I would very interested in any information that you may have of the early Carleton family.
I am specifically trying find out whom the parents of Bridget Carleton b. 1475 Brandsby, Yorkshire, England were and any earlier ancestors of hers. If that is the same family that you have researched.

The information that I have says that Bridget Carleton married Richard Stokes b. 1475 Worcester, Worcestershire, England. They were likely married in Yardly since my info says that both died in Yardly. I only have record of one son, Humphrey Stokes b. Humphrey Stokes b. 1500 Yardley, Worcestershire, England.

Humphrey Stokes married Anne Stokes (don't know her birth date and maiden name) and my information says that they had one son Richard Stokes b. 1544 Yardley, Worcestershire, England. This Richard Stokes married Mary Smalbroke b. 1546 Yardley, Worcestershire, England.

I don't know if any of this information helps anyone else here or not. I have more information on the descendants of this family if it does match anyone else's family.

Thanks for your message. Since writing, I've been looking through the 1901 and 1911 Irish Censuses at all the Carleton families in the civil parishes of Drumkeeran and Magheraculmoney. The present Ederney Parish of Culmaine, I understand, covers these 2 historical civil parishes.

As you know, I'm looking for the family of an Anne Carleton who married James Cassidy in 1876. She was born in about 1855 and died in 1894. Her father was Anthony Carleton, Drumnavaghan who is described as the 'late Anthony Carleton at Anne's marriage in 1876.

I was interested to see that, in the 1911 Irish Census, a Brigid Carleton(32),a servant, was living in Ederney at the home of James Cassidy (Anne's husband) and his son James. I wondered if she was perhaps a niece. I looked for her in the 1901 Census and found a Bridget Carleton(24) living with her father William Carleton(65), her mother Mary Carleton(55)and her brother and sisters, James(26), Mary(22) and Margaret(14) in Crimlin (Tirmacspird). Have you come across this family in your research? From online baptism records that I've seen for Bridget and Mary their mother's name was Mary Cassidy(!).

These children's names are also mentioned in a book that I have "Memories of Moneyvriece Primary School" which has a list of the pupils who attended the school (1869-1950)at the back. There are altogether 8 Carleton children listed from Crimlin, 5 from Clonee, 2 from Drumacalara, 6 from Oghill and 1 from Drumyerna.

The names from Oghill are very similar to the names of a family in Crimlin(Tirmacspird)in the 1901 Irish Census eg Maggie, William and Isabella. They also include '1915 Carleton, John,b. 10.12.1909- Oughill (USA)' which may be of interest to you. I can give you the names of the other children and the dates if you want.

In the 1901 Irish Census, I did find 3 unmarried brothers living together in Drumnavahon(Drumnavaghan) where Anthony Carleton (Anne's father) was from; Thomas(50), John(56) and James(66). These may well be Anne's brothers and this Thomas Carleton may be the witness at her wedding.

If any of this info is of interest or you'd like the list of children that I mentioned, don't hesitate to contact me. By the way I had already seen a transcript of your family headstone at Montiagh online at www.igp.com

Kind regards,
Maura
Hi Bob
Oh wow - I could kiss your feet!!!
Mine must have been RC as Mary Janes' two granchildre became a Dominican Nun and a Catholic Priest at the Vatican.

I have no clue whatsoever about who Mary Jane Carleton's parents were. The only clues are her childrens names Magdalena and Mary Ann and then she had 6 boys.

I then strangely enough came across a website
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/reading-room/history-heritage/...

and wondered if she never went to Autralia first and then came to South Africa.
best wishes
Heather
Hi Heather

I am so sorry that I have not replied earlier. For some reason the notification from Ancestry was sent to junk mail instead of my in box???

We may well be related, I have only found three seperate Carleton families so far. My lot were not R.C. as far as I can tell but people were converting and changing quite a lot I think.

I have never found any further roots in Galway but usually there seem to be some Carletons in Wexford. Perhaps the latter was more of an ancestral home. My Father had visited various surviving uncles in his youth but never mentioned Galway, only Waterford and Wexford.

Good luck in your research and if I can assist please get in touch.

Bob

She may have been a cousin of my Carletons. Since being Catholic was a bit frowned upon at that time, the records aren't too good. All I know is that my James Carleton (who was the father of your Thomas witness I think) is buried here and links to my John Carleton (my great-grandfather)- see the attached grave photo I took in 2005. I have not been able to go beyond this James with any certainty!

Hi,
I am new to ancestry.com and I was very interested to read your post, although you wrote it some time ago.

