Hello, Amy,
I am so happy to have found your post. Of course, it's more than 10 years old, so I hope this reaches you.

You and I are 2nd cousins 1x removed. Your grandmother, Harriet, was the daughter of my grand aunt, Theresa (Miller) Zugschwerdt. Theresa was the sister of my maternal grandmother, Millie (Miller) Rahn of Lanark, Ill. I have several pictures of Theresa, her parents, her siblings, and her husband Frank Zugschwerdt. I would be very happy to share them with you, especially if you don't already have them in your photo collection.

Harriet was three years older than my mother, Beatrice (Rahn) White, and they had a lot of contact over the years while your grandmother still lived in Carroll Co., Ill.

Theresa and Frank are buried in Chadwick Cemetery, which you probably already know, and I have photos of their grave markers that you may like to have if you don't already.

It's always so wonderful when I run across a cousin who's also interested in family history. I've found several cousins over the past couple of years, but it's difficult to get them interested in the family tree if they're not already involved with it. So I'm doubly happy to have found you!

I look forward to hearing back from you. I would like to share photos and info back and forth, as I have some gaps in my tree concerning your line.

Best regards,
Sheila Hughes
Tucson, Arizona

Amy,
Sorry but my line is not the William Finch line. My line is the Maryland 1792 to Marion County,Ohio 1830 to Dewitt County, IL in abt 1850 to Traill County, ND in 1910. My William was born March 13, 1792 in Dorchester County, MD and died in DeWitt County, IL April 27, 1883. He is buried there in the Wilmore Cemetery and I have pictures of his headstone and that of my gg and great grandfather in DeWitt County. I also have numerous newspaper articles from DeWitt County in the mid and late 1800's. Sorry I can't help on your line of Cardiffs. I do have a family bible with pictures from the 1800's. I also have obtained pictures from a Cardiff/Harrold album. Kitura Harrold was my gg grandmother.
Good luck on your ventures.
Gary

I am also connected to the William Finch line. I have heard mention of a "Cardiff Family Bible" being on display somewhere. Is that where the above photo was found? According to a post I found online the Bible I refer to made mention of Edward Austin Cardiff's marriage to Latrobe Sellon Cardiff. Edward was one of William Finch's sons. It also included William Finch Cardiff's obituary. Does this mean there is a connection between us?
Thanks,
Amy Cardiff Morris
Illinois

Hello Pat. I have a list I found long ago and just refound recently of William Finch cardiff and Catherine Sipes cardiff's children and it does not list an Ebinezer. Do you have abirth year? I'm sure there must be a connection since they were all from PA. Do you know what part of PA Ebinezer is from? William Finch lived in Fulton County. He was born in West Hanover in Dauphin County in 1821. Perhaps Ebinezer could be a brother or nephew? Let me know if you find a link and I will do the same for you.

Hi Amy! You're still the best!

So, was Edward supposed to be Ebenezer? Or was Ebenezer another dude? I know they called him "Eb" at times.

I guess if you have a number of different first names, at least it's easier to go alley-catting around making families in different places! But maybe this should be forgiven, as the War was hell, and peope must have thought the world was coming to an end, etc.

But I'm starting to cotton to the idea that his dad was William Finch, and that Frank was his grandfather.

Pat

Well, I think anything would be helpful at this point.
The Pennsylvania Cardiffs are, as far as I know, researched back to Ebenezer, my great grandfather, who leaves and goes to Galva, Illinois after the War of Southern Aggression. One of Ebenezer's sons was Richard, one of Richard's sons was William Joseph, and one of William Joseph's sons was me. (I hate to seem so self-centered but it's only for brevity.)
It's Ebenezer I know little about. I want to think William Finch Cardiff was Ebenezer's dad, and that Ebenezer or Ebenezer's BROTHER fought with Ebenezer in the War of Succession.
Last year I went to Ireland and did find Cardiffs in Dublin as it is an ancient patronymic HOWEVER, these Cardiff first names are clearly anti-Catholic (obviously so, as if protesting against the Establishment) and so indicative of a willingness to repudiate, in the New World, the Catholic faith. Can we then say, these people were Scots-Irish, or Welsh Irish and dismiss the connotations that kept the Irish prisoner to religious strictures even after the potato famine of 1847?
If I had the surname Cardiff back then, and Cardiff was the capital of Wales for a very long time, I think I would be pretty damn proud to carry around that last name. As if I came from Cardiff Castle. I don't know if I would allow it to be sullied by association with the poor Irish who had no choice but to leave the island.
But facts are facts, and who married whom is a matter of record.

