Andrew Carrier - Dutchess County, NY in 1800

Hi,

There is an Andrew Carrier in the 1800 Census of the Twon of Clinton, Dutchess County, NY. He is a neighbor to William Heustis, who by 1810 had moved to the Town of Thompson, Sullivan County, NY, where he had other Carrier neighbors. His son may have married the daughter of Elizabeth Carrier, who I have as the daughter of Asa Carrier, born 1744 in CT.

Can anyone suggest who this Andrew is?

Amariah Carrier, Honor Hogins

For those interested in Amariah Carrier: I have a letter/genealogy written by Solomon Shefield Carrier in 1901 or before. He says: "He was the son of Jesse H. Carrier and was born June 9, 1826 in Jamestown NY. He says his father was born in Albany NY in 1794 and moved with his folks to Chautaugue county in 1810 and settled on the west side of Chautauque Lake. He says Jesse's father was Amariah Carrier and that he knows very little about his ancestors except that his father died in the army when he was small. His mother married a man by the name of Enoch Rowley and had two children by that marriage, Enoch and Polly.
On the Hogins side he says that his grandfather (Amariah) married Honer Hogins. By that union there were eight children: Jesse, my father, Samantha, Robert, Rachel, David, Henry, Lucy and Amariah.
Grandfather Hogins was an old Revolutionary soldier. He served seven years during the war. Grandmother Hogins had one brother who name was Amos. Granfather Hogins came west with Grandfather Carrier. I recollect him well. I was about eight years old when his died. His wife died some years before he did. They were buried on the west side of Chautauque Lake. Amos, grandmother's brother, raised a large family, six boys and three girls. I disremember their names. Some of them are about the Lakes yet, or was a few years ago.

I would be interested in information on Honor Hogins. Thanks Linda

My thoughts on Amariah Carrier

Well here are my thoughts on this issue so far, this is all based on Gen Web, Heritage Quest and info I have had so long I don't know where it came from.

Concerning Amaziah and Amariah being the same person.

For Amaziah and Abiah: I have a marriage date of 1790 but the first child born in 1786 last child 1796, so she could have died young or been #2 wife.

Of the children of Amariah and Honor Hogins that I have dates for they were all born between 1795-1807, I have no marriage date at all. This only leaves a year difference for her to have been married to Amaziah. However I have Abaih not dead until 1834

If Amariah and Amaziah both were if fact different people who was Amariahs daddy? The only Carriers in that area at that time had to be Martha and Thomas’s descendants. But from my limited resources Neither Andrew, or Thomas Jr had any children or grandchildren along these names or lines. The years of birth help with the process of elimination.

Clearly on the 1820 images of the Chautauqua, Harmony Township, NY, Amariah (Amonioh) is listed. Amariah is one person away from Nathaniel Fenner the father of his son Roberts future wife.

In the same 1820 census Rensselaer, Stephenson NY we find Amaziah. So he can’t be listed so close in the same census even if he did move could he? Amaziah is next to two Samuel Carriers one of which is no doubt his son. Conslusion: Amariah and Amaziah can not be the same person.

They lived about 358 miles apart (mapquest)

More on Nathaniel and Amariah: History of Chautauqua County, New York Matthews and Warrenby Andrew W. Young 1875
1st page of Busti history talks of Nathaniel Fenner settling on lot 15 then a few pages later Amariah on lot 15.

There is a Hood Cemetery in Crawford Co PA that happens to be off of Carrier Rd. Perhaps that would be a good cemetery to start with to look for Amariah.

David Carrier supposed son of Amariah was the only one that was supposedly born in Pennsylvania, we might assume this is when Amariah made his move there.
PS one of Roberts sons was also born in PA

As for the mysterious Hogins family it can’t be a coincidence that the only Hogins in New York 1800 and 1810 census (Heritage Quest) were both from Rensselaer, Stephenson ( where Amaziah died.) and Berlin NY.
Also Amos Hogins 1810 shows one female under 10, this would be about right for our miss Hogins.

