Alfonso. I am related to the Carlo family that settled in the Canary Islands from San Remo! My Dad's great-grandfather was Giovanni Carlo Battista (I think that is his second last name, but would need to check with my Dad) from San Remo. My grandfather (my Dad's Dad) was Diego Wood Carlo. Do you know your father's mother's name?

I just talked to my Dad and he asked if your second last name is Almasque? Was your mother called Mercedes? Also, the original Carlo to the islands was Giovanni-Battista Carlo. Your father and my grandfather were cousins. Feel free to email me at catherineantonia@gmail.com

My father's family are from Mayaguez and Cabo Rojo as well. The Carlo last name comes from my late grandmother Isabel. My dad has always said that the name Carlo used to be DiCarlo or DeCarlo. I have many Italian friends, they tell me that is a name from the south of Italy, mainly Sicilian. They even say that I look Sicilian.

Carlo / Reggio di Calabria / Staten Island, NY

Hi,

I am looking for information on my family, surname Carlo, originally from the Reggio di Calabria area (in particular, the town of Rosali on the Strait of Messina).

My great-great-grandfather was Gaetano Carlo (circa 1860 - 1908), who died in the Reggio di Calabria earthquake of 1908.

I do not know anything about Gaetano other than his name, and it is likely that records were destroyed in the quake.

He may have had any number of children who also died, though I know of only three that survived past the earthquake. All three settled in Staten Island, New York:

Domenico (Dominick) Carlo, 1884-1963 (m. Cecilia Carlo, 1924, came to US 1905 and built a house on Garretson Ave. in Dongan Hills).

Francesco Carlo, 1888-1912 (came to US 1906, and died six years later).

Rocco Carlo, 1890-1976 (m. Angelina Polito, 1915, m. Emilia Ippolito, 1921, came to US 1909).

All three remained on Staten Island for the rest of their lives; all three are interred at Moravian Cemetery.

I am a descendant of Rocco through his son Frank (1918-).

I believe Gaetano had a brother named Rocco (~1867-?), who came to the US with his nephew Francesco, and also settled on Staten Island, though I do not know what became of him.

Gaetano may also have had a brother Francesco (~1870-?), who had a son Domenico (Dick, ~1891-?), who came to the US together in 1907 and likely settled in the Tacoma, WA area.

Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

My great granmother Frances Lanci married a Carlo (james "jimmy" Dominic). James was born in 1897 in NYC but his mother Mary came from italy. I was told that Mary's husband died and she remarried a Longo. But through word by generations of family was told that Carlo was shortened from Cardnalla. Not sure. but maybe we have some links. I am just starting this stuff and know alot more about Lanci side than Carlo but would be glad to verify some things.
Thanks
Lanci
Thanks for the info. No, your grandfather would not be the same one as my lost uncle (my Charles would be over 145 years old now), but I'd be interested in knowing more about Lotte. If you could find out more about your family, I'd love to hear it. Even if we aren't related, I always like hearing about others' families!

Yeah? looks like we're related, lol. my grandfather was Tomas Carlo. we both have streets named after our ancestors in Dulce Labios. there's a lot of legend behind those two in that area. it looks like they had a bit of a rivalry going on (they were cusins). your ancestor made it big in la fundacion and mine made it big in crime. both very wealthy and successful in their own way and, from the sounds of things, both had a love hate relationship with the other. i've heard a lot of stories in PR. we have PLENTY of relatives in Dulce Labios. especially me. gramps was'nt big on small families. i've found 2 aunts that are illigitimate daughters of Tomas and from what i hear, there are MANY more. so far, i've counted and talked with 7, my father the eldest (also illigitimate). there's a priest named edgar carlo who pretty much mapped out all of our family lines. u should definately see him next time u are in PR. i even found out that my line is related to Roberto Cofressi (famouse PRican Pirate) i think u come from this line as well. he's got a bunch of info. if u have any more info or if u want to trade further please email me. good to meet u familia.

He has a sister named Rosie and another one named Judy. My father met my mom when they both lived in New York City and so that's where I was born. We moved to Miami, Florida when I was about 4 years old. I figure that you and I are roughly the same age if your grandfather is my father's brother. Abel was born in 1935.

My grandfather used to tell me his father had two other brothers--all came from Italy and I think Corsica?, but went on different ventures. I think one of the siblings might have been by the name of Carmen ---The name used to be DeCarlo or DiCarlo---I'm not sure at what point it changed.... I know one went to Argentina/Buenos Aires, my greatgrandfather to Puerto Rico (he was an engineer and founded the "Fundacion Simon Carlo"-), and the other I believe to Continental US. I remember my grandfather visiting Argentina at some point in the 70's visiting relatives...My grandfather also had several siblings.. Jose Abel Carlo, Orlando Carlo,_Rafael Carlo and Anita Carlo(still alive). All are deceased except for sister. Their children are for the most part in Puerto Rico and Continental US.

I have done much research into the Carlo Surname.
The Carlo family has a "Noble" origin back to the mddle ages or before. Carlo comes from "King Karl" of Italy, the name Karl was was given to men of noble stature only by kings and lords, and form the latin Karl (Carlo) meaning free man. The Carlo Coat of arms is a azure & silver, displaying a lion rampant. representing peace and serenity, loyalty & truth. The lion rampant is for "Deathless Courage, and the Carlo Motto - Corage Sans Peur (Courage without Fear). If you are looking for more details, email me jimcarlo@msn.com
I have read a few things here, but one thing you father told you is incorrect, depending how you look at it. Not all "Carlo's" are related, in fact, they come from several bloodlines. The surname Carlo, Latin Karl, is from King Karl of Italy, in 452, western rome was invaded by Atilla, forcing residence to flee to Rialto, and founded the City of Venice. The surname Carlo traces it's roots back to Venice. Kings and Lords of the time selected men of great "Noble" stature and called them Karl, meaning "free man" in a time of many wars and invasions to ensure they never be inslaved. So Hypothetically, a man would identify himself as say Marce" (Mark) of Venice, Son of Karl, another would say " I am John, of Venice, Son of Karl, and the two having no relation. The Coat of Arms became necessary to identify differances between families as in the division of colors in the Carlo Coat of Arms- azure, (BLUE) AND (SILVER). But the Loyalty, truth and courage all Carlo"s lived by made them Brothers in arms , so to speak. The Carlo surname is of great "Noble origin, not to say all Carlo"s were (Nobles). But the original origin of Rome, or Roman is the decent of the surname Carlo.
