Sue, I live in Raleigh, NC near the archives and have been looking up records for another Capps descendant. If there are specific records you'd like me to search, contact me.
We are researching Riland/Ryland Capps/Capts born 1814 in NC, possibly in Currituck County, NC. His parents were J. and Sarah Capts. Still looking for records for his father's first name.

Heather

Have you tried FamilySearch.org. It is free and has a lot of information. You can also go to the closest LDS Family History Center and they have people that will help you and they can access Ancestry.com and many other records. They won't try to convert you so don't be afraid. Also, just try putting the name you are searching in your search pane (Google, etc.) A lot of times people share information on blogs, free websites, etc.

And yes my grandmothers name was Florence Powell and my father was James Page Capps and he was born in Freeman Va Brunswick County. You got it right on. Freeman Va is where he lived. When my grandfather died my father inherited the farm, sold it, and my grandmother built a new house closer to Emporia. It went something like that anyways. Inbetween all that my father was also drafted into Vietnam, that when he divorced his first wife and left my half brother behind. When he got out of service he met my mother somehow, married and had me, and my younger brother. 10 years later they divorced and he married Brenda Tipton from Chase City Va. Now they live in the city of Emporia. I live in Keysville Va, my Mother Shirley Mae Hendrick and my younger brother Jason Allan Capps live in South Hill Va.

Thanks so much again

My grandfather was a Capps and was from the Asheville area, not exactly sure what part nor even his first name. He died before I was born and I'm almost 40 now. All I know is he moved to Emporia Va probably in the 40's maybe 1950 and married my grandmother who was a powell from the Freeman area on hwy 58 between Emporia and Lawrenceville Va. Me and my father have not talked in years and even before then he wouldn't tell me much. I never was introduced or taken to the area where my grandfather was from but would love to know something about the family tree. Would love to visit the area maybe even move there. I never really liked southside Va too much. Does anyone possibly know who I may be talking about?

I am in search (verification) of my gggggrandfather William M Capps parents. Per the 1850 US census, my William M Capps was born about 1809 in NC, married Mary Echols, had 8 children, and lived/passed (~1870) in Jefferson County, AL.

Several member trees show Samson A Capps and Ester Smith as his parents. However, researching this lineage indicats that thier "William Capps" married an Anne Cabbage and both passing in IA ... none of which is consistent.

I keep hitting a brick wall and am in need of some help.

So far, I have what most people seem to have, the David K Capps journal references, which are not conclusive. There is an English & Wales Christening record for a Thomas Capps, born abt 1723, christened 20 May 1723, in Cromwell, Nottinghamshire, England. Father's name is listed as Thomas and mother is listed as Mary. I have no proof this is the right person. However, if this is the right person, then it would correlate to the DK Capps assertion that Thomas Capps of NC was the first of the family to live on this continent. This means that looking for records prior to 1745 is probably a waste of time, and location in NC could be anywhere. The 1755 NC tax list from NC Early Census Index, in Ancestry as NC Census, 1790-1890, places a person of this name in Beaufort, NC, age 30, which would be about right. That same index shows him in Beaufort Co., no township, in 1764.

I contacted the Owsley Co., genealogy society and they looked into his death in Owsley Co. They could not find a death record of any kind on Daniel. They did verify the following: Census Database as ref: Daniel D.B. Capps - born 1818 in Grainger Co., TN was the son of John Capps living in Owsley Co., KY in 1850 and 1860. Daniel was the "Circuit Clerk" in Owsley,KY from 1856 until Arch McGuire took office in 1862. Also, I have run accross some other info from a journal written by David Kenney Capps 1874-1885. Have you found out any other info. on the Capps'.

I'm doing some research on the Headrick family in Dent County, Missouri. Specifically, America E. Headrick (b. 14 February 1874, d. 22 March 1906. According to the 1900 Census her name had changed to America E. Capps and was married in 1893. At the 1900 census she was living with her mother and two of her brothers. What I'm trying to find is the name of the Capps that she married and any history on him. Any suggestions on where to look?

I don't know anything about a J. Jackson Kilpatrick. My family line is through John Coggins and Mary A. F. Capps daughter of Samuel and Caroline (Wilkinson)Capps. I suppose it is possible as quite often people don't record marriages that don't have to do with direct descendancy or any information on siblings. My information came from my cousin and someone else confirmed a while back.
