Hi WACARDER

You wouldn't happen to know where the Putnam, Ohio Thomas Carder was from would you? I am descended from him and my cousin who did our family tree has made this same mistake - it always looked a little odd to me. Also, thanks for the link to your website.

M.

I have to agree with Sammy because I don't have any record of a Lawrence in Honey Grove or Thaddeus living in Mena, Arkansas. All of my records suggest that the Elliott and Carder families migrated over time from South Carolina and settled in the general area of Bonham and Hunt County. Prior to South Carolina, they were probably in Virginia.

There is a Burket (Berket} Carder that married a Nancy Hawkins in 1805 in Virginia. Since your Burket had a son named Eli Burket Carder it is quite possible that the name was passed on from generations and those may be his parents. I am not saying I am right, it is just a guess but it can be a path to look at because more than likely they are someway related

I'm trying to work on the ancestry on my husband's side of the family, and I've hit a bit of a wall. The most distant I can find is Burket Carder (b. about 1833) noted in the 1860 census to be living with a Peter Carder (brother?) and WS (male) and E (female). There is about a 40 year difference in age between E and Burket. I don't know if this is his mother and father or if this is perhaps grandparents that he is living with. Does anyone have any more information on this family line? Could this be William and Eliza? I've been looking at some other census records of a family with those names, but can't find Burket listed as a child at any point.

I do know that Burket was reportedly born in Virginia. Since I'm quite new to this, would I have luck contacting the state records department to look for a birth record in this timeframe?

Thank you!

Re: Carders in Ohio from Virginia..George Carder b. 1777

The 1758 George Carder is an error that has been propagated for years. It was just a guess by someone who had not really done any research, and then it was propagated as fact.

There were three George Carders in Hampshire County, WV in the late 1700s / early 1800s. One was William and Sarah's son, and he was born in the mid 1770s based on tax records. He left and went to Ohio at the same time as his parents (I think around 1798), and married Jane (Jenny) Ross. The other two George Carders were father and son, born around 1750 and 1776, and they came to Hampshire County, WV from Culpeper County, VA after 1801. This George Carder family was related to the William Carder family. The 1750 George and William were closely related, maybe brothers or cousins, but no documentation has been found to prove the relationship. William Carder's son Abbott's children and my grandfather's father's generation (descendants of the 1750 George) visited each other (they lived about 5 miles apart) until the early 1900s, and always referred to each other as cousins.

The 1758 birthdate of a George Carder as son of William should be erased from anyone's records. I knew the person who came up with this date just by guess and spread it around. He is now deceased, and was speculating back in the 1960s and 70s that my ancestor George was a son of William, but my research has proven that they were not father and son, and that another younger (1777-ish) George was the son of William, and that George left and moved to Ohio before my George came to Hampshire County.

Hope this helps. I did extensive research and wrote a 350 page book on the Carder family in 1992.
Hello:
George Carder was my Uncle. He lost touch with the family after he moved away. We hadn't seen him since his mothers funeral in 1979. I do know someone in the family who would like the slides if you still have them. His brother Robert (my father died in 2002). His sister eileen passed away about two years ago.

I am married to Glenn Robinson, son of the Clarence Robinson that you mention and Grandson of Luther Carder Robinson. The best I can tell Mary Carder Robinson was the sister of Luther Carder's mother (can't remember her name right now). Luther's adoption was informal and he took the name Robinson later.

Hello, I am the granddaughter of Nancy Robinson Davis. She did indeed marry John W. Davis and had three sons, Thomas F., Robert W., and Harry H. and one daughter Matilda Elizabeth who was my mother. Mom died in 2007 at the age of 92. She had a wonderful memory and told us many stories. I remember my grandmother very well and I remember visiting her relatives in Cumberland, MD., her sister Margaret's fammily and her brother Ike's family. Would love to share information. I have also contacted her brother Clarence's son, received information from his wife today.