As I believe we discussed before, we probably have some relation but I have not been able to uncover it. I keep looking on Ebay and Google hoping that one may turn up, but your message is the first time I have heard of a Cardiff Bible. The John Richmond and Charles C.Cardiff families are still looking for William Finch Cardiff's Father and Mother. A bible would be wonderful to find. Please let me know if and when one is found.
Sincerely,
Lynn Helms Cardiff

I want to thank you for the information. There is little known about Nancy, not even where she died for sure. Rev. James Wallace however died in Sugar Creek, Greene Co., Ohio. His daughter Elizabeth was my GG Grandmother. I do not even know if there were other children. What I do know is that James Wallace's middle name was Perry and my Grandfather was James Perry also. I received a pamplet from a Cardiff that has quite a bit of old information in it about the original Christopher Cardiff. If anyone is interested. It was written about 1907.
Hi Arlene,
I believe that Lee Cardiff was the son of W.L. (William Lee) Cardiff son of John Wesley Cardiff born 22 Nov 1833. I have a partial obituary around the early 1900's from Fairbury, NE. It was in the Cardiff family bible that I now have. It is unidentified, but references a son W.L. Cardiff living in Oklahoma City at the time. John Wesley's father was William Cardiff b. 1790 in Maryland. John Wesley's brother was William Henry Cardiff b. 25 Jun 1836,my gg grandfather. I have all this documented. If you would like to contact me my email is gjcardiff@comcast.net

Re: William Finch Cardiff and parents

Dear Eric C. (redhunter), Amy Cardiff Morris, and Lynn Cardiff,

Hi, relatives (maybe – well, we’re all related, right?)!

I am no sexist – just using the male line to be efficient (since our culture generally passes male names that way, it’s the data we have). The point is to eventually fill in the female line when we get the baseline info, right? So please excuse this male-focused process for now.

The parents of William Finch Cardiff probably lived in Pennsylvania. There is lore that they had a dry goods store in Cardiff, Maryland, on the Maryland, PA border.

We are searching for the names of the parents of William Finch Cardiff, Captain in the Civil War (Company B. 3rd Maryland Volunteer Infantry), born April 10, 1821, originally of Fulton County, PA, married to Catherine Sipes. Those two produced, at least, two sons, John Richmond Cardiff, and Edward Austin Cardiff. Edward Austin Cardiff was in the Civil War with his father, although very young, served in the Cavalry (22nd Pennsylvania Volunteers Cavalry Company H.).

Edward Austin Cardiff married Irene Sellon Latrobe (or Latrobe Sellon?) and had at least three males, Ira Dietrich, William Edward Cardiff, and John Richmond Cardiff. Edward Austin Cardiff and Irene Sellon Latrobe also had 5 daughters – Amy Jessie, Bess, Nell and one other.

John Richmond Cardiff had Charles Cromwell Cardiff (real Irish name, that!). Charles Cromwell Cardiff had Hal Victor Cardiff, the husband of Lynn Cardiff, and our Texas connection. Lynn is looking for William Finch Cardiff’s father too, and a hint was “Old William.” May I suggest that this is a lengthened form of the name “Oldham.” My dad has mentioned this name occasionally as a potential source of our ancestry. Oldham has come up in many of my searches, a prominent name in PA history.

Ira Dietrich married Myrtle Sherman. Ira Dietrich and Myrtle Sherman had Edward Cardiff. Edward Cardiff married Ethel Huntington. Edward and Ethyl had at least three sons: Robert, Edward and Douglas. Douglas is your father, Eric.

William Edward Cardiff had a son named William Frank Cardiff, and William Frank Cardiff is the father of Amy Cardiff Morris. This is the Galva, Illinois connection. Amy, if you could send me that paper you wrote on William Finch and Edward Austin, I would be very grateful. It would be asking so much to email the scanned photos, and you’d probably think I’m crazy asking for what you’ve digitized from the diaries – I’ll stop there.

