CARRASCO, JUAN R. Oct. 31, 1931 to Jan. 3, 2004 Juan was born in Balmorhea, Texas, and moved his family to San Diego in 1964. For 27 years, Juan was the Senior Night Assistant at the famed 200 inch telescope at the Palomar Observatory. Juan ' s care and love for the 200 inch telescope is legendary and chronicled in the award winning book, First Light. The respect the astronomy community had for Juan was shown when famous astronomer C.S. Shoemaker named an object after him, 4171 Carrasco, in 1986. Juan is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lily Carrasco; daughters Vera Howell and Peggy Wilkinson; grandchildren Stephen and Katie; brother Fernando Carrasco; sisters Aurora Cushman, Guadalupe Rubio and Estella Carrasco. Mass: 10 a.m. tomorrow at Holy Family Catholic Church in Linda Vista. Internment: immediately following Mass, El Camino Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations to UCSD Cancer Center Foundation, 9500 Gilman Drive, #0658, La Jolla, 92093-0658.
