Addie Capps Argo

I am looking for any information on Addie Capps Argo. She was born in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas, in 1861. According to census records her mother and father were also both born in Arkansas. She married William "Bill" Capps who was born April 10, 1852 in Warren County Tennessee and died November 24, 1929 in Texas. His father and mother were also both supposedly (according to 1910 census) born in TN. They had two sons Sam Calvin Argo born 1891 in Texas (so Addie and Bill were both here in Texas by that time) and Lewis William Argo born 1904 Texas. They are listed in the 1910 and 1920 census together. Bill dies in 1929 so then Addie and the boys are listed in the 1930 census all in Jefferson County, Texas. So Addie's death was sometime after 1930, probably in Jefferson County, Texas. Since that is so recent it should be listed with Texas records but no one has been able to locate a death record for her.
Addie sounds like a nickname so that may be why I can't find any further information on her. I've tried the most reasonable names it might stand for such as Adaline or Adelaide. Still no luck. It may even be a nickname of her middle name.

I don't have anything on the Capps family. I would like to know more than what I get from the census. I have Archilles in KY, born about 1823-1824 Margaret Frances Dickerson is his wife born about 1826-1828 VA. I have an 1850 census which shows them in Hardin, Suthern Dist.#2, KY and then again in the 1860 census in Breckinridge Co. KY: Reads like this:
A.M Capps 38
Frances-33
Alanson 16
America 14
Florentine 12
Archilles 10
*Catherine 8
Anzonetta 4
Belle 2
Mary 2.12
So can anyone tell me about this Capps family?

thank you so much,

Melody
Cache of old family photos Capps South London/Kent/Essex/ ??Amersham c1900-1960

As secondhand bookdealers all sorts of things come our way: we have a cache of around 100-150 old family photos covering around 1900-1960 but with virtually no information to identify them. However, there are lots of photos of a Raymond born around the end of April 1945 and on the back of one is a pencil name Pte G J Capps (I think - this is very indistinct and could be Coops or Coffy but the BMD index does record a Raymond Capps in the right quarter of 1945 though born in Amersham); there are also photos of the baby's mother Doris, a sister Jennifer, and Doris's sister Georgie. Photographers based in London, Eastbourne and Romford have taken some portraits.

If these belong to anyone's family, send me a message and we can set about returning them to you!

My great grandmother is Lois Capps, she was born April 23, 1913. She has a complete family history on her ancestors. The first one from our family to come to America, was before the Mayflower, I believe it was in 1616, sailing from England (William Capps). Williamsburg, VA is named after him. If you have anything we can colaborate on, email me PrincessHeather@as-if.com thankyou

John Washingon Capps married Ada Orr, not John Walter Capps

I keep finding references online to John Walter Capps marrying Ada Elizabeth Orr. This information is incorrect. John Washington Capps (1 Sept 1876-16 Jan 1940 SC) married Ada Elizabeth Capps. He is often listed as "JW Capps" and his son was JW Jr. The W is for Washington, not Walter!

My source of information is John Washington Capps' daughter, who was able to tell me what the W stood for in her father and brother's names. Additionally, obituary information backs this up. John Washington Capps did have a brother named Walter Capps who married Adie Cappell.

I just wanted to clarify this. Thanks.

CAPPS, James 1828 NC obit

1828-05-24; Paper: South Carolina State Gazette, published as: South-Carolina State Gazette And Columbia Advertiser

James CAPPS, the owner of the land on which the most productive gold mine in Mecklenburg county, died at his residence, near Charlotte, on the 7th instant. Poor old man - his gold mine was his grave! The treasures dug from his land gave employment and subsistence, and even wealth to others, but the proved the death of him who might have profited by them. Anterior to the discovery of his gold mine, he owned but a few acres of the most sterile, and apparently valueless land in Mecklenburg county, which yielded a miserable subsistence to himself and family; but they had stayed on the place, in a half-starved condition for many years. The discovery of the gold mine, however, had a magical effect of the wo-begone condition of the family. No sooner was the old man's pockets well lined with cash, from the products of the auriferous soil, than himself and family plunged into extravagance and excess; and the BOTTLE, that too common resort of those whom affliction has cast down, or some freak of fortune has suddenly elevated to a condition for which nature has unsuited them, cut short the days of this miserably fortunate old man! -- Carolinean

Not my line - just sharing

CAPPS, James, Gold mine, NC, 1828

1828-05-08; Paper: Berkshire County Eagle, published as: Berkshire Star And County Republic

(published in several other US papers)

CAPPS, the man of the Gold Mine.