My great grandfather, James Cassidy, of Drumierna, outside Ederney, County Fermanagh, married Anne Carlton of Drumnavaghan, near Ederney on 25th May 1876. Both these townlands are very close to the Oghill/Crimlin townlands, I believe.

On their marriage certificate James' father is listed as the 'late James Cassidy' and Anne's father is listed as the 'late Anthony Carlton'. Their witnesses were Thomas Carlton and Patrick Cassidy.

I have no information about James prior to his marriage, although he may have been in the army and, apart from the fact that his father was James and that he was deceased in 1876, I know nothing about his family. I would love to hear from anyone who may be able to shed light on this particular James Cassidy's family.

HI Dauncy1,

The online census of Ireland for 1901 and 1911 reveals that Robert Carleton lived on Boundary street and Bellevue Street in Woodvale, Belfast about 2 miles from Goodwin Carleton on Magdala Street in Cromac, Belfast.
I am not personally related to the family. I am doing the research on behalf of the grandson of Edgar Goodacre Carleton and great-grandson of David Carleton and Mary Ann Magilton. I am afraid that the name Goodwin Carleton has not come in our research.

Since I posted my original post, I have identified more children of David Carleton and Mary Ann Magilton, all born Belfast:
Annie b. abt 1900; Robert William b. 1901; Ileen; Jane b. abt 1906; Hugh; Edgar Goodacre b. 1909; Isabella.

The parentage of David Carleton and Mary Ann Magilton is still not proven though I think Magilton's family may have come from Kircubbin, Co. Down.

Dauncey

He had at least one son who was born in Ireland as well, Guy Leopold Carleton (november of 1878). His wife was Charolette Payne. Any information that anyone has as to where to search and such would be greatly appreciated.

Migration from AL to TX (fairly long)

Please forgive the cross-posting, but I realized after I had written this to the WILSON-L mailing List, I should share on the Carleton/Carlton and Bynum Lists. Maybe this will help someone out there; maybe someone out there may be able to help me.

I don't know if anyone has chimed in with a reason for leaving AL for TX, but this is what I know from my family:

I have several branches of family that moved from AL to TX. One branch, the Bynums (Green C. Bynum and his wife Sarah) moved from Blount and Coosa Counties, AL (1840-1850 censuses) to Winn Parish, LA (1860 census) to Sabine County TX (1870 census). Green may have been following family members, as there were many of his cousins who moved to other parts of TX. Why Sabine County, I don't know. It wasn't that far from where they lived in Louisiana. Later, most of Green's children ended up in Angelina County, TX.

Tied in with the Bynums are the Carletons. Thomas Carleton and his second wife Sarah Frier lived in Bibb County AL, then Talladega County, AL, where Coleman Columbus Carleton married Nancy Arminda Bynum, daughter of Green, in 1853. The families of the couple all seem to have moved to Winn Parish, LA before 1860. CC Carleton may have seen TX during the Civil War and decided that it might be a nice place to start over. There is a lead I have been following about Green Bynum and his actions during the war; he may have made himself a little unpopular. CC and Nancy moved to TX about 1867. From records that I have seen, land was cheaper and more abundant.

Finally the Wilsons. This Wilson family was from Butler County, AL. Thomas Jefferson Wilson and his wife Julia Harrison Wilson moved from Butler Co, AL to Angelina County, TX in 1879. They were following TJ's sisters, Mary, wife of John W. Dees and Siddie, wife of Charles H. Dees. Both couples had moved to Angelina after 1870. There was a large contingent of Alabama folks in that county; so much so, that the school near Pollok TX was called the Alabama School. In some respects, it didn't even seem like moving.

Thomas Jefferson Wilson was the son of Cyrus Wilson who died in Butler County AL in 1859. I don't know anything about Cyrus's predecessors for certain except that supposedly there is a family bible that gives Cyrus's father's name as John Whitten Wilson. I have not seen this bible myself.
Cyrus does not appear in the 1850 federal census at all; he is listed in the 1850 AL state census for Butler (head of household only, does not show birthplace). His wife, Ann Poole (again, surname from family bible record) is in the 1860 census with a SC birthplace. The marriage supposedly took place in South Carolina, but I have found no record of it, or where Cyrus may have been in 1840, or any trace of the family of Ann. Cyrus's birthplace is given in his children's records as GA, AL, SC or England. The oldest child, Mary Wilson Dees consistently gives birthplaces for her parents of GA
(Cyrus) and SC (Ann). I believe that her info is more reliable than that of her younger siblings. The next oldest sibling to survive past the Civil War was 6 years younger than her, and only 10 years old when his father died.
Ann died in 1861 or 1862. At this point, Mary was about 18. So it is possible that Cyrus was born in GA, and Ann in SC. Cyrus and Ann's children
are:

1. Mary 1843-1915, m. John Watson Dees
2. John Wilson b. abt 1845, killed in Civil War
3. Allen Wilson b. abt 1848, died in Mobile, AL in 1863 4. Thomas Jefferson Burnett Wilson, 1849-1921, m. Julia Ann Harrison
5. Siddie Wilson, 1850-1900, m. Charles H. Dees
6. Franklin Pierce Wilson, 1854-1938, married Sarah E. Perry
7. Jasper Cyrus Wilson, 1858-1885, m. Amanda McBee

If anyone connects with this Wilson family, please let me know. This is one of 4 separate branches of Wilsons in my family tree. Unfortunately, this is my father's maternal grandmother's line, so DNA is out for this branch from my side at least. He is in the FTDNA database for his paternal Wilson line in Ripley County IN.

As a research help, I will put this out there: Since I have soooooo many common names in my family (4 different Wilson lines, Taylor, Anderson, Carpenter, Morgan, even a few Smiths and Jones, but no Browns!) I have gotten very adept at cluster genealogy and some of the more unusual record sources. Find all known associates and track them; people usually moved in bunch. Look at deed books for neighbors and track them. Search for manuscript collections. Look at the people in the census before and after them, those will be the neighbors. You might stumble across something on a previous page or a following page.

I know it is not always in the cards, but I cannot stress enough how beneficial it is to visit the places your ancestors lived. There are usually records available in that location that cannot be found anywhere else that you will only find out about when you are there. And the public library usually has a vertical file with all sorts of odds and ends; you may find your answer there. Both of these situations have happened to me, both in my personal research and my professional work for clients.

Sarah Nesnow
Rhode Island Research
4635 Post Road, Suite 1
East Greenwich, RI 02818
401-244-5119
sarah@rhodeislandresearch.com
Carleton Family links to Cuba?

I am finding in my family history several individuals who lived in Cuba... so far, residents of the United States who in their wills state they were in Cuba "accidentally," but that sounds a little strange to me. Time period is mid-late 1860s, which would suggest Civil War deserters, but I'm finding no proof of it. Anybody know any more about this? Thanks much.

I know this isn't a Carleton you are looking for, but after I saw that yours had a middle name of Dexter, I figure he's probably related. I don't have any connection to these families, but found this in the June 4, 1901 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Courier-Gazette in the "Talk of the Town" column:

"The 98th Annual Commencement at Hebron Academy occurs Wednesday, June 19. Two Knox county boys figure in the program, James Dexter Carleton of Rockport who has an essay on 'Physical Culture,' and Robert L. Emery of Owl's Head, to whom befalls the presentation of class gifts."

I have no connection at all to this family, but found this and thought you might like it. From the book "History of Camden and Rockport", p. 421:

"William Carleton, Jr. died Jan. 9, 1876, at the age of 66 years. He was the eldest son of William Carleton and was bon in Camden Sept. 28, 1809. He received a liberal education and in early life began trading in Rockport (then Goose River) village, where with the exception of four years spent in California, he continued in business all his life doing, in addition, an ice business. He and his brother, E.E. Carleton, established the firm of Carleton & Co. which continued for some time after his death, but finally became merged in the Rockport Ice Co. Mr. Carleton was frequently elected Town Clerk of his town and might have held many prominent public positions of trust and honor but preferred to attend closely to his business. He went to California in 1849, being one of the companies sailing from Camden in the brig. Perfect, and returned in 1853. Mr. Carleton was always a strong advocate of temperance, was a consistent member of the Congregational Church, and a high minded, kind-hearted, philanthropic gentleman. Mr. Carleton married for his first wife, Phebe H. Loring, of Yarmouth, Maine, and for his second wife Sarah Loring a sister of his first wife. He had two daughters, Frances E. and Sarah L., both of whom married Rev. Thomas E. Brastow."
His father and mother were Peter and Hannah (Gage) Carleton who were married at Haverhill 12 March 1750. Peter was their third child, he was born 9 September 1755.

It is to be supposed that he lived the life of the average boy of those times. He attended public schools of Haverhill and afterwards engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.

In the course of time, he married Abigail Hazeltine on 6 January 1782. The birth of their daughter Zalinda on 12 June 1790 is recorded on the vital records in Haverhill. The others: George, born 6 July 1792; John born 9 September 1794; Louise born 24 September 1796 are recorded at Landaff. There may have been other children.

