Aunt Dot ( Dorothy) passed away this year, she was the last of the Cantwells.

There are indeed. In a book compiled and published by Ann Billings and her mother Dortha Sedgwick, the title being Cantwell and Allied Families of AR, AZ, NM, OK, and TX...there are names that come from Kilkenny, Ireland...the de Cantevilles.
Conteville is a later spelling of that family.
In the United States there were Cantrells and Cantwells. These two names in particular are the same family as siblings of a Cantrell just decided to start spelling their name Cantwell.

Would Canfield also be a possible variation of "Cantwell"? I'm trying solve a mystery about an ancestor from Ireland with the surname of Canfield who was said to have actually descended from Cantwell. we have wondered if the name was purposely changed or could it have been a spelling variation?

I've traced this branch of the Cantwell's back to Anthony, b 1801 SC d 1870 Lafayette County, MS. He had 10 kids. His oldest was Elijah, b 1823 TN, d 6/23/1891; Elijah had James J, b 1859 d 1891-1892; and Theodore A, 11/11/1891 d 2/5/1970 was the only child of James J. Anthony had a son James b 1840 TN. Not sure if this was your line or not. I would like to look at your tree and if you could put me in touch with the Cantwell researcher, I would appreciate it very much. Thank you.

And one more thing. That far back you have to determine if your family is Cantwell or Cantrell. During one of those generations, the male siblings just decided to spell their name Cantwell for some reason.

Hello Debbie,
I'm not sure I can help but I am descended from a James (jim) Cantwell b 1854 MO. I think you may have stumbled onto a wall I haven't been able to get around. Odd thing is, I have none of the names you mention save that of James (Jim). Best thing to do is look at my tree to see if you can pick up a trail. I can put you in touch with someone who did a ton of research on the Cantwells as well.
I'll invite you to my tree. My GG Grandfather, Jim Cantwell b 1854 MO was born to William Carroll Cantwell and Nancy Finch. William's father was James Cantwell b 1795 SC d 1860 Denton Texas. This James's father was William Cantwell b 1769 NC d 1836 TN. See what you think and maybe we can figure it out.

From Tipperary, Ellen Cantwell nee Bourke daughter of John Bourke and Mary Fanner, travelled at age about 55 yrs with 6 of her children to Australia 1855. 2 of her children Mary Ann and Martin arrived earlier, as both married in Melbourne, Victoria 1853. I have not been able to find a record for her husband Michael or for his death in Victoria. Daughter Mary Ann married Rody Larkin who I believe also came from Tipperary maybe immigrating about 1849. Rody (Rodger) parents were Andrew Larkin and Bridget Mahar/Maher.

Cantwell family members buried in Massachusetts

In looking for the grave of a Prince family member, I found that the adjoining cemetery plot included Cantwell family members. I was hoping that some names might sound familiar since the daughter of my Prince family member had married a Cantwell. Sadly, none of them sounded familiar. I thought they might be helpful to some looking for other Cantwell family members. I do not know if those whose names are not Cantwell are connected to the Cantwell family, but just that the cemetery listed them in the lot.

The following people were buried in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery. The graves are in Methuen, Massachusetts, but the address of the cemetery is Lawrence, Massachusetts. The name is given, the age, and the date.

IC-F-74 list of people buried in lot as follows:

Ann Cantwell, no age given, Buried: 10/21/1889

Bertha Cantwell, no age given, 05/26/1890

John J Cantwell, no age given, 06/29/1897

William F Cantwell, 29, 07/15/1903

Annie Barry, 34, 08/10/1910

John L Cantwell, no age given, 08/19/1913

Claire V Vandette, 46, 09/08/1967

Leonard O'Connell, 59, 01/26/1970

Augustine X Cleary, 73, 06/18/1973

Augustine X Cleary Jr, 44, 06/19/1978

Evelyn Cleary, 74, 09/17/1981

Dorothea Morrison, 54, 01/12/1982

Sheila A O'Connell, 34, 08/30/1984
Cantwell family, Rensselaer, NY area

I'm trying to find information about the family of my great-grandparents. It's a little bit of a strange situation that I'm trying to sort out.

My great-grandfather's name was Israel J. BARBER (b 1864). He is orignially from the Poestenkill area of Rensselaer county, NY. He was married twice. His first wife (married in 1891) was named Bridget CANTWELL, and from what I've been able to find in census records, she was born about 1859 and died in 1910. I would think that she would probably be from the Poestenkill area herself, or at least from Rensselaer county.

After her death, my g-grandfather remarried a woman from Hoosick Falls named Helen Cecelia CANTWELL.(My great-grandmother.) Yes, she was a Cantwell, too. She, however, was about 25 years younger than Bridget, and 21 years younger than her husband.

I can't help but wonder what the situation is with both of the women being Cantwells. I'm actually wondering if the two women were related somehow.

Are any of these names familiar at all to anyone? Anyone with any Cantwell connections in Rensselaer, NY?

Yes, I see the interchange between Cantwell / Cantrell. I use both when searching but the death certificates state Cantwell and the marriage license is closer to Cantwell then to Cantrell BUT as I said I do use both when searching.

Elijah Cantwell and Ann Melvina Adams Cantwell were born in Tennessee and they are buried in Kempner Cemetery, Kempner, Lampasas, Texas.

Minnie L Huffman and Thomas A? Cantwell had 4 other children in which I have only been able to find 1 (Lottie Lane Cantwell) who married (I believe) a Powell Dalton Taylor. Powell D Taylor was the informant on Lottie's death certificate.