That leaves me. I know I had a grandfather whose name was Richard Nathaniel Cardiff, and his father’s name was Ebenezer. My father is William Joseph Cardiff, his brothers are Richard (in Rohnert Park, CA) and Thomas (dec.). I find it unsettling that after all the words said about my past, all the hints and indications, I’m nowhere closer to understanding who even my great-grandfather was. I lived in Africa for some time, and if I told someone I didn’t know much about my father’s father’s father, they’d think I come from another planet.

Please, if you find any mistakes in what I wrote, just a quick email would be great.

Otherwise, good luck!

Pat

Patrick Cardiff, Economist
Bureau of Economic Analysis
1441 L Street NW
Washington, DC 20230
(202) 606-9227

alt. email pcardiff@att.net

We are both looking for an "old William" as he was called by our family. The only records I have is that this "old William or Frank" had a son by the name of William Finch Cardiff, born April 10, 1821 and served as Captain of Co. B, 3rd Maryland Reg. He and his wife Catherine Sipes had a son named John Richmond Cardiff who went to Louisiana to farm rice.

We have always been told that our Cardiff's first settled in Canada. There were four brothers. three brothers went N and one brother went South. Haven't proofed a word of it. Just can't find that William or Frank Cardiff born about 1800 and married a lady by the name of Elizabeth.

We must keep looking. One thing for sure. I know we are all related to one missing link or two. Let's keep up the search.

Amy! So glad to have found you once again!!!

I will call and give you my address. I am so excited to read more about Edward Austin Cardiff and William Finch Cardiff and the Civil War.

One thing that I don't understand is this.....If Edward Austin was in the war as was William Finch Cardiff, they were years apart. William Finch Cardiff was born on April 10, 1921. He was over 40 when he served in the War.

John Richmond Cardiff was born on Oct.7 1848. 12 years before the beginning of the Civil War. Edward Austin was born a few year before or after........Was Edward only around 14 years old when he served in the Civil War?

Guess you have not found the Father of William Finch Cardiff........I hear he was named William or maybe Frank. I have heard or read that he was married to an Elizabeth.

One day we will find the father of William Finch Cardiff.

I will call you tomorrow.

So happy to have heard from you once again.

Lynn

I am uncertain that Frank was the name of the father of William Finch, but have been lead to think that.

I think I have cooresponded with you before. Are you of the Texas Cardiff's? I am Amy Cardiff Morris. I am Edward Austin Cardiff's Great-grandaughter. Edward was a brother of your John Cardiff as his father was William Finch Cardiff, as well. Both William Finch and Edward Austin were in the Civil war. I know that William Finch was a prisoner of war at one point at Harper's Ferry. Before the War they lived in Fulton County Pennsylvania. William Finch was Captain of Co. B 3rd Md. Vol. Inf. Edward Austin was Calvery. After the war they both ended up in Galva Illinois, which is were I grew up. William Finch and Edward Austin are burried in our local cemetary. Most of this information came from a very old article about Edward Austin when he was still living. I also have his personal diaries, including some that he carried in the war. A few years ago, I did research on those diaries (they are difficult to read now) and wrote a paper on the topic. If you get me your address, I can send you a copy, if you's like. I live in Illinois and my number is listed.

Eric,
William H. Cardiff born in Marion County.OH b6/1836. He died 12/25/1895 in DeWitt County, IL. He is buried there and I have pictures of his tomb stele. His father, old William, as I call him, is traceable through census data to 1820 in Caroline County,MD. In 1830, He is traceable to OH and then marriage and farm ownership in Marion County. That is where my gggrandfather (William H.) was born I know he served in the War of 1812 but not his rank or duty. He once told a newspaper that he served with Taylor at the Battle of New Orleans from beginning to end. I don't have his record so am not sure. Nowhere have I been able to find his middle initial, if any. I do not believe William F. Cardiff is the same person.

I am looking for William Finch Cardiff's father............

Thank you.
Lynn Cardiff

Cardiff and Ardiff probably derive from Kerdif or Kerdiff, an old Welsh-Norman name commin in Ireland in Co Wexford, Meath and Kildare, and also in Dublin. There is a frank cardiff in Australia researching the ancestry.

Not sure either. Did your Jack Cardiff change his name to Charles K. Morris, or where did that name come from?? Not sure where my Jack Cardiff was born but he was a radio operator in B17's during WWII. Would have been around age 18 or so I think. My Dad was a gunner in the B17's and was a friend of his.
