No, this is definitely not my James. My James was a drummer in the Black Watch who saw action in the Crimean War. He died and was buried in Malta in 1855. He left behind a wife and two children in Aberdeen, Scotland.

There are so many Cardens, and there are quite a few named James and John who were in the military. I know there are many from the Irish branch (that originated in England), but I suspect that my Irish connection was simply because John was in the military; after all, only one of his three children was born in Ireland.

Thanks for the information, though! You never know... it might tie into my family somewhere else down the line once I've found a few more connections.

I think that James might be a bit too young to be my John's father. Let's see... age 70 would mean he was born in approximately 1771, and my John was probably born in the 1780s (judging by the age of his wife, who was born in 1785). James could, however, potentially be John's brother (making him Matilda's uncle instead of her grandfather). Oh, how I wish the 1841 census had included relationship information!

Further to my posting a few minutes ago, the following rather odd entries, all for Spotland Lancs, appear in the 1881 census. Presumably Bridget and James were siblings, living in nearby dwellings.
Bridget, Unmarried, b Ireland 1828+, Sister in Law of Head, John Lord
James, Married, Head, b Ireland 1820+ Stone-Breaker
Margaret, Wife, b Ireland 1816+, House Duties.
Could this be your James?

Matilda, his second child, appears in the 1841 census as perhaps you know. Living at Glebe Lane St Margarets, Ipswich (HO 107 1043/7 fol 73a). The household consisted of James CARDEN 70 Collector of Excise, Maria do 30, Matilda do 25, Ellen do 25 and Harriet RICKET 20 Female Servant. Doubtless the ages were rounded down. Do you suppose this James was her grandfather? I have been trying to identify him for very many years and would be most grateful to hear of anything you can add.

John Carden of Woodbridge, Suffolk, England

I am trying to trace my ancestor, John Carden (also spelled "Cardin"), but as he was in the military and moved around a bit, it's proving to be rather difficult.

He was married to a widow named Lucy Foster (m.s. Fryett) in 1812 in Woodbridge, Suffolk, England. John was supposedly from Woodbridge. He belonged to the Royal Horse Artillery and was a corporal at the time of his third child's birth in 1818. His first child, John, was born in Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1812; his second child, Matilda, was born in Christchurch, Hampshire in 1815; his third child, James, was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1818.

I have not been able to find any records for John (the father) in Woodbridge, which makes me wonder if he was born elsewhere and was merely settled in Woodbridge for a time.

I would like to find out where and when John Carden was born and who his parents were. Family stories say the family was Welsh, but I can't find any evidence of this (it may be a clue, though). If anyone can help me out with this, I'd be grateful!

Joseph, Isaac, Isaac Greene, Roscoe, and Richard (me). Most of my more recent ancestors lived in either Monroe or Summers Counties, WV.

Ring any of your genealogical bells?

Dick Carden

That was the info Nils sent me. Also in touch with Robert Glenn Carden, eye dr., in Alabama, who says this is his branch. After the Robert and Elizabeth, is a son Robert m. Nancy Haynes, and I think this is Rob's side. There seems to be 12 children from this union, with Robert m. Nancy as the oldest child, Dicey, Judith, Elizabeth, Larkin, Leonare, Anselm, William Thaornburgh, Sarah Hazeltine, John B., Rebecca, Goldman Benton; if I am reading this correctly. I'll e-mail you Robert Glenn's e-mail address, if you would like to confer with him. Thanks. Do you know anyone else from this side?
I seem to see Leonards along that line.

I have always thought that Leonard Carden, who is reported as being the son of Robert Carden and Elizabeth Robards/Roberts, is really a son of John Carden of North Carolina. You might want to investigate that. My reasons are based on the naming of his children, and the fact that there is no son of his named Robert.
Chuck

Robina Vashti Whitlow. I don't know where the name came from, except in the Book of Esther in the Bible. King Xerxes' first wife's name was Vashti. She refused to do what the king wanted, so he banished her from the kingdom.

John Calvin Carden m. Robina Vashti Whitlow-daughter of Charles Walker Whitlow and Catherine Bethathalon Moseley-daughter of William C. Moseley and Rebecca M. Johnson-daughter of William Rev. War Johnston and Rebecca Moseley-Wm. Rev. War Johnston-son of Thomas Rev Johnston and Sallie Adamson.

