Lance,

I've just started getting interested in genealogy myself, and so far I've found out that I too and a descendant of Peter A. Carreras. His son John Henry would be my great, great grandfather. If you have found any information that dates back to Juan's family while still in Minorca, I would love to hear some of it.

Thanks,
Justin Carreras

Re: Juan Carreras of Minorca, Spain

New Orleans had a whole Minorcian Society in the mid 19th century. Besides your family, my family, Gandolfo, also arrived in New Orleans from Mahon around 1850. Also, New Orleans' most famous swordsman, Don Jose "Pepe" Ulla was from Mahon about the same time. The Minorcian Society appears to have been a mutal aid society mainly used for funerals and burials. But, there are clear references to it contemporary obituaries. Although a distinct group, there is very little else presently available about what must have some distinct Mahon-New Orleans immigration. Like your family, my family (Gandolfo) were merchants.

The only other contact I've had with Minorcians was a fellow from St. Augustine, Florida. Minorica was a British possession from 1713 until the early 19th century. England also obtained Florida from Spain between 1762 and 1783. During this time the British forced many Minorcians to settle in St. Augustine, Florida.

Overall, the best way to describe the Minorcians in New Orleans is that they were Spaniards, with Italian sounding names, who usually spoke French.

By the way, the St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery on Louisa and Desire Streets (not far from St. Roch) was created by Don Pepe Ulla. Supposedly to accomodate his many dueling opponents.

Looking for information on the Carreras family that migrated from Mahon, Island of Minorca, Spain to New Orleans, LA, in the mid 1800's. Juan married Catherine Schwabb. He was a businessman and apparently made several trips between NO and Minorca. Some of his children were born in New Orleans, others in Minorca. One of his son's was Peter A. Carreras (my ggrandfather) who married Josephine Klung. Would appreciate any info on any of these families.

Wonderful! Well, here are the Carreras that I have:
There was a Joaquina Carreras in Spain who married a Pérez. They had a son Ceferino Pérez Carreras (born ca 1858 in Asturias,Spain, died 1921 in Cruces, Las Villas, Cuba), who was my great-grandfather. He came over to Cuba when he was just 13. He ran a store in the village of Potrerillo for a while, then moved to Camarones for a while, then moved to Cruces. He had 10 children by his wife Caridad Eladia Capote.
He had two Carreras cousins, sons of the unnamed brother of his mother Joaquina Carreras. They were Primo and Segundo. Primo Carreras had three children: Pepe, Salvador, and Lutgarda.
I am afraid that is all I know so far!

Yes, my father was a Carreras from Las Villas. Unfortunately I myself don't know much about them, which is why I was searching this site.

I'm looking for information related to Narciso Carreras. His wife was Francesca, born 1856. Narcisco was a prison guard and died in Ponce, Puerto Rico during a prison riot. His wife "immigrated" through Florida and came to Kalamazoo, Michigan with her three children Narcisco (Cecil), Isabell and Mercedes.

I don't know where my grandfather was born, but his name was Isabel. As far as I know, there were no other relatives in New Mexico. I've always been curious but I have no other information. I don't even know my grandmother's maiden name. I have no known relatives on the Carreras side of the family. Guess it will remain a mystery!
