Re: Parthena Carrol

Parthena and Wiley Jennings are my great-great grandparents. I have found a lot of information on this site about them, but I would love to have more. I know Wiley is buried at East Okland Cemetery in Mountain Home, Arkansas, but I don't know where she is buried. She died suddenly on the way to their son's house "Jim" (James, I guess). My grandpa told us the story and he called him "Jim" but the closest name on the list of children is James. Anyway, Wiley and Parthena were going to his house because Jim and his wife had just had a baby. Jim came running out of the house in tears because the baby had died. Parthena fell off the wagon from a heart attack. Based on the information I have, this was around 1890, because my great grandfather, Richard Thomas Jennings, was supposedly nine years old and he was born in 1881. Anyway, Wiley Demit remarried Ida Lee Biggers and they had two children. They are bured side-by-side at Mountain Home, Arkansas, even though she lived about 40 years after his death. My grandpa Jennings called Wiley Jennings by his middle name of "Demit"; however, the spelling we were always given was "Demmit." Another thing is that Wiley Demit was a minister. He supposedly died while breaking in a new pair of mules. The mules ran under the shed and broke his back. He was 82 years old. Let me know if you receive this email and if you have any information you would like to share. I'll be glad to share with you what I have.

Lisa Jennings Ward
Holdenville, Oklahoma

I met a man with "Seven Wives"!

Has anybody heard the story of Benjamin Carrol, of Olney, Buckinghamshire, England. A publican there had a News Years custom of offering charitable dinners to the old men of the town. According to the local paper,"Croydon's Weekly Standard" on Jan 4 1862, one of the old men benefiting from his largesse was a BENJAMIN CARROL, aged 76, and the article refered to him, intriguingly, as "being the son of the seventh wife of his father". Benjamin was born in Olney but I don't know specifically who his father was.

However, there are seven parish record entries for marriages of "John Carrol"(the surname being spelled with some variation) in the eighteenth century. They were as follows; 1735-Elizabeth Swain, bur 1737; 1738-Mary Abraham, bur ?; 1743-Mary Martimore, bur 1750; 1751-Sarah Fisher, bur 1751 or 1761; 1761-Martha Standish, bur ?; 1783-Anna Maria Wheatley, bur 1785. There is also a burial for a John Carrol in 1787.

Could all these marriage have been contracted by the same John Carrol? There are in fact four baptismal entries which could tie up with these marriages, all "John son of John" - viz, in 1699, 1713, 1717, 1736 - and just one burial of a "John son of John" - in 1715.

If anybody has any information, or any thoughts about this "lurv-machine" I'd love to hear from them!

(I'm going to post this on the CARROLL page too)
I have more on the Mathews side but I was hoping for someone that may be a descendant of Roy or have some info of where/when he died along with any of his descendants.

Thanks

Jeff

Re: Marriage: James MARTIN & Mary CARROL, FEB 12, 1855, Iowa

Carol,

First - Thank you, Thank you!
James Martin and Mary Carrol; had 3 children.
Their son James A. Martin was born in Illinois Camp Liberty, Adams Point, I believe - what ever the U.S. Army base was).
He died in 1877 - or earlier. At the time of his death, he was in Cheyenne, Wyoming, either working for the railroad or in the Army. I don't know wherre he is buried, but I do know Mary's family lived in Muscatine at the time and they arranged for the memorial.
In the census, James Martin says he was born in Ireland. In his Civil War records, he says he was born in New York. Mary Carrol remarried after James' death to a man named Keegan. They had one daughter. She later divorced him (oh, the shame of it). My grandfather and his siblings remembered her quite clearly. I have what is supposed to be a picture of her.
James A. Martin was my grandfather's (James Patrick Martin) father. James A. married Maggie (Margaret) Carey - they had oodles of children. From that point on, I have lots of information.
What would you like?
Send me an email at juliemartin@dslextreme.com

Julie Martin

James:

You can order the full military record of Peter J. Carrol from the Canadian Archives. I did just that with my grandfather's record. I believe it cost about $25 at the time (a couple of years ago). But whatever it cost, it was worth it. The information in the record was very interesting, explained where he was throughout his service, and included a full medical record as well.

Here's the web address link:
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/02/0201060101_e.html

Regards,
Susan

Marriage: James MARTIN & Mary CARROL, FEB 12, 1855, Iowa

I'm trying to locate siblings and the parents for my great grandmother, Catharine Burke (nee Martin) and her brother, Francis "Frank" Martin in Iowa circa 1840's to 1859---and maybe earlier than 1840.

Catharine Martin married Michael John Burk~e at St. Raphael's Catholic Cathedral, Dubuque, Dubuque, IA on SEP 16, 1850. In the 1850 census, this family is living in Butler Township, Jackson county, Iowa. Catharine's husband, Michael John Burke was a Government Land Surveyor in Iowa, Minnesota, & Kansas. He was also a school teacher and a farmer. Michael John was born JAN 1, 1812, Kilcolgan, County Galway, Ireland and emmigrated to Iowa in 1848.

Frank Martin was born circa 1824 & Catharine was born circa 1826, (possibly) County Antrim, Ireland. I haven't yet validated where in Ireland they were
born. They are both buried at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Olathe, Johnson county, Kansas.

Does anyone have information to share about the following couple? The early MARTIN line in Iowa is difficult to search because the surname could be French, German, or Irish. My MARTIN line is Irish.

I appreciate any feedback as the MARTIN line in Iowa and Ireland is my brick wall". Thank you.

Carol
No. California
cveio@sbcglobal.net

Husband First Name: JAMES
Husband Last Name: MARTIN
Wife First Name: MARY
Wife Last Name: CARROL
Married:
Date: 02/12/1855
County: Muscatine
State: IA

He never signed anything with the same dates, let alone put down where he was born in Ireland. His paper work says he was from Queenstown. Richard came to the US in 1835 and filed for naturalization in Coshocton County, Ohio, October 1844. I don't think they married until about 1855 because their first of seven children was born 1856 in Dakota County, Minnesota. I wonder if they met in Coshocton?

I apologize for not writing sooner, but I have been taking care of a friend of mine with Alzeihmers. He passed away this week, and I am finally able to respond to your reply. I would be glad to share any information with you. I would like to know as much as I can about the Carrols.

Sincerely,

Justin Sumner