One of John Calvin Carden's granddaughters is named Irma Vashti. This is a descendant of he and his second wife (sister to Vashti) Rebecca Pope Whitlow Carden. One of Charles DePriest Carden's descendants is a Vashti. Robina and Rebecca were sisters of his wife, Zora Bibb Whitlow.

Other names that have been handed down in the Whitlow family are Judson, Stratton

Do any of these names mean anything to you? What is your ancestry in the Carden Family?

This message is for Trish. I've been trying to get ahold of you about the letter and the person who found it.
Tried both e-mail addresses, but they came back undelivered. Hopefully you are still on this website.
I had lost this website for several years, and have now gotten back on it and trying to catch up.
Need contact for Melanie, if you still have it.
Any info on the aftermat of the Civil War vets, etc., as my gg-grandfather, John Calvin was one (not in letter), as was 4 other brothers, George Henry (in letter), Peter (in letter; a doctor), Charlie/Charles Depriest (in letter), James Benjamin (not in letter). The Sallie is their sister, children of John and Elizabeth (Ma in letter; and she had a sister, Nancy)Smith Carden mill owner. I may have found the other people mentioned or whom I suspect could be them; children of Robert DePriest Carden, older brother of John. Ann possible Susanna. Please contact me on this. Thanks. P.S. Robert D. is the ancestor of Branch Jackson Carden, Jr. and Nils Haag (the two instrumental in getting the Carden genealogy to what it is for my side.) RIP both of you. Know you work is much appreciated and welcomed!

The info I have is from Branch Jackson Carden, Jr. via Nils Haag. I have a Robert Carden V (1723-1810), second wife Elizabeth Roberts (1760-1810)who are the ancestors to Robert Glenn Carden in Alabama. They had Robert, Dicey, Judith, Elizabeth, Larkin, Leonard 1793-1857 (married #1 Tabitha Peace). Is this your line?
I am descended from (John I 1555, John II, Robert I, Robert II, Robert III) Robert IV (first wife unknown), James m. Sarah DePriest, John (mill owner in Halifax County, VA, John Calvin, Warner Calvin, Robert Judson Carden-my dad. On Cook Family Tree the two first Johns have wives named; just don't have it on my info as yet. Nils also has our line posted on Rootsweb and Ancestry, but he didn't get to put in all my info. My John (1802-1864), mill owner, was the youngest brother to Branch and Nils' ancestor Robert DePriest Carden m Jenny Howery. They lived in the Roanoke/Radford area in Western VA. Nils and some others are of a difference of opinion on the James, son of Robert IV and first wife. Nils presented his reasoning in another website, and I have to agree with him, especially since many of the descendents have the middle name DePriest. John, mill owner, had a son, Charles DePriest Carden from Halifax County, Va. Hope this helps.

I'm searching in my genealogy to find out who Ann is that Sallie is writing to.
Think I may have some info on this.
How can I get in touch with Melanie Huber, the person that shared the letter? This is my family; Sallie being one of the sisters of my gggrandfather John Calvin. He was not mentioned in the letter, but his brothers, Henry, Charlie/Charles, and Peter are mentioned. Another sister Elizabeth married a Phillip Johnson, and they lived in the Bedford area. I also have a Hudson in my genealogy, on my father's mother's side. You are welcome to e-mail me if you would like. Thanks. Sorry it has taken me so long to see this entry!!
Hi
Thanks for responding. In previous discussions with a few Carden researchers it's my understanding that most of the Carbondale Cardens were from the County Mayo side of Killala Bay?
My Carden family was from County Sligo near Corballa. I found my gggrandmother's ( Mary Carden) baptismal record and some of her siblings. John Carden of Archbald was her brother and she had a brother James who I hadn't researched. I was wondering if the James Carden, born 1843, listed in the 1880 Carbondale census could have been her brother. Would you have any info on this Carden family?
My James Carden's parents were James & Catherine Carden.

