Newfound CARNAHAN family bible

I have found a family bible that links me to an Aaron Carnahan, b. 29 APR 1788 and Elvira, b. 17 OCT 1788. They had 4 boys, Fergus M., John T, David C (or G) and James H. I have listed all the births and deaths from John T. from the period 1833 to 1857. There are 13 children. I am willing to share the info with anyone who desires it, it's a treasure trove. I have validated almost all of the births and marriages with the LDS data. The copy isn't all that great, but the data is.

Ok, I have managed to trace back reliably to John Mason Carnahan when he was married to Elizabeth Ann Cardwell. Where I am having trouble is going back from there. There is just so much garbage running around that it is hard to find any reliable information beyond that. Does anyone have any reliable information as to who John Mason Carnahan's father and mother were?

I have been trying to find information and/or connections to the Carnahan's from Waldron, Scott County, Arkansas. My mother's maiden name was Pamela Jean Carnahan. She was born March 2, 1951, in Waldron, Arkansas. Her father was Richard Anderson Carnahan. He was born Sept. 12, 1925 (I don't know where); he died February 27, 1991, in Waldron, Arkansas. He had a WHOLE bunch of siblings, but I don't have any information on any of them. I would appreciate any info you have that might relate to them. You can email me at mrstubb@yahoo.com (please use "I might be a Carnahan" for the subject). Or you can visit a site that I am just starting:
http://tree4carnahan.tribalpages.com/
Thanks for any help!

Indiana CARNAHANS

Just yesterday I stumbled onto a marriage record for a David L CARNAHAN into my very Germanic family tree of HANDICK. The young couple were David L CARNAHAN and Augusta M HANDICK. He was born Feb 1860 in Ohio & she was born Sep 1869 in Vigo County, Indiana. They married 24 Feb 1892 & had two children: a boy born 11 Dec 1892 and a daughter, Lillie B CARNAHAN, born Jan 1896. I've found a record of Augusta's death 23 Jul 1902 in Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana but haven't been able to find out anymore about her. I haven't yet been able to find anything more about David or the daughter Lillie, or if there were any other children. Also, the male child born in 1892 wasn't listed in the 1900 Census but I haven't yet found a record of his death either.

I knew this sister of my grandfather's had existed, but had always been told that she went back to Germany when she grew up. It's a little startling to learn that no, she didn't.

Just wondering if this might match up with records someone on this board might have or if you could point me in the direction I need to go in order to find more info.

Blessings,
JoannH

Martha A Carnahan born March 15, 1844 daughter of Benamin Young Carnahan

I have a Martha Ann Carnahan born March 15, 1844 in Arkansas with Father born in Kentucky and Mother born in Tennessee according to the 1900 Texas census. Does anyone know if she is the daughter of Benjamin Young Carnahan and Hopestell Hardister? A Martha A Carnahan is listed with AB Taylor and a Hopestea? on the 1850 Marion Co Arkansas census, along with her brothers and sisters, Samuel, Green, Sarah, George Elisabeth, David and a Mary A Taylor. My Martha A Carnahan was in Texas in 1876 and married Isaac Hamilton Jan 9, 1876 in Cleburne City Johnson County Texas. She named one of her children Hope and another Benjamin. I have also found a David W. Carnahan and Marhta J Jones in Johnson County Texas with a daughter born there named Hopie D Carnahan in 1874 and a son named John O Carnahan born in 1876. I believe David W Carnahan is Martha's brother as listed on the 1850 Marion County Arkansas census as well as Benjamin and Hopestell's son and daughter. Can anyone help with this family and this connection?

Wilson Carnahan - 1834-1905 - obit

All I know about this Wilson Carnahan is that his mother's name was Elizabeth, b. abt 1793 in Ireland.
He married Julia A. Guilford and then married a Martha.

Then, I have a list of children from census records.

