Hi! I know this is kinda late but I am also a Carpio. I was born in Ecuador (right above peru) and i fought out junior year in highschool that i was part Italian. I searched online saying the name originated from the Papal States in Italy. If anyone has any information i would love to read about it.

Hi! This is Fred. I got a little excited reading your post. You see, my grandfather and Ma is also from Aklan. I also have some cousins in Manila although I have not seen them for many years. While in the military service I met this guy, last name Carpio whose family is also from Aklan. The first time I've seen this guy was like looking at a mirror. We are about the same height looked exactly alike. Even my friends at the time had mistaken him for me. Funny. It would be nice to hear from you. Take care.

hi this is cris a carpio clan member as you all were, we are form the philippines, as you all know or may not know the philippines had been colonized by the spaniards for 333 years. i do believe that our last name came from spain as many spaniards had married locals from our country. thus the spread of spanish origin surnames came across. though we all share the common predicaments of knowing all our relatives (those who have surnames of carpio) since it is rare to meet and find one i am glad many of us shares the enthusiasm of finding our ancestral roots. here in the philippines carpio's are situated mainly (as i know it ofcourse) at bulacan area, manila, tarlac, pampanga, batangas, mindoro, pangasinan, baguio or in moutain province where my great grand father luis carpio was believed to came from, he was said to be the youngest child of a alleged well known carpio family there. he was said to run away from home and wander off through the regions of luzon down to mindoro where he found her fifth wife my great grand mother maria operio-carpio. he died and was buried at mindoro occidental at the family cemetery.

Yes, Carpio is Italian as well as Spanish, but most commonly Basque. I met a Catholic Pastor from the Basque Valley here in San Antonio, Tx. who shared with me that the name of the main street in his home town is Bernardo del Carpio. My Father's name is Bernardo Carpio. As you might know, Bernardo del Carpio was a Spanish Knight and very famous hero. He is credited for defeating the great French Roland.
My mother and father immigrated from Mexico to Douglas, Arizona in 1942. Don't know much else about the immediate family.

Have you searched for your wife's potential relatives at?:
http://paginasblancas.com.pe/

Note that the surnames 'Carpio' and 'del Carpio' are far from rare in Peru. Hence, a search can be tedious.

Depending on how widely and deeply you want to explore your wife's family, remember that what is now Bolivia was once 'Alto Peru'.

See my other post in this forum if you're interested in where in Spain the name 'Carpio' may have originated.

Philip Decker
Sarasota, Florida, USA

European origin(s) of CARPIO (and Del Carpio) surnames?

In this forum, the origin of the surname CARPIO has been attributed to both Italy and Spain.

I have been unable to find any evidence that would suggest the name originated in Italy, nor has any been offered in this forum to support that position.

On the other hand, I have found three villages in Spain that include the word Carpio in their names:

1) Carpio, Valladolid, Castilla y Leon, España (Spain)
41°12'48.23" North (41.2134°)
5° 6'38.92" West (-5.11081°)
150 km NW of Madrid, half way between Valladolid and Salamanca.

2) Carpio de Azaba, Salamanca, Castilla y Leon, España
40°35'45.39" North (40.5959°)
6°38'48.42" West (-6.64678°)
90 km SW of Salamanca.

3) El Carpio, Cordoba, Andalucia, España
37°56'25.93" North (37.9405°)
4°29'55.59" West (-4.49878°)
25 km East of Cordoba.

Has anyone done any work that traces the name to one or more of those three villages (or to some other one that I have not yet discovered)?

Additionally, is there reason to believe that the surnames 'Carpio' and 'del Carpio' have the same, or different, geographic origin(s)?

My mother was a Carpio. Her family comes from the area around Silao and Leon in the state of Guanajuato in Mexico. There were and are still many Carpios in that area of Mexico. From my mother's family, only her father came to the United States and this should interest you, settled in Pueblo, Colorado. But none of the names you listed appear in my family tree.

CARPIOs are both my cousins, and affineal kin by marriage.
EDRALIN is my maternal grand mother's surname.

Unfortunately, the only Felipa Edralin that I know of, was Da. Felipa Edralin who was the third spouse of D. Hermengildo dela Cuesta who married on 22 June 1822.

Still, if you're an Edralin (de la Pasion/ Pasion) from Sarrat, Ilocos Norte or an Edralin (TBD) from San Esteban, Ilocos Sur; I'm sure related. Somehow. Send email to Shinobu01@msn.com for offline discussion(s).

Aloha,
Bryan Jamias Quisquirin

Renette:

Are you the daughter of Ricardo and Rosaline Carpio, gdaughter of Byron and Gloria Carpio? If so, you're ggrandparents were from the Philippines. Francesca Franco was from Baliwag, Bulacan, and married Ricardo Carpio who was from Bawang, Batangas. They had 12 children -- 7 boys and 5 girls.

In listening to the older generation (your gfather, my dad, and their siblings) talk, Ricardo's side of the family came from Spain.

In any case, if this is the same family, then your dad and I are cousins. His dad (Byron) and my dad (Melchor, a.k.a. Mitchell) were brothers.

Let me know. I have a booklet that was given out back in August 1979 when the Carpio Family had a reunion in Honolulu. It was current at that time, but it is now in need of an update. I can send it to you if you want. It gives the history of the family and all the children and families at that time.

Aloha, Chickie