1820 Harmony NY census has our Amariah with as best as I can figure he and his wife are over 45,which is acurate,
two males under 10, could be Amariah Jr and Henry,
2 males bet 16-26,which could be David and Robert
two female under 16.Which could be Samantha and Lucy
Jesse and Rachel were 22 and 25 and both married by now

So now what- were they twins?, likely but no proof, I would like to put this to rest but can’t without something to make them twins or at least make Amariah Amos’s son.
I think I have exhausted my web research for now. Hoping you folks on the East coast can help with your foot work. A matching birth date on Amariah’s grave would be sweet.

Lynda

He was born on July 10/1742, son of John, son of Andrew, son of Thomas & Martha. He married Hannah Lewis in Huntington,New York. I know there was an Andrew Green Carrier in the Carrier family descendants, but where did the Green name come into it. Did the Green I'm looking for have another name?.

I have recently started trying to figure out my
ggrandmothers side of the tree. Her name is Gertrude Carrier b.1779 d.
1933 Her parents were Eugene Carrier b. 1852 Pa and Almira Carrier b.
abt.1828 Pa.
She married Alvin Leonard. b.1884 d. 1954. Eugene's parents were
Bengaman b.abt 1825 Matilda Carrier b.abt.1830. I have found them in
several census his name being spelled : Binjle Benj and Bengaman. I
found them in the 1870 census in Auborn Sus,County Pa and the 1880
Meshoppen,Wyoming Pa. It seems Eugene and Almira moved a lot too. They
are in Vestal, Ny Whiteside,Ill Nichols, Ny and are buried in Athens,Pa
Bradford county. Well anyway I am now trying to find the parents of Ben
and Matilda. The census say his father was born in Mass. and his mother
Conn. I am hopeing to connect with others and figure this puzzle out.
Thank you,
Shannon Prough
prough@localnet.com

Would like to contact descendants of Oliver Watson Richmond who was born in WV in 1877 and died (age 98) in NC in 1974. Known children were Thomas, Joline, Charlene (Carrier), and Lorene (Carpenter). Other possible children were Doris and step-daughters Gertrude, Elaine, and June.

I am researching the father of Oliver, one W.W. Richmond and have hopes that the descendants of Oliver can help me with that. Oliver's sister Cora was my great-grandmother. I am of course willing to share all the information that I have.

Carrier, R. M. in 1929 Richmond, VA yearbook

RE: The Marshallite, 1929 John Marshall High School yearbook (Richmond, VA)

Carrier, R. M.

This yearbook lists the members of the Senior class of 1929, faculty members, members of the Corps of Cadets, and many members of various clubs (not all). Unfortunately, it does not list the names of the members of the Junior, Sophomore or Freshmen classes (only officers listed for those classes).

I extracted all of the names (& some other information) from the yearbook & have put them on my genealogy web site (total of 13 web pages, containing over 1,900 records; sorted alphabetically by surname).

The link to the first page of these extracts on my web site is:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/family/r...

Or it can be accessed through the "General Research" link on the main page at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...

Please note that I put all kinds of genealogy information on my web site, not just data about the families I am researching. I hope the information I've put online helps someone with their research . . .

Susan :)
Sassytazzy's Online Genealogy Research Library
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...

Rebecca Carrier: I have an Olive Carrier 1821-1856 d/o Zenon Carriere 1797-1824 , & Marie(Mary) Stouts 1798-1860. Olive married Jean Baptiste LeBleau, who is the father of Celestine LeBleau marreid to Ursin Miller, parents of Olive Miller who married my GreatGrandfather Adam LeJeune. She would be my GGGgrandmother on my father's side. I have been looking for the parents of Celestine LeBleau for years and just recently found her in 1900 census with Mary Stouts as head of house. Zenon Carriere is the only other Carriere I've been able to find.

