Info on Frank Carley who lived in Eagle River, Wisconsin in 1905

I currently own the property that Frank Carley established Homestead on in 1905. We have a resort that has been n our family since the fall of 1920. I'm looking for any pictures or information on this property from the Carley era. I have a couple of pictures (including one of Mrs. Carley) and the main lodge, but little else. Can a Carley get back to me on this?

Sincerely,

Ken Jackson
jacksonlakeside@msn.com

To all following the William who married Rachael Neal - that William was the son of the William Cearley/Carley who married Martha Patty Carter - and he was the son of the William outlined on the last entry of this string - William the Marine who married Mary Bowden -- William the Mariner was the son of Capt. Henry Kerley and his second wife, Elizabeth Ward, widow of John Howe, II and they were in Marlborough, MA, both having lost spouses in the Massacres in MA in 1675. Henry and his father and son William and nephew William were founders of Sudbury, MA in @ 1642, founders of Lancaster and Marlborough in the 1650s.
William who married Martha Patty was given land in VA by the Crown along with another of his brothers for the services rendered to the Crown by the family after William the Mariner's death in 1739. William the Mariner served on the first war ship built in the Colonies for the purpose of defending the Colonies and he later did much service for the Crown in other matters on the sea. Henry was a member of land defense services and testified in the investigation of the Andros Affair.
Re: Daughter of John P. Carly

Your immediate family may be small but the Carly family is large. I remember attending Carly reunions each year as I was growing up and there were usually over 100 people attending.

I got a lot of information for the family tree from my mom, Estella Delbarre Kaukonen, who passed away this past July. Also Beverly Carly Liston (Telly Carly's daughter) has done a lot of work on our family tree.

John Baptiste Carly immigrated in May of 1888 with his parents (John Baptiste Joseph Carly (1847-1877) and Marie Louise "Josephine" Moreau (1853-1929) born in Loupoigne, Brabant Wallon, Belgium and Lombise, Hainaut, Belgium, respectively. A brother and two sisters also immigrated with the family. Their sister, my grandmother was the youngest and only one of that family who was born in the USA. I remember well the sisters, Camille and Damasine. Our families visited each other several times a year when I was growing up.

I know your aunt Vi Carly Anderson quite well. She lives in Charleroi, PA.

I don't have much information about your immediate family. Are you married and do you have children or grandchildren? If so,would you give me their vital information re. births, deaths, marriage dates, and where?

My mom gave me information about your brother Christopher who I believe died in 1998. Do you have information about his wife and their kids that you would be willing to share?

If you want to write me directly, my email is fernjo@yahoo.com

Good to be in touch.

Carley in Massachusetts/Rhode Island

My Carley's were the children of Bernard Carley (Carly) and Bridget Hed (Head/Hede). There were 6 children (2 females/4 males)of which 1 female died at 2 and the male at 1. The surviving children were Michael, Mary (Marion), James, Patrick who all migrated to U.S.. My great grandfather was Patrick. He was baptized on 27 Mar 1844 in Strokestown, County Roscommon. He died on 30 Aug 1914 in Providence Rhode Island. He lived in North Attleborough, Massachusetts for most of his life. The above information is based on a number of sources, including vital records/insurance applications/obituaries in Mass,R.I.,LDS, and Irish records.

Peter Mikulis

Two Joseph Carley Death Date Mixup's

Does anyone know where the actual source for the date for Joseph Carley, who died supposedly on 10 Mar 1810 comes from? This date has been mixed up online with the death date for Joseph Carley, Sr. who actually died in (and is buried in) Whitingham, VT on 7 Mar 1808. Senior and wife's d/d's are verified. The former date was posted by someone to have taken place at Hoosick, NY,(now in Rensselaer Co., NY)former homeplace of this Carley family. I believe that the man who died on 10 Mar 1810 is Joseph, Jr. son of Joseph and Sarah Washburn Carley and that he is one and same who is on the Bridgewater, NY 1800 census with Quartus Carley (Sr.). This Joseph, Jr? is not on the 1810 census, so a death date of 1810 could be right. I need to know the source for this date, if anyone knows of whoever posted it and where they got it. It sounds like such a solid date that it must be a bible or tombstone record, to be so precise.