Take care - Emma

..........................
Obit - The Fort Wayne Journal Gazette - Fort Wayne, Allen Co., Indiana:
Carnahan
Wilson Carnahan, a well know farmer, died suddenly Tuesday morning, about 7:45 o'clock at the home of his son, William Carnahan, four miles southwest of Huntertown. On Monday he worked all day hoeing corn and doing chores and when he retired at night he felt as well as usual. About midnight however, he was siezed with pains in his chest, and he called to members of his family, who relieved his suffering to some extent by home remedies. Early Tuesday morning he became worse and his death occurred while he was alone in his room. Coroner J. E. Stults, who was called, found that the death was due to neuralgia of the heart.
Mr. Carnahan was seventy-three years of age and had been a resident of Allen county for many years. His wife died three years ago and since then he had made his home among his children. The later are Alvin Carnahan, Mrs. Elizabeth Schorpf, William D. Carnahan, Mrs. Margaret Depew, Mrs. Julia Edwards, and Mrs. Mima Larkins, all of Allen county, and Rachel and Gertrude, who live in Ohio

Carnahan-Tarvin Genealogy

The Tarvin Family Association is undertaking to publish a descendancy book for the family of each child of Rev. George Tarvin of Kentucky. His daughter, Rebecca H. Tarvin married Robert Freyer Carnahan, b. 1780 in Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania. They married 9 Feb 1806 in Fleming Co., Kentucky, and had 11 children. By about 1825, they had moved to Daviess Co., Indiana, where they spawned a large "colony" of Carnahans.

My late father, Verne Hoffman, headed up the Tarvin book committee for many years and was in correspondence with Phil Carnahan who posted frequently to this forum. I have Verne's correspondence files but Phil's email address is no longer active.

If anyone in the Carnahan clan is interested in this branch of the family or has information to share, we welcome you to our website where we are building an online database to support the book publishing effort. See http://www.tarvinfamily.org/genealogy and click on Line 8.

Best,
Gary

I am searching for information on my ggg-grandmother - Not sure of her first name - not sure much of anything other than - she was first married to a Shehan/Shehen, then after he died she married a man with the last name Smith; and then after he died she married a Carnahan. Have no first names for any of these guys. Only know that she was born in New York but lived in Tennessee in 1849 where my gg-grandfather Charles Shehen was born; she then moved to Missouri; and that she lived to be 97 years old. Any information would be most helpful. Thanks. Marsha

Robert Brown Carnhan Jr.