Pennsylvania Carriers in Tennessee

According to a local History, " Watauga, An Unusual History of the Watauga Tennessee Area" by Howard N. Campbell pub 1986. In 1889 two Carrier brothers Charles F. b. Jul 1862 and Thomas H. b. Jan 1869 moved to Tennessee from Pennsylvania , and started a logging and sawmill operation on the Watauga River, in the Watauga community of Carter county adjacent to Sullivan County. The Company originally The Watauga Boom and Lumber Company, included local business men, but was taken over by the Carrier, Mossein Company a Pennsylvania Company. The accounts of the operation indicate a booming operation (pun intended) until a big flood washed the boom away and thousands of logs. The 1900 Carter County census list Charles F. wife as Margaret D. and a 9 year old son Fred all born in Pennsylvania. Thomas H.'s wife is named Sarah b. Aug 1869 in PA. their daughter Blanche B. b. July 1896 in TN. Thomas H. mother in law Emma Clark b. Sep 1849. was living with them . A society page note included in the history indicate the Carriers had a relative Dr. John Shirley visit them from Clarion Pennsylvania. Does anyone know which line of Carriers these Carriers are from I can't find any connection between them and the Sullivan County Carriers from the Shenandoah Virginia line.

I am compiling a booklet about former rural and early school teachers once of Elk and nearby counties. I'm searching for information, and possible copies of pictures of teachers, their pupils and the school houses where they taught. I have the name Earl Carrier as once being a teacher in Hallton, a rural area in Elk County. Also the name, Clarence Carrier, a teacher in 1900 at the very rural area then known as Raine or Rainetown which was the location deep within the woods of Elk County where a tiny village was established around a location where timber was being cut and transported out of the area. Rainetown was in the area of what is now known as Lake City. All information will be greatly appreciated.

I recently bought some old photos from a dealer. A group of family photos had some writing on the back of them.

The first two attachments are of Marine Private Spencer A. Carrier snapshots sent to his nephew Donald Smith. Spencer was on San Pedro Island, Santo Domingo circa 1916.

The last attachment is of Ora Smith. I think she lived in Wisconsin circa 1900 because most of the photos like hers were from there. The photographs were taken in
Fond du Lac, WI
Wanpun, WI
Stevensport, WI
WW2 soldier's photo from Brandon, WI
Grand Rapids, MI
Des Moines, IA
A photo of a distingushed man taken in Washington DC

Please E-MAIL me if this is your lineage.

Bill Bronsch
Bronsch@integrity.com

Uriah W. Carrier; Connecticut 1882

EVENING POST ANNUAL, 1882
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES
of the State Officers, Representatives in Congress, Governor’s Staff, and Senators and Members of the General Assembly of the State of Connecticut.
Published Annually.
Hartford, Conn.: Evening Post Association. 1882.
Pg. 126

URIAH W. CARRIER, Representative for Colchester, New London County:

First representative of Colchester, is a self-made man who has come to the front through the exercise of persistent and well-directed energy. He is a native of that town, and has but just reached his fifty-seventh birthday. His boyhood was passed upon a farm, but at the age of twenty years he set forth to begin anew, and, finding his way to Rockville, obtained employment with Hunt, McLean & Co., with whom he remained three years. He then became junior partner of the new firm of Hunt, Stickney & Carrier, which subsequently did an extensive business in general merchandise. In the spring of 1858 Mr. Carrier opened a large dry-goods store in Hartford, but at the end of two years sold it and returned to Rockville. There he resumed business, and during the next fourteen years enjoyed a lucrative trade. In 1874 he disposed of his store in Rockville and removed to Colchester, where he has since lived and has conducted the business of a country merchant with marked success. He had only ordinary educational advantages in his youth, and but few helps over the hard places that poor and struggling young men encounter. Mr. Carrier is a life-long Democrat. He has held various local offices.