Jeff,
What about Janice? Did she marry & have any children?
Do you have any birth & death dates on Janice & Anita?
The Lawrence I'm speaking of, is not in the 1600's but in 1700's. I'm speaking of Levir's father Lawrence. I think the reason we couldn't find any record of his parent's is because the church records in Nova Scotia where he lived, didn't survive. That is what I remember, but will recheck when I get out those records & try to get back with you tomorrow.
I used my local library's computer every morning for my email & genealogy research. I have a computer at home with my Family Tree Maker program on it, but I'm not on internet, as I can't afford it, so get it free at my local library.
Don

Meredith Van Carley had 2 daughters and a son. Janice, Anita "Tee Dee" and Lynn Carley. Lynn is the only one still living out of Meredith's children. Anita had no children of her own, but adopted 2 children that reside in Lafayette (Micky and Julie)

Tee Dee married James "Jim" Riehle and was the Mayor of Lafayette, more info at their family page www.riehle.net

The reason you cant find any more history on the Lawrence Van Buskirk name is because Lawrence changed his name from Anderson to Van Buskirk in the 1600's. I have also seen this name change from Laurens Anders to the Americanized version Lawrence Anderson, meaning son of Anders

Here is the story of the name change:

This is a paragraph from a book called "Decendants of Levir Van Buskirk and Susan Towle of Woodstock, New Brunswick, Canada and Orono, Maine" written by Margaret (Van Buskirk) Loeffelbein in 1985, that was passed down through my family to me.

"Frances Van Buskirk, daughter of Charles Van Buskirk of Bear River, Digby Country, Nova Scotia, years ago visited Holland and got the history and coat-of-arms. The original name was Lawrence Anderson and he was knighted and given the name of John Van Buskirk for his valor in fighting for the church, (John, the King's own given name, Van, the title, being the same as 'de'' in French). He was a farmer or bushman, as they are called and so 'bus' was the first part of the name and 'kirk' for the church was the last part of the name. She bought some hand painted ones as the coat-of-arms were so nice, having so much on them, The motto is AMOR PATRIE EXCITAT, the Latin meaning, "The love of Country excites me"
Jeff,
Didn't know I was going to get an answer from you today when I got to the library or I would have had my VanBuskirk stuff with me. I'll bring it with me tomorrow. I do remember that Lawrence Van Buskirk married his cousin Mary Van Buskirk & in the Shoemaker Van Buskirk history, it gives her lineage, but not for Lawrence.
My friend George Van Buskirk (your close cousin) has the other VanBuskirk history by Loeffelbein & we were disappointed that Lawrence's line wasn't continued beyong him, but with lots of my 52 yrs. of genealogy research experience, I'm pretty sure he & Mary were 1st or 2nd cousins, but I'll have to look at my notes, as its been several months, since I've looked at those.
George wants to know if your grandfather Meredith had any daughters, as he thinks one of his daughters married a mayor of Lafayette, In. Is he right about that?
Will get back with you tomorrow.
Thanks for your help.
Don Matson

This is how your family is connected to me

Jeffrey Todd Carley 1968-
Lynn Meredith Carley 1946-
Meredith Van Carley 1907-1975 married Alethea Leyson

Here is the connection, Sadie is my great grandmother

Sadie Anita Van Buskirk married Simeon "Earl" Carley 1880-1959
George W Van Buskirk 1843-1926 married Sarah Jackson
Levir Van Buskirk 1820-1853 married Susan Towle
Lawrence Van Buskirk married Mary
Jacobus Van Buskirk 1749-1857 married Gertrude Schram
Andres T Van Buskirk 1707-1770 married Annejte Vervey
Thomas Van Buskirk 1668-1748 married Margrietje Brickers
Laurens A Van Buskirk 1630-1694

Van Buskirk History

This is a paragraph from a book called "Decendants of Levir Van Buskirk and Susan Towle of Woodstock, New Brunswick, Canada and Orono, Maine" written by Margaret (Van Buskirk) Loeffelbein in 1985, that was passed down through my family to me.

"Frances Van Buskirk, daughter of Charles Van Buskirk of Bear River, Digby Country, Nova Scotia, years ago visited Holland and got the history and coat-of-arms. She bought some hand painted ones as the coat-of-arms were so nice, having so much on them, The motto is AMOR PATRIE EXCITAT, the Latin meaning, "The love of Country excites me"

Frances' great grandfather, John Van Buskirk's brother, Henry Van Buskirk of Frogmore, Aylesford, Kings County, Nova Scotia has a similar coat-of-arms in colour, which is now at the Fort Anne Museum at Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. The area superintendent of historic sites of southwestern Nova Scotia states "Henry's helmet is slightly slanted to the left and the front is not the same as Mutch's helmet. The museum one has red and gold tassels, with a red background behind the castle, trees and bird. The trees (green); helmet and castle (grey); bird (gold), while Mutch's bird is white; wings (variant); chevron (gold) and mounds (green)."