Memoirs of the Miami Valley
Robert Brown Carnahan Jr.
Middletown, Butler County, Ohio
The announcement of the sudden and untimely death of Robert Brown Carnahan, jr., On June 23, 1918, came as a shock to everyone who knew him, and this shock was accentuated by appreciation of the sterling qualities of the man, not less than by that of his splendid talents and the great worth of his practical achievement. He had been for eighteen years actively associated with the American Rolling Mill company, of Middletown, Ohio. On account of Mr. Carnahan's unbounded generosity, his warmth of manner and disposition, and his democratic ways, he had endeared himself to a host of loyal friends and co-workers, who sorrowfully deplore the unseasonable termination of his noble career as one of the world's productive workers. Mr. Carnahan, who stood
106
denitely as one of the representative men of Middletown at the time of his demise, was born in the city of Pittsburg, Pa., March 17, 1870, and was a son of Robert Brown Carnahan, sr., and Kate Ann (Ducknall) Carnahan, the latter of whom was reared and educated at Batavia, Ohio. Robert B. Carnahan, sr., became a prominent and distinguished member of the bar of Pennsylvania and was influential in public affairs in the old Keystone state. He was a personal friend of President Lincoln and Secretary Stanton, and under the administration of this martyred president he served as district attorney of the district of western Pennsylvania. He was a man of the highest professional attainments and achieved specially notable reputation as a corporation lawyer. The family name is one that has stood as an exponent of the loftiest patriotism in connection with the annals of American history, and it should be specially recorded in this connection that David Carnahan, great-grandfather of the subject of this memoir, served in the War of the Revolution, as a member of what was known as the American Flying Artillery, with which he took part in many of the important engagements marking the progress of the great conflict which brought the boon of national independence. Robert B. Carnahan, jr., acquired his preliminary education in the public schools of Pittsburg and then entered the University of Pittsburg, in which he was graduated as a member of the class of 1891. He received from this institution the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science, and later the honorary degree of Doctor of Science was conferred upon him by his alma mater, in recognition of his valuable inventions in connection with the steel industry. After his graduation in the University of Pittsburg, Mr. Carnahan became associated with the owners of the W. Dewees-Woods plant at McKeesport, Pennsylvania, and at the request of Mr. Wood, sr., he was sent south in connection with gold mining prospects. From 1883 to 1899 he was engaged in the open-hearth department of the McKeesport plant of the same company, and later for a short period he was associated with the Homestead works of the Carnegie Steel company, with which he did special work in connection with the manufacture of open-hearth steel. Mr. Carnahan was the first member of the present working organization of the American Rolling Mill company, by which he was employed early in the year 1900, shortly after the organization of this corporation. The plant which the company then proposed to build was to consist of a thirty-ton open-hearth furnace, a twenty-inch bar mill, four sheet mills, and a galvanizing plant and factory for fabricating sheet-metal products. This was the first time all of these operations had been brought together in one plant where the process was to be continuous from the open-hearth department through to the factory, and it marked a new era in steel-works development. Mr. Carnahan designed and constructed the company's first open-hearth furnace. At that time the open-hearth process of making steel was a comparatively new development, as it had not previously been generally employed in making steel for the production of sheet metal. Consequently there was much to be worked out along both scientific and productive lines, and Mr. Carnahan gave his undivided attention
107
to the development of this important feature of the business. For several years he lived and slept in the company's main office, in close proximity to the works, and during much of this period he applied himself both day and night. His first position with the American Rolling Mill company was that of superintendent of the open-hearth department, an office which he assumed in August, 1900. In August, 1903, he was advanced to the office of general superintendent, as successor of James B. Strawbridge, who was the first man to hold that position. In October, 1911, Mr. Carnahan was elected vice-president, with full charge of the research division, as well as the company's large patent interests, and he retained this important incumbency until the time of his death. Mr. Carnahan was one of the early believers and advocates of the pure-iron theory, which had been suggested by the Agricultural Department of the United States Government at Washington, and through his many successful activities and achievements he became a metallurgist of national repute. He was an indefatigable worker, and the actual production of commercially pure iron, now generally known as "Armco" iron, and its successful working into sheet metal, was due to his metallurgical knowledge, his indomitable determination to accomplish any task assigned to him, his untiring energy, and his great devotion to his work in the company's interests. It was in recognition of his invention of the Armco iron that he received the honorary collegiate degree of Doctor of Science, as previously noted in this context. He furnished all the data involved in the obtaining of the various patents issued to the American Rolling Mill company, and personally supervised the introduction of his patents in England and France, all his patents being duly recorded in the archives of the United States Patent Office, at Washington. In 1915 Mr. Carnahan received from the Panama-Pacific International exposition the first-class gold medal for his Armco patents. Although he was deeply absorbed in his business affairs, with his exacting executive duties, Mr. Carnahan found time and opportunity to participate in civic activities, as a loyal and public-spirited citizen. His efforts in the days following the 1913 flood, in which he raised a large fund for relief work, will long be remembered by Middletown people. He took also a prominent part in the campaign by which were raised funds to complete the Middletown hospital, and as treasurer and chairman of directors of that institution, he aided greatly in placing it upon a firm foundation. He was active also in church affairs, and he held for several years the office of treasurer of the First Presbyterian church of Middletown, a post which he eventually felt constrained to resign, owing to the manifold other demands upon his time and attention. His political allegiance was given to the Republican party and he affiliated with the Masonic fraternity. The year 1903, after he had located permanently at Middletown, recorded the marriage of Mr. Carnahan to Miss Frances P. Mills, of Hastings-on-the-Hudson, New York, the hymeneal ceremony having been performed in the city of Pittsburg, Pa., and the home of the young couple having been forthwith established at Middletown, where Mrs. Carnahan continues to reside since the
108
death of her husband. The one child of their union died within a few days after birth, Ideal relations marked the companionship of Mr. and Mrs. Carnahan, and he was never happier than when he was within the portals of his own home, the hospitality of which was most graciously extended by its popular chatelaine. Mrs. Carnahan is a daughter of the late Edmund S. Mills, of the state of New York, and the maiden name of her mother was Euphemia Morton Paton. In connection with his professional and industrial activities Mr. Carnahan held membership in the American Iron & Steel institute, the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the American Society for Testing Materials, and the British Iron & Steel institute, besides which he was a member of the Business Men's club of Cincinnati, and the Queen City and University clubs of Cincinnati and Chamber of Commerce of Middletown, Ohio. Mr. Carnahan will always be remembered for his generous impulses and for the single-minded and enthusiastic manner in which he met every problem, as well as for the kindly and affectionate way in which he greeted everyone. Untiring in his good works, he ever manifested toward all mankind the spirit that was shown by the little boy who, when asked if the child he was carrying were not too heavy for him, replied: "He's not heavy; you see, he's my brother." The indomitable, but generous, kindly, optimistic spirit of Robert B. Carnahan will live forever in the minds and hearts of the Armco men. In conclusion of this memoir it is pleasing to reproduce the following estimate, which bears its own lesson and significance: "Mr. Carnahan was rarely gifted with a capacity for personal relationships, and he never failed to make these a means of happiness and helpfulness to his fellows in business affairs, as well as in his more intimate friendships. The broad charity that 'thinketh no ill,' the passion for service that never failed, the generous spirit that loved fair play, as well as his intuitive knowledge of all classes of men, drew to him many a man who needed a helper, and caused him to be much sought as personal counselor and advisor. In this gracious service he never betrayed the confidence of those who trusted him, but always brought new inspiration and hope for the work of life."
Carol, I live at Reasnor IA 3 miles from Hewitt Cemetery where Benjamin and wife Elizabeth are buried. My cousin and I have not been able to trace back from Benjamin L and would appreciate any information you might have. Ronald J. Carnahan from had informed me Benjamin's wife Elizabeth Hayden's father was Jacob Hayden. He believed that Jacob'os family came from New Jersey. I am rather new at this research. I am helping another cousin who has more information, but neither of us have been able to go further back from Benjamin. We are fifth generation. Hewitt Cemetery records do no further back than 1904. They are in the process of obtaining further records going back from 1904. Would appreciate any help you might be able to furnish. Thank you, Shirley Carnahan Viney

