Re: Nelson Carpenter - Green County, KY, Native American Indian?

Indiana was closer in a travel line from Green Co. Kentucky, but the 1850 census shows a total of ~25,000 people categorized as black, colored, or mulatto in Ohio at that census, whereas Indiana had only ~11,000 in the same categories, suggesting that perhaps Ohio was a more supportive destination. His year and place of birth leave a lot of room for speculation as to his past -- his enlistment record states he was age 26 in Dec 1864 thus born c1838, and born in KY; the 1870 census shows him as age 26 thus born c1844, and born in GA; his death record in Savannah shows him as age 45 in 1876 thus born c1831, and born in GA. Georgia might just be his presumed origin though. The first mention of location in his military record is his enlistment in Dec 1864 on Hilton Head Island, between Savannah and Charleston. Hilton Head had been occupied by Union forces since Nov 1861 and was a large garrison, so people moved to the island to take advantage of the work, including former slaves, who also gained non-slave status there, so it was undoubtedly a magnet destination for people from all walks of life. His recruitment was "for Connecticut" as shown twice in the record, at the top of his enlistment form and again on the muster roll dated 31 Dec 1864 on Hilton Head where it says "To be accredited to the State of Connecticut", but it appears that the USCT units were being attached to Union states for accounting purposes since the soldiers were from Confederate states that were still in rebellion.

Savannah had a thriving community of free people of color in business and agriculture before the Civil War, so that may have been his reason for moving there. For example, see Whittington Johnson's "Free Blacks in Antebellum Savannah: An Economic Profile" in The Georgia Historical Quarterly 64(4), (Winter, 1980), pp. 418-431, http://www.jstor.org/stable/40580706.

I considered "Sead" or "Dead" too but the first letter doesn't look anything like the S in Samuel, or the D in the month of application December. The record has examples of 17 capital letters, leaving only 9 missing, of which only Q and Z are entirely likely, so the name might be either Qead or Zead, neither of which is sensical in that form though.
Hi Terry,

Thank you for responding! Nelson only had two daughter (one of whom was my gg-grandmother), so no direct male descendants.

I did see that white Carpenter family but also noted they did not own slaves or had any "free people of color" with them.

Although the info in the census is often wrong, at one point, my gg-grandmother identified her father's birth place as Ohio (in the 1880 census). I wonder if he was born in Green County, KY but raised in Ohio?

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1880usfedcen&a...

I understand a movement to the South after the Civil War, but he moved to Savannah right before the Civil War. That seems strange to me but maybe not.

And I also did not know what to make of the names listed in his Freedman's Bank Account. I wasn't sure if that was "Sead" or "Dead" - as indicating that his brother was dead. And I also wonder why the father's name was crossed out and relisted as Sam.

Again, thanks!!!
Re: Nelson Carpenter - Green County, KY, Native American Indian?

The Carpenters in Green Co. KY from the 1820 through 1840 censuses were originally from Virginia, and moved on to Indiana in the late 1820s through the 1840s. Since they came from a slave state and moved through another, they might have been slave owners, but the censuses don't show them with any slaves in 1820, 1830, or 1840 in Kentucky, or subsequently in Indiana.

That fact that Nelson Carpenter was a free man and not a slave suggests his mother was a free woman, since, generally speaking, children born to a free woman were free, whereas children born to an enslaved woman were not. But he could have been born to a free woman of color -- there was a larger population of free people of color in the colonial and antebellum South than generally understood. DNA testing might be useful in determining racial heritage, particularly if a male Carpenter-surnamed descendant of one of Nelson's brothers can be located -- it might reveal or rule out Native American or European heritage.

A southward move immediately after the Civil War is not too unusual -- during the early years of the post-war Reconstruction era, many northerners moved to the former Confederate states to take government and non-government jobs formerly held by native southerners. Then when the 'Jim Crow' era began in the 1870s, many of them returned north to escape segregationist laws.

My reading of the Freedman's bank record suggests his brothers were Sead? (first and last letters of the name uncertain) and Patrick Henry (as in Patrick Henry of the American Revolution). It might be significant that his father's name is first recorded as John, then crossed out and Samuel written over it.
Nelson Carpenter - Green County, KY, Native American Indian?

Hi all,

My ggg-grandfather was Nelson Carpenter. What I do know about him is that he was born around 1838 in Green County, Kentucky. At some point before 1864, he moves southeast to Savannah, GA and married my ggg-grandmother Elizabeth (Eliza) Jenkins and enlists in the 34th U.S. Colored Regiment with his wife's brothers. He survives the war, signs up for a Freedman's Bank Account in 1866, and he shows up in the 1870 Census in Savannah, GA with his wife Elizabeth and my gg-grandmother Moselle Carpenter. He dies sometime between 1870 and 1880, and his widow and children show up in the 1880 census in Boston, MA.
I located his Civil War muster file and his Freedman's Bank application and both indicate that he was born in Green County, Kentucky. His Freedman's Bank Account also states that he was free and not a former slave. (While it was mostly newly freed slaves who signed up for accounts, many poor people of other backgrounds including whites signed up for Freedman Bank accounts)
HIs physical description in his Civil War record is "yellow skin" "black hair and eyes" "5'11 1/2 height"
He lists the names of his parents Samuel and Lucy and siblings Patrick, Henry, Patsie, Ann, Nancy in his bank application but I have not been able to locate them in any census or any other historical document. Furthermore, I can't seem to find any Carpenters in Green County, Kentucky during that period.
This leads me to believe that his family was there temporarily. What is also strange is his move from central Kentucky to southeast Georgia. Most people were moving in the other direction. If he was black and a former slave, it seems highly unlikely he would move to the center of the slave trade.
And we know he was free according to his bank application. All of this leads me to believe that he was possibly American Indian. I've seen the name Carpenter associated with Shawnee people and the Shawnee moved around quite a bit and lived in Kentucky.