NOTE:
This may be the reason I cant find any more history on the Van Buskirk name, since Lawrence changed his name from Anderson to Van Buskirk in the 1600's. I have also seen this name change from Laurens Andres to the Americanized version Lawrence Anderson, meaning son of Andres

Here are a few bios that I have on the Van Buskirks in my lineage

•	George Wesley Van Buskirk (Levir1) was born at Woodstock, New Brunswick on 30 August 1843; son of Levir and Susan (Towle) Van Buskirk; died at Liberty Corners, Portage County, wisconsin on 18 July 1926, at the age of 82 years. He is buried in Liverty Corners Cemetery, Portage County, Wisconsin.

He married SARAH ELIZABETH JACKSON at Hampden, Maine on 3 August 1870. She was born at Hampden, Maine on 28 April 1844, the daughter of Isaac and Olive Jackson. She died 19 October 1901 at Liberty Corners Cemetery.

He was a lumberman in Maine and in Wisconsin in partnership with his brother, Charles. They were known as Van Buskirk Brothers, who lumbered in Dancy, Ogema, Stevens Point and Van Buskirk, Ashland County (now Iron County) Wisconsin, where they had a mill from 1889-1893. In 1893 he and his brother purchased timberland in Amador and Calaveras Counties of Califorina consisting of sugar and yellow pine, fir, spruce and cedar. In late 1902 he sold his Califorina timberintrest to his brother, Charles , and remained in Wisconsin. They lived at 229 Pine Street, Stevens Point, Van Buskirk & Liverty Corners, Portage County, Wisconsin.

•	Levir Van Buskirk was born in the year preceeding 14 September 1829 in Nova Scotis, positive proof of parentage not available; died 22 August 1853 in Orono, Maine.

Levir and SUSAN TOWLE were married by George Johnson, Wesleyan minister in the presence of E.J. or (G) Harris and George F. Williams on 22 december 1841 in Woodstock, Carleton County, New Brunswick, Canada. They signed their names as Levir Van Buskirk and Susan Towl_. She was born in 1821 in Raymond, New Hampshire, the daughter of Elisha and Susanna (Brown) Towle. She died 1 July 1853 in Orono, Maine, and is buried in Riverside Cemetery. As many in that area died of cholera at this time, it is presumed that caused her death as well as that of Levir's.

•	Laurens Andriessen came from Holstein, Denmark in 1655. His name first appears in records of New Amsterdam, June 19, 1656 in a deed for a lot of land on Broad Street. He was then unmarried and a turner by trade, afterwards, however, becoming a draper. He took the oath of allegiance November 20, 1665 and married September 12, 1658 Jannetje Jans (widow of Christian Barentsen Van Horn).
In July 1658 Laurens was sent by the Orphans Master at New Amsterdam to South River (Delaware) to assist the widow of Christian Barentsen Van Horn, a carpenter, who died as the result of a malady that took many lives in that area. Four and a half months later Laurens and Jannetje married on December 12, 1658 according to the marriage registry of the Dutch Reformed Church in New Amsterdam. Some say the same date but list Old Dutch Church, Staten Island, NY.

Arrived in New Netherland before 1654, via Holland. Bought a lot on Broad St. 29 Jun 1656. Was a dry goods merchant. Moved to Hackensack by 1688. 1662, bought land on the shore of the Hudson. Became a judge and Justice of the Peace. Helped set up a Lutheran Church when the English established religious freedom. He was called van Buskirk because he lived next to a church by the
woods. He was sometimes called Laurens de Dreyer (turner) because he was also apparently a turner by trade.

(Source: Immigration Library, Scandinavian Immigrants of New York.)
Title: Shoemaker, Irene English; Van Buskirk, A Legacy from New Amsterdam.
Text: Date of Import: Apr 1, 1999

I also have them in my files - Robert Bartholomew is listed as son of Bartholomew and Anne Thomson Carley originally from Nobletown, Columbia, NY - this Bartholomew was a son of Joseph Carley and ? Jellette - Joseph's line unclear but thought to be a son of William, the Mariner, and Mary Bowden Carley - this couple married in Boston by Cotton Mather in 1703 - William, son of Capt. Henry Kerley and second wife, Elizabeth Ward, widow of John Howe, II. Henry's first wife Elizabeth White Kerley and sons William and possibly Joseph were killed in the Massacre at Lancaster in 1676. Henry son of William the Immigrant Kerly and wife Ann White Kerly - who were in MA by 1637.

Do you know the name of his wife? Was it Rachel Neal/e? This particular William Carley/Cearley died in Wilkes Co., NC. Just wondering if your Colley line is connected to these Cearley's, as we know the originator of the NC branch is earlier in MA. Not so sure Colley and those of this line are one and same. This William would have been the proper age to be in the Revolution.