Hi All,

I have some conflicting information and need some help sorting it all out.

I have a Frank Carnahan born 2 Oct 1861, died 11 Jan 1920, buried in the Rimersburg Cem, Clarion Co., PA

I have this Frank in my database twice. Once as the son of Taylor Carnahan (1834-1910) and Barbara Watterson (1834-abr 1874) and again as the son of Robert Paul Carnahan (1834-1890) and Catherine Elizabeth Troup (1840-1907)

The Frank, son of Taylor & Barbara was married to an Anna Mary Belle Wolffe, born abt 1864 in PA.

The Frank, son of Robert & Catherine was married to a Mary E (nln), also born abt 1864 in PA. this was apparently his 2nd marriage as he has 3 children by an unnamed spouse.

Both sets of parents above had sons named Frank who I have been able to find in the 1870 census.

I have found submitted family trees with this shown all kinds of different ways.

Does anyone have marriage information for either of these Franks which shows which wife belongs with which Frank and who their children were?

I have just posted the following tombstone photos submitted by Sue Benson. These burials are in the Munderf Cemetery in Jefferson Co., PA. All are descendants of James Carnahan (1806-1883) and Mary Fitz-Randolph (1802-1888).

Thomas Carnahan (1829-1888)
his wife
Mary (Taylor) Carnahan (1841-1920)

Joseph Harriger (1840-1883)
1st husband of Margaret Ann Carnahan (1850-1930)

Jeremiah Maitland (1845-1915)
2nd husband of Margaret Ann Carnahan (1850-1930)

All records indicate that Margaret is also buried at Munderf Cemetery, but no tombstone was found for her. Does anyone have any information about her burial?

Isaac (Ike) Irwin Black (1868-1951) and his wife
Minnie Amanda (Carnahan) Black (1872-1940)

Merle McCain Black (1897-1984), son of Isaac & Minnie Black.

Earl R.

We're looking for some information on Hugh and Elizabeth Carnahan. We're researching the possibilty that Elizabeth could possibly be Elizabeth Gray b. ArmstrongCounty PA abt 1846, daughter of Samuel N. Gray and his 2nd wife, Mary JaneWatterson. Think she may be Elizabeth (Gray?) b. Aug 1846 m. abt 1864 to Hugh Carnahan. Can anyone shed some light on whether we should pursue, or can someone disprove this for us?

Does anyone know if John D. Carnahan has any descendants? He was the son of Hugh and Elizabeth Carnahan of Jefferson County, PA - I believe he may have been adopted. Hugh and Elizabeth had one natural son, Thomas who I believe had died as a teenager. This may sound slightly morbid, but we're trying to track down any descendants to Hugh Carnahan in reference to the cemetery plot that's registered in Hugh's name in Munderf, Jefferson County, PA. According to the information I have, John may have been the only descendant who lived long enough to have a family, and I don't know whether he ever married or had children. I believe John was born circa 1892/1893 in Pennsylvania.