So it would seem that it was about 1790 that he removed from Haverhill, Massachusetts to Landaff, New Hampshire and made his home on the farm now occupied by Amos Albee. He was probably the most prominent man in this vicinity at that time.

In the summer of 1793 he was one of the committee who did the work of laying out a road from Concord (now Lisbon) line through the towns of Littleton and Dalton to the Lancaster town line. This road, the history says, when completed made a rough but passable thoroughfare between Haverhill and Lancaster. It was made to be traveled on horseback, or on foot, or by ox teams. Fordable streams were not bridged and swamps were sometimes corduroyed, stumps were cut close to the ground, but rocks were permissible in the best roads of the day.

He was a Justice of the Peace, and performed a great many marriage ceremonies. A good many of them are found recorded on our old (Lisbon) town records. He was the magistrate before whom a great many people appeared to be sworn when making conveyances of land, and his wife, Abigail, witnessed many of the signatures of conveyances.

In 1795 he was on a committee with Ebenezer Brewster of Hanover, and Capt. John Mann of Orford, the founder of that town, to select the site for the old covered bridge between Haverhill and Newbury, known as the "Haverhill Bridge." This is the bridge a little way below the Keyes farm.

The death of his wife Abigail has not been found on record, but on the town records of Bath his second marriage is recorded. On 8 March 1801, he married Miss Azubah Stone, a woman twenty years younger than himself.

In 1803 the Coos Bank of Haverhill was chartered. Peter Carleton was one of the incorporators and directors of the bank. With him in this bank were associated John Montgomery, the president of the bank who lived at the Brook (in Haverhill) and built the beautiful Colonial house where Mr. Koch has an antique shop now. George Woodward was the cashier of the bank. He was the son of Bezeleel Woodward of Hanover and his wife, Mary, the daughter of Eleazer Wheelock, the founder and first president of Dartmouth College. Like his father, he had been treasurer of the College. He built the fine mansion at the south end of the common in Haverhill, surrounded now by a beautiful antique fence. In this house the bank did its business. Another one of the directors was Moses Payson of Bath, who built the house we now know as the Colonial Inn.

In 1820 the bank found itself in financial difficulties and failed. The directors were retired and the Grafton bank was chartered. Moses Payson was the only one of the directors of the Coos Bank called to the directorate of this new bank.

In politics he was a Democrat. He was elected to the State House of Representatives in 1803, and served his term. At this time John Taylor Gilman of Exeter was the Governor of the state. He was elected State Senator in 1806, which office he held during the term of John Langdon as Governor. He was elected to the Tenth United States Congress and served from March 1807 to March 1809. At this time Thomas Jefferson was the President of the United States. John Marshall was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He may have witnessed the trial of Aaron Burr for conspiracy against the Government. About this time Robert Fulton launched his steamboat on the Hudson River, and the events which catapulted the War of 1812 were in the embroiling.

On 9 April 1818, being 63 years of age, he applied for a pension. This would seem that he had been unfortunate financially. In his application he said that he had enlisted in January 1777 in Massachusetts, and served under Capt. John Blanchard and Col. James Wesson until 31 December 1779, on which date he was discharged at West Point, New York. That he was in the battles of Bemis Heights and Stillwater. He held the commission of Sergeant Major. He signed this application with a cross, which would make it seem that he had become blind. His claim for a pension was allowed.

In 1820 he mentions his children by his second wife: Hannah fourteen years of age, James seven years of age, and Mary five years of age, and says: "I have children by a former wife, they are all of age."

In 1855 his wife Azubah, was living in Norfalk, St. Lawrence County, New York.

He died in Bath. The papers in the settlement of his estate are on file in the Probate Office at Woodville.

The inscription on his unimposing gravestone in the cemetery at Landaff, reads: "Peter Carleton, Esq., died April 29, 1828 in the 73rd year of his age."

Mary Carleton Brümmer
Lisbon, New Hampshire
Jan. 22, 1934.lxix

5. He held a Commission as Cornet of the First Company, belonging to the Regiment of which Richard Salterstall was Colonel. Said commission bears the date of "the sixth year of the reign of George I" (1717). He is distinguished from the other Edward's by the title "Cornet."

