My g-g-g grandparents were Cornelius V. Remsen and Hannah Carman, who were born in 1816 and married in 1837. My family lived in the Town of Jamaica for many generations, with most of them being buried in Springfield Cemetery. I'd appreciate any information regarding Cornelius and Hannah. Thanks for the post.

Bill Amberman
amberman1@verizon.net

Hannah Carman was my great-great-great grandmother. She married Cornelius Voorhees Remsen and had a daughter Harriet. Harriet married John Glenn Henry Bedell and had a daughter Hannah Sarah. She married William P. Amberman, my great grandfather. I have an inscribed bible given to Hannah and Cornelius when they got married.

Bill Amberman

Sarah Bennett married to George Carpenter was sister to my Great X2 Grandfather Isaac Bennett. Their parents were John Isaac Bennett and Mary Rhoades.

John's Parents inscribed a bible with their Birthdates, Birthdates and a couple Deathdates of John and his siblings. John and Mary's children's birthdates are listed. The last inscription Added was Mary's death in 1857.

David, I would love to share copies of information with you!

sbennettperkowski@gmail.com

Sue

Sarah Ann Bennett married to Rem Remsen mentioned here was sister to my Great X3 Grandfather John Isaac Bennett who married Mary Rhodes. Their parents were Isaac VanHoek Bennett and Sarah VanVorhees.

Isaac and Sarah gifted John and Mary with a bible inscribed with birthdates for Isaac and Sarah along with their children (John and his siblings). It includes a few death dates of the siblings. John and Mary's children's births are listed and the last entry is Mary's death in 1857.

This would make us cousins. I would love to see copies of your imformation. Email is fine. I know my family has a few of them in it and It looks that maybe the dye side has a little relation to the James family of Jesse James... My mom got me into this at a young age and now I really enjoy it I have surpassed my mothers ancestry search... thanks again!

Don't feel embarrassed at all-we have all done the same thing a million times. Census records can truly throw a researcher off.

My primary thrust is the Carman surname but I do have a little on the Dye family.

Charles Alexander Dye was born in Kentucky 1863. He died 1936, age 73. He married Sudie Carman on 28 April 1881 in Perry County, Indiana. Charles was the son of John Dye and Margaret C. Clayton. John Dye was the son of Martin Kelly Dye and Mary Polly Timberlake.

Charles and Sudie had four children:
Betty Catherine Dye born 1883, died 15 April 1972 in Louisville, Kentucky, age 88. She married twice: 1) ? Meyers and 2) William J. Burge.
Margaret Bell Dye was born 1886 and died 15 January 1976, age 89. She married twice: 1) George Schuh and 2) ? Brown.
Ruth Dye was born 1890 and died 1920, age 30.
Robert Lee Dye born 26 September 1892.

Don't let the Indiana marriage of Charles and Sudie throw you. The Breckinridge County folks had a habit of a marriage-honeymoon. They would cross the Ohio River into Indiana, Illinois and marry there. They would remain there for a couple of weeks and then return to Kentucky. Some times they would bring the marriage record back to Kentucky with them and file it in Louisville, sometimes they just left the Return in whatever state they married in.

The above is all that I have on the Dye Family because I only trace a female Carman down one generation after the surrender of the surname in marriage.

I do have your Carman line all the way back so if you need help, please just ask.

Marvin

Let's approach this from a different angle. Was your Susan "Sudie" born 12 January 1866 in Kentucky?

If so, then she was the daughter of William DOCK Carman and Margaret E. Alexander. Margaret was the daughter of Thomas Alexander and Mary Polly Carman. This family is part of the large Breckinridge County, Kentucky Carmans.

William COOPER Carman was born 22 April 1827 in Warrentown, Jefferson County, Ohio. He died 6 December 1911 in St. Clairsville, Belmont County, Ohio.

William Cooper Carman married 1) Emily Hatcher and all of his children were born of Emily. He married 2) Margaret Amanda "Mary" Zimmerman. She was born February 1849 in Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of George Zimmerman and Pheobe Richmond. Eight children but no Susan Susie.

I am quite certain of my research. I believe that you may have read the incorrect information on the Census record.

Susan "Sudie" Carman married Charles Alexander Dye and had four children that I know of. Does this ring any bells?

Marvin

Carrol Carman Hall has researched the Carman family but covers mostly the branch that ended up in Illinois. Many Carmans do descend from John and Florence Carman who were early settlers on Long Island. There are however other lines that do not connect to this couple and there are many knowledgeable researchers besides Mr. Hall.

I'm not sure how to post a picture on the media gallery site, but I can look into it. If not, I'd be glad to send a picture to you via e-mail. While the bedspread is in very good shape, it looks like it may have been repaired, as Hannah's name wraps around the corner. We're guessing someone trimmed the edge and kept the part with her name, folding it over onto the other side. I'll try taking a picture of the Bible inscription and see how it comes out. I also have a charcoal drawing and some pictures of Hannah's husband, Cornelius (Grandpop)Remsen. If you have any questions, you can e-mail at amberman1@verizon.net.

Hannah Carman Remsen was my great-great-grandmother, and I am descended through her daughter Sarah Ann Remsen Brower. I would so like to see a picture of the bedspread she wove with her name and the date. If you have a digital camera, could you possibly take a picture and post it to the media gallery in your file? Also, if you are willing to share a picture of the Bible inscription, I would be so grateful. Being able to incorporate tangible items such as these make family history so much more colorful.

Carman Family in Binghamton N.Y.

Hello,

I am wondering if someone has any information on this family line. I'm trying to find information on Nancy J. Carman. Her and her father Isaac Carman are listed on the 1860 and 1870 U.S. Census, living in Binghamton N.Y. I believe Isaac's father was Thomas Carman. Isaac Carman had a son Frederick, and his daughter Nancy. It is Nancy that I am primarily interested in because I think she married Leonard Corby in 1873. If anyone has any information on this line I would really like to get in touch.

Me again- I have never been able to prove a birth ( or find/prove parents) for John Carman who married Diadama. We ( a few researchers over the years) all believe he was born before 1755 , probably in Hempstead, Long Island. That he died between 1810 and 1820 in New York ( likely Dutchess Co as they seem to be in that area at that time). Didn't see any more specifics on your site. Have you had any more luck? I have always been reluctant to assign him parents. Thanks again- Diane

After 10 years of research I'm circling back and rechecking...I am now thoroughly confused on who Caleb Carman married (Caleb of 1639-1693 era)...I had Elizabeth Seaman, I think based originally on George Carman's website work, but see several trees that have Elizabeth Seaman marrying a Jackson.

Does anyone have anything "definitive" on who Caleb married. This is important to me since Caleb is my 9X great grandfather and I'd like to be more assured about by ancestry...Thanks!!!

My family was concentrated in the Jamaica, LI, area and included Carmans, Remsens, Searles, and Bennets. My father's paternal grandmother was Sarah Ann Remsen Brower, b. 1840 d. 1924. Her father was Cornelius Voorhees Remsen, and her mother was Hannah Carman, daughter of Stephen Carman and Sarah Fowler. Cornelius V. Remsen's parents were Rem Remsen and Sarah Isaac Bennet.

My Searles connection is not direct. My father's Aunt Harriet Brower was married to Charles Searles.

If you have any of these people listed, I would appreciate a note and perhaps a copy of your pages if it can be done without endangering the sheets. Thank you for sharing your information.