Thomas Francis Carden was born 9 April 1871 in Carbondale, PA) to James Carden, an Irish immigrant coal miner and Mary Barrett, a Carbondale native.
Thomas married Mary Hanley about 1899 and had 5 children I know of:
Matthew Hanley Carden (born abt 1900)
Mary Carden (born about 1902)
Barbara Carden (born about 1903
James Carden (born about 1905
Thomas Carden (born in 1906 and died as an infant in 1907)
In 1900 Thomas was at his father James' home at 40 Scott St. in Carbondale with his 1 year old son Matthew when the census was taken, but may have been living in Mayfield, PA (a small town boardering the south of Carbondale). I have not found Mary in that census.
In 1902 Thomas bought the family home on Scott St. from his father James for $1.00, just 6 weeks before James died.
Mary Hanley died in Scranton, PA on March 30, 1908.
In 1910 Thomas and his 4 children were living on Scott St. in Carbondale. Thomas was working in the coal mines as a laborer.
By 1920 Thomas and his 2 sons had moved to Detroit and were living together in a hotel at 151 Bagley Avenue where Thomas worked as an oiler.
I have not found Thomas in the 1930 census.
By November of 1945 Thomas had moved back to Mayfield, PA when he died.
I hope this helps your research a bit. Thomas is my great-grand uncle, the brother of my great-grandfather Patrick Carden.
Hi Marge,
I'm quite familiar with your John Carden family page. He was my gggrandmothers brother. Mae Carden was not John's daughter and missing is a son, Bernard born 1859 and died 1900. Mary(Mae?)Carden married Richard Barrett on Nov 4,1903 The 1910 census lists her as May and in the 1900 census there is a May Carden living in Carbondale.

In the 1900 census May's mother was Ellen a widow. In the 1880 census there was an Ellen married to James, b-1843 Ireland. John Carden had a brother, James b 1843 ireland who may be the James listed in the 1880 census?
My Carden's came from the Killala Bay area of Ireland.
Jack

You may be interested to know that a descendant of Baldassare Viscardini, who was an immigrant to Britain and a cabinet maker in London by 1881, also changed his name to Carden in the 1920's. I have always supposed he chose the name because there was a prominent Carden family living nearby, but I wonder if Calderone and Viscardini knew each other and influenced the choice of name. I will be glad to provide more information on request.

Looking for family members of my husband. His Grandfather and Grandmother were from Italy. They came here around 1920. Grandfather Joseph (Guisepe), Grandmother Caterine (I think). They changed the name to Carden. They settled and raised children in the Oakmont, PA area and later moved to California with one of his grown sons. One of the boys was Frank (my husband's father). He know who his father's brothers and sisters are, but he would like some info on his Grandfather's siblings and parents in Italy. They would be Calderones.

The 1867 Personal Property tax of Albemarle Va. shows 3 African-Americans with the surname "Thomasson" are at Levy's (being Monticello or the Washinton farm). By the 1870 census they go by the surname "Thomas". One of the 3 guys gets married post civil war and names his mother as "Franky". It turns out that Sarah Thomasson widow of Byers left a Rev. War pension application and a list of slaves headed by "Franky" and the children below her are the same 3 names at Monticello in 1867. Turns out two children of this Sarah married Cardens being children of Youen Carden. The Monticello website has Youen Carden working for Thomas Jefferson 1808-1828. Wm F. Carden (son of Youen m. Catharine Thomasson in 1821, and John Thomasson m. ---- Carden I believe it was 1821 also.

Hello, my name is Pat O'Brien and l live in Ireland
My family are decendents of David Carden born in Ballina Co. Mayo. You can research the Cardens in the 1901 and 1911 Census's which is free if you log into National Archives Ireland. You will see that the Cardens all originate on the Border lands of Mayo and Sligo. There are no other Cardens in Ireland except for the wealthy landowners of Tipperary which are not relations of the Sligo/Mayo Cardens as far as l know.

John Carden 26 embarked at Limerick to New York on 21 April 1851 on the Ship E Dennison.

The story our family tell is that David Carden (my father-in-laws grandfather) is either a son or grandson of a French soldier, a groom. We don't know if this is true but given that there are very few Cardens in Ireland and all are clustered around the Mayo/Sligo region of Killala Bay it seems reasonable to believe it as on August 22nd 1798 a small French invasion force commanded by General Humbnert beached at Kilcummin Head on the west shore of Killala Bay in Co. Mayo. It can easily be found on internet sites....hope this helps, best regards, Pat.

I, too, couldn't help from replying, as I also have a Dr. Joseph W. Carden in my family; he was a physician living in northeastern Tennessee in the late 1800s. Are we cousins?

Dick Carden