Please let me know if you know more about the Carpenters in Kentucky and specifically Green County, Kentucky. And any tips on how I can find out more about Nelson Carpenter.

Carpenter of Prussia

I am researching Carpenter Lineage originating in Prussia. I have been able to trace back to an Alexander Carpenter Born 1808 in Prussia who married Anna M Class. I have been unable to find any information on either of these ancestors and suspect that they may have actually had more Germanic sounding names such Claus or Classe, or converted names such as Zimmermann = Carpenter. No amount of research has given me any clues, and so I am at a dead end. Anyone with any knowledge or suggestions about researching Carpenters originating in Prussia would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

William A. Carpenter
Looking for Parents of Ira Carpenter, B1809 Vermont

I would appreciate any hints and tips to point me in the right direction around my brick wall of lack of information on the childhood and the parents and siblings of the following couple:

Ira Carpenter
born abt 1809 in Vermont, died abt 1891 Ohio
and
Jerusha (Jones?)
born abt 1809 in New York, died abt 1900 Ohio
probably married in Vermont btwn 1825-1834, likely abt 1832

Children:
Son - Alanson "Alonzo" Carpenter, b1834 Vermont
married bef 1860, probably Ohio to Carlesta Edwards, born abt 1835 New York (sister of Nelson, she is variably listed as Clarissa, Carlista, Celesta, Celestia)

Son - Chauncey Peletiah Carpenter, b1838 Vermont
married in Ohio 1876, to Mary Helen Lang, born 1847 Ohio

Daughter - Josephine Carpenter, b1840 St Lawrence, New York
married in Ohio 1856, to Nelson Edwards, born 1833 New York (brother of Carlesta)

Son - Velorus Carpenter, b1845 New York, a tinker and jeweller, not sure that he ever married.

Son - Frederick (W?, M?, Mort***?) Carpenter, born 1847 Ohio
based on family story, may have died as young adult between 1870 and 1878.

-presumably Ira was both born and raised in Vermont, but given Jerusha was born, and probably raised in New York, and they as a couple later moved to New York, it's likely Jerusha, and possibly Ira, had family relations and/or connections in New York.
-they were likely in Vermont from abt 1830(or earlier) to 1838
-based on family history, the family moved from Vermont to St Lawrence, New York, crossing over ice of Lake Champlain by ox cart, when Chauncey was a baby, probably the winter of 1838, which jives with the children's birthdates and birthplaces
-1840 US Census for St Lawrence, New York shows a family headed by Ira Carpenter, matching the ages of Ira, Jerusha, Alanson, Chauncey and Josephine.
-Based on birthplaces of the last two children and family stories, the family moved to Ohio abt 1846, early 1847.
-Entire family is listed in 1850 census for Medina, Medina County, Ohio.
-Based on Census and family records all stayed in the Lorain County, Ohio area into the 1900s, except Alanson, who seems to have settled in Iowa by the time of the 1870 census.

John Carpenter is mentioned in an old history book "Old Westmoreland" by Edgar Wakefield Hassler; it's free on Google Books. I've got it on my Kindle and I know he's mentioned in there 3 or 4 times as he was captured by the Indians.

He also may be cited in "Howe's History of Ohio". Remember that before Ohio became a state it was part of Virginia, the part called Ohio County. Parts of what is now Pennsylvania and West Virginia were in dispute between Virginia and Pennsylvania when they were yet 13 separate colonies.

The John Carpenter I mention fought "late" in the French and Indian War, actually I think in the period of the Revolution when there was still a war with the Indians because they were aligned with the British via Detroit which the British had acquired from the French at the end of the French and Indian War. So the time period would be 1780 +/- 4 or 5 years. You could look in papers of George Washington and those of the generals who commanded Fort Pitt, what is now Pittsburg, from say 1770 - 1790. The job was very difficult and commanders did not last long in this post.

Hello there

I believe I can help you. Rosanna Carpenter Perry was the sister of my g-g-grandfather, Francis B. Carpenter. Their father was Jesse Carpenter and their mother was Ruth Beall Carpenter. The Beall family was a large, wealthy, land owning family in eastern Maryland (mostly Prince Georges County, Anne Arundel Co. etc) Ruth's father's name was also Francis, son of John, son of Robert. On the Carpenter side, I am stuck at Jesse. Would love to find out who his father and mother were. Will probably have to go back to Maryland for further research. How are you related to Rosanna? I have quite a bit of information if you are interested in further details. Rosanna is buried in Belmont County, Ohio; I can also give you the name of the cemetery...I just have to look it up. I have a public family tree "Carpenter Family". Please feel free to look at the info I have posted.

I did look at those letters, but they don't add anything to the southern Carpenter lines which are my primary interest. I hope you will share your findings from the U Michigan collection.

The daughter Lucy may be an error -- the date given for her birth (28 May 1806) is the same date given for Lucy Blanding's marriage to Phanuel Carpenter (28 May 1806).

The records I've seen don't give a date Lucy (Blanding) Carpenter returned to MA.
