We heard he may have moved to Chicago in the late 1890's, or possibly had passed away. Any info would be appreciated.

James M. Carlisle - D.C. Area, Scottish Lawyer

Hi,

I am looking for any decendants of a James M. Carlisle who lived in the D.C. area throughout the 1800's. He was a Scottish lawyer born around 1820. I know he also had a son by the same name.

I am a decendant of the elder James M. Carlisle through an interracial, illegitimate affair and my great-grandfather, John Abraham Davis, was the result. He took the last name Davis from his mother and decided he wanted nothing to do with his father. Therefore, other than the fact that he was a prominent Scottish lawyer in D.C. in the 1800's and his name, I really have no information on James M. Carlisle and this side of the family. Anything anyone could provide would be wonderful :).

Thank you.

Cassie

He started life in Columbus as a carpenter and ended up being a sucessful lumber merchant.

He married Anna Higgins and had four children, Mary Carlisle (b: 1844), William Carlisle (b: 14 Feb 1849), Sarah Carlisle (b: 18 Dec 1850) and Alice Carlisle (b: 26 Jan 1857). (I am not sure but Mary and William may have been from a previous marriage).

I believe Alice married a Wallis G Bowland and Sarah married a Mr Corner. I have no idea of the dates of these events and I do not know Mr Corner's first name.

Does anyone have any information on this family? My husband is particularly interested in the reason why Abraham settled in Columbus. Did he have relatives who had already emigrated there?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi everyone. I am looking for any decendents of James Reynold Carlisle, the noted violin maker who worked in Cincinnati Ohio in the early 1900's. He made some of the best American violins of that era, and I own one made in 1940. I have been looking for family members hoping that some of James's violin records are still in existance. My violin was supposedly made for the concertmaster of the Cincinnati Symphony. Does this sound familiar to ANY Carlisle researcher out there??

Janet

I have a family history book written by Cecil Allen Carlisle. It startes with Richard Carlisle of the Marlborough District, S.C., and continues through thier move to Alabama, and goes up to 1961.
It has about 2000 names in the index.
It follows Richard (1774) through his son Joel b1812 through his son William Thomas b1833 through Edward Calloway Carlisle 1859 through his daughter Beatrice Carlisle 1905. Of course it has all of the children, husbands, wives, etc. I think the Carlisles have moved all over the US now.
If I could be of help to anyone, let me know. Billie Johnson

CARLISLES in Indiana

Our Carlisles came into Scott County, IN from Carroll County, KY. Samuel Carlisle came to Carrollton, KY area and some of the descendants moved on to IN. Originally, they came from Virginia and Scotland.

Another group of Carlisles in Scott County, IN are from Ireland. So far, I don't find the two groups related.

I would like to correspond with anyone thinking their lines were from these areas noted.

John CARLISLE b. 1823 Guernsey Co, Ohio - d. 1896 Taylor Co., Iowa

I am searching for CARLISLE ancestors from Guernsey Co., Ohio.

My gg grandfather was John CARLISLE, born 23 Oct 1823 in Guernsey Co., Ohio and died 24 June 1896 in Taylor Co., Iowa. He and his wife and at least one daughter are buried in Guss Cemetery in Taylor Co., Iowa.

On 21 Oct 1846 John CARLISLE married Miss Eliza CHADWICK (presumably in Guernsey Co.) who was born in England 29 Mar 1826. Eliza states on Census records that she immigrated in 1835 but we have not found a record of it yet. We know nothing about Eliza's family.

John was a blacksmith and was also in the mercantile business according the Bio in the 1878 History of Livingston Co., Illinois. According to the bio., he moved from Guernsey Co,. Ohio to Livingston Co., Ill. in 1855.

John and Eliza had 7 children:
Alfred CARLISLE, b. 24 Oct 1847 (perhaps was a 100 day sign-up in Civil War in 1864, not found on census after 1860)
Lucy E. CARLISLE, b. 11 Nov 1849 (married Calvin Walker)
Mary CARLISLE, b. 14 Nov 1851 (married Charles Eastman)
Emma CARLISLE, b. 14 Jan 1854 (married W. A. Dennis)
Julia L. CARLISLE, b. 5 Sep 1857 (no info on what happened to her)
Susie E. CARLISLE, b. 6 May 1863, d. 12 Mar 1890 (buried w/ parents)
John William CARLISLE, b. 26 Oct 1868 d. 1 Jan 1909 (John William is my great grandfather)

The family moved from Nevada, Livingston Co., Ill. to Nodaway, Taylor County, Iowa between 1880 and 1885.

John CARLISLE (the senior) gives his parent's birth places as Pennsylvania on Census records but we have no idea at this point who his parents were. There is a William and Sarah CARLISLE in Guernsey Co. and they had a son in the right age group to be John on the 1840 census. According to later census records William and Sarah are from Penn. (except on one census it lists Md as place of birth for Sarah).

If anyone recognizes these names I'd love to hear from you.
I would be happy to share any info.

Katie

My nephew recently did a DNA test and matched 25 markers with Harvey Carlisle and Bryan K. Carlisle.

My ancestors were from South Carolina:
William Carlile, b. about 1775, SC, died 1827 in Conway Co., Arkansas, married to Elizabeth.

I was very surprised that my nephew matched the NC Carlisles. The test showed that there is a common ancestor somewhere back in time.

I would appreciate any information on the family lines from NC.