I am looking for information on my Gr.Gr. grandfather, Thomas J. Coutee that was married to Minerva Carnahan. They were married on February 22, 1887 in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. Thomas had a sister named Elizabeth that married Minerva's brother, Alfred Adam Carnahan on the same day. Elizabeth died about 10 years later and Alfred Adam married Victorine DeLacerde. I am trying to find out the parents of Thomas Coutee and Elizabeth Coutee. Minerva and Alfred Adam's father was Adam Carnahan and their mother was his mistress, Lise Brossett. Adam's land was connected on one side to land belonging to Emmanuel Coutee/Couty in Natchioches parish. I know Thomas and Elizabeth is connected some way to Emmanuel, but I don't know how. ANY information would be so greatly appreciated.
Thank You
Donna
Alaeagleeye@aol.com

Blue Goose Inn and Dawn's Workshop

Here is the 2nd set of photos Dawn sent. This is just amazing. My mother's sister, Hazel, was talented like this. I always envied her for the talent she possessed.
-------------------------
Hi Phil

Since we're Irish I thought I'd send this one too, just for fun.
It's the Blue Goose Inn, Saturday night maybe. No Fitz
Randolphs in the crowd though.

Dawn
------------------------
Hi Phil

This is the last I'll send. My workshop with half of the mural I painted and buildings in various stages of completion.
------------------------
A note on the mural, except for the details of houses, waterfalls, etc., which were painted with brushes, it was all done using small household sponges from the grocery store. Dribbling a number of colors (acrilic, in small bottles at any craft store) on a damp sponge together and give a bit of a squeeze to blend just a bit. The secret is have the lay of the land in your mind and using a fair amount of pressure, move the sponge to shape hills, lake, whatever, always starting in the far distance, then middle, then front, etc. Little bits of sponge can be shaped like fir trees, bushes, flowers and dabbed on, etc. It's only paint and can be changed, if you don't like the effect. Just decide on the season and choose appropriate colors.

Murals are great fun to do and really easy with a sponge, if time consuming.

In the near distance I painted in all the houses I've ever lived in--from the house where I was born to where I live now. If there's interest or need I could photograph them too. You can only see one, a white one near the bottom in that photo. It was in a valley, not on a hill, and had a lovely creek flowing by, so I added a bit of stone and a stream. The house in The
Hollow, where I lived from age 2 1/2 until age 8--my Eden.

Fitz's Folly

The following was sent to me by Dawn Carnahan. I though it was so good I had to share it with the list.
-------------------------------------------------------------
This is just for fun. I build miniatures and have also written a series of connected short stories. This is a character from the stories, Hartshorne Fitz Randolph in his detached study that, along with his house, the town calls "Fitz's Folly". The shields on the wall are the College of Heraldry's gift to Uther Pendragon (blue) and King Arthur. I'm sending this view
because it shows something of the suedo stained glass window I made, which is the actual Fitz Randolph arms. You can see the chapeau with ermine but unfortunately not the wenvyn of the last on top of it. I have yet to decide how to add the motto, which I think is "never behind," but I'm not sure without looking it up. The mantle is made by woodburning plus carving of the two little knights supporting it. My first and only wood carving attempt.

In the stories, this is where Hart can play with his weapons, read his moldy old books and have the company of his dog, named Merlin--none of which his red haired wife Alice will allow in the house. The ceiling has been lifted out in the picture to show more light through the window. I had great
fun with this. Made the box, every stone set by hand, but great fun.

Dawn

I am looking for information on my grandfathers family. His name was Roscoe Ciciroe Carnahan. I don't know who his parents were so i'm kinda stuck. I never met him as he died of heart failure way before i came around. He married Elizabeth Hester Brammer which was my grandmother but i do think he had a first wife also maybe by the name of Sarah and it is possible that she died young. I do know that there are relatives in Evansville and Princeton area in Indiana USA. Any info would be helpfull and appreciated.
Carnahan Immigration from Co Antrim Ireland

My ancestor, William Carnahan, born Ireland 1720-1725, left Ireland around 1760 with 6 sons - William, John, James, David, Joseph, Alexander and 3 daughters (believe one named Elizabeth). The children were born near Randalstown, near Shane's Castle in Co. Antrim Ireland. They settled in Pennsylvania. Anyone else have any info on them? We are particularly interested in son John. He married Fanny (believe last name Wilson). Also believe he was killed early in the 1770s so not much history. Would like any info on immigration as well as John, his brothers, etc. Children were all born in Ireland between 1740-1750.