Thanks again.

Debra

I am looking for information on Thomas A? Cantwell born 1865, Mississippi.

Thomas was married to Minnie L Huffman (1873, Texas - 1917, Texas).

Minnie and 2 of their children died in 1917 in Mart, Texas from smallpox.

I have not been able to track Thomas after the 1910 US Census.

Thomas A? Cantwell's parents were Elijah L Cantwell and Ann Melvina Adams. Elijah died in 1891 in Lampasas County, Texas and Ann died in 1907 in Lampasas County, Texas.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have Patrick's death certificate? If he died in Central Islip State Hospital it will indicate so on the certificate. I don't believe you can get the certificate from the State, but you might be able to get it from the Township, especially if you can demonstrate relationship.

My Cantwell's descend from Michael and Alice Cantwell who immigrated to NY in the early 1850s and would not be related to your crowd.

Sheila

I might even have some pictures you've never seen, if you're interested in that.

I don't have any of Price's children filled in...I wonder if you could fill me in from there forward.

My e-mail is HighwaterCowboy@gmail.com

Hi Rick,

It looks like we're in the same generation of Cantwells. I'm the GG Granddaughter James Cantwell & Rachel Narcissa McDonald. My Great Grandfather was John Andrew Jackson Cantwell (b. Aug 25 1876, d. June 1954, buried in Cedar Park) and my grandfather was Price Cantwell. Most of my Cantwell relatives are in Kerrville and Centerpoint and have been there throughout my lifetime (I'm 36).

Reprint of Cantwell-Greene Families of East Tennessee

Inquiries have been coming to me about reprinting the book, Cantwell-Greene Families of East Tennessee that was originally published in 2000. Since the book is 532 pages long, it must have a hard cover, and the economics are such that it is hard to publish a hard cover book with under 100 copies. I have asked the printer for a quote but will not receive it until next week. If you are interested in receiving information about this, please email me privately so I can send you information when I receive it. To do this reprint, I will need to have definite orders before I make a contract. If you have family members who do not have email, please let them know. I cannot send out a mass mailing, but will be happy to send a flyer to someone who is truly interested. hallie.garner@sbcglobal.net

I have records of my line of Cantwells back to the 1600's it becomes complicated trying to follow the various lines. The records I have covers more than one line and I've been attempting to make sense of it all. Pocahontas is an ancestor and some Cantwells will have a Martin form the Mayflower as an ancestor as well. "old" John Cantwell was a Revolutionary War veteran and lived to be 102. I'm willing to share all I have with any who are working on their lines. My personal family settled Erath and Eastland Counties as early as the 1840's.

My 'vanishing Cantwell' disappeared around 1935...went to work, never came home. Lived upper east side of Manhattan, Yorkville section.
I will gladly pass on any info I may come across for Eugene and his mom.
Have you tried the NARA.GOV site? I have requested info about another relative from this site. Not sure what I will get....but its free. You can get military records of all American soldiers from all wars. Might be worth looking into.
FYI - it works best on the Explorer browser.
Good luck to you!

Hah! I have "vanishing" Cantwells as well -- Eugene Cantwell from NYC and his mother Margaret McCarthy Cantwell. I can track him right up to his army enlistment in 1941 and then "poof" he vanishes. There are no WWII related death, POW, MIA, etc. records on him, but I can't find any record of him after 1941. As for his mother, I cannot find any record of her after a mention in a 1931 US directory.

If you find a way to trace your missing Cantwell, I would love to hear about! Maybe it will lead me down the right path to mine!

Good luck!

I do correspond with Ann Billings, the daughter of Dortha Sedgwick and am familiar with the book.
Rick

I am descended from Alexander Kincaid b: 1833 TN who married Mary Catherine Hensley on December 17, 1850 in Lewis County, TN. They had two children: Rebecca b: 1852 TN and Silas Andrew b: 1853 TN.

The Mary you are referring to is apparently Mary Ann Cantwell probably daughter of Samuel Cantwell. She married an Alexander Kincaid who may be the same Alexander as mine. However, the two Marys are different people. I did find an online marriage reference for Alexander Kincaid and Miss Meeky Kincaid or or Miss Merky Kincaid on December 3, 1857 in St. Louis Missouri. Alexander and Mary Ann were in Fannin County 1860 census and it states she was born in Missouri in 1838.

You can contact me at brendaboen@yahoo.com

Brenda Kincaid Boen

Dora Matilda Phillips Cantwell

My great-grandmother, Ruth Cantwell Crider was about 6 years old when her mother died around 1904 - Dora Matilda Phillips Cantwell. All she remembered was that they had gone to Brownwood, Tx., from Kerr County to work and her mother got sick (possibly from small pox) and she died. Ruth had no idea where her mother was buried because she was not allowed to attend the funeral. If anyone has any information on where Dora Matilda Cantwell is buried please let me know. Thank you

Photos of Catherine Everhart Cantwell and her sisters, father

I recently found the attached photos on Ebay. I am not related but they are interesting. The back of the group photo of the sisters contains handwritten identification of those in the photo: Catherine Cantwell, Emma Ballard, Martha McKinney, Jane Stewart, Amanda Hook. "These are my mother's sisters" signed by J.L. Cantwell (believed to be Dr. James L. Cantwell of Bucklin, MO 1861-1950). The other photo is of "Mile Hampton Everhart" grandfather of Dr. James L. Cantwell. Anyone recognize these people?