Most of Edward Carlton's papers were preserved, and at one time in the possession of Israel Carleton who lived on the "Carleton Place" where the Cornet lived and died. This property has been in the uninterrupted possession and ownership of the Carlton family for nearly 200 years. His monument, as well as that of his wife, is still standing in the old churchyard in West Parish, Haverhill, Massachusetts, near the old homestead. There are very few of these old memorials to the dead left standing, although this ancient burial place is completely filled and has ceased to be used.

Edward Carlton, Jr. was on the committee to build the first Meeting House in the Precinct of Haverhill. It appears from the Articles of Agreement, which are in his own hand-writing and are dated 8 November, 1734, that the "house was to be built Andover West End Meeting House," the pulpit to be better done than that of North Precinct Meeting House; the deacon's seat and the communion table to be as the committee will order them to be done.

Commission of his Cornetsy is from John Fletcher, Captain General and Governor-in-relief, in and over his Majesty's Province of Massachusetts Bay in New England, and is under his hand and Seal. He held a commission as Cornet of the first company of Horse, the regiment being commanded by Colonel Richard Salterstall. cxxivHis last will is dated 8 Nov. 1749. His son, Peter, is appointed executor. It appears from the inventory of his estate, that it was valued £1256, 16scxxv. A very rich and valuable cane, made out of a rare foreign wood, still excellent condition with a stout copper bottom and surmounted by a silver headpiece, the initials "E. The barrel of a long English dueling-piece, which the Cornet left, is still in effective use (1880)cxxvi and was the gift of the Ebenezer Carleton of Bath, to his grandson, Langdon G. Carleton, and is now in the possession of John L. Carleton of Bath, New Hampshire.

The above mentioned relics are carefully inventoried by the County Executor. The gun valued at £3, the cane at 10 shillings. His three wigs are also valued according to their several grades and uses. The faithful Executor does not overlook his three bolts of blue Camblet and of Buckskin, striped jackets, tight long stockings, silver shoe buckles, and two neck and sleeve buttons to match.cxxvii

Property purchased by Worrall D.
Carleton/Demont NH

Hello,

I am trying to verify that Sophronia Carleton b 1826 in NH is my maternal great great grandmother. My gggfather George Demont (Nova Scotia) married a woman named Sophronia. Their son Clinton Whitman Demont (B 1862 IN UPSTATE NY) was my maternal ggfather.

George disappears around 1865, a few years after Clinton was born. Clinton married my ggmother Dolly Hayward in 1882 in Fitchburg, MA. At that time Clinton was living in New Ipswich NH.

I'm shooting in the dark on Sophronia, it was a very popular name in the early 1800's. Any help would be appreciated. THANKS!!

Carleton - Antrim, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland

I am researching the family of David Carleton b. abt 1874 in Antrim, Co. Antrim. He married Mary Ann Magilton (probably in Belfast) and died in Belfast abt 1925.

According to his son Edgar Goodacre Carleton (who emigrated to Canada), David Carleton had the following siblings:
- Hugh Carleton (never married);
- Charles Carleton who had a large family;
- Isabella/Bella who had a son.
There may be other siblings.

Does anyone recognize this family?

I am hoping to trace my Carleton's who lived north of Enniskillen from the early 1800's to some RC Carletons that lived in Enniskillen in the late 1700's. Does anyone have records that might assist? My James Carleton died in 1897 and was buried at Montaighroe Rc Graveyard, Drumskinny, Drumkeeran, Co. Fermanagh.

I believe our Carletons are related. I have a photo from the gravesite of two James Carleton's and my GGGrandfather John, who died in Crimlin Fermanagh in 1908. The linkage past John to know which James was his father is dicey, as the catholic parish records were illegible. I'd imagine this generation was at least cousins of yours though!

I would appreciate it if you would let me know if you are a descendant of Sir Guy Carleton and if you know of his brother, Capt. William Carleton who died at sea? We believe that we are descended thru Capt. William's son, Col. Christopher Carleton who died in Quebec June 1, 1787 and is buried there in the New Burying Ground. He was married to Lady Anne Howard. We believe that my 3rd gr grandmother, Margaret Pierce Carleton was descended thru this line.

I hope to hear from you.
Florence Norback

The names in your message board sound as if they are descendants of Sir Guy Carleton. I am searching for descendants of Sir Guy's brother, William -- one being William's son, Col. Christopher Carleton who married Lady Anne Howard. Do you know of any children for Col. Christopher? We believe that one of his sons (either Guy John or John Guy)married Margaret Pierce. Their daughter, Margaret Pierce Carleton, married Henry Hoblirzell on May 7, 1812 in Cumberland, Allegany Co., MD. I will greatly appreciate hearing from you.