We have some we could share.

The known Smith children are:

1. Harriet Smith (c1791 VA - ?) m. Ninian Beall, 21 Nov 1809, Wheeling, WVA; they had at least one daughter, Louisa.

2. Nathaniel Wilson Smith (9 Dec 1797, Wheeling, WVA-20 Aug 1873 Decatur, Macon Co, IL) m1 Rebecca Culbertson, 21 Dec 1819, Franklin Co, OH; children: Mary Jane, Esther "Hetty", Martha, Culbertson; m2 Jane E. __, m c1833; children: Lizzie, Charles Lloyd, Marcus D, Anthony, Clara; Nathaniel was a jeweler in Pittsburgh, PA, Columbus, Ohio, and Wheeling, WVA, before he and his family moved to Clinton, IL by 1854, and by 1860 to Matoon, Coles Co, IL.

3. Caroline Smith (15 Mar 1806 VA-21 May 1865) m James Carnahan, 21 Jan 1830, Wheeling, WVA.; they had several children: Henry, Ann, Mary, Louisa, Elizabeth, John R, Wallace (a minister), and Isabella. This Carnahan family moved by 1860 to Newport, Campbell Co, KY, with Caroline as head of household; by 1870 many of the children were living together w/o mother in Greenville, Washington Co, Mississippi.

Henry Smith was a Colonel in the Revolutionary War. He was on the 1790 federal census for Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co, PA, living alone so it is presumed he married Mary Irish sometime after the census; he and his wife were in Wheeling c1791 when daughter Harriet was born; Henry is mentioned as one of the founders of Wheeling.

In doing some research for a friend, I've found Blenda Nicholson, b. 1877 Iowa m. Ellis Vallow, b. 1875 Illinois, on 14 November 1898. Blenda shows up on the 1880 census in the home of her grandparents, William and Sarah Jane Carnahan, in Elk Creek Township, Jasper County, Iowa.

I found her parents, James Nicholson m. Lacy Carnahan on 27 November 1876 listed on the Jasper County, Iowa Marriage Register, Volume II 1870 - 1878.

There's also a reference in the Cemetery Index:
Nickolson, James - EKCK-025a
NIckolson, Tacy (Carnahan) - EKCK-025a
as well as for Nickolson, Blinda - EKCK-025a

Could you possibly fill me in a little on this family? What are the dates of deaths for James Nicholson and Lacy Carnahan Nicholson? I'm wondering how Blenda came to be in Livingston, Marion County, Illinois? Who is the Blinda Nickolson that's buried there?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Thanks
Jr. Bradshaw

CARNAHAN IMMIGRATION

I have been searching for records of the Carnahan immigration from Ireland and have not been able to find any records. However, there was a story circulating that they came on a Private Vessel with 8 or more families, one or more of whom owned this vessel. (These families are named above). They left Londonderry, Antrim Co, IR ca 1729-1733 and landed at Cape Henlopen, Delaware. Since I was unable to find any ship/passenger records I decided to track the families and they indeed did migrate together and intermarried into Cumberland and then some into Westmoreland County. The first reference I found to this story was from the Brady Annals written in 1845. I am still attempting to find how our ancestors came to America.....if anyone has any info on their immigration, the name of a ship, or reference to any of the above named families, please contact me as I have more information.

Lloyd Carnahan was twenty-four years old and un married. A few months ago he discovered a broken rail in the Pittsburgh tracks, between Dunkirk and Washington, Ohio, a few minutes before the west bound passenger train, No. 9 was due and by prompt action he warned the engineer in tme to prevent a wreck and possibly great loss of life. The company wished to reward the young man and with that end in view sent an agent to consult with him. Carnahan refused a money present, but hinted that a position as fireman would not be refused. He was accordingly, given work and during his short but efficient service had ingratiated himself into the esteem of the officers and his fellow trainmen and was considered one of the best men in the service. He was a member of the Voluntary Relief association, holding a policy for $750.