The owner of the land on which is the most productive gold mine in North Carolina, was prior to the discovery of the mine, a poor man - one of the poorest among the poor cultivators of the poorest soil in Carolina. He had enough to do provide the necessaries of life for himself and family; and he considered himself rich when he had enough to eat. The discovery of the Gold mine, however, altered the state of things; before he was a rich poor man (for he was contented) and afterwards he was a poor rich man. The mine suddenly filled the old man's pockets with gold; and as suddenly, extravagence and dissipation, with their
formidable attendants, took possession of the house, and kicked Economy and sober Temperance out at the back door. The sequel may well be imagined - - while others were pocketing his gold, he killed himself with liquor, and was buried in his Gold mine. Nature seems to have formed her creatures with capacities proper for their allotted spheres, and if by chance any of them happen to stray into those for which they are not fitted, they are apt to act the monkey in a China shop. There are exceptions, it is true, and some seem capable , like the comet of ranging the universe, but they are comets in human nature. Probably no burden would so surely crush a man whose back is not fitted to bear it, as a bag of Gold, the history of CAPPS, the man of the gold mine, above noticed, is an illustration of this remark.

Not my line, just sharing

I do not have all the research books with me here, in my home, they are at my aunt's ranch and I can get some info out of the books I have. I will need names, dates and where they where born and the last place they were.
If I need other info, please leave me your email address or I may try to get a hold of you through here. I am taking over my aunt's geneology since her memory is going. I am going to go back since the William Capps that came from England.
Thank You,
Sue V.

William Capps born 1617

I have one generation missing. All are first name William I think. I have William born 1680 with William born 1617 as his father. I believe there should be a William born 1650 between these two. I can put William (1650) in my tree but lose all the info on them, i.e. wives, children, etc. Would apprciate anyone who might be in this same branch of the Capps family

My great grandfather Ambrose Capps married Eliza Webster in Adair county, Mo. in 1857. I am looking for Ambrose's parents. Another Ambrose D. Capps lived in Clay county, Mo., and this family is probably related. I know this Capps family had relations in northwestern Arkansas, my father lived in Gravitt for awhile as a child, and also in Oklahoma. My father was born in Ryan, Jefferson county, Ok.. Any help at all on this line or Capps in these counties will be appreciated.

He children are: William Capps, Jenny Capps, Polly Capps, Pheby Capps, Annie Capps, Jemima Capps, Jacob Capps, Sampson Capps and Willis Capps. My aunt thought That Sampson Capps was my great-great-great grandfather, William Capps b 1800-1810, but when I looked at their children, Sampson did not have a William Capps child and Jacob did. Anyway I need to find out where he was born and where he is buried. I need ANY info on this guy.
Thank You,
Sue V.

Sampson and Esther Capps

I have been doing research on my gggg grandparents Sampson and Esther, since I live in NC and found that Esther Smith is mentioned in the Encyclopedia of American Quaker Vol.I. the entry reads: Cane Creek Monthly Meeting NC
1797,11,4 Esther Caps (form Smith) dis mou.
Esther was disowned for marrying out of unity.
Disownment for mou usually occurred 3-6 months after the fact: thus taking the disownment date to be the marriage date is erroneous according to Jerry Richmond, Fidonet Gene. Conf. 1995.
She was born 4 Nov 1776 in Chatham Co., NC to Daniel Smith and Pleasant Chancey. This is also documented in Vol. I.
I found a deed reference in the Chatham Co., NC Deeds 1780-1785 Poe Publishers
p. 185 - 12 Aug 1783 - Daniel Smith to William Capps Senr. - 35 pds. - 50 a. on the North Side of Deep River - joins Nathanl. Powell. Wit. John Wilkins, Jonathan Barns, Robert Wilkins. Signed Daniel Smith and Pleasant Smith.
Deep River flows through Chatham and Guilford Co. which leads me to believe that William is possibly Sampson's father. I am still trying to find more on William.
I hope this helps to fill in some blanks to all who are researching this family. Please feel free to contact me by email should you have questions about this information.

There seems to be conflicting info about this individual on the "One World Tree". I have a William P.as being the son of Young J. Capps and Anna Ramsour according to the 1850 MO Census.
Confederate civil war records in MO have him as William Porter Capps. I know it has to be the same Wm P. because he is listed in the same outfit with 2 of Anna Ramsour's little brothers. Now I realize that functionally illiterate, drunken Corporal *#%@ could have had too many shots of whiskey on Wm P's enlistment day, therefore misspelling his middle name, so if anyone has any info that ties William Proctor mar. to Matilda (???) Rogers with my Wm P. I would love to hear from them.