Jane Carlile Hobbs

Jonathan Carlisle was listed on the 1830 and 1840 census in Livingston County, NY. On the 1840 census his age was 70 to 80 years so I assume he died in Livingston county. I need to know the names of his wife and children. I believe Ebenezer may have been a son and also Joseph. I am particularly interested to know if he had a son named Frederick who married Minerva King in the late 1820's.

Looking for information on Frederick Carlisle and wife Minerva King. They were probably married in Genesee County, New York about 1825. They were on the 1830 census in Genesee County. In 1840 they were in Marion County, Ohio.I have not been able to locate Frederick and Minerva anywhere on the 1850 census. Minerva was back in New York in 1860 and 1870. (Livingston County and Genesee County respectively.) Does anyone know how and if my Frederick is related to the other Carlisles in and around Genesee County in the early 1800's? Any information on Frederick Carlisle and /or Minerva King would be greatly appreciated.

William Carlisle of North Carolina and Jackson County, Tennessee

I am looking for the parents of my g,g,g,g,grandfather William Carlisle who was born in North Carolina and lived most of his adult life in Jackson County, Tennessee. Here is the information I have.

In William Carlisle's pension application for service in the Revolution, he says he was born in Guilford County NC November 18, 1764. He says that he entered the militia from Surry County NC in 1780 subsituting for Moses Hazel, his stepfather. (Yes, he would have been only 15 years old and though he collected the pension for a while, it was later denied his widow on these grounds.) There is a Moses Hazlett who married a Rachel Campbell in Guilford, NC on Feb 29, 1772. Moses Hazlett is listed in Surry County in 1782 tax list and in Surry county in 1790 and 1800 under the spelling Hazle. (In William Carlisle's pension record the name is spelled Hazel.) Is it possible that Rachel Campbell was Rachel Carlisle Campbell, mother of William by an earlier marriage? The dates seem to work and there were extensive Campbell/Carlile/Carlisle connections in Augusta and Bath Counties in Virginia, but I haven't been able to make the link.

William Carlisle married Nancy Kirkpatrick on April 19, 1792 in Madison County, Kentucky and lived in Green County, Kentucky and Jackson County, Tennessee.

Can anyone help out?

David & Rhoda Jane (Bailey) Carlisle of Kalkaska, MI

I am searching for any information on David Carlisle or his wife, R. Jane (Bailey) Carlisle, who lived in Hartwick, Osceola County, Michigan at the time of the 1880 Michigan Census.

David Carlisle may have been married previous to his marriage to R. Jane. He was born circa 1843 in Erie County, New York. I don't know when he died or where he was buried.

R. Jane (Bailey) Carlisle, daughter of Henry and Anna (Welden) Bailey, was born 28 Feb 1842 in Rome, Lenawee Co., MI. She married (1st) Alanson Todd, 2 times a widower, in 1867 in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan and settled in Dorr, Allegan County, Michigan. They had daughters, Nellie Todd, born in 1868 and Rose Todd, born in 1870. There was a stillborn child born in 1872. R. Jane also had custody of a stepdaughter (a daughter of Alanson Todd's 2nd marriage), Lucretia Ellen Todd, born in 1858 in Gratiot County, Michigan. R. Jane Carlisle died in 1886 at the residence of her brother (unnamed, but he would have been a Bailey) at Kalkaska, Kalkaska County, Michigan.

Also, I have a whole different question about the same family. Also listed in the 1880 Michigan Census, living in Sylvan Township, Osceola County, was a Charles Carlile, his wife Lydia, and their son Albert. Charles Carlile and the David Carlisle mentioned above were about the same age and they both came from New York. Were they brothers?

Any help on this family would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,
Terri Mulliken Allen

An 1891 letter written by James McCoy Carlisle, Sr., b. 1811, to his son, James McCoy Carlisle, Jr., b. 1851, discusses James Sr.'s family history and has recently come to light. We already had the names of James McCoy Carlisle, Sr.'s mom and dad, Jane (McCoy), b. 1779 in NC, and William W. Carlisle, b. 1784 in PA, and we knew his grandfather Carlisle was named "James." We now have his McCoy grandparents: Robert and Margaret McCoy. We know the McCoys came from NC, that Robert was probably of Irish descent and that Margaret was a "full-blooded Scotsman." We believe Margaret was widowed by 1798 and that these McCoys and related McDonalds and Angus/Anguish McIntosh were all in Garrard Co., KY by then, and that the Anguish McIntosh who married the widowed Mrs. Margaret McCoy there in 1798 is very likely "ours." We think the McCoys and Carlisles met in KY, though they may have met in NC. We are certain these families were very closely related and that these related Carlisles, McCoys, McDonalds, and McIntoshes then migrated to middle TN between 1798 and 1809, settling in Bedford and Coffee Co., in the Beech Grove area.

Hope to hear from anyone interested in these families and migrations.

My ancestor was Warren Carlisle. He settled in Tipton County, Indiana in about 1860. After his first wife died in 1890 he remarried. On his marriage application he stated that his father was Frederick Carlisle and his mother was Marrena King and that he was born in New York.
There was a Frederick Carlisle on the 1840 census in Marion County, Ohio aged 30 to 40 with 2 males under 5, one fem. under 5, one fem. under 10, one fem. under 15 and one female 20 to 30. I believe this to be my family. They are not on the 1850 census anywhere but I believe the children were still in the area of Marion Co., Ohio because Warren's sister, Pamilia Carlisle married Alexander Burk in Marion County April 9, 1854. Also in Marion Co. a Robert Carlisle married Jane Rizer Aug. 13, 1864. Robert would have been the right age to have been a brother to my Warren.
Does anyone have any information on this family?
Am I on the right track???