Capps family of Davidson Co., Tennessee

JAMES ALLEN CAPPS, born in Nashville, Davidson Co., TN, 13 Oct. 1825; married, 20 June 1852, MARY ESTHER GARDNER (1830-1869) of Washington, St. Landry Parish, LA. By profession he was a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi. Ten children known:

MARY ANN PAGE CAPPS, b. 1853 [my ancestor]
JOHN DAVIS CAPPS, b. ca. 1855
LUCY CAPPS, b. 1856
ALINE EMILY CAPPS, b. 1858
ORAMEL HINCKLEY CAPPS, b. 1860
JAMES ALLEN CAPPS, JR., b. ca. 1863
THOMAS CAPPS, b. ca. 1864
CHARLES CAPPS, b. ca. 1866
ANNA MARIA CAPPS, b. unk.
MATTIE CAPPS, b. unk.

JAMES ALLEN CAPPS, SR. died on 16 Nov. 1870 and was buried in Washington, LA.

Apart from his birth in Nashville, I have no information on his ancestry, though the circumstances tilt towards Benjamin Capps as his father. My line of reasoning follows: Benjamin is the only Capps in Davidson Co. in the early censuses. His marriage to Mary Moulton in 1810 is the first such notice. (I didn't know of their divorce). The next recorded marriages in the Capps family come a full generation later:Eliza Capps to Jefferson Harman, 1829; Caleb Capps to Tabitha Fowler, 1832; John Capps to America Casbear, 1833; Sally Capps to John Smith, 1835; Robert Capps to Lydia Bess, 1836; Robert Capps (same?) to Sarah Fudge, 1841; and Joseph Capps to Martha Castleman, 1852. Weighing the options, I have adopted the working theory that Benjamin fathered Eliza, Caleb, John, Sally, Robert, Joseph, AND James Allen.

I also propose the hypothesis that BENJAMIN CAPPS is the son (or grandson) of either WILLIAM or JAMES CAPPS, both of whom received large grants of land in Davidson Co. "in consideration of [their] bravery and zeal" as soldiers in the Continental Army, or JAMES CAPPS [see "Land Deed Genealogy of Davidson County, Tennessee," vol. 1: 1783-1792, pp.65, 154.]. However, resolution of these problems will only come from dogged research in the archives and records of Nashville.

Anyone up to the challenge?

Capps and Martha Mercer Compton found in the 1850 Butler Co, AL, Census (siblings are William Friendly, James Harmon,). Richard M also had a daugher, Emma (b 1857), from a second marriage to Mary Thomas in 1855. This is an attempt to either document or eliminate this as a possibility.

Henry Jackson Capps was born 1849/50/51/52, AL (possibly Henry or Butler Co ), d 13 October 1923, Marianna (Jackson Co) FL. He married Anna Eliza Kent (b Oct 1860 Jackson Co, FL, d 1936 Calhoun Co, FL) 28 Octob er 1875

Henry Jackson homesteaded land in Calhoun Co, FL (as did his oldest son, Henry Richard). His land patent was issued in 1902, which puts him on the land at least by 1897. He and Anna Eliza had 15 children:

Ida L b1876
Susan Ella b1878
Henry Richard b1880
Lula Jo b1882
Sherman Randolph b 1884
Cleveland Grover b1885
Martha b1886
James Lillian b1888
Emma b1890
Alton Friendlyb1892
Carlie b1895
George Washington b1897
Coty (or Cody) b1898
Albert Elton b 1900
Lewis Lesley 1903

I've traced my father's family line to a William Capps (born 1822 or so). He was married to Catherine Creech and had five children - John W., Jeremiah, William (of course), Joshua and Zilphia. Once I got to this point (through census data and other sources), I've hit a brick wall. I cannot find any information on this William Capps. Any information you might have would be wonderful. By the way, this was all in Johnston Co. NC.
Artie Capps - Dixie M Smith - Chicago area

My cousin is married to James Capps. He is looking for his mother, Dixie Smith. Dixie lived with Artie Capps and had four or five sons with him. She left the family 50 years ago and most of the boys don't rememver her. James Capps is the oldest of the boys. Their father, Artie Capps died a few years ago and his only son Eric Capps committed suicide two years ago. Someone recently told James his mother was still alive although they wouldn't tell him where she was. He wants to see her again before they die. Please help. Does anyone know of Dixie Smith. I'm sure her name isn't Smith anymore and we were also told she had another family. I would love to give him the gift of family by father's day. Thanks.
